How to use $.ajax to receive JSON from API - javascript

I'm trying to make a random quote machine, so I started out with this HTML to define the elements:
<div id="quoteDisplay">
<h1 id="quote">Quote</h1>
<h2 id="author">- Author</h2>
<button id="new">New Quote</button>
</div>
$('#new').on('click', function(e) {
e.preventDefault();
$.ajax({
url: 'http://quotesondesign.com/wp-json/posts?filter[orderby]=rand&filter[posts_per_page]=1',
success: function(data) {
var post = data.shift();
$('#author').html(post.title);
$('#quote').html(post.content);
}
})
});
However for some reason when I click on the button, nothing happens and I don't understand where the problem is. I'm fully open to other methods of doing this.

The reason that the request isn't returning on jsFiddles, is due to the fact that the url entered results in a 'Mixed Content' error. (I.e., requesting a 'HTTP' source on a 'HTTPS' page.)
I think the reason that your code isn't working, is due to the fact that you haven't assigned the 'Document Ready' syntax to your jQuery file (If that is the full code for your JS file). As your code works as can be seen here.
This can be achieved through the shorthand syntax of
$(function() {
//YOUR CODE HERE
}
Or
$(document).ready(function(){
});

You're using $.ajax and one of the options of this method, is the method, which isn't specified.
To understand more about request methods, look at the jQuery docs: http://api.jquery.com/jquery.ajax/
The following code will work.
$.get({
url: 'http://quotesondesign.com/wp-json/posts?filter[orderby]=rand&filter[posts_per_page]=1',
success: function(data) {
/* process response */
}
})
There is a working example here: http://jsfiddle.net/1chjtL6h/2/

error with split: split is not a function

I have this javascript code that performs an ajax request on button click.
$('#allinea').click(function(e){
e.preventDefault();
var password = $('#password').val();
$.ajax({
type: "POST",
url: "db_align.php",
data: {password:password},
complete: function(data){
data1=data.split("|");
if(data1[0]=="Successo"){
$("#per_all").fadeTo(200,0.1,
function(){
$(this).find('img').attr("src",'../images/ok.png');
$(this).find('.right').html(data1[1]).promise().done(function(){
$(this).fadeTo(900,1);
});
});
}else if(data1[0]=="Errore"){
$("#per_all").fadeTo(200,0.1,
function(){
$(this).find('img').attr("src",'../images/alert.png');
$(this).find('.right').html(data1[1]).promise().done(function(){
$(this).fadeTo(900,1);
});
});
}
}
}); //chiudo $.ajax
});
The php page returns "Successo|Allineamento riuscito" and I see it correctly in firebug but the js returns an error:
Type error: data.split is not a function
data1=data.split("|");
I use this code everywhere in my app without any inconvenient. What am I doing wrong this time?
For what I see btw this is not an array so this should work without any inconvenient!
jQuery will return a jqXHR here, which means that instead of accessing data directly, you will probably need to do data.responseText.
Exo's answer is perfect. It will allow you to edit the raw text.
If you know the type of data returning, you can (must) set it explicitly. jQuery will then programmatically convert data for you in the correct format.
dataType: json for JSON,
dataType: text for plain text
More can be found in the documentation.
You should update your complete method to done for success condition and fail for when the request fails.
complete is deprecated as of version 1.8, it's replaced with always, which returns a data or jqXHR object. When success complete will return a data object according to the functionality of done.

Ajax Call Confusion

before we start apologies for the wording and lack of understanding - I am completely new to this.
I am hoping to run a php script using Ajax - I don't need to send any data to the php script, I simply need it to run on button press, after the script is run I need to refresh the body of the page. What I have so far:
HMTL Button with on click:
<font color = "white">Next Question</font>
JS Ajax call:
function AjaxCall() {
$.ajax({
url:'increment.php',
type: 'php',
success:function(content,code)
{
alert(code);
$('body').html(content);
}
});
}
this runs the php script but doesn't stay on the current page or refresh the body - has anyone got any ideas - apologies if this is completely wrong I'm learning - slowly.
Many thanks in advance.
**As a small edit - I don't want a user to navigate away from the page during the process
How about using load instead of the typical ajax function?
function AjaxCall() {
$(body).load('increment.php');
}
Additionally, if you were to use the ajax function, php is not a valid type. The type option specifies whether you are using GET or POST to post the request.
As far as the dataType option (which is what I think you mean), The Ajax doesn't care what technology the called process is using (like ASP or PHP), it only care about the format of the returned data, so appropriate types are html, json, etc...
Read More: http://api.jquery.com/jquery.ajax/
Furthermore, if you are replacing the entire body content, why don't you just refresh the page?
your ajax should be
function AjaxCall() {
$.ajax({
url:'increment.php',
type: 'post',
success:function(data)
{
console.log(data);
$('body').html(data);
}
});
}
if you want to learn ajax then you should refer this link
and if you just want to load that page then you can use .load() method as "Dutchie432" described.
If you are going to fire a javascript event in this way there are two ways to go about it and keep it from actually trying to follow the link:
<font color = "white">Next Question</font>
Note the return false;. This stops the following of the link. The other method would be:
<font color = "white">Next Question</font>
Note how this actually modifies the href to be a javascript call.
You can study about js and ajax here http://www.w3schools.com/ajax/default.asp will help a lot. Of course all js functions if called from internal js script should be inside <script></script> and if called from external you call the js gile like <script src"somejs.js"></script> and inside js there is no need for <script> tags again. Now all those function do not work by simply declaring them. So this:
function sayHello(){
alert("Happy coding");
}
doesn't work because it is just declared and not called into action. So in jQuery that you use after we declare some functions as the sayHello above we use:
jQuery(document).ready(function($){
sayHello();
});
Doing this we say that when everything is fully loaded so our DOM has its final shape then let the games begin, make some DOM manipulations etc
Above also you don't specify the type of your call meaning POST or GET. Those verbs are the alpha and omega of http requests. Typically we use GET to bring data like in your case here and POST to send some data for storage to the server. A very common GET request is this:
$.ajax({
type : 'GET',
url : someURL,
data : mydata, //optional if you want to send sth to the server like a user's id and get only that specific user's info
success : function(data) {
console.log("Ajax rocks");
},
error: function(){
console.log("Ajax failed");
}
});
Try this;
<script type="text/javascript">
function AjaxCall() {
window.location.reload();
}
</script>
<body>
<font color = "white">Next Question</font>
</body>

How to get Twitter search results in Javascript

I would like to grab a list of the recent appearances of a hashtag, but this seems to be impossible to do in Javascript at the moment. I have seen a lot of code snippets around that read like:
function searchTwitter(query) {
$.ajax({
url: 'http://search.twitter.com/search.json?' + searchTerm,
dataType: 'jsonp',
success: function (data) {
//some code
}
});
}
However, this does not seem to work anymore. If I try to use it, I get an error in the console like so:
XMLHttpRequest cannot load http://search.twitter.com/search.json?q=%23twitter. Origin http://myserver.com is not allowed by Access-Control-Allow-Origin.
The same thing happens if I use $.getJson(). Is there a solution for this? A workaround? It seems as though they changed something and then suddenly no one's client-side code works anymore. I really would like to be able to grab the data using Ajax so I can update my page without having to reload the whole thing.
If I am missing something obvious, please let me know.
You can solve this by configurin apache to
Access-Control-Allow-Origin *
Or for some reasons which i do not understand it worked using jQuery.getJSON();
function searchTwitter(query) {
$.getJSON({
url: 'http://search.twitter.com/search.json?' + searchTerm,
success: function (data) {
//some code
}
});
}

Jquery .ajax not working as expected

I've got the following code to call a json web service in a separate functions.js file.
function getMajorGroups(){
var element = $(".item-group-button");
$.ajax({
type:"GET",
url:"localhost:6458/posApplication/getAllMajorGroups",
data:"{}",
contentType:"application/json; charset=utf-8",
dataType:"json",
done:successResult(majorGroups),
fail:errorResult(error)
});
}
function successResult(majorGroups){
var mGroups = response.d;
$("#item-groups").empty();
$.each(majorGroups ,function(){
var h3 = $('h3').append(majorGroups.code);
element.append(h3);
$("#item-groups").prepend(element);
});
}
function errorResult(error){
alert("error");
}
When I run the web page and I use firebug to trace the steps I can see the script is executed. But it does not execute the success or failure code inside the ajax call. Am I doing anything wrong here?
Below is an example of the string which the service return.
{"majorGroups":[{"update":"false","hasMore":"false","status":"A","description":"Beverage","majorGroupId":"48","code":"Beverage"},{"update":"false","hasMore":"false","status":"A","description":"Laundry","majorGroupId":"51","code":"Laundry"},{"update":"false","hasMore":"false","status":"A","description":"Cigarette","majorGroupId":"50","code":"Cigarette"},{"update":"false","hasMore":"false","status":"A","description":"Food","majorGroupId":"47","code":"Food"},{"update":"false","hasMore":"false","status":"A","description":"Health Center","majorGroupId":"52","code":"Health Center"}],"failure":"false"}
$.ajax has no property named failoure. error should be used so it looks like error: errorResult
Besides that check that request is made via Network tab in Chrome dev tools or some similar tool. Check what is in the the raw response and make sure that is what you wanted. If request failed you will see way or at least have error code.
If everything is fine so far then make sure your adding DOM elements when DOM is ready so wrap your stuff with $(function(){ /* your stuff here */ })
Edit:
That's not the way done and fail should be used. jQuery ajax call returns promise.
$.ajax({
url : "..."
/* omitted */
}).done(successCallback).fail(failCallback)
where successCallback can be either function name like your defined succes function or just anonymous function like
.done(function(response){
// do stuff with response
}
I think you should carefully read jQuery documentation.
Also your $.each call is kinda broken - you skipped parameter in function provided to $.each

jQuery Ajax HTTP Request INTO a click function - not working

My question is:
Is it possible to do an Ajax request WITHIN a click function, with jQuery? (see example below), If so, what am I doing wrong? Because I'm not being able to do any request (I'm alerting the data through my success function and nothing is being retrieved).
Thank you very much in advance for any help! :)
function tracker(){
this.saveEntry = function(elementTracked, elementTrackedType){
var mode = "save";
var dataPost = "mode="+mode+"&elementTracked="+elementTracked+"&elementTrackedType="+elementTrackedType;
$.ajax({
type: "POST",
url: 'myURL',
data:dataPost,
success:function(msg){
alert(msg);
},
beforeSend:function(msg){
$("#trackingStatistics").html("Loading...");
}
});
return;
},
this.stopLinksSaveAndContinue = function(){
var fileName;
$("a[rel^='presentation']").click(function(e){
fileName = $(this).attr("rel").substring(13);
this.saveEntry(fileName,"Presentation");
})
}
}
If your anchor is linked with the href attribute, then this may be interrupting your AJAX request. A similar problem was recently discussed in the following Stack Overflow post:
window.location change fails AJAX call
If you really want to stick to using AJAX for link tracking, you may want to do the following:
Link
With the following JavaScript logic:
function tracker(url) {
$.ajax({
type: 'POST',
url: 'tracker_service.php',
data: 'some_argument=value',
success: function(msg) {
window.location = url;
}
});
}
Have you considered the possiblity that the request might be failing. If so, you're never going to hit the alert.
Can you confirm that the beforeSend callback is being fired?
Also, I'm assuming 'myURL' isn't that in your real-world source code?
There may also be something awry in the }, that closes your function.
Im guessing some sort of error is being generated. Try adding
error:function(a,b){
alert(a);
},
After 'success'
