Scroll both columns as one - javascript

My app has two columns, left side being a textarea, while the right side is the result calculated from the text area. But my result column would overflow the fixed window, while textarea would scroll by default.
So I've tried to set both the whole row and its parent to overflow: auto, which let me scroll when I've got enough input, but at the expense of having my separator not full height as well as having a delay after I've wrote into my textarea, before the dix snaps into a bigger height...
My final solution was to use JS & Jquery to check when content is overflown, to alternate between height: auto when it is and height: 100% when its not. That also kinda worked, but with wonky delays yet again...

The simplest way for you to get that effect would be to add that vertical border as a pseudo element on the parent. When I say simple, I mean it would be easy to set it and forget it. CSS would deal with it and it would be independant of the size

I think your best option will be to calculate the height of your text area in javascript and set the css style to it.
Then, Make sure you have the following css:

I've tried it in Chrome's developer tools and it works well.

Printing a multi-page HTML table with a non-overlapping footer on each page

I've searched tirelessly and although I've found many people asking about this problem, there don't seem to be any consistent solutions.
We have a page on which a user can enter a date range, then press submit to return a table of data. A "print" button exists which obviously prints the generated data.
All browsers seem to be able to split the long table into several pages, as expected. We can also get some predefined footer text to show up on each page by using a footer div with some CSS like this:

The only problem is that the table rows have inconsistent heights, so on some pages there's plenty of room for the footer, but on other pages the table and the footer overlap.
Things I have tried:

Adds a margin, but the bottom: 0; fixed position of the footer is now considered to be too high up, i.e. there's still an overlap but with a bunch of space at the bottom of the page. Setting the bottom property to a negative value just makes it appear at the top of the next page instead.

}
No noticeable effect at all.
...And that's pretty much all I can think of. What can we do about this? Do we need some kind of custom JS solution to calculate the number of rows on each page and insert a footer manually? There must be somebody who has had success with printing footers; it doesn't seem like an uncommon requirement.
Please try to add this at the bottom of css file or after the last body affecting rule eventually adding also !important:

There may be a more elegant solution, but you can do this in JS with an algorithm along the lines of:
while there is still vertical room left...
output a row to DOM
measure height of new row and recalc how much vertical room is left
For getting the height of an element, you could take a look at this other answer.
That may seem like a pain, but you'll have a lot of control over your rendering, and it should work fine.

ps: don't add relative position to the table never because it wouldn't work properly.

Listen to scroll event from overflow:hidden elements

I'm trying to synchronize the scrolling between two separate panels / divs.
One element has overflow: auto while the other has overflow: hidden (sort of trying to replicate a grid with frozen columns).
I can sync the scroll when the event happens within the element with overflow: auto but not the one with overflow: hidden (which is sort of normal if you ask me).
However, is there a workaround for this? I want to synchronize the scrolling both ways.

Also, this thing seems to happen here already: http://demos.telerik.com/kendo-ui/grid/frozen-columns but I just can't understand how they're doing it.
Maybe you should make use of the wheel event which is triggered when you roll the mouse wheel, regardless of whether the section of the view has scrolled or not.

I've removed the position: absolute and overflow properties from the panels and added float: left to make them inline (could also use display: inline-block), and added height: 400px, width: 417px and overflow: auto to the container.
The container's width is set to 417px instead of 400px because the scroll bar takes 17 pixels of space (across all browsers according to here).
Works beautifully. Is this what you want?

Hiding an element with hide() causes a page "jump"

I'm trying to create an effect where I display a big logo on page load. When the user scrolls pass the logo and navigation, I want to display a fixed nav bar with a smaller logo. I then want to hide the big logo so that when the user scrolls to the top they still see the fixed nav bar (i.e. the big logo and original navigation stay hidden).
However, when I remove a big block element with the .hide() property it causes the page to "jump" as the display:none property gets set. This reduces the usability of the page, as the location jumps the size of the element that was removed, potentially confusing users.
Is there a way I can get the effect I want, while still providing a smooth experience to the user? I've been thinking of potential options, but have been drawing blanks. Hoping you guys can inspire me :)

You can try this ,
Add a new style

Instead of

Use visibility:hidden then

Maybe it is because a different browser - margin/padding thing. Have you tried to add this to the body element (or to the container element if it inherits some margins/paddings)

Content jumps horizontally whenever browser adds a scrollbar

I'm using a fixed width body and auto margins to center my content in the middle of the page. When the content exceeds the page's height and the browser adds a scrollbar, the auto margins force the content to jump half the width of the scrollbar left.
Is comparing outerHeight with window.innerHeight an appropriate way of solving this? Is there another way to solve this?
I think this should be enough info for the problem, but let me know if I can answer anything else.
Edit for clarification: I don't want to force the scrollbar to appear.

What he does is add this css:

This will move the content to the left just the size of the scrollbar, so when it appears the content is already moved. This works for centered content with overflow: auto; applied to the html tag. The media query disables this for mobile phones, as its very obvious the difference in margin widths.

I've run into this problem myself and I've found two ways to solve it:
Always force the scrollbar to be present:
body { overflow-y: scroll; } Setting it on the html doesn't work in all browsers or might give double scroll bars if the scrollbar does appear.
Add a class that adds ~30 pixels to the right margin of your page if there is no scrollbar.
I've chosen option 1 but I'm not sure if it works in all browsers (especially the older ones).
Facebook uses option 2.
Use this CSS:

For me, the solution was to add this rule to the body:

}
This rule was added recently, and aims to reduce the variability of browsers having different default assumptions about how they should react to overflowing. Chrome, for example, has overflow anchoring enabled by default, whereas Firefox does not. Setting this property will force both browsers to behave the same way.

Dynamic Background Scrolling

Here's a link to what I'll be referring to.
I'm having some trouble getting the background image to work the way I'd like it to.
I want the background to auto resize based on the width of the window, which it is already doing correctly. If you make your window smaller you'll see the background shrink with it.
Here's the issue. If you make your window wide (short) then the background will resize and go too high so you can't see the top of the background anymore (since the background is bottom positioned).
I want the background to be top position when you are at the top of the page, and as you scroll down it will slowly move to be bottom positioned. Sort of like the effect of an Android phone's background when you move left and right. Of course, keep in mind that I still want the background to auto-resize when you make the window smaller.

I hope you don't mind me taking the liberty to use percentages to make my life a little bit easier and possibly the script slightly more robust since I can reliably use floats with percentages.
What I did is make the layout, html and css comply with the rules you need for the bg to be animated properly, they stayed largely the same from what you had.
Then it was just a question of figuring out the calculations needed with the right properties to figure out the percentage you were from the top, the *20 is actually the amount of space 'left' to fill by the background image in percentages (as the background height is 80%).
They I moved the calculations to a function so I could call that on scroll and on window resize, making sure it's initiated on any event that modifies the window somehow...
Didn't do extensive testing but it worked in Chrome and I'm tired :p

Reading the question again checking if I did it right I noticed I didn't quite do what you want, so I updated the link in the first edit which gives you a plugin in which you can have several options for the scrolling background. It retains my 'old' interpetation while also doing what you want... Read comments in code for some extra descriptions.

As I went to work today I was bothered with the fact that my plugin 'try' was a little bloated. And as you mentioned in the comment it didn't quite fit the requirements.
So I rewrote it to only do what you want and not much more, tested in Chrome Firefox, IE9 +compat etc etc.. This script is a lot cleaner.

You can chose to make the background stick to the top or bottom if the height fits in the window. Nothing else, but that is already more than enough to do some pretty cool stuff :p

Explanation of CSS revisions:
margin-top:45px at the background is unnecessary, since you're absolutely positioning the element.

Explanation of the JavaScript code
The size of the background is determined by calculating the ratio of the background and document width. The width property is used, because it's the most reliable method for the calculation.
Then, the height of the viewport, document body and background is calculated. If applicable, the scrolling offset is also calculated, to prepare the movement of the background, if necessary.
Optionally, the code determines whether it's necessary to adjust the left margin (to keep the background visible at a narrow window).
Finally, if the background arrow has a greater height than the document's body, the background is moved accordingly, taking the scrolling position into account. The arrow starts at the top of the document, and will move up as the user scrolls (so that the bottom side of the arrow will be the bottom of the page when the user has fully scrolled down). If it's unnecessary to move the background, because it already suits well, the background will be positioned at the bottom of the page.
When the page has finished loading, this functionality is added to the Resize and scroll events, so that the background is always at the right location.

well, I'm not sure if I understand you and why do you want to do that, but you can try adding 2 backgrounds (see http://www.css3.info/preview/multiple-backgrounds/ ), one with the top bg and another with the bottom bg but I think that if the page is not too long it will cause issues, so the other answer with pure CSS is as follows: first add 3 horizontal divs with 100% width. Top div will have your top bg and its height, middle div will be transparent and auto height and bottom div will have your bottom bg and its height. All divs will have a 0 z-index. Then create a higher z-index div to act as a container and you'll be set. If I understand your question right, that's the close I can think of to achieve that. This being said, I'm pretty sure you can do this with JQuery with way better results
