I have what seems to be a really odd issue with a react function component.
For brevity my code look like:

The <TableComponent /> always works as expected and the event handler is always called with the correct entity passed.
What is not happening is that the editing component only opens the first time the component is mounted (case 1). At this stage the editing component opens with the correct info, and continues to do so whichever row is clicked.
After this, if I navigate away from this component (React Router 6.4.2) and then come back to it (case 2). The entities still load, but the handleSelect function fails to update the state and nothing happens when a row is clicked (it is called however).
The useAjax hook is to support azure msal and has been working perfectly since written and the network trace doesn't show any issue accessing the API.
React is version 18.2.0 if that is relevant.
The useEffect function is called in all cases and the entities are set correctly.
The console.log in the handleSelect always shows the correct entity as selected in the table.
The second console.log ('hello world!') gets called when the page loads (in both cases) then only in the first case when a row is selected.
Using React Dev Tools it shows that the state is simply not updated in the second case.
What is really confusing me is why there is any difference between case 1 and case 2, as it doesn't matter if I navigate to a page where the component tree is doesn't include the above and I assume m references to the component are dropped. I suspect this is a misunderstanding that I have about how React and/or React Router are working.
Trying to Google the issue mainly seems to return issues about the state not updating immediately after it is set - which I am pretty sure is not the case.

I think you are making the mistake of copying data from react-query into local state. The idea is that react-query is the state manager, so the data returned by react-query is really all you need.
What you are experiencing in the codesandbox is probably just refetchOnWindowFocus. So you focus the window and click the button, react-query will do a background update and overwrite your local state. This is a direct result of the "copy" I just mentioned.
What you want to do is really just store the user selection, and calculate everything else on the fly, something like this:

you can then display whatever you have in persons, which will always be up-to-date, even if a background update yields more persons. If the computation (the filtering) is expensive, you can also use useMemo to memoize it (compute it only when personData or femalesOnly changes - but this is likely a premature optimization.
I'm not totally familiar with react-query however the problem is likely that it is re-fetching (async!) everytime the component updates. Since setPersons() triggers an update (ie. sets state) it'll update the new persons state to be the filtered female list and then trigger a fetch of all persons again which comes back and sets the persons state back to the full list (ie. see what happens when you click the female filter button and then just leave it).
There is a more idiomatic way to achieve this in React which is to keep a "single source of truth" (ie. all the persons) and dynamically filter that based on some local ui state.
For example see below where data becomes the source of truth, and persons is a computed value out of that source of truth. This has the benefit that if your original data changes you don't have to manually (read: imperatively) update it to also be females only. This is the "unidirectional data flow" and "reactivity" people always talk about and, honestly, it's what makes React, React.

This is ofc assuming you are always just loading from a json file. In a real application setting, given a backend you control, I would always recommend implementing filtering, sorting and pagination on the server side otherwise you are forced to over-fetch on the client.

It seems that you have latest build of React#16.13.x. You can find more details about it here. It is specified that you should not setState of another component from other component.
from the docs:
It is supported to call setState during render, but only for the same component. If you call setState during a render on a different component, you will now see a warning:
Warning: Cannot update a component from inside the function body of a different component.
This warning will help you find application bugs caused by unintentional state changes. In the rare case that you intentionally want to change the state of another component as a result of rendering, you can wrap the setState call into useEffect.
Coming to the actual question.
I think there is no need of getDerivedStateFromProps in the child component body. If you want to trigger the bound event. Then you can call it via the onClick of the Child component as i can see it is a <button/>.

I got the following for a react native project while calling navigation between screens.
Warning: Cannot update a component from inside the function body of a different component.
I thought it was because I was using TouchableOpacity. This is not an issue of using Pressable, Button, or TouchableOpacity. When I got the error message my code for calling the ChatRoom screen from the home screen was the following:

The resulting behavior was that the code gave out that warning and I couldn't go back to the previous HomeScreen and reuse the button to navigate to the ChatRoom. The solution to that was doing the onPress in an inline anonymous function.

so now as expected behavior, I can go from Home to ChatRoom and back again with a reusable button.

If you want to invoke some function passed as props automatically from child component then best place is componentDidMount lifecycle methods in case of class components or useEffect hooks in case of functional components as at this point component is fully created and also mounted.
I was running into this problem writing a filter component with a few text boxes that allows the user to limit the items in a list within another component. I was tracking my filtered items in Redux state. This solution is essentially that of #Rajnikant; with some sample code.

Based on the stack trace, the offending line was my props.setFilteredItems invocation within the render function. So I simply enclosed the filter invocations and state change in a useEffect as below.

When I first added the useEffect I blew the top off the stack since every invocation of useEffect caused state change. I had to add an array of skipping effects so that the effect only ran when the filter fields themselves changed.
I suggest looking at video below. As the warning in the OP's question suggests, there's a change detection issue with the parent (Parent) attempting to update one child's (Child 2) attribute prematurely as the result of another sibling child's (Child 1) callback to the parent. For me, Child 2 was prematurely/incorrectly calling the passed in Parent callback thus throwing the warning.
Note, this commuincation workflow is only an option. I personally prefer exchange and update of data between components via a shared Redux store. However, sometimes it's overkill. The video suggests a clean alternative where the children are 'dumb' and only converse via props mand callbacks.
Also note, If the callback is invoked on an Child 1 'event' like a button click it'll work since, by then, the children have been updated. No need for timeouts, useEffects, etc. UseState will suffice for this narrow scenario.

In react native, if you change the state yourself in the code using a hot-reload I found out I get this error, but using a button to change the state made the error go away.
However wrapping my useEffect content in a :
setTimeout(() => {

Worked even for hot-reloading but I don't want a stupid setTimeout for no reason so I removed it and found out changing it via code works just fine!
I was updating state in multiple child components simultaneously which was causing unexpected behavior. replacing useState with useRef hook worked for me.
Try to use setTimeout,when I call props.showNotification without setTimeout, this error appear, maybe everything run inTime in life circle, UI cannot update.

I'm having an issue with displaying an array of Pokemon moves that I've retrieved from the database (using a rails/react/redux). The strange thing is that when I display the entire array without trying to use join on it, everything's fine. But when I try to use join on it, I get this error message: Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property 'join' of undefined. And when I display the entire array variable as is, without modifying anything, it does display.
I've gone through my code and I've confirmed that the routing is fine and the right action creators are being dispatched. I've also gone through my reducers and I can confirm that they are using the right action constants to make decisions as to what the new state object is. The only thing that I can think of is that maybe the problem lies in one of these places below:

It's the strangest thing...when I do { JSON.stringify(pokemon.moves) } I can literally see that it is an array of strings (of Pokemon moves). And even when I just display it like this, { pokemon.moves }, it seems to be correctly grabbing the right Pokemon; the name, type, attack, and defense text is all there and the moves is also displayed (although not correctly formatted).
NOTE: Upon observing my log (it shows me the action creators that are dispatched when I interact with the page), the error with join seems to pop up before (or instead?) of the action creator that should have been dispatched (i.e. I see that the START_LOADING_SINGLE_POKEMON action is never dispatched before this error pops up)
for the first render of your app , no actions have been dispatched.
componentDidMount occurs after initial render.
hence, unless the parent component of "PokemonDetail" is passing an intial pokemon object with key "moves " whose value is of type array, it would casue this error for first render.
you can either have conditional rendering inside "PokemonDetail" component based on "Pokemon" object or have inital state of "pokemon" contain moves array in reducers.

This seems to have a major flaw (imo), updating any of the todos will show the loading state for every single todo, not just the one that has the pending mutation.
And this seems to stem from a larger problem: there's no way to track the state of multiple calls to the same mutation. So even if I did want to only show the loading state for the todos that were actually loading, there's no way to do that since we only have the concept of "is loading" not "is loading for todo X".
Besides manually tracking loading state outside of Apollo, the only decent solution I can see is splitting out a separate component, use that to render each Todo instead of having that code directly in the Todos component, and having those components each initialize their own mutation. I'm not sure if I think that's a good or bad design, but in either case it doesn't feel like I should have to change the structure of my components to accomplish this.
And this also extends to error handling. What if I update one todo, and then update another while the first update is in progress. If the first call errors, will that be visible at all in the data returned from useMutation? What about the second call?
Is there a native Apollo way to fix this? And if not, are there options for handling this that may be better than the ones I've mentioned?

Admittedly, the example in the docs should be rewritten to be much clearer. There's a number of other issues with it too.
The useQuery and useMutation hooks are only designed for tracking the loading, error and result state of a single operation at a time. The operation's variables might change, it might be refetched or appended onto using fetchMore, but ultimately, you're still just dealing with that one operation. You can't use a single hook to keep track of separate states of multiple operations. To do that, you need multiple hooks.
In the case of a form like this, if the input fields are known ahead of time, then you can just split the hook out into multiple ones within the same component:

There are few different things that are wrong there.
Syntax error is because your <key> tag is not properly closed here:

And... there is no <key> element for React Native. You can check at docs Components section what components are supported. Btw there is no such an element for React also.
Requesting data is async. So when you send request in render() this method finishes execution much earlier before data is returned. You just cannot do that way. What can you do instead? You should request data(in this element or its parent or Redux reducer - it does not matter) and after getting results you need to set state with .setState(if it happens inside the component) or .dispatch(if you are using Redux). This will call render() and component will be updated with data retrieved. There is additional question about displaying spinner or using other approach to let user know data is still loading. But it's orthogonal question. Just to let you know.
Even if requesting data was sync somehow(for example reading data from LocalStorage) you must not ever do this in render().This method is called much more frequently that you can expect so making anything heavy here will lead to significant performance degradation.
