Contacts not displaying on clicking Add button (React App) - javascript

After adding key={ contact.id} to ContactList component, contacts (name, email, and trash icon) are not visible on clicking Add button. Id (generated by uuid) is passed from ContactCard to ContactList and then to App.js. I am new to react and its concepts. There may be a tiny mistake but I am not able to figure it out.
Here's how it should be...
Here's how it is...
These components are going to be checked,
App.js
function App() {
const LOCAL_STORAGE_KEY = "contacts";
const [contacts, setContacts] = useState([]);
const addContactHandler = (contact) => {
setContacts([...contacts, {id: uuid(), ...contact }]);
};
const removeContactHandler = (id) => {
const newContactList = contacts.filter((contact) => {
return contact.id !== id;
}); setContacts(newContactList);}
useEffect(() => {
const retreiveContacts = JSON.parse(localStorage.getItem(LOCAL_STORAGE_KEY));
if(retreiveContacts) setContacts(retreiveContacts);
}, []);
useEffect(() => {
localStorage.setItem(LOCAL_STORAGE_KEY, JSON.stringify(contacts));
}, [contacts]);
return (
<div className="ui container">
<Header />
<AddContact addContactHandler = {addContactHandler}/>
<ContactList contacts = {contacts} getContactId = {removeContactHandler}/>
</div> );}
ContactList.js
import React from "react";
import ContactCard from "./ContactCard";
const ContactList = (props) => {
const deleteContactHandler = (id) => {
props.getContactId(id);
};
const renderContactList = props.contacts.map((contact) => {
return <ContactCard
contact = {contact}
clickHandler = {deleteContactHandler}
key={ contact.id}/>
});
return (
<div className="ui celled list"> {renderContactList} </div>
);};
ContactCard.js
const ContactCard = (props) => {
const {id, name, email} = props.contact;
return (
<div className="item ">
<img className="ui avatar image" src={user} alt="user" />
<div className="content">
<div className="header">{name}</div>
<div>{email}</div>
</div>
<i className="trash alternate outline icon"
style={{color: "red", marginTop: "10px "}}
onClick={() => props.clickHandler(id)}></i>
</div>
);};

(Updated)
The problem was the import {uuid} from 'uuidv4';. The right way to import this is doing:
import React, {useState, useEffect} from 'react';
import './App.css';
import Header from './Header';
import AddContact from './AddContact';
import ContactList from './ContactList';
import { v4 as uuidv4 } from 'uuid';
And the setContacts in App.js needs to be like this:
setContacts([...contacts, {id: uuidv4(), ...contact }]);
I tried here and it works!
Extra tip:
I noticed that you AddContact component could be changed to be a better class component. See some changes that you could do:
constructor(props) {
super(props);
this.state = {
name: "",
email: ""
};
this.add = this.add.bind(this);
}
add = (e) => {
e.preventDefault();
if(this.state.name === "" || this.state.email === ""){
alert("All fields are mandatory");
return;
}
this.props.addContactHandler(this.state);
//clearing name and email
this.setState({name: "", email: ""});
};
Using constructor is a better way to use props in your class component, and bind your functions to use "this.add" for example.

My context is as follows:
import React, {createContext, useEffect, useState} from "react";
export const CartContext = createContext();
const CartContextProvider = (props) => {
const [cart, setCart] = useState(JSON.parse(localStorage.getItem('cart')) || []);
useEffect(() => {
localStorage.setItem('cart', JSON.stringify(cart));
}, [cart]);
const updateCart = (productId, op) => {
let updatedCart = [...cart];
if (updatedCart.find(item => item.id === productId)) {
let objIndex = updatedCart.findIndex((item => item.id === productId));
if (op === '-' && updatedCart[objIndex].qty > 1) {
updatedCart[objIndex].qty -= 1;
} else if (op === '+') {
updatedCart[objIndex].qty += 1;
}
} else {
updatedCart.push({id: productId, qty: 1})
}
setCart(updatedCart);
}
const removeItem = (id) => {
setCart(cart.filter(item => item.id !== id));
};
return (
<CartContext.Provider value={{cart, updateCart, removeItem}}>
{props.children}
</CartContext.Provider>
)
};
export default CartContextProvider;
App.js:
import React from "react";
import { BrowserRouter as Router, Route, Routes } from "react-router-dom";
import NavigationBar from "./components/layout/navigationBar/NavigationBar";
import Homepage from "./pages/homepage/Homepage";
import AboutUsPage from "./pages/aboutUs/AboutUsPage";
import ContactPage from "./pages/contact/ContactPage";
import SearchPage from "./pages/search/SearchPage";
import ShoppingCart from "./components/layout/shoppingCart/ShoppingCart";
import CartContextProvider from "./context/CartContext";
function App() {
return (
<div>
<CartContextProvider>
<Router>
<NavigationBar/>
<ShoppingCart/>
<Routes>
<Route exact path="/" element={<Homepage/>}/>
<Route path="/a-propos" element={<AboutUsPage/>} />
<Route path="/contact" element={<ContactPage/>}/>
<Route path="/recherche" element={<SearchPage/>}/>
</Routes>
</Router>
</CartContextProvider>
</div>
);
}
export default App;
In the component ShoppingCart I am using another component ShoppingCartQuantity which in turn makes use of the context. It works as it should.
Here's the ShoppingCartQuantity component:
import React, {useContext} from "react";
import {CartContext} from "../../../context/CartContext";
import styles from './ShoppingCartQuantity.module.css'
const ShoppingCartQuantity = ({productId}) => {
const {cart, updateCart} = useContext(CartContext);
let qty = 0;
if (cart.find((item => item.id === productId))) {
let objIndex = cart.findIndex((item => item.id === productId));
qty = cart[objIndex].qty;
}
return (
<div>
<span>
<span className={`${styles.op} ${styles.decrementBtn}`} onClick={() => updateCart(productId, '-')}>-</span>
<span className={styles.qty}>{qty}</span>
<span className={`${styles.op} ${styles.incrementBtn}`} onClick={() => updateCart(productId, '+')}>+</span>
</span>
</div>
)
}
export default ShoppingCartQuantity;
Now I am trying to use the ShoppingCartQuantity component in the Homepage component which is a route element (refer to App.js) but getting the error Uncaught TypeError: Cannot destructure property 'cart' of '(0 , react__WEBPACK_IMPORTED_MODULE_0__.useContext)(...)' as it is undefined.
So the context is working for components outside the router but not for those inside it. If I have wrapped the router within the provider, shouldn't all the route elements get access to the context or am I missing something?
UPDATE
As user Build Though suggested in the comments, I tried using the ShoppingCartQuantity component in another route element and it works fine; so the problem is not with the router!
Below is the code of how I am using the ShoppingCartQuantity component in the Homepage component:

export default Homepage;
I am using the component in a SweetAlert popup. I guess it's the SweetAlert component that is not getting access to the context. Does anyone have an idea how to pass the context to the SweetAlert component?
UPDATE 2
The accepted solution works great except for 1 small issue: the ShoppingCartQuantity component was not re-rendering inside the SweetAlert popup and the qty would not change visually.
I updated the component by using the qty as a state.
const ShoppingCartQuantity = ({ qty, productId, updateCart }) => {
const [quantity, setQuantity] = useState(qty);
const updateCartHandler = (productId, amount) => {
updateCart(productId, amount);
setQuantity(Math.max(quantity + amount, 1));
}
return (
<div>
<span>
<span
className={`${styles.op} ${styles.decrementBtn}`}
onClick={() => updateCartHandler(productId, -1)}
>
-
</span>
<span className={styles.qty}>{quantity}</span>
<span
className={`${styles.op} ${styles.incrementBtn}`}
onClick={() => updateCartHandler(productId, 1)}
>
+
</span>
</span>
</div>
)
}
Issue
It's very likely that the sweet alert component is rendered outside your app, and thus, outside the CartContextProvider provider. I just searched the repo docs if there is a way to specify a root element, but this doesn't seem possible since this sweet alert code isn't React specific.
See this other similar issue regarding accessing a Redux context in the alert.
Solution
It doesn't seem possible ATM to access the context value from within the modal, so IMHO a workaround could be to refactor your ShoppingCartQuantity component into a wrapper container component to access the context and a presentation component to receive the context values and any callbacks.
I suggest also just passing the amount you want to increment/decrement the quantity by to updateCart instead of passing a "+"/"-" string and operator comparison.
Example:
export const withShoppingCartContext = Component => props => {
const { cart, removeItem, updateCart } = useContext(CartContext);
return <Component {...props} {...{ cart, removeItem, updateCart }} />;
}
const ShoppingCartQuantity = ({ cart, productId, updateCart }) => {
const qty = cart.find(item => item.id === productId)?.qty ?? 0;
return (
<div>
<span>
<span
className={`${styles.op} ${styles.decrementBtn}`}
onClick={() => updateCart(productId, -1)}
>
-
</span>
<span className={styles.qty}>{qty}</span>
<span
className={`${styles.op} ${styles.incrementBtn}`}
onClick={() => updateCart(productId, 1)}
>
+
</span>
</span>
</div>
)
}
export default ShoppingCartQuantity;
In places in your app where ShoppingCartQuantity component is used within the CartContextProvider decorate it with the withShoppingCartContext HOC and use normally.
ShoppingCart
import ShoppingCartQuantityBase, {
withShoppingCartContext
} from "../../components/layout/shoppingCart/ShoppingCartQuantity";
const ShoppingCartQuantity = withShoppingCartContext(ShoppingCartQuantityBase);
const ShoppingCart = (props) => {
...
return (
...
<ShoppingCartQuantity productId={....} />
...
);
};
In places where ShoppingCartQuantity component is used outside the context, like in the sweet modal, access the context within the React code and pass in the context values and callbacks.
...
import ShoppingCartQuantity from "../../components/layout/shoppingCart/ShoppingCartQuantity";
...
function Homepage() {
...
const { cart, updateCart } = useContext(CartContext);
const productModal = withReactContent(Swal);
...
function showProductPopupHandler(productId) {
ProductService.get(productId)
.then((response) => {
const product = response.data;
return productModal.fire({
html:
<div>
...
<div>
<FavoriteBtn productId={product.AMP_GUID}/>
<ShoppingCartQuantity
productId={product.AMP_GUID}
{...{ cart, updateCart }}
/>
</div>
...
</div>,
showConfirmButton: false,
showCloseButton: true
});
});
}
return (...);
}
export default Homepage;
Additional Issues
Your context provider is mutating state when updating quantities. When updating nested state you should still create a shallow copy of the array elements that are being updated.
Example:
const CartContextProvider = (props) => {
...
const updateCart = (productId, amount) => {
// only update if item in cart
if (cart.some(item => item.id === productId)) {
// use functional state update to update from previous state
// cart.map creates shallow copy of previous state
setCart(cart => cart.map(item => item.id === productId
? {
...item, // copy item being updated into new object reference
qty: Math.max(item.qty + amount, 1), // minimum quantity is 1
}
: item
));
}
}
const removeItem = (id) => {
setCart(cart => cart.filter(item => item.id !== id));
};
return (
<CartContext.Provider value={{ cart, updateCart, removeItem }}>
{props.children}
</CartContext.Provider>
);
};
You did't show where you are using the ShoppingCart component or the ShoppingCartQuantity component.
Anyway, when you declare a route, you must pass the component, not the root element. So, this line:
<Route exact path="/" element={<Homepage/>}/>
must be
<Route exact path="/" component={Homepage}/>

React js useState&useEffect array duplicates elements after a change

I am a beginner in react js programming. I'm trying to do the todo project, which is a classic project. When I delete or add an element from the list, the newly formed list appears on the screen by combining with the previous one, I will show it with a picture below. I did not understand the source of the eror so wanted to post it here to get some advices suggestions about why it is happening.Thank you.(I am getting and storing data in firebase firestore database)
Before Adding an element initial array state
After adding an element to the array.
I am using useState for array and using useEffect to get initial data
MainPage.js that contains form and the list components.
const MainPage = () => {
const [isLoading, setLoding] = useState(true);
const [array, setArray] = useState([]);
const sub = async (email) => {
var result = [];
await onSnapshot(doc(db, "users", email), (doc) => {
var data = doc.data().todos;
data.forEach((element) => {
Object.keys(element).map(() => {
result.push(element["title"]);
});
});
setArray(result);
setLoding(false);
});
};
useEffect(() => {
sub(auth.currentUser.email);
}, []);
const onAddToDo = (todoTitle) => {
setArray((prevAray) => {
return [...prevAray, todoTitle];
});
};
const onRemove = (title) => {
setArray((prevAray) => {
return [array.pop(array.indexOf(title))];
});
};
return (
<div>
{isLoading && <h1>Loading</h1>}
{!isLoading && (
<div>
<section>
<NavBar></NavBar>
<ToDoForm passData={onAddToDo} />
</section>
<section>
<CardList removeCards={onRemove} array={array} />
</section>
</div>
)}
</div>
);
};
export default MainPage;
Firebase.js that stores the firebase update methods
export const deleteItem = (title) => {
updateDoc(doc(db, "users", auth.currentUser.email), {
todos: arrayRemove({ title: title }),
});
};
export const addnewTodo = (title) => {
updateDoc(doc(db, "users", auth.currentUser.email), {
todos: arrayUnion({ title: title }),
});
};
TodoForm.js component
const ToDoForm = (props) => {
const [todoTitle, setTitle] = useState("");
const titleChangeHandler = (event) => {
setTitle(event.target.value);
};
const newTodoAdder = (event) => {
event.preventDefault();
addnewTodo(todoTitle);
props.passData(todoTitle);
};
return (
<div className="form_holder">
<div className="form_container">
<form onSubmit={newTodoAdder}>
<h3>Add Events</h3>
<label>Title</label>
<input
onChange={titleChangeHandler}
type="text"
placeholder="Title"
id="title"
></input>
<div className="holder">
<button type="sumbit">Add</button>
</div>
</form>
</div>
</div>
);
};
export default ToDoForm;
CardList.js component
const CardList = (props) => {
const array = props.array;
if (array.length === 0) {
return (
<div className="grid_container">
<h2>Found no todos</h2>
</div>
);
}
return (
<div className="grid_container">
{array.map((element, index) => {
return (
<Card
removeSelf={() => {
props.removeCards(element);
}}
key={index}
title={element}
/>
);
})}
</div>
);
};
export default CardList;
Card.js component
const Card = (props) => {
const handleRemove = (event) => {
event.preventDefault();
deleteItem(props.title);
props.removeSelf();
};
return (
<div className="card">
<h2 className="card__title">{props.title}</h2>
<button type="button" onClick={handleRemove}>
Delete
</button>
</div>
);
};
export default Card;
EDIT ;
Index.js file
import React from "react";
import ReactDOM from "react-dom/client";
import App from "./App";
import { BrowserRouter } from "react-router-dom";
const root = ReactDOM.createRoot(document.getElementById("root"));
root.render(
<BrowserRouter>
<App />
</BrowserRouter>
);
SOLUTION
I fixed the issue by changing the add and remove functions that were inside of MainPage.js file You can see the new versions bellow. Hope someday it will help somebody.
Use effect was called once all I had to do get the data again after a change...
New Remove and Add functions
const onAddToDo = (todoTitle) => {
console.log(todoTitle + " Added");
sub(auth.currentUser.email);
};
const onRemove = (title) => {
console.log(title + " Deleted");
sub(auth.currentUser.email);
};

How can I render a list by clicking a button in React?

I am working on a todo list using React and Firebase. I want to be able to click a button which will add a new todo, but render the todo as a list item. So far, I am mapping through the list with each todo, but when I add in the props, I am getting the error message Missing "key" prop for element in iterator, when I hover over the error in VSC. How can I add in a key prop, when using a button click to render a list? I included the code if it helps.
AddLink.js
import { useState, useEffect } from "react";

import { RiDeleteBin6Line } from "react-icons/ri";
import Modal from "../Modal/Modal";
import Backdrop from "../Backdrop/Backdrop";
import firebase from "firebase/app";
import initFirebase from "../../config";
import "firebase/firestore";
// import Links from "../Links/Links";
import Todo from "../Todo/Todo";
initFirebase();
const db = firebase.firestore();
function AddLink(props) {
const [modalIsOpen, setModalIsOpen] = useState(false);
const [todos, setTodos] = useState([]);
const [input, setInput] = useState("");

</div>
</div>
</div>
{todos.map((todo) => (

))}
{modalIsOpen && (
<Modal onCancel={closeModalHandler} onConfirm={closeModalHandler} />
)}
{modalIsOpen && <Backdrop onCancel={closeModalHandler} />}
</form>
</div>
);
}
export default AddLink;
And then Todo.js
import React from "react";
function Todo(props) {
return (
<div>
<li>{props.text}</li>
</div>
);
}
export default Todo;
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
There is an index as 2nd param of Array.map callback function
You could use it as a key to your rendering, it's safe if you d don't do any re-ordering of your list.
{
todos.map((todo, index) => (
<Todo key={index} todo={todo} />
));
}
If you want to have an actual key of your list, try out uuid lib, and generate a key as your adding a new todo item.
Something like this:
import { v4 as uuidv4 } from 'uuid';
const addTodo = event => {
event.preventDefault();
console.log("clicked");
db.collection("links").add({
id: uuidv4(), //<-- Add random unique key to your todo item
todo: input,
timestamp: firebase.firestore.FieldValue.serverTimestamp()
});
setInput("");
};

Click anywhere to close dropdown React

Hi I am creating an app where the user can search for books by title. The user can search and each book result has a dropdown. so I have many dropdowns on a single page (the search results page). I am trying to make a dropdown close when the user clicks outside of the dropdown button (which is a div). Currently I can open the dropdown by clicking on the dropdown button and only close it when clicking on the dropdown button again.
I need the dropdown to close when clicking anywhere except the dropdown options. How would I go about doing this?
ButtonDropDown.js
import React, { useState } from 'react';
import PropTypes from 'prop-types';
import { BsFillCaretDownFill } from 'react-icons/bs';
const ButtonDropDown = ({ choices, label }) => {
const [active, setActive] = useState(false);
const toggleClass = () => {
setActive(!active);
};
return (
<div className="dropdown">
<button onClick={toggleClass} type="button" className="dropbtn">
<BsFillCaretDownFill />
</button>
<div
id="myDropdown"
className={`dropdown-content ${active ? `show` : `hide`}`}
>
<div>{label}</div>
{choices.map((choice) => (
<div>{choice}</div>
))}
</div>
</div>
);
};
ButtonDropDown.propTypes = {
choices: PropTypes.arrayOf(PropTypes.string).isRequired,
label: PropTypes.string,
};
ButtonDropDown.defaultProps = {
label: 'Move to...',
};
export default ButtonDropDown;
Book.js
import React from 'react';
import PropTypes from 'prop-types';
import ButtonDropDown from './ButtonDropDown';
const Book = ({ title, authors, thumbnail }) => {
return (
<div className="book">
<img src={thumbnail} alt={title} className="book-thumbnail" />
<div className="book-title">{title}</div>
<div className="book-authors">{authors}</div>
<ButtonDropDown
choices={['Currently Reading', 'Want to Read', 'Read', 'None']}
/>
</div>
);
};
// Move to..., currently reading, want to read, read, none
Book.propTypes = {
thumbnail: PropTypes.string.isRequired,
title: PropTypes.string.isRequired,
authors: PropTypes.arrayOf(PropTypes.string),
};
Book.defaultProps = {
authors: [],
};
export default Book;
SearchPage.js
import React, { useEffect, useState } from 'react';
import { BsArrowLeftShort } from 'react-icons/bs';
// import { debounce } from 'debounce';
import SearchBar from '../components/SearchBar';
import { search } from '../api/BooksAPI';
import Book from '../components/Book';
const SearchPage = () => {
const [query, setQuery] = useState('');
const [data, setData] = useState([]);
// const [isLoading, setIsLoading] = useState(true);

</div>
))
console.log(options);
return <div >{options}</div>
}
export default Sugg;
please help me who knows how it works
thanks a lot
In the parent you could modify your code:
onClick = company => {
console.log('company', company);
this.setState({ value: company.name});
};
and you don't need to bind this because onClick is an arrow function
<Sugg searchedList={this.state.searchedList} onClick={this.onClick} />
and in the child component, you need to use props from the parameters, not from the this context:
<p onClick={() =>props.onClick(company)}>{company.name}</p>
