call js file from php - javascript

I have a js file called menu.js in the following path on my webhost
public_html/oc-content/themes/bender_black/js
$(document).ready(function(){
$("#nav-mobile").html($("#nav-main").html());
$("#nav-trigger span").click(function(){
if ($("nav#nav-mobile ul").hasClass("expanded")) {
$("nav#nav-mobile ul.expanded").removeClass("expanded").slideUp(250);
$(this).removeClass("open");
} else {
$("nav#nav-mobile ul").addClass("expanded").slideDown(250);
$(this).addClass("open");
}
});
This code is a responsive menu, I want it to be reciprocated on all my pages. I therefore tried to call it from my header.php file which is located in
public_html/oc-content/themes/bender_black
Here is part of what I put in header.php
<head>
<script type="text/javascript" src="js/menu.js"></script>
</head>
The menu is supposed to release a drop-down on smaller screens however nothing happens. Am I calling the js properly?
How can I fix this?

Script tags placed in the browser are loaded by the browser. You therefore need to provide a DocumentRoot relative path to the js file
<script type="text/javascript" src="oc-content/themes/bender_black/js/menu.js"></script>

It needs absolute path like:
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://mywebsite.com/oc-content/themes/bender_black/js/menu.js"></script>
But in Osclass case, you can register javascripts by internal PHP functions, which look like this:
Register the script:
osc_register_script('menu', osc_current_web_theme_url('js/menu.js'), 'jquery');
Enqueue:
osc_enqueue_script('menu');
If it uses jQuery, make sure you call the file after jQuery has been called.

Javascript(Jquery) executes in HTML header but not not when in an external JS file

I know this stuff has been asked before...but I am a bit confused about this still. I have my index.html file and I have a script tag linking to my external JS file. If I only have that script tag the JS does nothing, but if I copy the JS and paste it into it's own script tag in the HTML header it works just fine. There's gotta be something I'm missing with Jquery.
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html lang="en">
<head>
<meta charset="UTF-8">
<script src="jquery-3.2.0.js"></script>
<link rel="stylesheet" href="FinalProjectCss.css">
<title>Dustin Naylor - Final Project</title>
<script src="FinalProjectJS.js"></script>
<script>
$(document).ready(function(){
$(".section").click(function(){
if($(this).next().is(":hidden")) {
$(this).next().slideDown("fast");
} else{
$(this).next().hide();
}
});
});
</script>
</head>
<body>
<span class="section">Click Me</span>
<div class = "hiddenDiv">
Oh hey there.
</div>
</body>
</html>
So the code in the last script tag that is Jquery stuff is exactly copied into a separate JS file named FinalProjectJS.js. In the current state this code is in it works as desired, but when I remove that chunk of code from the html file it doesn't work....Sorry for my nubishness, I'm rather new and any help would be great! thanks!
Can you write the contents of your jquery file: FinalProjectJS.js? The syntax for calling the external file seems to be correct. So I'm thinking it might be something about the path or the jquery external file contents itself. Make sure you don't include <script> tags on that file. Here's a sample.
Another thing, last time I've worked with jquery, I can't directly see it take effect when both my files are stored locally. It had to be stored in a server first, then accessed by my PC. Only then did my jquery took effect. A dev I worked with added some text to my Google Chrome's properties (target) so that even if my file is not stored in a server, I can see jquery take effect even if both my HTML and jquery files are stored locally.
...sorry, I'm not allowed to comment yet to clarify your post.
You must add the jQuery script tag before FinalProjectJS.js for the jQuery snippet to work.
<script src="https://code.jquery.com/jquery-3.2.1.js"

External file script is not loading

Iam using load() for loading external html file.
$("#header_section").load("header.html");
$("#sidemenu_section").load("side_menu.html");
Here, HTML file is loaded and css also loaded but script file is not loading in the page
<script src="js/utility.js"></script>
I tried to declare the above script file inside the head and inside the body. Both are not working.
Check your relative path to the utility.js file and make sure to load juery.js library before load utility.js file.
and finally try this,
<script type="text/javascript" src="${pageContext.request.contextPath}/js/utility.js"></script>
to load the utility.js file.
I think you forget to add jquery.min.js file. use below code.
<head>
<script src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.11.3/jquery.min.js"></script>
<script src="js/utility.js"></script>
</head>
jQuery may only execute your code with the type attribute set to "text/javascript", per this bug filed a long time ago:
http://bugs.jquery.com/ticket/3733
Try this ...
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://your.cdn.com/first.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript">
loadScript("http://your.cdn.com/second.js", function(){
//initialization code
});
</script>
The jQuery code that adds HTML to the DOM always strips out <script> tags. It runs them and then throws them away.
An exception to that behavior is when you use "$.load()" with the hack that allows you to load a fragment of a page:
$.load("http://something.com/whatever #stuff_I_want", function() { ... });
In that case, the scripts are stripped and not evaluated/run.

js not working when page not on same folder with masterpage

Im using a responsive menu code which uses document.getElementById to trigger the menu.
It works for pages that are on the same folder as the masterpage. However for pages on a seperate folder, the menu isn't popping up.
Sample of the code:
<body>
<div class="mp-pusher" id="mp-pusher">
<nav id="mp-menu" class="mp-menu">
</nav>
</div>
<a class="codrops-icon codrops-icon-prev" href="#" id="trigger"><span>Menu</span></a>
<script src="/CodeTest/js/classie.js"></script>
<script src="/CodeTest/js/mlpushmenu.js"></script>
<script>
new mlPushMenu(document.getElementById('mp-menu'), document.getElementById('trigger'));
</script>
</body>
The script has to be in the body of the html for some reason as when I moved it up into the it doesn't work.
Try this,
<script type='text/javascript' src='js/classie.js'></script>
<script type='text/javascript' src='js/mlpushmenu.js'></script>
You need to show to the browser where to look for the JS file on the file you want to call the JS file.
If your JS file is in a folder called JS that is inside a folder called CodeTest, and you want to call this file in an html inside a folder called (for example) somethingFolder.. you should go back one level (. .) and then search for CodeTest -> js -> file.js, example:
src="../CodeTest/js/file.js"
Now if you want to call the JS file in a file that is on the same level of CodeTest folder, you must link without the dots (..), example:
src="CodeTest/js/file.js"

Prepare jquery before jquery and page load

I have recently discovered the new trend of including all .js script at the end of the page.
From what i have read so far seems pretty ok and doable with an exception.
The way I am working is using a template like:
<html>
<head>
<!-- tags, css's -->
</head>
<body>
<!-- header -->
<div id="wrapper">
<?php
include('pages/'.$page.'.php');
?>
</div>
<!-- footer -->
<!-- include all .js -->
</body>
</html>
Now, if I want to use this example on my page http://www.bootply.com/71401 , I would have to add the folowing code under my jquery inclusion.
$('.thumbnail').click(function(){
$('.modal-body').empty();
var title = $(this).parent('a').attr("title");
$('.modal-title').html(title);
$($(this).parents('div').html()).appendTo('.modal-body');
$('#myModal').modal({show:true});
});
But that would mean I either use that in every page - even if I do not have use for it, either generate it with php in the $page.'php' file and echoing it in the template file, after the js inclusion.
I am sure though, better methods exist and I don't want to start off by using a maybe compromised one.
Thanks!
Please avoid using inline scripts as they are not good maintainable and prevent the browser from caching them. Swap your inline scripts in external files.
Fore example you could put all your JavaScript in one file an check the presence of a specific element before initialize the whole code. E.g.:
$(document).ready(function(){
if($('.thumbnail').length) {
// your thumbnail code
}
});
A better way to execute "page specific" JavaScript is to work with a modular library like requirejs. You can modularize your scripts depending on their functionality (like thumbnails.js, gallery.js etc.) and then load the necessary script(s) depending e.g. on the existence of an element:
if($('.thumbnail').length) {
require(['ThumbnailScript'], function(ThumbnailScript){
ThumbnailScript.init();
});
}
The best way you can go is create a separate file for this code.
Let's name it app.js. Now you can include it under the jQuery inclusion.
<script type="text/javascript" src="app.js"></script>
This will prevent code repeat.
One more thing, pull all the code in $(document).ready(). Here is an example. So your app.js file will look like this:
$(document).ready(function(){
$('.thumbnail').click(function(){
$('.modal-body').empty();
var title = $(this).parent('a').attr("title");
$('.modal-title').html(title);
$($(this).parents('div').html()).appendTo('.modal-body');
$('#myModal').modal({show:true});
});
})

Inline Javascript works but not when external

I have this short Javascript code that I want to put in a external file. The reason being is because there will be many .htm pages that would use it. So instead of putting it all inline at every single file, I want to put it in an external file.
But the thing is, it doesn't work. The script is basically a "back to top" button. It works flawlessly when I put the script in the .htm file. Another note by the way, I'm loading the .htm file in a Div, could that cause problems? Edit: The file is loaded through the .load() jQuery function.
I have also tried putting the script inline in my index.html but it fails to work there too.
Here is the code:
$('.backtotopwrapper').click(function(){
$('body,html').animate({scrollTop: "0px"},1500);
});
Update: I have tested my other .js code and the ones that have nothing to do with the .htm file work. The code that is specific to the elements inside the .htm is the only one that doesn't work.
OK, 3 files :
main.html
loremIpsum2.html
myScroll.js
1). In main.html I call jQuery and myScroll.js external files
Also I have an empty wrapper div (<div id="loader"></div>) where I put the contents of loremIpsum2.html using jQuery .load() so
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html lang="en">
<head>
<meta charset="UTF-8">
<title>link to external js file</title>
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://code.jquery.com/jquery-1.8.3.min.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="myScroll.js"></script>
<script>
/* <![CDATA[ */
$(document).ready(function() {
$("#loader").load("loremIpsum2.html");
}); // ready
/* ]]> */
</script>
</head>
<body>
<div id="wrap">
<div id="loader"></div>
</div><!--wrap-->
</body>
</html>
2). In loremIpsum2.html, I have just a bunch of paragraphs but at the end I have my button :
<a class="backtotopwrapper" href="javascript:;">go to top</a>
3). In myScroll.js i Have the function for my scrolling button :
$(function () {
$('body').on("click", ".backtotopwrapper", function () {
$('body,html').animate({
scrollTop: 0
}, 1500);
});
});
Since I am loading the file where the button is via .load(), I am using .on() in its delegated form.
See DEMO and feel free to explore the source code.
NOTE : .on() requires jQuery v1.7+
I had the same problem but didn't perform any solution mentioned here, i actually dicovered what made it work for me when my external scripts werent working but the same code works internally.
Just remove any spaces/special characters from your external script filename e.g instead of calling it "admin-script.js", call it "adminscript.js", without the special characters like the hyphen, then refer to the script with the new name and thats it, it worked for me.
