I'm trying to program a check off calendar/task app.
Want I want to achieve is that, whenever I click on a box it should be checked off, show it's crossed off ( Day is crossed off ).
And then I want to store this is in my session.
What I'm thinking about doing is setting a boolean variable in the HTML to true and then send it with the session. So it can be remembered when I reload the page. But I still see the problem of letting the server-side know that this boolean has changed. Is this the way to achieve this? Is there some better way?
Controlling my server-side is Nodejs and I'm using the ejs templating. I'm using express-session to manage my session.
Thanks in advance!

I've been building a web app using Google's Firebase as a backend (for those who don't know, it's a Realtime database; any changes in data are reflected instantly and updated), there's other people working on the Android app with it so there's no other option (plus it's kinda cool). I was surprised that I have yet to write a single line of php or any server-side code. Anyway, jQuery is working perfectly fine for login and stuff.
Now I'm going to be making an admin page (with a separate login from the main users login). It'll be accessed in a completely separate way (by opening something like /admin.html). So the login can't be put on a separate page so people don't 'accidentally' access the admin panel by writing /admin.html in the address bar.
So I want to stop the admin page from completely loading until I've received confirmation from Firebase that the credentials are correct. So how can I achieve this knowing that both the login and the whole admin page needs to be in the same file. I'm positive this can be achieved with simple jQuery + Bootstrap but I'm not really sure how. Can anyone please point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance!
I have googled it of course but maybe my wording is off? :P
If I'm understanding your question correctly, your problem is that you need to create two separate views in a single file, and redirect to one or to another depending on your user "session", however, as all your code is in client, you don't have a "session" system operative.
Ok, there are several options you can take. I like the idea of using LocalStorage to store the user session.
When /admin.html is requested, your code checks for a valid session object (keep in mind that you'll need to define that session object) in the LocalStorage. If there is a valid object, you render the admin area, if there isn't any, you render the login area.
When someone sends username/pass to the database and you receive a valid response, you create a session object, store it in the LocalStorage and reload the page.
Keep in mind that you'll need to create a mechanism to make sessions die and a log off view.
For the dying sessions, as an idea, you can store the creation time and a expiration time in the session object. Each time a "session protected" page is served, when you check that the session object exist, you update it's expiration date a fixed amount (20 minutes plus current time, for example).
So, when you check if exists a valid session, you also check that it's expiration date has not due, and if it's, you delete the object.
I'm new to web development and I'm trying to make small projects to better understand how javascript works and how interactive websites are made. So I wanted to make a simple website that would save links that you would enter using input/form submission. but what are the ways which I can use to store it on the server so when I open the page next time the website retrieves the saved information and displays it?
I know this question is pretty open, but I'm really lost in this part of web development because I'm seeing too many completely different things on the internet like PHP, ASP.net and what not. Can someone help me out?
It would be very thankful if someone can send me a link to a related tutorial or some similar resource, as well.
If you to do that, you will need a server side program with a Database.
Here is a tutorial for PHP, a popular language to do web pages http://www.w3schools.com/php/
When you submit your data in the form, That data will be sent to the file mentioned in the action attribute of the form. Now, each input element of your form will have a name attribute which you can use to refer as a key in your GET or POST super global array depending on the method attribute of your form tag.
I know it may sound confusing without example. But, This is explained at many links on the web. Try searching for form submission with post.
Decide on which technologies that you want to work with. I prefer you to use ajax with instead of just using javascript.

Store the data in the client side is much simple I think. While storage in client, you can use localStorage sessionStorage and cookie.
localStorage you can storage whatever you want and it has no expiration time
sessionStorage the difference between localStorage is that it has a expiration time, A page session lasts for as long as the browser is open and survives over page reloads and restores
Cookie is much simple and can store limited value in string format
I'm not really sure where to begin.
I'd like to be able to update a users current page when another user either updates my database or sends a specific GET/POST request (I could write it either way).
I was thinking server sent events but I made a quick test using my php server and realized a couple things. First I would need an event loop based server because using php I'd have to create a loop to keep checking my database for a specific change. Second I realized this would be very server intensive so I should look into another method.
So to explicitly ask my questions...
Is it possible to update a users current page when someone else sends a GET request to a php file on my server? How?
If I need an event loop based server what is my best option? node.js?
Is this possible with sockets if not with SSE? SSE makes more sense because I'm not looking for any user feedback.
Thanks
Websockets and something like SignalR for ASP.Net could help you. Check out the options here
You can use Ajax too.

I wonder is there a way to send users an alert message in the middle of a session? for example when a transaction status changes from "process" to "succeed" I want the user to know it in the middle of their session.
I hope my question can be answered using jQuery AJAX. Many thanks.
You should look into using Comet for things like this. I assume you meant that you want to alert the user without them having performed some action? The atmosphere project has a javascript component that can be used client side to achieve this, but it will also require some support from your back-end.
I am trying to set a cookie so that users only get a javascript only once. However, I am a Rails newbie and have no idea where to begin. Can anyone point in me in the right direction?
If it's Javascript you're concerned about I would manage the cookie entirely in Javascript. After the message is shown the first time, set the cookie. It's relatively easy to work with cookies in native Javascript, but libraries like this make it a no-brainer: http://code.google.com/p/cookies/ . You could also use localStorage.
Or you're talking about the inclusion of an actual script only one time? You could do this via Rails with a session ( http://www.quarkruby.com/2007/10/21/sessions-and-cookies-in-ruby-on-rails ), or just make that script a function that gets called or ignored based on whether a cookie has been set.
