Extending Promise to support Progress reporting - javascript

So I wanted to extend Promise to have a 'progress' part so that i can report progrss with it while using Promise for my Async tasks.
Thus I extended Promise like this:

What am i doing wrong here?
I was using node 7.5, updated to 8.4. Got that error in both versions.

there are a couple of issues to look out for here.
firstly, the "this" keyword is undefined until the super function is called. therefore you could change the constructor to something like below, using a function to reference an instantiated variable to sel
constructor(fn) {

secondly, keep in mind you are extending the promise type, so when you are calling the "then" function on it, it will return a new promise object, not your new promise type, so the progress function is undefined there. a way to avoid this is to return "this" in the progress function, and in the usage to use the progress function before then, as below
progress(fn) {
this.progressCB = fn;
return this;
}
and for the usage
ptest().progress((p) => {
console.log('progress: ' + p)
}).then((r) => {
console.log('finiished: ' + r)
})
but now you will lose the benefit of the promise and won't be able to chain more promises with progress (still, depends on your use case).
As a suggestion for a different approach, have you tried using Observables?

I need to understand how to make a promise for a function that returns nothing, like setTimeout.
Suppose I have:

Here in 2017, Promises are built into JavaScript, they were added by the ES2015 spec (polyfills are available for outdated environments like IE8-IE11). The syntax they went with uses a callback you pass into the Promise constructor (the Promise executor) which receives the functions for resolving/rejecting the promise as arguments.
First, since async now has a meaning in JavaScript (even though it's only a keyword in certain contexts), I'm going to use later as the name of the function to avoid confusion.
Basic Delay
Using native promises (or a faithful polyfill) it would look like this:
function later(delay) {
return new Promise(function(resolve) {
setTimeout(resolve, delay);
});
}
Note that that assumes a version of setTimeout that's compliant with the definition for browsers where setTimeout doesn't pass any arguments to the callback unless you give them after the interval (this may not be true in non-browser environments, and didn't used to be true on Firefox, but is now; it's true on Chrome and even back on IE8).
Basic Delay with Value
If you want your function to optionally pass a resolution value, on any vaguely-modern browser that allows you to give extra arguments to setTimeout after the delay and then passes those to the callback when called, you can do this (current Firefox and Chrome; IE11+, presumably Edge; not IE8 or IE9, no idea about IE10):

Recursive promise not resolving

I have a function that fetches some data. If data is not available (it becomes available after some short time), it returns null. I created a function, that returns promise, which is wrapped around logic that fetches data and checks if it is is available - if not, it calls itself:

Your return this.fetchDataWrapper() is returning from the timer callback, no fetchDataWrapper. fetchDataWrapper has already returned. Instead, pass that promise into resolve:

Side note: It would probably make sense to reject after X attempts, perhaps:

How to make a promise from setTimeout

This is not a realworld problem, I'm just trying to understand how promises are created.
I need to understand how to make a promise for a function that returns nothing, like setTimeout.
Suppose I have:

How do I create a promise that async can return after the setTimeout is ready to callback()?

Update (2017)
Here in 2017, Promises are built into JavaScript, they were added by the ES2015 spec (polyfills are available for outdated environments like IE8-IE11). The syntax they went with uses a callback you pass into the Promise constructor (the Promise executor) which receives the functions for resolving/rejecting the promise as arguments.
First, since async now has a meaning in JavaScript (even though it's only a keyword in certain contexts), I'm going to use later as the name of the function to avoid confusion.
Basic Delay
Using native promises (or a faithful polyfill) it would look like this:

Note that that assumes a version of setTimeout that's compliant with the definition for browsers where setTimeout doesn't pass any arguments to the callback unless you give them after the interval (this may not be true in non-browser environments, and didn't used to be true on Firefox, but is now; it's true on Chrome and even back on IE8).
Basic Delay with Value
If you want your function to optionally pass a resolution value, on any vaguely-modern browser that allows you to give extra arguments to setTimeout after the delay and then passes those to the callback when called, you can do this (current Firefox and Chrome; IE11+, presumably Edge; not IE8 or IE9, no idea about IE10):

If you want to make it possible to cancel the timeout, you can't just return a promise from later, because promises can't be cancelled.

Usually you'll have a promise library (one you write yourself, or one of the several out there). That library will usually have an object that you can create and later "resolve," and that object will have a "promise" you can get from it.
Then later would tend to look something like this:
