How can I access multiply nested sub objects in javascript? - javascript

I have a larger code which handles and sorts data. In it I want to work with objects to keep it easier and better structured. I have multiple categories and all of them have different nested subobjects, which I have trouble accessing writing/reading.
I searched on the web, w3schools but couldn't find my mistake, so sry for this entry level question!
I wrote a test function to better understand objects!

As to my understanding what this code does is:
-create an empty object data
-create an empty subobject report
-create an empty subsubobject time
-create an empty subsubsubobject name
-gives the subsubsubobject name a key/value pair date:value
(at least that was my intention to do)
First I tried to skip creating empty objects and directly fill data{} with:
data = {}
data[report][time][name][date] = value; but he seems to cannot set properties to this.
So I created like above coded first empty subobjects for all subcategories, is this really necessary or am I falling for a simple syntax mistake?
However he still doesn't log me the desired output which would be:
{ 'Income Statement': { Annually: { Revenue: {2017:10000000} } } }
and instead gives me:
{ 'Income Statement': { Annually: { Revenue: [Object] } } }
Simply put.. what am I doing wrong? :D

I don't think you are doing anything wrong. I pasted same code in JS console and it is giving proper result.

You can also consider different ways to store same data.
Example -

So now, if you want data by date in future you can get that by using filter
let data_2017 = data.filter(x => x.date === '2017');

It is correct !! I received { Income Statement: { Annually: { Revenue: {2017:10000000} } } } at console as an output with your given code.
Are u trying to save that data in some variable using test() ??
If yes then you need to use return data at the end of the definition on the function test instead of consol.log(data).

Function returning object instead of Array, unable to .Map

I'm parsing an order feed to identify duplicate items bought and group them with a quantity for upload. However, when I try to map the resulting array, it's showing [object Object], which makes me think something's converting the return into an object rather than an array.
The function is as follows:

When I JSON.stringify() the output, I can see that it's pulling the correct info from the function, but I can't figure out how to get the calling function to pull it as an array that can then be mapped rather than as an object.
The correct output, which sits within a much larger feed that gets uploaded, should look like this:

Turns out the code was correct all along, but I was running into a limitation of the console itself. I was able to verify this by simply working with the hard-coded values, and then querying the nested array separately.

In the code above the compressedOrder fucntion returns an array of objects where each object has sku, price and qtty attribute.
Further you are using a map on this array and returning an object again which has attributes id, price and quantity.
What do you expect from this.
Not sure what exactly solution you need but I've read your question and the comments, It looks like you need array of arrays as response.
So If I've understood your requirement correctly and you could use lodash then following piece of code might help you:

P.S. It is assumed that compressedOrder response looks like array of objects.

Preventing duplicate objects from being added to array?

I am building a little shop for a client and storing the information as an array of objects. But I want to ensure that I am not creating "duplicate" objects. I have seen similar solutions, but perhaps it is my "newness" to coding preventing me from getting the gist of them to implement in my own code, so I'd like some advice specific to what I have done.
I have tried putting my code in an if look, and if no "part", my variable looking for part number, exists in the code, then add the part, and could not get it to function.
Here is the function I am working on:

You can create a proxy and use Map to hold and access values, something like this

If you want to do the checking on both 'part' and 'description' properties, you may replace the if statement with if(arr[0] === obj.part && arr[1] === obj.description).

Okay, you have multiple possible approaches to this. All of them need you to specify some kind of identifier on the items which the user can add. Usually, this is just an ID integer.
So, if you have that integer you can do the following check to make sure it's not in the array of objects:
let cart = [{ id: 1, title: "Dog toy" }, { id: 2, title: "Best of Stackoverflow 2018" }];

Another approach is saving the items by their id in an object:

How can I reformat this simple JSON so it doesn't catch "Circular structure to JSON" exception?

Introduction
I'm learning JavaScript on my own and JSON its something along the path. I'm working on a JavaScript WebScraper and I want, for now, load my results in JSON format.
I know I can use data base, server-client stuff, etc to work with data. But I want to take this approach as learning JSON and how to parse/create/format it's my main goal for today.
Explaining variables
As you may have guessed the data stored in the fore mentioned variables comes from an html file. So an example of the content in:

Code explanation
I have previously loaded into arrays (users, GDP, regionsm align) those store the data (String format) I had extracted from a website.
My idea was to then "dump" it into an object with which the stringify() function format would format it into JSON.
I have tested it without the loop (static data just for testing) and it works.

Test code that works

Notice in comparison to the previous code, right now I am inputing "manually" the name of the country object.
This way absolutely works as you can see below:
Now, if I change 'CountryTest' to into a users[i] where I store country names (Forget about why countries are tagged users, it is out of the scope of this question)
It shows me the previous circular error.
A "Partial Solution" for this was to add +"" which, as I said, partially solved the problem as now there is not "Circular Error"

Circular structure error occurs when you have a property of the object which is the object itself directly (a -> a) or indirectly (a -> b -> a).
To avoid the error message, tell JSON.stringify what to do when it encounters a circular reference. For example, if you have a person pointing to another person ("parent"), which may (or may not) point to the original person, do the following:
JSON.stringify( that.person, function( key, value) {
if( key == 'parent') { return value.id;}
else {return value;}
})
The second parameter to stringify is a filter function. Here it simply converts the referred object to its ID, but you are free to do whatever you like to break the circular reference.
You can test the above code with the following:

From your output, it looks as though users is a list of DOM nodes. Rather than referring to these directly (where there are all sort of possible cyclical structures), if you just want their text, instead of using users directly, try something like
country : [
{
"name" : users[i].textContent // maybe also followed by `.trim()
}
]
Or you could do this up front to your whole list:
const usersText = [...users].map(node => node.textContent)
and then use usersText in place of users as you build your object.
If GDP, regions and align are also references to your HTML, then you might have to do the same with them.
EUREKA!
As some of you have mentioned above, let me tell you it is not a problem of circularity, at first..., in the JSON design. It is an error of the data itself.
When I scraped the data it came in html format i.e <td>whatever</td>, I did not care about that as I could simply take it away later. I was way too focused in having the JSON well formatted and learning.
As #VLAZ and #Scott Sauyezt mentioned above, it could be that some of the data, if it is not well formatted into string, it might be referring to itself somehow as so I started to work on that.
Lets have a look at this assumption...
To extract the data I used the cheerio.js which gives you a kind of jquery thing to parse html.
To extract the name of the country I used:
nullTest = ($('table').eq(2).find('tr').eq(i).find('td').find('a').last());

(nullTest helps me avoid nulls, I will implement some RegEx when everything works to polish the code a bit)
This "query" would output me something like:

or else.
to get rid off this html thing just add .html() at the end of the "jquery" such as:
($('table').eq(2).find('tr').eq(i).find('td').find('a').last().html());
That way you are now working with String and avoiding any error and thus solves this question.

JAVASCRIPT object to array conversion

I search on stackoverflow before post my question, but I didn't find any solution. I have an object like this :

Assuming that you won't have more than one object/array in each layer, this should get you what you need.

You want to acess it with variable.
For avoid bug, I strong recommend you to check if the variable value key exist in the array/object like :

Turn Observable Array into nested JSON

I'm having a problem getting an array of information stored properly as JSON.
I made a fiddle to illustrate the problem. Enter a set of tags and take a look at the console to see the output.
More explanation:
So I have an input that takes in a comma-separated list of tags, which I then format.

I thought what I needed to do next was the following:
loop over the array and create a 'tag' object for each item which also includes an id for the tag and the id of the contact the tag is associated with.
Each object is pushed to tags, an observable array.

I tried this suggestion, and the tag json is structured correctly, but it is stored with escaped quotes, so that seems wrong.

I would recommend you knockout.mapping plugin for KO, it allow map complicated JSON structure to view model, even without declarations.
From the documentation
Let’s say you have a JavaScript object that looks like this:
var data = {

You can map this to a view model without any problems:
var viewModel = ko.mapping.fromJS(data);
Now, let’s say the data is updated to be without any typos:
var data = {

Two things have happened here: name was changed from Scot to Scott and children[0].name was changed from Alicw to the typo-free Alice. You can update viewModel based on this new data:
ko.mapping.fromJS(data, viewModel);
And name would have changed as expected. However, in the children array, the child (Alicw) would have been completely removed and a new one (Alice) added. This is not completely what you would have expected. Instead, you would have expected that only the name property of the child was updated from Alicw to Alice, not that the entire child was replaced!

To solve this, you can specify which key the mapping plugin should use to determine if an object is new or old. You would set it up like this:

In the jsfiddle you were using Knockout 3.0 which doesn't have support for textInput. This was added in 3.2. To use version 3.2 you need to use a cdn such as this: http://cdnjs.com/libraries/knockout
There was typeo in your binding. sumbit should be submit.
There was a problem with your constructor for single_tag. id was not used so I removed it:

Currently also contactId is not set because the observable has not been set to a value.
To convert to JSON you need to use ko.toJSON instead of ko.toJS:

So my problem was more basic than I was realizing. I'm using JSON Server to serve up my data, and I was pulling information from two parts of the database (contacts & tags).
When I tried to update my tags, I was trying to apply them to a property that didn't exist on the contact JSON in my database. Posting the tags separately worked though.
