JSON.stringify has a feature to enable objects to define their own serialization by defining a function with the name toJSON.
Here is the excerpt from MDN docs:
toJSON() behavior
If an object being stringified has a property named toJSON whose value
is a function, then the toJSON() method customizes JSON
stringification behavior: instead of the object being serialized, the
value returned by the toJSON() method when called will be serialized.
Is there a way to override it, so that even if there are toJSON methods attached, it ignores them and does the 'normal' serialization?
Reason: There are some toJson methods, having minor bugs, introduced in my environment due to a JS library. And some of those buggy serialized formats have been accepted and server-side is coded to that format.
So, I am stuck not being able to remove the buggy methods, however I would like to hint JSON.stringify to ignore those methods going forward.
You can override the method:

I'm working on an AngularJS SPA and I'm using prototypes in order to add behavior to objects that are incoming through AJAX as JSON. Let's say I just got a timetable x from an AJAX call.
I've defined Timetable.prototype.SomeMethod = function() and I use https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/JavaScript/Reference/Global_Objects/Object/setPrototypeOf in order to set the prototype of x to TimeTable.prototype. I have the polyfill in place too.
If I call x.SomeMethod() this works in IE > 9, FF, Chrome etc. However, IE 9 gives me a headache and says throws an error stating 'x does not have property or member SomeMethod'.
Debugging in IE shows me that the _proto_ of x has SomeMethod() in the list of functions, however, calling x.SomeMethod() gives the same error as described.
How can I make this work in IE9 ?

The main problem with "extending" a random object retrieved from some other environment is that javascript doesn't really allow random property names, e.g. the random object may have a property name that shadows an inherited property. You might consider the following.
Use the random object purely as data and pass it to methods that access the data and do what you want, e.g.
function getName(obj) {
return obj.name;
}
So when calling methods you pass the object to a function that acts on the object and you are free to add and modify properties directly on the object.
Another is to create an instance with the methods you want and copy the object's properties to it, but then you still have the issue of not allowing random property names. But that can be mitigated by using names for inherited properties that are unlikely to clash, e.g. prefixed with _ or __ (which is a bit ugly), or use a naming convention like getSomething, setSomething, calcLength and so on.
So if obj represents data for a person, you might do:

You might even use the data object to create instances from various consructors, e.g. a data object might represent multiple people, or a person and their address, which might create two related objects.

Can anyone tell me the difference between both these ways of representing an object in JSON notation. I am just confused whether these to achieve the same or there is a difference.
From the fine manual:
toJSON behavior
If an object being stringified has a property named toJSON whose value is a function, then the toJSON method customizes JSON stringification behavior: instead of the object being serialized, the value returned by the toJSON method when called will be serialized.
This is why Backbone uses the toJSON method for serialization and given a model instance called m, you can say things like:
var string = JSON.stringify(m);
and get just the attributes out of m rather than a bunch of noise that your server won't care about.
That said, the main difference is that toJSON produces a value (a number, boolean, object, ...) that gets converted to a JSON string whereas JSON.stringify always produces a string.
The default Backbone toJSON is simply this (for models):
return _.clone(this.attributes);
so m.toJSON() gives you a shallow copy of the model's attributes. If there are arrays or objects as attribute values then you will end unexpected reference sharing. Note that Backbone.Model#clone also suffers from this problem.
If you want to safely clone a model's data then you could send it through JSON.stringify and then JSON.parse to get a deep copy:

var cloned_model = new M(data);
where model_instance is your instance of the Backbone model M.
JSON.stringify() - Any valid JSON representation value can be stringified.
The JSON.stringify(..) utility will automatically omit undefined, function, and symbol values when it comes across them. If such a value is found in an array, that value is replaced by null (so that the array position information isn't altered). If found as a property of an object, that property will simply be excluded.
JSON stringification has the special behavior that if an object value has a toJSON() method defined, this method will be called first to get a value to use for serialization.
toJSON() - to a valid JSON value suitable for stringification.
One example, JSON.stringify() an object with circular reference in it, an error will be thrown. toJSON() can fix it as following.

I'm also reading Addy Osmani's Developing backbone.js application, and I have the same question. I figured out by trying his example (the todo list) in the console.

I'm serializing quite complex data-structures using native JSON.stringify of chrome(will switch to some serialization library later for cross-browser support). Most of the data can be looked upon as static, but some is dynamic.
When constructing the data I'd like to be able to do something like
var dynamicString=new String();
{a:"foo", b:dynamicString}
Then set the primitive string-value of dynamicString later on. I'd like to do this rather than changing the property "b" of that object because this would allow for constructing this data a lot easier.
I.e. something like:
I've already found out the primitive value of a String-object can't be changed. I've also found out that the valueOf-function can be set to a custom function, and by returning the desired value in that function this can basically be achieved if doing things like:

a.valueOf=function(){return ("foo")};

The problem is that the serialization apparently doesn't use the valueOf-function. Serializing the dynamicString-object in this case puts "bar" in the string returned by JSON.stringify, rather than "foo" which is desired.
One way of getting what I'm after is recursively looping though all the objects of the data-structure prior to serialization, and replacing dynamicData-objects by the primitive value they return. But I'd like to avoid that if possible.
Any suggestions?
Edit: I could of course also put an object in the data, which I also have a reference to. Then I can set the data of that object "dynamically", which will be reflected in the result-string. But that adds another level in the structure. I just want a string, not an object with a string-property.

Yes. JSON.stringify does call the toJSON method on objects, which in your case still returns the internal value. If you overwrite that, it will work:
a.toJSON = a.valueOf;
console.log(JSON.stringify(a)); // '"foo"'
As said above, using native String objects doesn't make much sense. Instead, we should create an extra constructor for them:

I've been using dean edwards base.js (http://dean.edwards.name/weblog/2006/03/base/) to organise my program into objects ( base.js is amazing btw, if you havent used it before !).Anyway, my question is generic and you don't have to know base.js to know my answer.
I have a property in one of my objects called ref which is a reference to a DOM element, and this object is meant to be saved as JSON using JSON.stringify, but as you can imagine since DOM elements are circular structure, I won't be able to convert the object into JSON.
Now to get around this problem I have a method called html() which is meant to return the ref property, but I need to have ref as a private property which is only accessible from within the object, and hence won't be sent to stringify.
What's the best way to do that?
You probably know that you cannot have private properties in JavaScript.
Interestingly, if you pass an object to JSON.stringify which has a method toJSON, JSON.stringify will automatically call that method to get a JSONable representation of that object. So all you have to do is implement this method.
For example you can create a shallow copy of the object which only contains the properties you want to copy:

I'm trying to figure out what's gone wrong with my json serializing, have the current version of my app with and old one and am finding some surprising differences in the way JSON.stringify() works (Using the JSON library from json.org).
In the old version of my app:
JSON.stringify({"a":[1,2]})
gives me this;
"{\"a\":[1,2]}"
in the new version,
JSON.stringify({"a":[1,2]})
gives me this;
"{\"a\":\"[1, 2]\"}"
any idea what could have changed to make the same library put quotes around the array brackets in the new version?
Since JSON.stringify has been shipping with some browsers lately, I would suggest using it instead of Prototype’s toJSON. You would then check for window.JSON && window.JSON.stringify and only include the json.org library otherwise (via document.createElement('script')…). To resolve the incompatibilities, use:

The function JSON.stringify() defined in ECMAScript 5 and above (Page 201 - the JSON Object, pseudo-code Page 205), uses the function toJSON() when available on objects.
Because Prototype.js (or another library that you are using) defines an Array.prototype.toJSON() function, arrays are first converted to strings using Array.prototype.toJSON() then string quoted by JSON.stringify(), hence the incorrect extra quotes around the arrays.
The solution is therefore straight-forward and trivial (this is a simplified version of Raphael Schweikert's answer):
delete Array.prototype.toJSON
This produces of course side effects on libraries that rely on a toJSON() function property for arrays. But I find this a minor inconvenience considering the incompatibility with ECMAScript 5.
It must be noted that the JSON Object defined in ECMAScript 5 is efficiently implemented in modern browsers and therefore the best solution is to conform to the standard and modify existing libraries.
A possible solution which will not affect other Prototype dependencies would be:

This takes care of the Array toJSON incompatibility with JSON.stringify and also retains toJSON functionality as other Prototype libraries may depend on it.
Edit to make a bit more accurate:
The problem key bit of code is in the JSON library from JSON.org (and other implementations of ECMAScript 5's JSON object):

The problem is that the Prototype library extends Array to include a toJSON method, which the JSON object will call in the code above. When the JSON object hits the array value it calls toJSON on the array which is defined in Prototype, and that method returns a string version of the array. Hence, the quotes around the array brackets.
If you delete toJSON from the Array object the JSON library should work properly. Or, just use the JSON library.
I think a better solution would be to include this just after prototype has been loaded

JSON.stringify = function(value) { return value.toJSON(); };
JSON.parse = JSON.parse || function(jsonsring) { return jsonsring.evalJSON(true); };
This makes the prototype function available as the standard JSON.stringify() and JSON.parse(), but keeps the native JSON.parse() if it is available, so this makes things more compatible with older browsers.
I'm not that fluent with Prototype, but I saw this in its docs:
Object.toJSON({"a":[1,2]})
I'm not sure if this would have the same problem the current encoding has, though.

This is the code I used for the same issue:

You check if Prototype exists, then you check the version. If old version use Object.toJSON (if is defined) in all other cases fallback to JSON.stringify()

My tolerant solution checks whether Array.prototype.toJSON is harmful for JSON stringify and keeps it when possible to let the surrounding code work as expected:

As people have pointed out, this is due to Prototype.js - specifically versions prior to 1.7. I had a similar situation but had to have code that operated whether Prototype.js was there or not; this means I can't just delete the Array.prototype.toJSON as I'm not sure what relies on it. For that situation this is the best solution I came up with:

This seems complex, but this is complex only to handle most use cases.
The main idea is overriding JSON.stringify to remove toJSON from the object passed as an argument, then call the old JSON.stringify, and finally restore it.
