I'm trying to combine Node/Express and serve React files but its not working as desired.
server.js (my own REST API)

var public = __dirname + "/../frontend/build";

});
app.get('/api/g', (req, res) => {
res.send("Test")

My React build is in the public variable location.
Now when I go to localhost:3001 where my node server runs, I get this page

but the issue is when I go to localhost:3001/api/g I still get the same page. Meaning, I dont get my "res.send" part, I have no idea why this is happening. Can anyone familiar with Node/Express help me out?

I'm setting up express server with create-react-app.
AT console I'm getting
Uncaught SyntaxError: Unexpected token < bundle.js:1
When I click on error it shows me homepage html.
While using morgan logger its giving me 200 ok.
GET /static/js/bundle.js 304 1.145 ms - -
Also when i view source click on css link it shows me css while click on javascript link it shows me blank page(homepage html).

You are trying to fetch /static/js/bundle.js, but there is no bundle.js in static/js.
I think you are trying to use index.html that tries to bundle.js while your webpack config builds main.[hash].js
Introduction
I have built some back end functionality in Node (First time using Node). Problem is that the whole thing was built in one page (index.js) so now im following a few basic tutorials and setting out express router middleware and now trying to follow a modular MVC approach,
This code is simple but brakes when I separate into two pages Server.js and config.js. I know its a simple problem but i cant spot it. can someone help spot the problem and maybe improve the structure ?
Problem
I go to http://localhost:8080/about or a different route and I get
Cannot GET /about
rather than the correct print out.

As #SLaks said in his comment, you need to import (require) your backend/config.js file. But it's not as simple as that...
In node, variables are scoped to the file in which they appear, so if you simply add require('./config') to your server.js file, that's not going to work either, because the router variable in config.js is local to that file - it's not going to know about the router variable in server.js.
The solution to this is to have the config.js file export a function which the server.js file can use to configure stuff. For example
config.js

// set up your router here with router.use, etc.

server.js
var configure = require('./config');
// after you set up your express router...
configure(router);
// now start listening
I am trying to get Cheerio to work with Express.
I'd like to be able to manipulate the dom from the server, but all I have found is web scraping..

At the moment, I am able to run multiple app.listen(port); statements, and use multiple servers.
I'm trying to append <script>alert("test);</script> to every single page sent by express.
I've created the express server: (Assuming Path is a predefined variable)

Here's a quick/simple example with no error handling:

I just tested that locally and it worked as expected. Be sure to test err inside the readFile callback in your real implementation and handle things appropriately if the file isn't found or there's an error reading it.
I was having trouble settings up a very basic static file sever using express with Node.js. I set up a simple server.js but cannot see any files when I load the URL localhost:9000 in my web browser.
All I see is a page saying: Cannot get /

Simply you're exposing nothing. Do you have, for example, an index.html file? Try this:

res.sendfile("index.html");

Express does not create a directory listing. Even thought it does not list the files in the directory, it does serve them up when hitting them in the web browser.
Point the browser to the actual file:
http://localhost:9000/public/test.html
Originally I found this confusing because I had expected the express server to list directories; when seeing "something"... a page that said "Cannot get /" I assumed that page would normally have a list of files.
I'm making some frontend experiments and I'd like to have a very basic webserver to quickly start a project and serve the files (one index.html file + some css/js/img files). So I'm trying to make something with node.js and express, I played with both already, but I don't want to use a render engine this time since I'll have only a single static file, with this code I get the html file but not the assets (error 404):

I came across this because I have a similar situation. I don't need or like templates. Anything you put in the public/ directory under express gets served as static content (Just like Apache). So I placed my index.html there and used sendfile to handle requests with no file (eg: GET http://mysite/):
app.get('/', function(req,res) {
res.sendfile('public/index.html');
});
Following code worked for me.

You could use a solution like this in node.js (link no longer works), as I've blogged about before.
The summarise, install connect with npm install connect.
Then paste this code into a file called server.js in the same folder as your HTML/CSS/JS files.

Now navigate to that folder in your terminal and run node server.js, this will give you a temporary web server at http://localhost:1337
Thank you to original posters, but their answers are a bit outdated now. It's very, very simple to do. A basic setup looks like this:

If you need to serve other static assets from within a folder, you can add something like this before you start defining the routes:
app.use(express.static('public'))
Let's say you have a js folder inside public like: public/js. You could include any of those files inside of your html files using relative paths. For example, let's say /contact needs a contact.js file. In your contact.html file, you can include the script as easy as:
<script src="./js/contact.js"></script>
Building off of that example, you can do the same with css, images etc.
<img src="./images/rofl-waffle.png" />
<link rel="stylesheet" href="./css/o-rly-owl.css" />
