How can I close modal dialog(s) from main page after some time, or when session expires, using JavaScript or jQuery?
Dialog is opened using the following code :

Modal dialog can be closed from himself, but it's not solution in my case.
While the modal dialog is open, javascript execution on the main page is stopped, because it is waiting for a return value (even though you may not want to return one, or do anything with what it returns).
You can check this with this little example. When you click the button, the page opens, and the timer stops updating. When you close the page, execution is resumed:

So, if you want to close the window automatically, you need to do it from the new document itself. My advice? Implement your timer in the window.load event of your modal page, so it can close itself after the desired time.

I want that when a user clicks on any external link (identified by either particular id or class) on my site then he should get a popup with a counter of 10 seconds, after 10 seconds the popup should close and the user should be able to access the external URL. I'm able to show a warning like below but I don't know how to add timeout to it, also this is a confirm box, not a popup where I can add some div and more stuff for user to see until the counter stops.

I've put together a little demo to help you out. First thing to be aware of is your going to need to make use of the setTimeout function in JavaScript. Secondly, the confirmation boxes and alert windows will not give you the flexibility you need. So here's my HTML first I show a simple link and then created a popup div that will be hidden from the users view.

If you run, you will see the popup is displayed and the countdown is properly counting down. There's still some tweaks of course that it needs, but you should be able to see the overall idea of whats being accomplished. Hope it helps!

You cannot using a confirm native dialog box as this kind of dialog, as alert(), is blocking all script execution. You have to use a cutomized dialog box non-blocking.
You can use for example: jquery UI dialog
Even this has modal option, this is not UI blocking.

this gives a loop without the "only once". jQuery is loaded if this helps.

Finally, I got a solution for reloading page once after two months research.
It works fine on my clientside JS project.
I wrote a function that below reloading page only once.
1) First getting browser domloading time
2) Get current timestamp
3) Browser domloading time + 10 seconds
4) If Browser domloading time + 10 seconds bigger than current now timestamp then page is able to be refreshed via "reloadPage();"
But if it's not bigger than 10 seconds that means page is just reloaded thus It will not be reloaded repeatedly.
5) Therefore if you call "reloadPage();" function in somewhere in your js file page will only be reloaded once.

the value "mc" can be set to whatever you want, but both must match in the 2 lines. and the "=mobile" can be "=anythingyouwant" it just needs a value to stop the refresh.

You can make one verable once = false then reload your page with if else like if once == false reload page an make once true.
You'd need to use either GET or POST information. GET would be simplest. Your JS would check the URL, if a certain param wasn't found, it wouldn't just refresh the page, but rather send the user to a "different" url, which would be the same URL but with the GET parameter in it.
For example:
http://example.com -->will refresh
http://example.com?refresh=no -->won't refresh
If you don't want the messy URL, then I'd include some PHP right at the beginning of the body that echos a hidden value that essentitally says whether the necessary POST param for not refreshing the page was included in the initial page request. Right after that, you'd include some JS to check that value and refresh the page WITH that POST information if necessary.

I would consider activity to be whether or not the user is focused on the window. For example, when you click from one window to another (e.g. Google Chrome to iTunes, or Tab 1 to Tab 2 within an internet browser), the webpage can send a callback saying "Im out of focus!" or "Im in focus!". One could use jQuery to harness this possible lack of activity to do whatever they wanted. If I were in your position, I would use the following code to check for focus every 5 seconds, etc and reload if no focus.

We will need to listen to the beforeunload event in the browser to clear our lastinteraction record so we don't get stuck in an infinite reload loop.

The user activity events we will need to monitor would be mousemove and keypress. We store the last interaction time when the user moves the mouse or presses a key on the keyboard

To set up our final listener, we will use the load event.
On page load, we use the setInterval function to check if the page has expired after a certain period.

This will reload the page as soon as the user moves their mouse, hits a key or touches a touchscreen if it has been inactive for 1 hour. Also, this takes care of the focus as well, so if a user is moving their mouse in a different program and then come back to this window it will reload, which is good because the point is to not have old data being shown.
Many of these other answers either don't answer the main part of the question "with no activity", or they are incredibly, unnecessarily complex. I have taken the accepted answer (here: https://stackoverflow.com/a/4644315/9008140 )
and modified it to take advantage of the fact you can assign timers to variables. This allows us to get rid of the second timer, as well as the timestamp.

This sample code will refresh based on a passed in parameter in minutes, with an accuracy as great as a javascript timer can be. In testing, always less than a second. I created this as a function but you can pull it into your page if you wish.
This task is very easy use following code in html header section
<head> <meta http-equiv="refresh" content="30" /> </head>
It will refresh your page after 30 seconds.
I have a function that updates a <div /> via AJAX:

What I need is that this is not executed when the user is not present on the website, so if there is no movement of the mouse (we will suppose that if move it is in the website) it will not update .mousemove(). By the way, there is any other thing that we can do to know is someone is active on the website?
How can this be done? Thank you in advance!
Edit: probably I explained bad. I need to know the way to only update when there is activity. Like Facebook does with his news feed, the front page. Thanks!
You could use a mousemove handler to track when the user last moved, and then have the process only happen if they last moved the mouse within X seconds. But of course, if the user is sitting there reading something, or if they're a keyboard-oriented kind of person, that will tend to miss that they are there... So you'd probably want to look at keydown as well.
Here's a mousemove example:

Off-topic, but you have an error in your update code. You have:
setTimeout(update(), 3000);
...which will call update immediately and then try to use its return value to schedule something to happen in three seconds. If you want the call to update to be scheduled to happen in three seconds, leave off the () after it:
setTimeout(update, 3000);
I think I might have ended up with something such as this. Avoids date arithmetic. Only cares whether there's been some activity since the last update().
