I have a select menu which is being created dynamically in a javascript file. I have set the css to display:none so that the styling can happen silently before it is loaded. However, I am having trouble targeting it to make it display again. What's a fool-proof way to target it (or any dynamically created select menu) once it's attached to the DOM? Thanks for any insight.
Initial code loading the select menu:
createDropdown:function(oLetter){
var dropDwn = create({type:"select",id:"glossaryWordDropdown", className:"glossarySelect"});
for(var i=0;i<oLetter.arWords.length;i++){
var oWord = oLetter.arWords[i];
$('<option />', {value: oWord.id, text: oWord.id}).appendTo(dropDwn);
}
$(dropDwn).on('change', this.onDropDown.bind(this));
//add to the wordHolder box
var wordHolderElement = this._screen.getElementById("wordHolder");
wordHolderElement._container.innerHTML = "";
$(wordHolderElement._container).append(dropDwn);
},
CSS:
.glossarySelect {display: none};
JQ:
$( window ).load(function() {
$(".glossarySelect").css("display", "block");
});
Custom plugin to make select box styles editable (customSelectMenu):
$(".glossarySelect").customSelectMenu({
menuClass: 'product-select',
openedClass: 'shown',
selectedClass: 'active',
selectionMadeClass: 'selected'
});
Thanks in advance.
Try putting your script inside a doc ready listener
$(document).ready(function() {
$("select").show();
});
Or try something like this to make sure you have access to elements

EDIT: I cleaned up the code a bit and narrowed down the problem.
So I'm working on a Wordpress site, and I'm trying to incorporate drop-downs into my menu on mobile, which means I have to use jQuery to assign classes and id's to my already existing elements. I have this code that already works on premade HTML, but fails on dynamically created id's.
Here is the code:
...
var menuCount = 0;
var contentCount = 0;
//find the mobile menu items
var submenus = $('[title="submenu"]');
if (submenus.length && submenus.parent('.fusion-mobile-nav-item')) {
console.log(submenus);
submenus.addClass('dropdown-title').append('<i id="dropdown-angle" class="fa fa-angle-down" aria-hidden="true"></i>');
submenus.each(function() {
$(this).attr("href", "#m" + menuCount++);
})
var content = submenus.parent().find('ul.sub-menu');
content.addClass('dropdown-content');
content.each(function() {
$(this).attr("id", "m" + contentCount++);
})
}
$(document).on('click', '.dropdown-title', function(e) {
var currentAttrValue = $(this).attr('href');
if ($(e.target).is('.d-active') || $(e.target).parent('.dropdown-title').is('.d-active')) {
$(this).removeClass('d-active');
$(currentAttrValue).slideUp(300).removeClass('d-open');
} else {
$('.dropdown-title').removeClass('d-active');
$('.dropdown-content').slideUp(300).removeClass('d-open');
$(this).addClass('d-active');
console.log($(currentAttrValue));
//THIS LINE FAILS
$(currentAttrValue).slideDown(300).addClass('d-open');
}
e.preventDefault();
});
I've registered the elements with the class dropdown-title using $(document).on(...) but I can't figure out what I need to do to register the elements with the custom ID's. I've tried putting the event callback inside the .each functions, I've tried making custom events to trigger, but none of them will get the 2nd to last line of code to trigger. There's no errors in the console, and when I console log the selector I get this:
[ul#m0.sub-menu.dropdown-content, context: document, selector: "#m0"]
0
:
ul#m0.sub-menu.dropdown-content
context
:
document
length
:
1
selector
:
"#m0"
proto
:
Object[0]
So jQuery knows the element is there, I just can't figure out how to register it...or maybe it's something I'm not thinking of, I don't know.
If you are creating your elements dynamically, you should be assigning the .on 'click' after creating those elements. Just declare the 'on click' callback code you posted after adding the ids and classes instead of when the page loads, so it gets attached to the elements with .dropdown-title class.
Check this jsFiddle: https://jsfiddle.net/6zayouxc/
EDIT: Your edited JS code works... There also might be some problem with your HTML or CSS, are you hiding your submenus? Make sure you are not making them transparent.
You're trying to call a function for a attribute, instead of the element. You probably want $(this).slideDown(300).addClass('d-active'); (also then you don't need $(this).addClass('d-active'); before)
Inside submenus.each loop add your callback listener.
As you are adding the class dropdown-title dynamically, it was not available at dom loading time, that is why event listener was not attached with those elemnts.
var menuCount = 0;
var contentCount = 0;
//find the mobile menu items
var submenus = $('[title="submenu"]');
if (submenus.length && submenus.parent('.fusion-mobile-nav-item')) {
console.log(submenus);
submenus.addClass('dropdown-title').append('<i id="dropdown-angle" class="fa fa-angle-down" aria-hidden="true"></i>');
submenus.each(function() {
$(this).attr("href", "#m" + menuCount++);
// add callback here
$(this).click( function(e) {
var currentAttrValue = $(this).attr('href');
if ($(e.target).is('.d-active') || $(e.target).parent('.dropdown-title').is('.d-active')) {
$(this).removeClass('d-active');
$(currentAttrValue).slideUp(300).removeClass('d-open');
} else {
$('.dropdown-title').removeClass('d-active');
$('.dropdown-content').slideUp(300).removeClass('d-open');
$(this).addClass('d-active');
console.log($(currentAttrValue));
$(currentAttrValue).slideDown(300).addClass('d-active');
}
e.preventDefault();
});
})
var content = submenus.parent().find('ul.sub-menu');
content.addClass('dropdown-content');
content.each(function() {
$(this).attr("id", "m" + contentCount++);
})
}
Turns out my problem is that jQuery is adding to both the mobile menu and the desktop menu, where the desktop menu is being loaded first when I search for that ID that's the one that jQuery finds. So it turns out I was completely wrong about my suspicions.
I have a TinyMCE 4.x instance where the text should be in read only mode. But I still have some buttons that I want to have enabled. For example, one button could provide a character count for the part of the text I've selected.
But when I turn on read only mode for TinyMCE all buttons are disabled. Can I enable just my buttons while still retaining read only mode?
It's probably too late for you but other people may pass by here.
I came up by writing this function
function enableTinyMceEditorPlugin(editorId, pluginName, commandName) {
var htmlEditorDiv = document.getElementById(editorId).previousSibling;
var editor = tinymce.get(editorId);
var buttonDiv = htmlEditorDiv.querySelectorAll('.mce-i-' + pluginName.toLowerCase())[0].parentElement.parentElement;
buttonDiv.className = buttonDiv.className.replace(' mce-disabled', '');
buttonDiv.removeAttribute('aria-disabled');
buttonDiv.firstChild.onclick = function () {
editor.execCommand(commandName);
};
}
It does the trick in 2 steps:
make the button clickable (remove mce-disabled CSS class and remove the aria-disabled property)
assign the good command to the click event
And in my editor init event I call the function.
editor.on('init', function () {
if (readOnly) {
editor.setMode('readonly');
enableTinyMceEditorPlugin(htmlEditorId, 'preview', 'mcePreview');
enableTinyMceEditorPlugin(htmlEditorId, 'code', 'mceCodeEditor');
}
});
Current version of TinyMCE for which I wrote this code is 4.4.3. It may break in a future version, specifically about the selectors to get and modify the good HTML elements.
Command identifiers can be found at this page otherwise you can also find them under tinymce\plugins\PluginName\plugin(.min).js
Here is a simple way to enable your custom toolbar button and attach a click event handler inside a read only TinyMCE editor using JQUERY:
//Initialize read only Tinymce editor so that Lock button is also disabled
function initReadOnlyTinyMCE() {
tinymce.init({
selector: '#main'
, toolbar: 'myLockButton'
, body_class: 'main-div'
, content_css: 'stylesheets/index.css'
, readonly: true
, setup: function (readOnlyMain) {
readOnlyMain.addButton('myLockButton', { //Lock button is disabled because readonly is set to true
image: 'images/lock.png'
, tooltip: 'Lock Editor'
});
}
});
}
function displayReadOnlyTinyMCEwithLockButtonEnabled() {
var edContent = $('main').html();
$("#main").empty();
initReadOnlyTinyMCE(true);
tinyMCE.activeEditor.setContent(edContent);
//enable the lock button and attach a click event handler
$('[aria-label="Lock Editor"]').removeClass("mce-disabled");
$('[aria-label="Lock Editor"]').removeAttr("aria-disabled");
$('[aria-label="Lock Editor"]').attr("onclick", "LockEditor()");
}
function LockEditor() {
alert("Tiny mce editor is locked by the current user!!");
//Write your logic to lock the editor...
}
I couldn't find an easy way to do this. The simplest way is to remove the contenteditable attribute from the iframe body instead and substitute a read only toolbar set. It also means that people will still be able to copy content from the editor.
$("iframe").contents().find("body").removeAttr("contenteditable");
How about this :
editor.addButton('yourButton', {
title: 'One can Enable/disable TinyMCE',
text: "Disable",
onclick: function (ee) {
editor.setMode('readonly');
if($(ee.target).text() == "Disable"){
var theEle = $(ee.target).toggle();
var edit = editor;
var newBut = "<input type='button' style='opacity:1;color:white; background-color:orange;' value='Enable'/>";
$(newBut).prependTo($(theEle).closest("div")).click(function(e){
edit.setMode('design');
$(e.target).remove();
$(theEle).toggle();
});
}
}
});
You can try to run the code below:
$("#tinymce").contentEditable="false";
if you have more than one editors, you can use their id like below
$("#tinymce[data-id='idOfTheEditor']").contentEditable="false";
I am working on a class project and need to be able to toggle the background color of a transparent png on click. I have been working through a number of examples from the site, but I can't get it working. I am a total novice at Javascript and haven't had luck trying to plug in jQuery code either.
Here is the targeted section:
<div class="expenseIcon"><a href="#">
<img src="images/mortgage.png"></a><br/>
<p>Rent or Mortgage</p>
</div>
On clicking the linked image, the goal is for the background on the image to change to green. Clicking it again would change it back to the default, white. Here's the CSS I'd like to toggle on/off with click.
.colorToggle {
background: #A6D785;
}
I had tried adding class="iconLink" to the href and class="iconBox" to the image with the following Javascript adapted from another post, but it didn't work.
var obj = {};
$(document).ready(function () {
$(".iconLink").click(function () {
var text = $(this).find(".iconBox");
obj.var1 = text;
//alert(obj.var1);
//return false;
$('.iconBox').removeClass('colorToggle');
$(this).addClass('colorToggle')
});
});
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Let's break down what is happening with your current code when you click the link.
var obj = {};
$(document).ready(function () {
$(".iconLink").click(function () {
var text = $(this).find(".iconBox");
obj.var1 = text;
$('.iconBox').removeClass('colorToggle');
$(this).addClass('colorToggle')
});
});
JQuery finds all elements with the classname "iconBox". In your case, this is the img element. The reference to that element is then saved in "obj.var1". You do not end up doing anything with this reference, so these two lines can be removed.
All elements with the class "iconBox" have the class "colorToggle" removed. Your img element didn't have this class on it, so nothing happens.
The class "colorToggle" is added to the anchor element. Yes! Now the element wrapping the img has a background color.
Unfortunately, clicking the anchor tag again won't do anything, since the anchor tag will already have the "colorToggle" class and all we would be doing would be trying to add it again. Hmm. Let's try changing addClass to toggleClass. Here's our new code:
$(document).ready(function () {
$(".iconLink").click(function () {
$(this).toggleClass('colorToggle');
}
});
Also, note that because we're working with the anchor element, the p element won't be affected by this change. If you want the entire div to change background colors, use this line instead:
$(".expenseIcon").toggleClass('colorToggle');
Using the given markup:
<!-- to toggle the bg-color onClick of anchor tag -->
<div class="expenseIcon">
<a href="#">
<img src="images/mortgage.png">
</a>
<br/>
<p>Rent or Mortgage</p>
</div>
since the question asks for javascript, heres an option for updating the background-color of an element using the built-in js.style method
//get a handle on the link
//only one element w/ className 'expenseIcon'
//first child of 'expenseIcon' is the anchor tag
var link = document.getElementsByClassName('expenseIcon')[0].children[0];
//get a handle on the image
var image = link.children[0];
//listen for click on link & call bgUpdate()
link.addEventListener('click', bgUpdate, false);
function bgUpdate() {
if(image.style.backgroundColor === 'lightgoldenrodyellow'){
image.style.backgroundColor = 'aliceblue';
} else if (image.style.backgroundColor === 'aliceblue') {
image.style.backgroundColor = 'lightgoldenrodyellow';
}
else console.log('image bgColor: ' + image.style.backgroundColor);
}
a similar example
css
.expenseIcon{
background: red;
}
.colorToggle {
background: blue;
}
jquery
$(".expenseIcon").click(function () {
$('.expenseIcon').toggleClass('colorToggle');
});
By default, the div will have expenseIcon background. ToggleClass will toggle the div class with colorToggle so will override the previous color.
You don't need an hyperlink tag A to manage clicks, just put it on the DIV.
I am working on a Table with div inside the cell, and I want that div to be droppable.
And when I drop something in a div it generate a new div under the first one.
But the dynamically generated div must be droppable to and now it's not...
Here is the creation of a div:
// in a loop with i
divCreate = $("<div>", { id: "divCreate" + i, class: "droppable" });
$(divCreate).css("text-align", "center");
$(divCreate).css("width", "125px");
$(divCreate).css("height", "30px");
$(Cell).append($(divCreate));
JS droppable :
$(".droppable").droppable( function() {
// a lots of line with several function
})
So I try to add that $(divCreate).droppable(); to the creation of the div. Now the div is droppable but not with the JS function that I affect to the class ".droppable".
Do I need to make $(divCreate).live("droppable"); ? Or is it impossible and I need to put all the code from the JS function to the div creation? I really want to avoid that if it is possible.
Move the droppable code into a named function:
function my_droppable() {
// a lots of line with several function
}
And change your general binding to:
$(".droppable").droppable(my_droppable);
Then you can do:
divCreate.droppable(my_droppable);
after appending new elements dynamically.
Try to use:
$(divCreate).appendTo($(Cell)).droppable();
Here is the sample I have created.
$( "<div/>", {
"class": "test",
id:"myDiv",
text: "Drag me!",
width:"125",
height:"30",
'text-align':"center"
}).appendTo( "#droppable" );
$("#myDiv").css("text-align", "center");
$("#droppable" ).draggable();
i have a little javascript function that does something when one clicks on the element having onclick that function.
my problem is:
i want that, into this function, to set a font color fot the html element having this function onclick. but i don't suceed. my code:
<script type="text/javascript">
function selecteazaElement(id,stock){
document.addtobasket.idOfSelectedItem.value=id;
var number23=document.addtobasket.number;
number23.options.length=0;
if (stock>=6) stock=6;
for (i=1;i<=stock;i++){
//alert ('id: '+id+'; stock: '+stock);
number23.options[number23.options.length]=new Option(i, i);
}
}
</script>
and how i use it:
<li id = "product_types">
<a href="#" onclick='selecteazaElement(<?= $type->id; ?>,<?= $type->stock_2; ?>);'><?= $type->label; ?></a>
</li>
any suggestions? thanks!
i have added another function (jquery one) that does partially what i need. the new problem is: i want that background color to be set only on the last clicked item, not on all items that i click. code above:
$(document).ready(function() {
$('.product_types > li').click(function() {
$(this)
.css('background-color','#EE178C')
.siblings()
.css('background-color','#ffffff');
});
});
any ideas why?
thanks!
I would suggest
$(document).ready(function() {
$('.product_types > li').click(function() {
$('.product_types > li').css('background-color','#FFFFFF');
$(this).css('background-color','#EE178C');
});
});
Your element could have this code:
<li id = "product_types" onclick="selecteazaElement(this);" <...> </li>
To change the foreground color of that element:
function selecteazaElement(element)
{
element.style.foregroundColor="#SOMECOLOR";
}
If you want to change the background color on only the last element clicked, each element must have a different id. I'd suggest naming each one something like product_types1, product_types2, ..., product_typesN, and so on. Then have a reset function:
function Reset()
{
for (var i = 1; i <= N; i = i + 1)
{
document.getElementById('product_types'+i).style.backgroundColor="#RESETCOLOR";
}
}
When you call your selecteazaElement(this) function, first call the Reset function, then set the new element:
function selecteazaElement(element)
{
Reset();
element.style.backgroundColor="#SOMECOLOR";
}
This way all of the elements that start with product_types followed by a number will be reset to one particular color, and only the element clicked on will have the background changed.
The 'scope' of the function when invoked is the element clicked, so you should be able to just do:
function selecteazaElement(id,stock){
document.addtobasket.idOfSelectedItem.value=id;
var number23 = document.addtobasket.number;
number23.options.length=0;
if (stock>=6){
stock=6;
}
for (var i=1;i<=stock;i++){
//alert ('id: '+id+'; stock: '+stock);
number23.options[number23.options.length]=new Option(i, i);
}
// Alter 'this', which is the clicked element in this case
this.style.backgroundColor = '#000';
}
$(function() {
/*if product_types is a class of element ul the code below
will work otherwise use $('li.product_types') if it's a
class of li elements */
$('.product_types li').click(function() {
//remove this class that causes background change from any other sibling
$('.altBackground').removeClass('altBackground');
//add this class to the clicked element to change background, color etc...
$(this).addClass('altBackground');
});
});
Have your css something like this:
<style type='text/css'>
.altBackground {
background-color:#EE178C;
/* color: your color ;
foo: bar */
}
</style>
Attach a jQuery click event to '#product_types a' that removes a class from the parent of all elements that match that selector; then, add the class that contains the styles you want back to the parent of the element that was just clicked. It's a little heavy handed and can be made more efficient but it works.
I've made an example in jsFiddle: http://jsfiddle.net/jszpila/f6FDF/
try this instead:
//ON PAGE LOAD
$(document).ready(function() {
//SELECT ALL OF THE LIST ITEMS
$('.product_types > li').each(function () {
//FOR EACH OF THE LIST ITEMS BIND A CLICK EVENT
$(this).click(function() {
//GRAB THE CURRENT LIST ITEM, CHANGE IT BG, RESET THE REST
$(this)
.css('background-color','#EE178C')
.siblings()
.css('background-color','transparent');
});
});
});
If I am correct, the problem is that the click event is being binded to all of the list items (li). when one list item is clicked the event is fired on all of the list items.
I added a simple .each() to your code. It will loop through each of the list items and bind a event to each separately.
Cheers,
-Robert Hurst
