I am trying to populate a textInput spacer with a text file's contents. The said text file needs to be selected via a hover menu, which I am using for the first time. The interface is easy enough to set up, but the mechanics of populating the text box are trickier than I expected. I am probably missing something really simple because I am a rookie in this area.
Here is an example:-
<li><a>Jul 15, 2018</a></li>
<script>
var currentBaseValue;
$("#selectedBaseRelease").load("location_of_some_file", function() {
loadbaseText(currentBaseValue);
});
</script>
A bigger picture is here, which includes the loadbaseText function, among other things:-
https://jsfiddle.net/kehliah/z6y87x35/10/
Notice in the JS Fiddle example how two menu options under SP1-T simply point to remote web pages of pure text. (This is for example purposes only.) If I can get the two different loads to work, I can make appropriate edits on my end to point to files within my company's firewall/domain.
What am I missing? How can I get the contents of either SP1-T option to appear in the text box?
Looking at your jsfiddle, I could not find where you were actually calling any of your functions when clicking the <li> elements, this is made harder by the fact that all of your CSS, HTML, and JQuery are all together.
Anyway, here is one way of doing what you requested using JQuery. At the moment, which ever <li> element you click on replaces the textarea text with the text of that <li> element.
function populateTextArea(element) {
$("#baseText").text($(element).text());
}
<script src="https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/jquery/3.3.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
<ul>
<li><a onclick="populateTextArea(this);">Aug 30, 2018</a></li>
<li><a onclick="populateTextArea(this);">Jul 15, 2018</a></li>
</ul>
<textarea id="baseText"></textarea>

By RTE tags I mean <b>, <i>, <u>, or <s> tags. I've been working on a RTE, and using jquery I can get the entire area to bold, but I want to be able to bold only a specific portion (think google docs, word, or any other text editor).
The mozilla site only had deprecated information, and inspecting elements on other sites (including this one) were no help to me.
I am trying to edit a content-editable <div> currently, although I'm open to switching to a text area if that works better.
//my jquery for bolding the entire thing
var bolded = false;
$("#bold").on('click', function(){
//access css of editor div, change status using a ternary
$("#editor").css("font-weight", bolded ? this.value : 'bold');
bolded = !bolded;
//log for debugging
console.log('clicked bold: ' + bolded);
});
my HTML5 for the editor. Sectioned off for formatting purposes.
<section>
<div id="editor" contenteditable="TRUE"></div>
</section>
My buttons are id'd as "bold", "itallic", "strike", and "underl", but I really just want to get one of them working so I can work from there.
EDIT
I realized that this question isn't as straightforward as I'd hoped. I have a <div>, and I would like to have multiple different formats inside of this <div>. The way I would do it logially is by inserting a <b> tag on the click of a button / keyboard command and then continuing to type from there, but I can't find any resources for it. Hope this clears that up.
EDIT 2
So as far as I can tell, the document.execCommand() still works but is predicted to be replaced by Input Events Level 2. I can't find any readable documentation for implementing this. Does anybody know how to do this?
Answer for current methodology (document.execCommand('command')):
Attaching a simple onclick() to the buttons works, where that onclick is a function that runs the aforementioned command with no particular focus:
function format(command, value){
//In use, "value" is left blank in order to do the current selection / no selection
document.execCommand(command, false, value);
}
<button onclick="format('bold')"><strong>B</strong></button>
<button onclick="format('italic')"><em>I</em></button>
Please note that this functionality WILL be deprecated, but no replacement has come up yet. When I know more, I will come back and edit this answer.
Main Target :
To create a website that will have a live preview of an HTML/CSS code.
More specifically :
The HTML/CSS code will be editable form the user in some specific parts. So, the code in the live preview will not derive from text areas but from divs.
Image of what I am trying to do :
So, in my Previous Question I tried to find a way to make the live preview box work after getting the code from the black boxes. It did not work because the code was given in a div tag and not a textarea. I would like to add that the code in the div tags use xmp tags because some parts are editable from the user.
Now, I have replaced the divs with textarea tags but the EDIT function does not work.
Main Question :
How do I edit parts of a textarea text? Below, I made it work for a div tag but not a textarea. How can I make the following work for a textarea?
$('input#thebox1').keypress(function(e) {
console.log($(this).val());
if(e.which == 13 && $(this).val().length > 0) {
var c = $(this).val();
$('.popup1').removeClass().addClass(c).text(c);
}
});
<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/2.1.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
<div>Replace Title Background Color: </div><input type="text" id='thebox1'>
<div id="copyTarget1" class="innerbox css">
<blockquote>
<pre>
<code>
.title
{
background: #<b class="popup1" style="color:#FF0000;">value </b>;
vertical-align: middle;
}
</code>
</pre>
</blockquote>
</div>

I thought about taking another approach to make your life easier using Ace (Cloud9 Editor). It is an awesome solution to get code editors for different languages. All built in JavaScript. It is quite easy to integrate. I just downloaded it to create the case you are trying to build.
You can find the example I have just made here: https://dubaloop.io/dev/html_css_js_editor/
Basically, you load the library for ace:
<script src="src-noconflict/ace.js" type="text/javascript" charset="utf-8"></script>
Then you create a "pre" container for your HTML, CSS, JavaScript editor:
<pre class="editor" id="editor_js">
function foo(items) {
alert('works');
}</pre>
You will be able to convert them into code editor by using the function:
var editor_js = ace.edit("editor_js");
editor_js.setTheme("ace/theme/monokai");
editor_js.session.setMode("ace/mode/javascript");
It will generate a nice code editor that can through error, warnings, etc. You also have different themes. It is very user friendly as you could see. In my example I just get the content of each code container and send it to an blank iframe that. In order to retrieve the content you can use:
editor_js.getValue();
Check the source code for example I sent you above. I also created .zip with the example here: https://dubaloop.io/dev/html_css_js_editor/example.zip
Have a look to see if this would work for you.
GitHub repo for ACE: https://github.com/ajaxorg/ace-builds
I hope it helps.
UPDATE:
I decided to update the response to replay to your last comment. A few things about it:
First, I updated the code in the link I sent you previously: https://dubaloop.io/dev/html_css_js_editor/
The idea was to check the guide to see how you can manipulate the input and adjust it to what you need. They have great manipulation options. This is the guide: https://ace.c9.io/#nav=howto&api=editor
I just made a short version of what you are trying to do: I am replacing the content for the <h1> in HTML editor, by entering it in a textfield input; similar to what you are trying to achieve. I set the html code editor as a readonly so you cant edit on it. Have a look and let me know.
Second, I created another example using your code. You can check it here: https://dubaloop.io/dev/html_css_js_editor/example.html
I noticed that the first problem you were having was related to how you were triggering the preview update ($('.innerbox').on("keyup"...)). There was not keyup event there. For now I set it on any input when you hit enter. The other big problem, and probably the main one you had was how you were accessing the iframes through jQuery. You need to use $('selector').contents().find('selector2'). Finally another problem was the you were retrieving the data getting the attribute value from your code wrapper. What you need to get is the actual content as flat text in order to avoid other html content. In order to do that you need to use .text() (Please check the updated GetHtml() and GetCss() functions).
I hope you can make it work from here. Still, I like option 1 :P
I hope it helps.
I don't know anything about programming, so I'm trying to find out where to start learning + how difficult my problem is. Since I don't have any programming knowledge, I'll try to describe my problem in natural language, hope that is OK.
I have the html file of the penal code (a type of law). It contains many different rules, that are in numbered paragraphs (§ 1, § 4, etc).
Now I want to look at the source code and manually “tag” the paragraphs according to specific criteria. For example all the paragraphs that concern the use of a weapon get the “weapon” tag, or that have a minimum sentencing of 1 year and higher get a “crime” tag, etc.
At the end I want to view an interactive html file in Firefox/Chrome, where I could for example click on a “crime” button, and all §§§ that were tagged with “crime” would appear in bold red, keeping the rest of the document intact. Ideally I would also be able to click on “weapon” and would only see the §§§ tagged with “weapon”, making the rest of the document disappear.
The function it's just for me, so it would only need to work on a Xubuntu 11.04 desktop with Firefox or Chrome. The original source file would be http://bundesrecht.juris.de/stgb/BJNR001270871.html. The code looks strange to me, is there a way to convert it into something more easily manually editable?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Primarily I don't know where to start learning. Do I need to know HTML, jQuery, or a programming language like Python? Do I need to set up an Apache server on my PC? Perhaps because of my ignorance of programming, this seems like a not too complex function. Am I mistaken in the belief that an amateur could build something like thins maybe one month?
I think this is not very difficult to make, although the tagging process can be quite labour-intensive.
You don't need much programming skills, especially when you want to tag stuff manually. You probably only need basic HTML and CSS and some Javascript to pull this off.
What I would do is the following
Create a local copy of the HTML file (use Save As in your browser)
Manually tag each § by giving it the appropriate tag as a classname
Create a list of all available tags and let javascript filter out the § you'd like to see
Now Step 1 is pretty easy I guess, so I'll go right to Step 2. The paragraphs in the HTML file are formatted according to a certain pattern, e.g.:
<div class="jnnorm" id="BJNR001270871BJNE009802307" title="Einzelnorm">
<div class="jnheader">
<a name="BJNR001270871BJNE009802307"/>Nichtamtliches Inhaltsverzeichnis
<h3><span class="jnenbez">§ 31</span> <span class="jnentitel">Rücktritt vom Versuch der Beteiligung</span></h3>
</div>
<div class="jnhtml">
<div>
<div class="jurAbsatz">
(1) Nach § 30 wird nicht bestraft, wer freiwillig etc.
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
What you want to do now is add your tag to the <div> element with the class jnnorm. So the above example would become (if the tag weapon would be appropriate):
<div class="jnnorm weapon" id="BJNR001270871BJNE009802307" title="Einzelnorm">
You do that for each paragraph in the HTML. This will be pretty boring, but okay.
Now Step 3. First create a list of links of all the tags you've just created. How you create lists in html is explained here. Put this at the top of the HTML document. What you want to do with javascript is when you click on one of the links in your list that only the paragraphs with the given class are shown. This is most easily done with jQuery's click event and the show and hide methods.
Updated with jQuery example
Make a menu like this
<ul id="menu">
<li id="weapon">Weapons</li>
<li id="crime">Crime</li>
</ul>
And then use the following jQuery
<script>
$(document).ready(function(){
// When a <li> element inside an <ul> with the id "menu" is clicked, do the following
$('ul#menu li').click(function(){
// Get the id of the <li> element and append a '.' so we get the right name for the tag (class) we want to show
var tag = '.' + $(this).attr('id');
// Hide all elements of class 'jnnorm'
$('.jnnorm').hide();
// Show all elements with the class name of tag we want
$(tag).show();
});
});
</script>
Note: HTML classes are denoted as .classname in jQuery whereas HTML id's are denoted as #idname.
Good luck!
This could be done using purely HTML/CSS and Javascript, so not server would be needed. JQuery would make the javascript side easier.
Basic idea of how to do it:
Use CSS style classes for your "tags"
Have a button for each tag with an onclick handler that uses JQuery to highlight everything with that tag (or make everything else invisible)
The HTML source code actually looks nicely structured, though it could use a few more linebreaks for sub-paragraphs. Any good HTML/XML editor has an autoformat feature that handles this, though you could get any specific format you want using a programming language with convenient text-manipulation facilities, such as Perl, awk or Python.
I have a list being displayed on a JSP. On mouse hover on any of the value i need to show a description corresponding that value. Need to show description not as an alert and also cannot make the values as hyperlink.
eg.
suppose the value is ABC so on mouse hover should show AppleBoyCat.
need to use onmouseover. let me know how to do it..
What do you want to do? If you just want to show a tooltip, you can set the title attribute of any element and it will be displayed as a tooltip.
Also, the abbr tag can be used as tooltips too:
<abbr title="test">stuff</abbr>
You can go about it in two ways:
1 - a hidden dom object (a div for instance) which reveals itself when you roll over whatever
or
2 - you can rewrite the html of the particular element you're mousing over.
You can load this data in when you load everything else (either as Javascript objects, or as markup, though that's much bulkier) or you can asynchronously load the description data from a service when you mouse over (though you'll have more lag).
jQuery is a quick and dirty way to achieve this (more quick than dirty), but straight JS or pretty much any other JS library will do as well.
Perhaps not the cleanest solution but something like this:
<a class='hover' rel='tooltip'>Link</a>
//Some hidden div, putting css inline just for example
<div id='tooltip' style='display:none;'>Content</div>
$(function() {
$('.hover').mouseover(function() {
var tooltip = $(this).attr('rel');
$('#' + tooltip).fadeIn();
});
});
And offcourse add a callback hiding it again. It just takes the value from rel of the link and use as an id for the div to show.
This is a quick and dirty solution, can be made alot smoother if you just work with it a little;)
There also alot of plugins out there allowing the same functionality in a cleaner fashion.
*Edit: Just noticed you added a comment on another post that you can't use jQuery.. shouldn't tag a post with something you're not intending to use.
As TJHeuvel already said, you can simply use the title attribute.
Best approach is to build the list with both the value and title attribute from within JSP, if not possible for some reason, you can build client side array of each value and its corresponding description then using JavaScript dynamically assign the title on mouseover.
Show us some more code to get more/better help.
For simple tooltips, the title attribute is most effective, as pointed out by TJHeuvel
If you need more advanced tooltips with HTML and CSS formatting, I'd suggest you use an external library.
One that works nicely without jQuery ist wz_tooltip download here, documentation here
When included correctly, you can add tooltips by calling the functions Tip() and UnTip() as follows:
Homepage
I have two html pages, when you click on something on the first html, it will go to the second one. What I want to do is to show text according to what you clicked on the first html. different texts are wrapped with different ids. Here's how I wrote:
I'm expecting to see two.html load the text with id "one", but it doesn't work, does anyone know what I did wrong?
Here's the code on second page:
<ul id="menu" class="aaa">
<li><a id="one" href="#">one</a></li>
<li><a id="two" href="#">two</a></li>
<li><a id="three" href="#">three</a></li>
</ul>
And I have a JS file to modify each id:
$("one").observe('click', function() {
$('Pic').writeAttribute('src',"picone.jpg");
$('Bio').update("texthere!");
});
Same for two and three.
Right now if I click on a button on the first page, it will always show
the text and pic for "one", no matter which button I click.
But I want to see the pic and text for "two" if i click on it.
What you want to do is simulate a click on your anchor when the page loads. Since you're using jQuery, the simplest approach (but far form best) would be the following:
$(window).observe('domready', function () {
$(location.hash).click();
});
attach ondomready-event to window. Fetch element with id=one (with jQuery this would be '#one', same as your location.hash would be, very handy in this case), trigger a click on it.
You might need to replace $(location.hash).click(); with $(location.hash).get(0).click() since jQuery tend to return arrays of jQuery-objects.
But a better solution in your case would be to have an event-handler that you can trigger manually, thus circumvent the need of firing events, aswell as drop the anchors and put onclick directly on your li's.
And furthermore, why do you load a second page when all you seem to want to do is to show/hide content dynamically? Do it on the same page...
the #blastuffbla is not an ID but the location hash.
You can acces it by using:
self.document.location.hash
which would return #hash, if you would only want hash you would use:
self.document.location.hash.substring(1)
Hope this helps
tags do not have id's but names to handle the anchors in Urls, you will still need the ID to manage them in JS though.
So your list should be:
<ul id="menu" class="aaa">
<li><a id="one" name="one" href="#">one</a></li>
<li><a id="two" name="two" href="#">two</a></li>
<li><a id="three" name="three" href="#">three</a></li></ul>
Your javascript seemed correct though.
When you say "different ids" how are you setting up your anchors on the 2nd page? The anchor on the 2nd page should look like this:
<a name='one'></a>
Put this right above the text that you want to mark on the 2nd page.
Do you want to scroll the page to the positon of the id "one"? Maybe the content of the page is too small that you cant scroll there. I mean sometimes the browser cant move the element marked with the id to the top of the canvas and looks like it doenst scrolled there. Try to include enough space after the element to make it scrollable to the top of the browser.
Hope that helps.
