Text invisible yet appearing in inspector - javascript

My last question was answered so quickly and smoothly I thought I'd return with another issue I'm failing to figure out on my own.
I used one of the examples to create this graph:
data = [{ "label": "1", "value": 20 },
{ "label": "2", "value": 50 },
{ "label": "3", "value": 30 },
{ "label": "4", "value": 45 }];
var width = 400,
height = 450;
var outerRadius = 200,
innerRadius = outerRadius / 3,
color = d3.scale.category20c();
var pie = d3.layout.pie()
.value(function (d) { return d.value; });
var pieData = pie(data);
var arc = d3.svg.arc()
.innerRadius(innerRadius);
var svg = d3.select("body").append("svg")
.attr("width", width)
.attr("height", height)
.append("g")
.attr("transform", "translate(" + outerRadius + "," + (outerRadius + 50) + ")");
svg.append("text")
.attr("x", 0)
.attr("y", -(outerRadius + 10))
.style("text-anchor", "middle")
.text("Title[enter image description here][1]");
svg.selectAll("path")
.data(pieData)
.enter().append("path")
.each(function (d) { d.outerRadius = outerRadius - 20; })
.attr("d", arc)
.attr("fill", function (d, i) { return color(i); })
.on("mouseover", arcTween(outerRadius, 0))
.on("mouseout", arcTween(outerRadius - 20, 150));
svg.selectAll("path")
.append("text")
.attr("transform", function (d) {
d.innerRadius = 0;
d.outerRadius = outerRadius;
return "translate(" + arc.centroid(d) + ")";
})
.attr("fill", "white")
.attr("text-anchor", "middle")
.text(function (d, i) { return data[i].label; });
function arcTween(outerRadius, delay) {
return function () {
d3.select(this).transition().delay(delay).attrTween("d", function (d) {
var i = d3.interpolate(d.outerRadius, outerRadius);
return function (t) { d.outerRadius = i(t); return arc(d); };
});
};
}
The idea being that when you hover over a section on the pie chart (donut chart?) it expands. However, this made my labels dissapear and I can't manage to make them come back. I either get an error, or they just don't show up on the screen (even though I see the tag in the inspector). Any obvious thing I'm missing?
Thanks!

You cannot append a <text> element to a <path> element. It simply doesn't work in an SVG. Even not working, the <text> element will be appended.
That being said, a solution is creating a new "enter" selection for the texts:
svg.selectAll(null)
.data(pieData)
.enter()
.append("text")
.attr("transform", function(d) {
d.innerRadius = 0;
d.outerRadius = outerRadius;
return "translate(" + arc.centroid(d) + ")";
})
.attr("fill", "white")
.attr("text-anchor", "middle")
.text(function(d, i) {
return data[i].label;
});
Here is your updated code:
data = [{
"label": "1",
"value": 20
}, {
"label": "2",
"value": 50
}, {
"label": "3",
"value": 30
}, {
"label": "4",
"value": 45
}];
var width = 400,
height = 450;
var outerRadius = 200,
innerRadius = outerRadius / 3,
color = d3.scale.category20c();
var pie = d3.layout.pie()
.value(function(d) {
return d.value;
});
var pieData = pie(data);
var arc = d3.svg.arc()
.innerRadius(innerRadius);
var svg = d3.select("body").append("svg")
.attr("width", width)
.attr("height", height)
.append("g")
.attr("transform", "translate(" + outerRadius + "," + (outerRadius + 50) + ")");
svg.append("text")
.attr("x", 0)
.attr("y", -(outerRadius + 10))
.style("text-anchor", "middle")
.text("Title[enter image description here][1]");
svg.selectAll("path")
.data(pieData)
.enter().append("path")
.each(function(d) {
d.outerRadius = outerRadius - 20;
})
.attr("d", arc)
.attr("fill", function(d, i) {
return color(i);
})
.on("mouseover", arcTween(outerRadius, 0))
.on("mouseout", arcTween(outerRadius - 20, 150));
svg.selectAll(null)
.data(pieData)
.enter()
.append("text")
.attr("transform", function(d) {
d.innerRadius = 0;
d.outerRadius = outerRadius;
return "translate(" + arc.centroid(d) + ")";
})
.attr("fill", "white")
.attr("text-anchor", "middle")
.text(function(d, i) {
return data[i].label;
});
function arcTween(outerRadius, delay) {
return function() {
d3.select(this).transition().delay(delay).attrTween("d", function(d) {
var i = d3.interpolate(d.outerRadius, outerRadius);
return function(t) {

changing color of d3.js pie chart label when hovering over slice?

I'm currently changing the color of the slice directly on hover using css, but I'd like to affect the color of the label instead. I'm having trouble figuring out how to do this using the d3 syntax, any tips would be appreciated.
Thanks!
var arcs = vis.selectAll("g.slice")
.data(pie)
.enter()
.append("svg:g")
.attr("class", "slice")
;
arcs.append("svg:path")
.attr("fill", function(d){
console.log(d.data.label, " ", (d.endAngle - d.startAngle))
if(d.endAngle - d.startAngle > .24){
return "#00C189"
} else {
return "#E3594B"
}
})
.attr("d", arc)
.on('click', function(d){ getRSS(d.data.label); })
.on('mouseover', function(d) {
// CHANGE LABEL COLOR HERE
})
.on('mouseout', function(d){
// CHANGE LABEL COLOR BACK HERE
});
arcs.filter(function(d) { return d.endAngle - d.startAngle > .2; }).append("svg:text")
.attr("dy", ".35em")
.attr("text-anchor", "middle")
.attr("transform", function(d) { //set the label's origin to the center of the arc
d.outerRadius = outerRadius; // Set Outer Coordinate
d.innerRadius = outerRadius*.3; // Set Inner Coordinate
return "translate(" + arc.centroid(d) + ")rotate(" + angle(d) + ")";
})
.style("fill", "White")
.text(function(d) { return d.data.label; })
;
Try this code:
arcs.on("mouseover", function() {
d3.select(this)
.select("text")
.style("fill", "green");
}).on("mouseout", function() {
d3.select(this)
.select("text")
.style("fill", "black");
});

Stacked Bar Chart to Grouped Bar Chart transition not working

I have a stacked bar chart to Grouped bar chart function with transition that works fine with one chart, but as soon as I add a second it breaks. The first chart will not transition and the second chart works fine. I think this has something to do with the transition being in a function so it only runs for the last chart made.
Any help on this would be great!?
I put together a jsFiddle for this here
My function is as follows:
function createChartDate(inputdata, chartname, inputtop, inputbottom, inputwidth, inputheight, inputleft, inputright, bargap, yaxisShift) {
var stack = d3.layout.stack(),
layers = inputdata,
m = layers[0].length, // number of samples per layer
n = layers.length, // number of layers
data = stack(d3.range(n).map(function(d) {
return layers[d];
}));
var yGroupMax = d3.max(data, function(layer) {
return d3.max(layer, function(d) {
return d.y;
});
}),
yStackMax = d3.max(data, function(layer) {
return d3.max(layer, function(d) {
return d.y0 + d.y;
});
});
var margin = {
top: inputtop,
right: inputright,
bottom: inputbottom,
left: inputleft
},
width = inputwidth - margin.left - margin.right,
height = inputheight - margin.top - margin.bottom;
var x = d3.scale.ordinal()
.domain(d3.range(m))
.rangeRoundBands([0, width], (Number(bargap)/100));
var xTime = d3.time.scale()
.domain([new Date(inputdata[0][0].x), d3.time.day.offset(new Date(inputdata[0][inputdata[0].length - 1].x), 1)])
.rangeRound([0, width - margin.left - margin.right]);
var xAxisTime = d3.svg.axis()
.scale(xTime)
.orient('bottom')
.ticks(d3.time.day, 1)
.tickFormat(d3.time.format('%x'))
.tickSize(0)
.tickPadding(8);
var y = d3.scale.linear()

As I said in my comment:
Since your createChartDate function wraps multiple variables (and
other functions), your charts aren't independent of each other. Only
the last one transitions because var allchart =
d3.select(chartname)..., chartname holds the value "#chart2"
Lots of ways to fix this but a quick refactor would be to have your createChartDate return the transition functions (in an object), so you can call them later (and you create a closure).

D3.js Day Hour Heatmap dynamic update

I'm very new to D3.js and I'm trying to learn how to put things together correctly. I have a day/hour heatmap based on this example here: http://bl.ocks.org/tjdecke/5558084
I'm trying to write an updateHeatMap method so that I can dynamically update the heatmap with new data. I've been researching and researching, and I honestly haven't found a successful solution. Any help would be appreciated, code snippets below
I have changed the original day/hour heatmap example slightly to look like this:
$scope.heatMapData = $http.get(...
$scope.initHeatMap = function() {
var margin = { top: 50, right: 0, bottom: 100, left: 30 },
width = 960 - margin.left - margin.right,
height = 430 - margin.top - margin.bottom,
gridSize = Math.floor(width / 24),
legendElementWidth = gridSize*2,
buckets = 9,
colors = ["#ffffd9","#edf8b1","#c7e9b4","#7fcdbb","#41b6c4","#1d91c0","#225ea8","#253494","#081d58"], // alternatively colorbrewer.YlGnBu[9]
days = ["Mo", "Tu", "We", "Th", "Fr", "Sa", "Su"],
times = ["1a", "2a", "3a", "4a", "5a", "6a", "7a", "8a", "9a", "10a", "11a", "12a", "1p", "2p", "3p", "4p", "5p", "6p", "7p", "8p", "9p", "10p", "11p", "12p"];
$scope.colorScale = d3.scale.quantile()
.domain([0, buckets - 1, d3.max($scope.heatMapData, function (d) { return d.value; })])
.range(colors);
var svg = d3.select("#chart").append("svg")
.attr("width", width + margin.left + margin.right)
.attr("height", height + margin.top + margin.bottom)
.append("g")
.attr("transform", "translate(" + margin.left + "," + margin.top + ")");
var dayLabels = svg.selectAll(".dayLabel")
.data(days)
.enter().append("text")
.text(function (d) { return d; })
.attr("x", 0)
.attr("y", function (d, i) { return i * gridSize; })
.style("text-anchor", "end")
.attr("transform", "translate(-6," + gridSize / 1.5 + ")")
.attr("class", function (d, i) { return ((i >= 0 && i <= 4) ? "dayLabel mono axis axis-workweek" : "dayLabel mono axis"); });
var timeLabels = svg.selectAll(".timeLabel")
.data(times)
.enter().append("text")
.text(function(d) { return d; })
.attr("x", function(d, i) { return i * gridSize; })
.attr("y", 0)
.style("text-anchor", "middle")
.attr("transform", "translate(" + gridSize / 2 + ", -6)")
.attr("class", function(d, i) { return ((i >= 7 && i <= 16) ? "timeLabel mono axis axis-worktime" : "timeLabel mono axis"); });
var heatMap = svg.selectAll(".hour")
.data($scope.heatMapData)
.enter().append("rect")
.attr("x", function(d) { return (d.hour - 1) * gridSize; })
.attr("y", function(d) { return (d.day - 1) * gridSize; })
.attr("rx", 4)
.attr("ry", 4)
.attr("class", "hour bordered")
.attr("width", gridSize)
.attr("height", gridSize)
.style("fill", colors[0]);
heatMap.transition().duration(1000)
.style("fill", function(d) { return $scope.colorScale(d.value); });
heatMap.append("title").text(function(d) { return d.value; });
var legend = svg.selectAll(".legend")
.data([0].concat($scope.colorScale.quantiles()), function(d) { return d; })
.enter().append("g")
.attr("class", "legend");
legend.append("rect")
.attr("x", function(d, i) { return legendElementWidth * i; })
.attr("y", height)
.attr("width", legendElementWidth)
.attr("height", gridSize / 2)
.style("fill", function(d, i) { return colors[i]; });
legend.append("text")
.attr("class", "mono")
.text(function(d) { return "≥ " + Math.round(d); })
.attr("x", function(d, i) { return legendElementWidth * i; })
.attr("y", height + gridSize);
};
Here is what I have so far with the update method. This isn't working, because I'm not sure how to get the updated $scope.heatMapData into the new heatMap variable. I also need to update the legend to match the new color scale, but that's second in priority under this.
$scope.rowSelected() = function(){
$http.get(...).then(function(result){
$scope.heatMapData = result.data;
$scope.updateHeatMap();
});
}
$scope.updateHeatMap = function(){
var svg = d3.select("body").transition();
var heatMap = svg.selectAll(".hour")
.duration(250)
.attr("x", function(d) { return (d.hour - 1) * gridSize; })
.attr("y", function(d) { return (d.day - 1) * gridSize; })
.attr("rx", 4)
.attr("ry", 4)
.attr("class", "hour bordered")
.attr("width", gridSize)
.attr("height", gridSize)
.style("fill", colors[0]);
heatMap.transition().duration(1000)
.style("fill", function(d) { return colorScale(d.value); });
}

Setting color of marker-end arrow in D3.js

The code below displays marker-ends on arrows/paths/lines as intended, but the color of the marker-end does not vary by line (i.e., it is always the same orange color, not the color of its respective line). I think the code is defaulting to the color assigned to the first field of my data(?). Any advice would be appreciated.

While you are creating an svg:marker for each line, you give them all the same id. When they are then used on your line elements, since they all have the same id you are only using one of them.
Simple fix, give them unique ids:
svg.selectAll("marker.brand")
.data(brands)
.enter().append("svg:marker")
.attr('id', function(d,i){
return 'end-arrow' + i; //<-- append index postion
})
...
svg.selectAll(".line")
.data(brands)
.enter().append("line")
.attr("class", "square")
.attr('x1', function(d) {
return x(-d.pc1);
})
.attr('y1', function(d) {
return y(-d.pc2);
})
.attr("x2", function(d) {
return x(d.pc1);
})
.attr("y2", function(d) {
return y(d.pc2);
})
.style("stroke", function(d) {
return color(d['brand']);
})
.style('marker-end', function(d,i){
return "url(#end-arrow"+i+")"; //<--use the one with the right id
})
....
Example here.

Legend in D3 circle pack diagram

I need to create a legend for the bubble/circle pack chart. I'm displaying the values inside the circle. I need the names as the legend. For an instance, in the below provided data, if the value is 60, i need that name "Petrol" in the legend. How could i achieve it?
Snippet:
var diameter = 200,
format = d3.format(",d"),
color = ["#7b6888", "#ccc", "#aaa", "#6b486b"];
var bubble = d3.layout.pack().size([diameter, diameter]);
var svg = d3.select("#bubbleCharts").append("svg")
.attr("width", diameter + 10)
.attr("height", diameter)
.attr("class", "bubble");
d3.json("flare.json", function(error, root) {
var node = svg.selectAll(".node")
.data(bubble.nodes(classes(root))
.filter(function(d) { return !d.children; }))
.enter().append("g")
.attr("class", "node")
.attr("transform", function(d) { return "translate(" + d.x + 20 + "," + d.y + ")"; });
node.append("circle").attr("r", function(d) { return d.r+ 7; })
.style("fill", function(d,i) { return color[i];} );
node.append("text").attr("dy", ".3em").style("text-anchor", "middle")
.text(function(d) { return d.value+"%"; });
});
function classes(root) {
var classes = [];
function recurse(name, node) {
if (node.children)
node.children.forEach(function(child){
recurse(node.name, child);
});
else
classes.push({packageName: name, value: node.value});
}
recurse(null, root);
return {children: classes};
}
var legend = d3.select("#bubbleChart").append("svg")
.selectAll("g").data(node.children).enter().append("g")
.attr("class","legend")
.attr("width", radius)
.attr("height", radius * 2)
.attr("transform", function(d, i) {return "translate(" + i *10 + "0" + ")"; });
legend.append("rect").attr("width", 18).attr("height", 10)
.style("fill", function(d, i) { return color[i];});
legend.append("text").attr("x", 24).attr("y", 5).attr("dy", ".35em")
.text(function(d) { return d; });
My data:
{
"name": "Spending Activity",
"children": [
{"name": "Petrol", "value": 10},
{"name": "Travel", "value": 60},
{"name": "Medical", "value": 25},
{"name": "Shopping", "value": 5}
]
}
How would i take the values from json and create a legend? Thanks.
You can simply iterate through your data set and add those values:
legend.selectAll("circle").data(data.children)
.enter()
.append("circle")
.attr("cy", function(d,i) { return (i+1) * 10; })
.attr("r", function(d) { return d.r+ 7; })
.style("fill", function(d,i) {
return color[i];
});
legend.selectAll("text").data(data.children)
.enter()
.append("text")
.attr("transform", function(d,i) {
return "translate(10," + ((i+1) * 10) + ")";
});
