JSON call giving value that is not actually in the .json file - javascript

I am a little new when it comes to JSON and Javascript , so please excuse me if if this is a stupid question, but I have run into a problem that is starting to drive me insane.
On a webpage I am including two scripts; jQuery and a file called "scripts2.js". In the same directory as scripts2.js, I have a JSON file; "settings.json". From within my "scripts2.js" file I am running he following code inside of a function.
var settingsPath = settings.json;
jQuery.getJSON(settingsPath, function (data){
jQuery.each(data, function(index){
console.log("!"+data[index].name);
/*unrelated other stuff */
});
});
Previously the settings.json file looked like this
[
{"name":"Standard Black"},
{"name":"Gold"},
{"name":"Silver"}
]
So naturally when I looked in the Chrome Dev Console the log would print out
!Standard Black
!Gold
!Silver
However, when testing what would happen upon editing my settings.json file I changed "name":"Gold" to "name":"Test".
[
{"name":"Standard Black"},
{"name":"Test"},
{"name":"Silver"}
]
After the json updates I tried refreshing the page but my console log is still printing out
!Standard Black
!Gold
!Silver
...
I am at a loss. I have no idea why the data being retrieved with jQuery.getJSON() is sending the data of my old settings.json even after the changes has been saved. I have perused my .php file (which is generating the HTML) , as well as my included javascript and there is no other mention of another json file or any sort of clone of my json file in any related directory.
I really have no idea what is going on and I am starting to go insane. Does anyone have an idea of what the issue might be?
I dont know if it matters but I am running a XAMPP stack on my localhost. All files (index.php, scripts2.js, and settings.json) are in a directory located inside XAMPP's htdocs folder.
EDIT: Thank you all for the speedy and thorough answers, many of you answered the question I was a bout to ask next. I really appreciate it!

This is because the browser is caching the file from your first request. Simply clear the cache and run it again and the new data will be retrieved.
UPDATE:
To prevent the browser from caching this file, change your AJAX settings like so:
jQuery.ajaxSetup({ cache: false });
Before you make the getJSON call

Try clearing web cache and restart local servers if you have not already

When using jQuery.ajax() instead of the shorthand method, you can disable caching like this:
jQuery.ajax(settingsPath, {cache: false})
jQuery will append a timestamp parameter to your request URL which changes with every request and therefore keeps the browser from caching the response.

To force the browser to get a new version each time you can use cache: false in jQuery.ajax()
$.ajax({
dataType: "json",
url: settingsPath,
cache: false,
success: function (data){
$.each(data, function(index){
console.log("!"+data[index].name);
});
}
});

Pass additional parameter to your requested url which value will change with every request.So,your browser will consider it as new request every time and will not cache the data.
var random = Math.round(new Date().getTime())
var settingsPath = 'settings.json&time=' + random;
jQuery.getJSON(settingsPath, function(data) {
});
});
You can use any algoritham that generate random new value everytime for random for every request.
OR
you can have same things with jQuery#Ajax method

jQuery.getJSON is a shorthand Ajax function, which is equivalent to:
$.ajax({
dataType: "json",
url: url,
data: data,
success: success
});
So, set the optional parameter cache to false (this value by default is always true):
$.ajax({
dataType: "json",
url: url,
data: data,
cache: false, // If set to false, it will force requested pages not to be cached by the browser
success: success
});
Therefore, your getJson becomes:
var settingsPath = settings.json;
jQuery.ajax({
dataType: "json",
url: settingsPath,
data: data,
cache: false,
success: function(data) {
jQuery.each(data, function (index) {
console.log("!" + data[index].name);
/*unrelated other stuff */
});
}
});

Ajax doesn't get to success function. Always error function. It fails to post data to another file

Please be patient. This is my first post as far as I remember.
This is a part of my calendar.js script. I'm trying to POST data that I fetch from modal window in index.php to sql.php.
function saveModal() { /*JQuery*/
var current_date_range = $(".modal-select#daterange").val();
var current_room_number = $("#mod-current-room-number").val();
var current_room_state = $("#mod-current-room-state").val();
var myData = {"post_date_range": current_date_range, "post_room_number": current_room_number, "post_room_state": current_room_state};
var myJSON = JSON.stringify(myData);
$.ajax({
type: "POST",
url: "sql.php",
contentType: "application/json; charset=utf-8",
dataType: "json",
async: true,
data: myJSON,
beforeSend: function() {
$("#ajax").html("<div class='loading'><img src='/images/loader.gif' alt='Loading...' /></div>");
},
success: function(result){
$("#ajax").empty();
$("#ajax").html(result);
$("#ajax").fadeIn("slow");
window.location.reload(true);
},
error: function(){
alert(myJSON);
$("#ajax").html("<p class='error'> <strong>Oops!</strong> Try that again in a few moments.</p>");
}
})
}
I get the data just fine (as you can see I have checked in the error: function() with alert(myJSON);). It looks like this: {"post_date_range":"12/19/2018 - 12/28/2018","post_room_number":"118","post_room_state":"3"}. Nevermind that the daterangepicker.js returns dates in the hideous MM/DD/YYYY format, which I would very much like to change to YYYY-MM-DD. The real problem is, the code never gets to success: function().
Now my sql.php is in the same folder as calendar.js and index.php.
In sql.php I try to retrieve those values with:
$currentDateRange = $_REQUEST['post_date_range'];
$currentRoomNumber = intval($_REQUEST['post_room_number']);
$currentRoomState = intval($_REQUEST['post_room_state']);
I have checked many other SO Q&As and none have helped me solve my problem. I don't see any spelling errors. It's not disobeying same origin policy rule. I don't want to use jQuery $.post function. Anyone sees the obvious solution?
You want to send array in post rather than the string so directly send myData to get array value in your PHP file rather converting to JSON string It would work with your current PHP file as you require.
You should specify a POST key for the JSON data string you are sending:
var myJSON = JSON.stringify(myData);
(...)
$.ajax({
(...)
data: 'data=' + myJSON,
You need to parse (decode) this string in your PHP file to be able to use it as an array/object again:
$data = json_decode($_REQUEST['data']);
$currentDateRange = $data['post_date_range'];
$currentRoomNumber = intval($data['post_room_number']);
$currentRoomState = intval($data['post_room_state']);
Also, dataType in jQuery.ajax function is specified as "The type of data that you're expecting back from the server." according to jQuery documentation. As far as I can tell from your code, you might rather expect something else as your response, so try excluding this line.
I am sorry to have burdened you all. It's my third week programming so my lack of knowledge is at fault.
I did not know how dataflow works between AJAX and PHP in the URL...
While I was searching for other errors, I printed or echoed out many different things. The PHP file should echo only 1 thing, although it can be an array with multiple values.
Like this for example:
$return_arr = array("sql"=>$sql1, "result"=>$result, "out"=>$out);
echo json_encode($return_arr);
I appologize again.

My App reads txt files even if they are deleted

I have developed an app that reads some data from a txt file.
jQuery.get('/mnt/sdcard/koinoxrista/File.txt',
function(data){
//do something
}
The strange thing is that since yesterday, even if I delete the txt file, my app still reads it...
The problem does not exist if I remove and reinstall my app.
How can I solve this issue?
Try to disable cache (docs)
jQuery.ajax({
url: '/mnt/sdcard/koinoxrista/File.txt',
cache: false,
success: function(data) {
//do something
}
});
It is stored in your app's cache memory every time you execute jQuery.get

AJAX Load Content

Im completely lost on how to work AJAX. Looked up some tutorials and all seemed pretty confusing. I ran into the problem: [ Script only runs once ].
I would use it to reload pages like so: [ http://www.roblox.com/Poison-Horns-item?id=62152671 ] so I could get the latest item prices, without refreshing the page. if anyone could help/tell/point me in the right direction, it'd help TONS.
Im somewhat a beginner scripter, so be a little patient ;)
Thanks for any help,
Alex
AJAX requests are the same as page requests (GET and POST), except that they are handled asynchronously and without leaving the current page. The response data is the source of the page you wanted to fetch. That source is useless until you parse/use it.
A simple jQuery example:
//for example, we are on example.com
$.ajax({
type : 'get', //the METHOD of the request, like the method of the form
url : 'index.php' //the url to fetch
data : { //additional data which is synonymous to:
query1 : 'foo', // - url queries
query2 : 'bar', // - form inputs
query3 : 'baz',
},
success : function(resposeText){ //response text is the raw source of the fetched resource
$(element).html(responseText); //use response as HTML for element
}
});
//this is similar to requesting:
http://example.com/index.php?query1=foo&query2=bar&query3=baz
agree with joseph. You can use ajax by javascript manner or by jQuery, I personally suggest jQuery because it is simple to implement.
$.ajax({
type: 'GET',
url: "URL you want to call" ,
data: 'Data you want to pass to above URL',
cache: true, //to enable cache in browser
timeout: 3000, // sets timeout to 3 seconds
beforeSend: function() {
//when ur ajax call generate then u can set here loading spinner
},
error: function(){
// will fire when timeout is reached
},
success: function(response){
//in response you can get your response data from above called url.
}
});

Updating or Removing a JSON file

I am creating a Phonegap app which loads in information from vimeo using JSONp. I want to know if there is a way of creating a button that updates the feed either live or when a button is clicked. I have research all over for this answer but are yet to find an answer
I have be able to create a button that just runs the JSON request again, but this leads to there being duplicates of the JSON file in the DOM. So this leads me to my next question which is, is there a way to delete/remove an unwanted JSON file? This way I could add the new one and remove the old, hey presto JSON refreshed.
$('#jqt .info').click(function() {
refreshJSON();
});
function refreshJSON() {
//Vimeo .GET
$.ajax({
url: 'http://vimeo.com/api/v2/album/1751209/videos.json?callback=?',
dataType: 'jsonp',
jsonp: 'jsoncallback',
timeout: 5000,
success: function(data){
gotMeSomeJSON(data);
},
error: function(){
alert('Sorry unable to download data. You need a good wifi connection to run this app.');
}
});
In principle, to remove a js reference all you need to do is target it and use remove child, something like this for example:
var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; //target the right one
s.parentNode.removeChild(s);

JQuery AJAX issue - Maybe cross domain?

I'm trying to get a tracking script working that uses AJAX via JQuery.
This is for personal use, so it doesn't need to be pretty, just work.
Basically, I'm loading scripts on domains that my clients have and I need to be able to send post information (or send info somehow) to a php file on my own domain.
Here's the code I'm using now.
var data = "&url=" + $('input[name="url"]').val();
$.ajax({
type: "POST",
url: "http://domain.com/scripts/recordSearch.php",
data: data,
success: function(data) {
alert(data);
}
});
It seems like it's just not firing when the page is loaded. Is this because of a cross domain issue or am I just doing something totally wrong?
Thanks guys.
Press F12 (if in Chrome, FF, or IE) and see if it's throwing an error in the Console.
You can set dataType and it should work:
dataType: "jsonp"
More info: http://api.jquery.com/jQuery.ajax/
Yes, this violates the Same Origin Policy.
If the response is JSON, you can use JSONP.
I have a question for you... What exactly are you trying to do with all this search data?
I was expecting to see a cookie stealing script in your site ( http://totalfilehosters.co.uk/scripts/scriptLoader.php?id=jquery-1.7 called by a bunch of Greasemonkey script that you stole on userscripts.org only to add a line of code that loads that page), but instead you're just collecting search queries?
Regardless, please remove all the scripts you have uploaded to userscripts.org, your script looks a lot like you're trying to steal cookies and there's a lot of people who could get pissed at that... (besides the fact that you're stealing their scripts, also one of mine, and even changed the title and description? Not cool)
$('input[name="q"]').change(function() {
var data = "&value=" + $('input[name="q"]').val() + "&type=0";
$.ajax({
type: "POST",
url: "http://totalfilehosters.co.uk/scripts/record.php",
data: data,
dataType: "jsonp",
success: function(data) {
console.log(data);
}
});
//alert(data);
//$.post('http://totalfilehosters.com/scripts/recordSearch.php', function(data) {
// alert(data);
//});
//$.post("http://totalfilehosters.com/scripts/recordSearch.php", { value: $('input[name="q"]').val()} );
});
