Redux state update doesn't map to props immediately/synchronous. Best practice? - javascript

My issue is the following:
redux state updates won't be mapped to the props immediately. This does not refer to useState of react. I'm referring to react-redux, where the state updates should be synchronous, afaik. I know they could be batched, but not sure if that is relevant here. I assume the update is happening immediately, but the mapping is not. I don't know how to get around this. I tried to replicate the error in a "clean" environment. Here is the Component:
import React from 'react';
function MyComponent({ title, setTitle }) {
const handleclick = e => {
console.log(title);
setTitle("I don't get it.");
console.log(title);
};
return <p onClick={handleclick}>{title}</p>;
}
export default MyComponent;
Here is the ComponentContainer:
import React from 'react';
import { connect } from 'react-redux';
import { setTitle } from '../../reducers/customReducer/actions.js';
import MyComponent from './MyComponent.jsx';
export const MyComponentContainer = props => {
return <MyComponent {...props} />;
};
const mapStateToProps = state => {
return {
title: state.customData.title
};
};
const mapDispatchToProps = dispatch => {
return {
setTitle: newTitle => dispatch(setTitle(newTitle))
};
};
export default connect(
mapStateToProps,
mapDispatchToProps
)(MyComponentContainer);
I expect the second console.log to output the value I don't get it. But it doesn't. Though, the render update happens properly. Meaning the innerHTML of the p element will be updated and rendered accordingly "a bit later".
How do I make it, that I can access the updated value instantly? This is causing an issue in my real world application. I'm not trying to simply print some value there, but rather, change a value and then call another function, that based on the updated value performs some action. Since the value isn't changed/mapped instantly, it won't work.
Am I doing something that shouldn't be done?

React component re-rendering many times

i have a react component thats keep re-rendering idk why but i think the reason is the data fetching
data code :
export function KPI_Stock_Utilisation() {
const [kpi_stock_utilisation, setKpi_stock_utilisation] = useState([{}]);
useEffect(() => {
axios.get("http://localhost:5137/KPI_Stock_Utilisation").then((response) => {
setKpi_stock_utilisation((existingData) => {
return response.data;
});
});
}, []);
console.log('data get')
return kpi_stock_utilisation;
}
this log displayed many times , and the log in the component too
component code :
import React from "react";
import { KPI_Stock_Utilisation } from "../../Data/data";
import { useEffect } from "react";
export default function WarehouseUtilisChart(props) {
let kpi_stock_utilisations =KPI_Stock_Utilisation();
let Stock_utilisation = (kpi_stock_utilisations.length / 402) * 100;
console.log('component render')
return (
<div>
<p>{kpi_stock_utilisations}</p>
</div>
);
}
im new with react i tried useEffect inside the componenets but its not working
Calling the react custom hook KPI_Stock_Utilisation several times will for sure render more than once.
in your case I suggest you use useEffect in the same component as I will show you.
import React,{useEffect,useRef} from "react";
import { KPI_Stock_Utilisation } from "../../Data/data";
import axios from 'axios';
export default function WarehouseUtilisChart(props) {
const [kpi_stock_utilisation, setKpi_stock_utilisation] = useState([{}]);
const stock_utilisation= useRef(0);
useEffect(() => {
axios.get("http://localhost:5137/KPI_Stock_Utilisation").then((response) => {
stock_utilisation.current = (response.data.length / 402) * 100;
setKpi_stock_utilisation(response.data);
});
//this will guarantee that the api will be called only once
}, []);
//you should see this twice, one with the value 0, and another one, the calculated data
console.log('component render',stock_utilisation.current)
return (
<div>
<p>{kpi_stock_utilisations}</p>
</div>
);
}
To note, if you call this component from more than one location, for sure it will render several times - keep that in mind.
On the other hand, all your variables should always start with a lower case and try to name your variables like this: instead of kpi_stock_utilisation change it to kpiStockUtilisation for a better coding practice
You got into infinite loop.
Its hard to explain why it doesn't work as expected, but I can try.
First of all, useEffect with empty array of dependencies works like componentDidMount and fires only after (!) first render.
So you have some value returned from your let kpi_stock_utilisations =KPI_Stock_Utilisation(); then it rendered, after this your useEffect fires a request and set state, setting of state trigger re-render and new value to return, this new value trigger your parent component to return let kpi_stock_utilisations =KPI_Stock_Utilisation(); might run again.
If you are trying to create a custom hook for fetching some info, follow rules of hooks
I hope it helped you

Invalid hook call error when trying to set state

I have a scenario where I am forced to call a trigger method to show a modal from two different places, one using a hotkey combination and another by clicking on a toolbar button. In order to do so I have the following code, where I call the triggerCustomLinkModal to set the state but then I am hit with the Invalid Hook call error.
import { useState, useCallback, useEffect } from "react"
import { Dialog } from "#blueprintjs/core"
const useLocalState = () => {
const [isShown, setIsShown] = useState(false)
const setState = useCallback((state) => {
setIsShown(state)
})
const getState = useCallback(() => {
return isShown
})
return {
setState,
getState
}
}
export const CustomLinkModalUI = () => {
const { getState } = useLocalState()
return (
<>
<Dialog isOpen={getState()} />
</>
)
}
export const triggerCustomLinkModal = () => {
const { setState } = useLocalState()
setState()
}
Expanding from Chris answer in the comments ( You can't use hooks outside React components. -> so you can't call useLocalState() inside triggerCustomLinkModal since triggerCustomLinkModal is not a React component ):
You don't really need the useCallback hook or even the functions itself. Aaccording to react docs :
Note
React guarantees that setState function identity is stable and won’t
change on re-renders. This is why it’s safe to omit from the useEffect
or useCallback dependency list.
This also means that using useCallback hook to set a state it doesn't really make sense (because useCallback role is just to return a memoized callback)
What you basically need is a state set up in the closest parrent component and pass the setIsShown as a prop as well as the isShown function.
Your current implementation, even if it weren't for the error, it wouldn't refer to the same state since on each useLocalState() you are initializing a fresh new state (so you are not pointing to the same state in CustomLinkModalUI and triggerCustomLinkModal)

How to access redux-toolkit reducer/action from a class component using react-redux connect()?

I have a redux-toolkit store at store.js.
import { configureStore } from '#reduxjs/toolkit';
import productCurrency from './stateSlices/productCurrency';
const Store = configureStore({
reducer: {
productCurrency: productCurrency,
},
})
export default Store;
The createslice() function itself is in a different file and looks like this below.
import { createSlice } from '#reduxjs/toolkit'
const initialState = {
value: '$',
}
export const productCurrency = createSlice({
name: 'productCurrency',
initialState,
reducers: {
setproductCurrency(state, newState) {
state.value = newState
},
},
})
export const { setproductCurrency } = productCurrency.actions;
export default productCurrency.reducer;
My issue is that I have a class component NavSection that needs to access the initial state and the reducer action setproductCurrency() to change the state. I am trying to use the react-redux connect() function to accomplish that.
const mapStateToProps = (state) => {
const { productCurrency } = state
return { productCurrency: productCurrency.value }
}
const mapDispatchToProps = (dispatch) => {
return {
setproductCurrency: () => dispatch(setproductCurrency()),
dispatch,
}
}
export default connect(mapStateToProps, mapDispatchToProps)(NavSection);
Now, I am able to access the state by ussing this.props.productCurrency. Yet, if I try to access the setproductCurrency() by ussing this.props.setproductCurrency()... Chrome console gives me an error that "this.props.setproductCurrency() is not a function".
Is there a way of fixing this, or am I trying to do something impossible?
UPDATE #1
I think I just moved the ball in the right direction. I changed the onClick function to be an arrow function as shown below.
onClick={() => this.props.setproductCurrency('A$')}
Now, setproductCurrency() is considered a function, but it returns a different error when I click the button...
Objects are not valid as a React child (found: object with keys {type, payload}). If you meant to render a collection of children, use an array instead.
Why would this function now return an object? It is supposed to change the state and trigger a re-render of the page so that the class component can access the newly changed state.
To be clear, RTK has nothing to do with React-Redux, connect, or mapDispatch :)
The current error of "Objects are not valid as a React child" is because your reducer is wrong. A reducer's signature is not (state, newState). It's (state, action). So, your line state.value = newStateis reallystate.value = action`, and that's assigning the entire Redux action object as a value into the state. That's definitely not correct conceptually.
Instead, you need state.value = action.payload.

Using a global object in React Context that is not related to state

I want to have a global object that is available to my app where I can retrieve the value anywhere and also set a new value anywhere. Currently I have only used Context for values that are related to state i.e something needs to render again when the value changes. For example:
import React from 'react';
const TokenContext = React.createContext({
token: null,
setToken: () => {}
});
export default TokenContext;
import React, { useState } from 'react';
import './App.css';
import Title from './Title';
import TokenContext from './TokenContext';
function App() {
const [token, setToken] = useState(null);
return(
<TokenContext.Provider value={{ token, setToken }}>
<Title />
</TokenContext.Provider>
);
}
export default App;
How would I approach this if I just want to store a JS object in context (not a state) and also change the value anywhere?
The global context concept in React world was born to resolve problem with passing down props via multiple component layer. And when working with React, we want to re-render whenever "data source" changes. One way data binding in React makes this flow easier to code, debug and maintain as well.
So what is your specific purpose of store a global object and for nothing happen when that object got changes? If nothing re-render whenever it changes, so what is the main use of it?
Prevent re-render in React has multiple ways like useEffect or old shouldComponentUpdate method. I think they can help if your main idea is just prevent re-render in some very specific cases.
Use it as state management libraries like Redux.
You have a global object (store) and you query the value through context, but you also need to add forceUpdate() because mutating the object won't trigger a render as its not part of React API:
const globalObject = { counter: 0 };
const Context = React.createContext(globalObject);
const Consumer = () => {
const [, render] = useReducer(p => !p, false);
const store = useContext(Context);
const onClick = () => {
store.counter = store.counter + 1;
render();
};
return (
<>
<button onClick={onClick}>Render</button>
<div>{globalObject.counter}</div>
</>
);
};
const App = () => {
return (
<Context.Provider value={globalObject}>
<Consumer />
</Context.Provider>
);
};

How to update state using Redux?

I am using this starter kit https://github.com/davezuko/react-redux-starter-kit and am following some tutorials at the same time, but the style of this codebase is slightly more advanced/different than the tutorials I am watching. I am just a little lost with one thing.
HomeView.js - This is just a view that is used in the router, there are higher level components like Root elsewhere I don't think I need to share that, if I do let me know, but it's all in the github link provided above.
import React, { PropTypes } from 'react'
import { connect } from 'react-redux'
import { searchListing } from '../../redux/modules/search'
export class HomeView extends React.Component {
componentDidMount () {
console.log(this.props)
}
render () {
return (
<main onClick={this.props.searchListing}>
<NavBar search={this.props.search} />
<Hero/>
<FilterBar/>
<Listings/>
<Footer/>
</main>
)
}
}
I am using connect() and passing in mapStateToProps to tell the HomeView component about the state. I am also telling it about my searchListing function that is an action which returns a type and payload.
export const searchListing = (value) => {
console.log(value)
return {
type: SEARCH_LISTINGS,
payload: value
}
}
Obviously when I call the method inside the connect() I am passing in an empty object searchListing: () => searchListing({})
const mapStateToProps = (state) => {
return {
search: { city: state.search }
}
}
export default connect((mapStateToProps), { searchListing: () => searchListing({}) })(HomeView)
This is where I am stuck, I am trying to take the pattern from the repo, which they just pass 1, I think anytime that action is created the logic is just add 1 there is no new information passed from the component.
What I am trying to accomplish is input search into a form and from the component pass the users query into the action payload, then the reducer, then update the new state with the query. I hope that is the right idea.
So if in the example the value of 1 is hardcoded and passed into the connect() method, how can I make it so that I am updating value from the component dynamically? Is this even the right thinking?
You almost got it right. Just modify the connect function to pass the action you want to call directly:
const mapStateToProps = (state) => ({
search: { city: state.search }
});
export default connect((mapStateToProps), {
searchListing
})(HomeView);
Then you may use this action with this.props.searchListing(stringToSearch) where stringToSearch is a variable containing the input value.
Notice : You don't seem to currently retrieve the user query. You may need to retrieve it first and then pass it to the searchListing action.
If you need to call a function method, use dispatch.
import { searchListing } from '../../redux/modules/search';
const mapDispatchToProps = (dispatch) => ({
searchListing: () => {
dispatch(searchListing());
}
});
export default connect(mapStateToProps, mapDispatchToProps)(HomeView);
Then, you have made the function a prop, use it with searchListing.
