Simple Next and Previous Show and Hide with jQuery - javascript

I'm trying to figure out the simplest way to show and hide a series of divs with Previous and Next buttons by adding and removing some classes.
So far, I can get the Next button to trigger, but it's adding the active class to all of the divs and not just the next one in line.
I've been reading through other examples and so far they seem really bloated or not what I am looking for specifically.
Here's what I have so far:
Codepen Link: https://codepen.io/ultraloveninja/pen/pxrrmy/
HTML:
<div class="group">
<div class="item active">
<h2>Thing One</h2>
</div>
<div class="item">
<h2>Thing Two</h2>
</div>
<div class="item">
<h2>Thing Three</h2>
</div>
</div>
<div class="btns">
Previous
<a class="btn next" href="#">Next</a>
</div>
JS:
$('.next').on("click", function(){
if($('.item').hasClass('active')) {
$('.item').next().addClass('active');
}
})
CSS:
body {
padding: 10px;
}
.active {
display:block !important;
}
.item {
display:none;
}
It seems like this should be fairly simple, but I can't seem to think of how to target the next div by itself without it showing all of the other ones.

Basically you should get your last active element and activate next after it:
$('.next').on("click", function(){
const $active = $('.item.active');
const $next = $active.next();
if ($next.length) {
$active.removeClass('active');
$next.addClass('active');
}
})
The problem in your current code is that you are getting all items and performing hasClass on all of them so it returns true all the time because there is at least one element with this class and then you are getting next element after each item element and add active class to them so all of your elements are activated in result.

I think you want something like this
$('a.next').on("click", function(){
var a = $('.item.active').last();
a.next().addClass('active');
a.removeClass('active')
});

if data attribute is true, add class

I want buttons in a slider to get underlined when a slide is visible.
I think I need to check if a data attribute is true, and then add class.
When inspecting my webpage, I find this in properties > dataset: DOMStringMap > isactiveslide: "true"
I need to check if a slide has isactiveslide: "true" (or even data-isactiveslide: "true") and then add class.
I think I am close and have tried these two codes:
jQuery(function () {
if (jQuery('menu1').attr('isactiveslide') === true) {
jQuery(this).find("#test1").addClass("underline");
}
})
and
jQuery('menu1').each(function(){
if(jQuery(this).attr('isactiveslide')==true())
jQuery('#test1').addClass('underline');
})
EDIT (added after some great answers and questions)
And here is the section, where the data attribute "isactiveslide" occurs, copied from the page:
<rs-slide data-key="rs-1898" data-title="WORKS" data-in="o:0;" data-out="a:false;" class="menus works1" id="works1" data-originalindex="2" data-origindex="1" data-description="" data-sba="" data-scroll-based="false" style="overflow: hidden; height: 100%; width: 100%; z-index: 20; opacity: 1; visibility: inherit;" data-owidth="300" data-oheight="200" data-rspausetimeronce="0" data-isactiveslide="true"><
So, the next slide which is not yet shown has data-isactiveslide="false". I reckon, identifying "true" is how I can add class.
EDIT May 4th - I think I am close now, but it still does not work.
jQuery('#slide1[data-isactiveslide="true"]')("#slide1-btn").addClass('.underline');
any help is very appreciated!
Can be easily done by css:
You need to find the class applied on the active slide and button
rs-slide.menus[data-isactiveslide="true"] .button-class-name-here{
text-decoration:underline!important;
}
or
Find which slider you are using and on the slide change event of that slider apply the class on the button for styling.
Try this code:
var $ = document.querySelectorAll.bind(document) //No need for jquery - simply import the function
$(".menu1[data-is-active-slide]").forEach((el, index) => {
$("#test1")[index].classList.add('underline');
$("#test1")[index].innerText = "Selected!";
console.log(1);
})
<div class="menu1" data-is-active-slide='true'>1</div>
<div id="test1"></div>
<div class="menu1" data-is-active-slide='false'>2</div>
<div id="test1"></div>
<div class="menu1">3</div>
<div class="menu2" data-is-active-slide='false'>4</div>
<div class="menu2">5</div>
<div class="menu1" data-is-active-slide>6</div>
<div id="test1"></div>
<div class="menu2">7</div>
<div class="menu1 menu2" data-is-active-slide="true">8</div>
<div id="test1"></div>
<div class="menu1 menu2">9</div>
The beginning declaration of $ is simply defining it since I did not import jQuery.
The next part is where the 'fun' begins. I used $(".menu1[data-is-active-slide]") to select all elements with class menu1 and with the property that data-is-active-slide is present. Then, I simply defined an action inside the function, for the sake of demonstrating that it works.

JS toggle for multiple div elements

What should I do if I have multiple elements in HTML foreach and I need to make them all a toggle slider what opens div block with specific information about the element and I need to add close button too if a user wants to close the div. Sorry, I don't have any code to show because I did not find anything that suits my needs. The main idea is to have a product page with products that are displayed on a page using foreach... Then when you click on a product toggle div block is opened with information about a product. What should I search and what to use, I can't find anything because I am limited with my knowledge. Sorry for terrible English.
You can easily control the visibility of an element either within the div you're clicking or after it using a class you toggle. Here's an example controlling the div after one of the divs that controls the toggle:
document.getElementById("container").addEventListener("click", function(e) {
var toggleDiv = e.target.closest(".toggle");
if (toggleDiv && this.contains(toggleDiv)) {
toggleDiv.classList.toggle("closed");
}
});
.closed + .detail {
display: none;
}
<div id="container">
<div class="toggle closed">Product A</div>
<div class="detail">Details about Product A</div>
<div class="toggle closed">Product B</div>
<div class="detail">Details about Product B</div>
<div class="toggle closed">Product C</div>
<div class="detail">Details about Product C</div>
</div>
The key bits there are:
Hiding the details via CSS with the adjacent sibling combinator (+)
Toggling the class on the toggling div
I used event delegation to hook up the handler, but you could instead hook it up to each individual div if you preferred. Note that the Element#closest method I used is relatively new, you may need a polyfill or a loop on parentNode instead.
From what i have understood.
You need to toggle div elements using button tag and the button u click will show that particular div element.
<div id="container1" class={container1 ? "show" : "hide"}>
container1
</div>
<div id="container2"class={container2 ? "show" : "hide"}>
container2
</div>
<div id="container3"class={container3 ? "show" : "hide"}>
container3
</div>
and three button tags to call toggle function to show the three div element.
<div class="container">
<button name="container1" onclick=(toggle())>Container1</button>
<button name="container2" onclick=(toggle())>Container2</button>
<button name="container3" onclick=(toggle())>Container3</button>
</div>
toggle function
function toggle(e) {
if(e.target.name === 'container1'){
container1 = true;
}
else if(e.target.name === 'container2'){
container2 = true;
}
else if(e.target.name === 'container3'){
container3 = true;
}
}
css part
.show{
display: block;
}
.hide{
display: none;
}

Select items from different lists at the same time

This is the HTML I got to do a button click event to control selected items in more than one list.
$('#button').click(function(){
var $next = $('.section.selected').removeClass('selected').next('.section')
if ($next.length) {
$next.addClass('selected');
}
else {
$(".section:first").addClass('selected');
}
});
//On click I select next div with same class and remove selected from previous.
//How to loop? After 3 is selected, I want it to go to one again.
.selected { background:red }
<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/2.1.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
<div id="all">
<div class="section selected">ONE</div>
<div class="section">TWO</div>
<div class="section">THREE</div>
</div>
<div id="all">
<div class="section selected">ONE</div>
<div class="section">TWO</div>
<div class="section">THREE</div>
</div>
<br />
CLICK
However, because the items are using the same class name, at the end, the script can't decide which one is first / last item.
Can anyone give me an idea?
To get the items, use Queries like first-child, last-child and so on.
For more detals, Check jQuery API Documentation
Use this instead $(".section:first-child").addClass('selected') in your else condition

slideDown does not work for the first time

I'm adding animation to show a hidden div when a checkbox is changed,
The first time it's clicked the div appears with no animation but it works both ways after the first time.
How can I make it work also on the first time?
Here is my div (also using bootstrap)
var postOptionsSourcesWrapper = $("#post-options-sources-wrapper");
var postOptionsExclusiveCheckbox = $("#post-exclusive-cb");
postOptionsExclusiveCheckbox.change(function() {
if ($(this).is(":checked")) {
postOptionsSourcesWrapper.slideUp(300, "easeOutCirc", function() {
postOptionsSourcesWrapper.addClass("hidden");
});
} else {
postOptionsSourcesWrapper.removeClass("hidden");
postOptionsSourcesWrapper.slideDown(300, "easeOutCirc");
}
});
<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/2.1.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
<div id="post-options-sources-wrapper" class="margin-b-5 hidden">
<label class="text-md thick-600">Original post references</label>
<div class="box-marker box-marker-white">
<div class="thick-600 color-gray text-sm text-uppercase">
Add one or multiple sources.
</div>
</div>
</div>
UPDATE: this issue is solved by adding display:none; to the div
When adding the bootstrap class .hidden to hide for some reason it's not adding the display:none; that is part of the .hidden class in bootstrap... not sure why, but adding the style display:none; or calling postOptionsSourcesWrapper.hide() solves this issue.
This code will achieve what you want to achieve.
You just have to replace your script with this one.
var postOptionsSourcesWrapper = $("#post-options-sources-wrapper");
var postOptionsExclusiveCheckbox = $("#post-exclusive-cb");
postOptionsSourcesWrapper.hide();
postOptionsExclusiveCheckbox.change(function() {
postOptionsSourcesWrapper.slideToggle(300,postOptionsSourcesWrapper.is(":checked"));
});

How do I make this code work for each click?

I have h3 block's and on click of each of the block I am showing the section associated with it. It is actually something like accordion(hide and collapse). I have also given a drop icon to the h3 tags, means that when the block is opened the h3 should have a dropicon pointing downwards while others h3 should have there dropocons towards right. I am controlling this behaviour using backgroundPosition. I am using the jQuery visible condition to see if the particular block is visible then give its drop icon one background position and to the rest other. It works fine but only for first click. It doesn't work for second click; can somebody explain why? Here is my code:
if($(this).next().is(':visible')) {
$(this).css({'backgroundPosition':'0px 14px'});
}
else {
$("h3").css({'backgroundPosition':'0px -11px'});
}
UPDATED CODE:
$("h3").click(function() {
$(".tabs").hide();
$(this).next().show();
if($(this).next().is(':visible')) {
$(this).css({'backgroundPosition':'0px 14px'});
} else {
$("h3").css({'backgroundPosition':'0px -11px'});
}
})
If you wrap the whole block in a div it might make traversing easier.
Html:
<div class="drop-block">
<h3>Click this</h3>
<ul>
<li>Drop</li>
<li>it</li>
<li>like</li>
<li>it's</li>
<li>hot</li>
</ul>
</div>
Jquery:
var dropper = $('.drop-block');
$(dropper).find('h3').click(function(){
$(this).toggleClass('active');
$(dropper).find('ul').toggle();
});
Example
I Belive that you are looking for live
So it will be something like this:
$(element).live('click', function(){
if($(this).next().is(':visible')) {
$(this).css({'backgroundPosition':'0px 14px'});
}
else {
$("h3").css({'backgroundPosition':'0px -11px'});
}
}
Instead of editing the css of them, make a css class "open" (or similar), and then add / remove the class on the click to open / close.
It is much easier to debug by checking for the existence of a class than it is to check the css properties of something in JS.
Better make a class name for each situation and easly handle the action
$('h3').on('click', function(){
if($(this).hasClass('opened')) {
$(this).removeClass('opened');
}
else {
$(this).addClass('opened');
}
}
$(document).on('click', 'h3', function(e) {
$(".tabs").hide('slow');
$(this).css({'backgroundPosition':'0px 14px'});
if(!$(this).next().is(':visible'))
{
$("h3").css({'backgroundPosition':'0px -11px'});
$(this).next().show('slow');
}
});
You can remove 'slow' from show/hide if animation is not required
Here is an example.
It sounds like you need to bind click events to the h3 elements and toggle the visibility of the child elements:
$(function(){
$("h3").click(function(){
$(this).next(".tabs").toggle();
});
});
Example markup:
<h3>Item 1</h3>
<div class="tabs">
<h4>Option 1</h4>
<h4>Option 2</h4>
</div>
<h3>Item 2</h3>
<div class="tabs">
<h4>Option 1</h4>
<h4>Option 2</h4>
</div>
Here's a jsFiddle to demonstrate.
