Hiding an element using jQuery - javascript

I'm trying to hide an element using jQuery, but I think I did something wrong. Please take a look at my code:
<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/2.1.3/jquery.min.js"></script>
<script type = "text/javascript">
$(function(){
function hide(id) {
$("#"+id).hide();
}
});
hide("test");
</script>
<div id = "test"> Hello </div>

Sushil is right, but also, your "hide" function should be outside the $() function and the call to it goes on the inside. The whole thing looks like this:
function hide(id) {
$("#" + id).hide();
}
$(function(){
hide("test");
});
Putting the hide() function inside of the $() makes it so you can only call it from inside of the $(). So, put it on the outside, and then you can call it from anywhere, including, from inside the $() part.

your javascript code should be like
$(function() {
function hide(id) {
$("#" + id).hide(); // notice the '+'
}
});

Jquery Display Div with Interval

I am looking to hide several divs one by one or with a time interval of 5 seconds, i tried below doesn't seem to work though
<div id="container">
<div id="data1">123</div>
<div id="data2">456</div>
<div id="data3">789</div>
<div id="data4">012</div>
</div>
<script>
$('document').ready(function(){
window.setTimeout('mytimer()',5000);
});
$('document').ready(function(){
window.setTimeout('mytimer2()',10000);
});
$('document').ready(function(){
window.setTimeout('mytimer3()',15000);
});
$('document').ready(function(){
window.setTimeout('mytimer4()',20000);
});
function mytimer(){ $('#data1').hide(); }
function mytimer2(){ $('#data2').hide(); }
function mytimer3(){ $('#data3').hide(); }
function mytimer4(){ $('#data4').hide(); }
</script>
I would use single timeout function as your are hiding at regular intervals. There is one mistake in your code you need to pass the reference of function to setTimeout instead of passing the function call as a string.
Live Demo
window.setTimeout(mytimer,1000);
index = 1;
function mytimer()
{
$('#data' + (index++)).hide();
if(index <= 4) window.setTimeout(mytimer,1000);
}
You need to use $(document) instead of $('document')
$('document') will look for HTML Element with document tag, which doesn't exist.
Learn to use developer tools, Here's a good read: How to open the JavaScript console in different browsers?
Code
$(document).ready(function(){
window.setTimeout(mytimer,5000); //You can simply pass the function reference
window.setTimeout(mytimer2,10000);
window.setTimeout(mytimer3,15000);
window.setTimeout(mytimer4,20000);
});
Try it this way:
$(document).ready(function(){
window.setTimeout(mytimer, 5000);
window.setTimeout(mytimer2, 10000);
window.setTimeout(mytimer3, 15000);
window.setTimeout(mytimer4, 20000);
});
function mytimer(){
$('#data1').hide();
}
function mytimer2(){
$('#data2').hide();
}
function mytimer3(){
$('#data3').hide();
}
function mytimer4(){
$('#data4').hide();
}
Well you can use setInterval function too for this and once all the elements have been hidden you can clearInterval like one below:
DEMO HERE
function mytimer(elem){
console.log('came here');
$(elem).hide();
}
$(document).ready(function(){
var i=0;
var interval=null;
interval = window.setInterval(function(){
i++;
if(i<=$('#container').children().length)
mytimer("#data"+i);
else
{
clearInterval(interval);
return;
}
},5000);
});
Try this change and so on for the rest:
window.setTimeout(mytimer, 5000);// removed quotes and `()`
Another solution using jQuery fadeOut():
$(function() {
for (var i = 1; 4 >= i; i++)
$('#data' + i).fadeOut(5000 * i);
});
<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.9.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
<div id="container">
<div id="data1">123</div>
<div id="data2">456</div>
<div id="data3">789</div>
<div id="data4">012</div>
</div>
Use .delay() in jquery . No Settimeout function needed.
$('#data1').delay(5000).hide('fast');
$('#data2').delay(10000).hide('fast');
$('#data3').delay(15000).hide('fast');
$('#data4').delay(20000).hide('fast');
<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/2.1.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
<div id="container">
<div id="data1">123</div>
<div id="data2">456</div>
<div id="data3">789</div>
<div id="data4">012</div>
</div>
There are multiple errors in your code.
You have used $('document').ready(function(){}), which is incorrect. document is a keyword, it shouldn't be in quotes.
You don't have to use multiple instance of calling $(document).ready(). You can call all your statements from a single function. You can also use $(function(){}).
While calling the function name inside the timeout function, you shouldn't put them under quotes. They act like keywords after you have defined them in your code. The function call inside the Timeout function shouldn't be followed by (). So it should be window.setTimeout(mytimer,5000);
Please refer the fiddle : http://jsfiddle.net/65gs8s9y/
I have modified your code which works fine now:
$(document).ready(function(){
window.setTimeout(mytimer,5000);
window.setTimeout(mytimer2,10000);
window.setTimeout(mytimer3,15000);
window.setTimeout(mytimer4,20000);
});
function mytimer(){
$('#data1').hide();
}
function mytimer2(){
$('#data2').hide();
}
function mytimer3(){
$('#data3').hide();
}
function mytimer4(){
$('#data4').hide();
}

Have the element who call my js function

I know my question have answer in the past but I don't have the vocabulary to find this.
I call a JavaScript function like this:

This function change the state of the element .stats-table but I want to know which button have been clicked to call this function?
Better : can I have a jQuery object of this button?
Try to pass the this reference to know which button was clicked,
HTML:
Voir +
JS:
function showTable(selec,elem){
var currentElem = $(elem); //Clicked element
}
If you don't want to change the signature of the function and the way you invoke it (as others have suggested), you can use the global window.event to identify the clicked element:
function showTable(selector)
{
var clickedElement = window.event.target;
//...
}
See MDN.
When you use jQuery, you might consider refactor your code like this:
$(document).ready(function(){
$('.show-table-link').on('click', function(){
var $usedButton = $(this)
showTable('.stats-table')
}
})

It's good practice to attach the on click handler instead of writing it inline. Further reading document.ready and jQuery event basics.
You can pass any value or id and your can identify the function
<script type="text/javascript">
function showTable(clss_name,fun_id)
{
if(fun_id=='A1')
{
alert("First function Executed");
}
if(fun_id=='A2')
{
alert("Second Function is executed");
}
}
</script>
......
......
......

If your function is like this:
function showTable(selec) {
// some code
}
You can get the clicked element like this, using this:
function showTable(selec) {
// some code
var clickedElem = this;
}

mousedown is not calling my function

I've created links to transition yet when the function is supposed to be called using the onmousedown event I get an uncaught undefined function. Clearly my function is defined. I'm am still learning code so what is it I don't see or understand. Any tips will be greatly appreciated.
<html>
<head>
<script type="text/javascript"src="js/jquery.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="js/jquery-ui.js"></script>
<script type="javascript">
$(document).ready(function (){
var url = "phpajaxtut.php";
});
function swapContent(cv){
$("#myDiv").html("animated gif goes here").show();
.post(url, {contentVar:cv}, function(data){
$("#myDiv").html(data).show();
});
}
</script>
Click the text
Click the text
Click the text
</head>
<body >
<div id ="myDiv">My default content</div>
</body>
</html>
Why not just use $.click(); instead, since you're already using jQuery, and forgo the hyperlinks? You can easily style some spans to look like as if that's what you want. My example just updates some text, but in there you can place / call your function.
See here:
// html
<span>Click Me</span>
<br />
<span>Click Me</span>
// js
var n = 0;
$("span").click(function(){
$(this).text($(this).text() + " " + n++);
});
Do you need a $ before .post?
$.post(url, {contentVar:cv}, function(data){
$(document).ready(function (){
var url = "phpajaxtut.php";
});
The var url isn't global. It can only be used inside the function
var url; //global url
$(document).ready(function (){
url = "phpajaxtut.php"; // set global url
});

how to call function in jquery from javascript

<script type="text/javascript" src="jscripts/jquery.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript">
$(document).ready(function(){
alert("funciton");
$(function(){
$.fn.gotof(){
alert("I am calling form jquery");
}
});
});
</script>
<input type="button" onclick="dofunc();">
<script type="text/javascript">
function dofunc(){
gotof();
}
</script>
how do i call gotof() that is present in jquery
and below is the code written over jsfiddle
There are a few errors in your code. Fixed it should look like this:
$.fn.gotof = function() { // has to be defined as a function, does not need to be inside a nested document ready function
alert("I am calling form jquery");
};
$(document).ready(function() {
alert("function is ready to use now");
});
function dofunc() {
$.fn.gotof(); // can call it using $.fn.gotof(), but it should really be called properly via a selector $('div').gotof();
}
http://jsfiddle.net/pSJL4/8/
Check out http://docs.jquery.com/Plugins/Authoring - this should answer your questior. You also are not defining your function correctly; instead of
$.fn.gotof(){
alert("I am calling form jquery");
}
you need
$.fn.gotof = function(){
alert("I am calling from jquery");
};

JQuery click text in span?

I'm trying to use JQuery to have a method fire when the following code gets clicked:
<div class="content_sub_list">
<img src="/imgs/close-icon.jpg" class="exit_sub_list"/>
hello
</div>
It is not doing anything and my JQuery code looks like this:
$(document).ready(
function()
{
$('#my_accnt').click(
function()
{
$('.content_sub_list').css("display", "block");
$('.content_sub_list').css("margin-left", "4px");
$('.content_sub_list').html('<div class="sub_list_header">My A<img src="/imgs/close-icon.jpg" class="exit_sub_list"/></div><BR />text');
});
$('#my_queue').click(
function()
{
$('.content_sub_list').css("display", "block");
$('.content_sub_list').css("margin-left", "165px");
$('.content_sub_list').html('<div class="sub_list_header">My Q<img src="/imgs/close-icon.jpg" class="exit_sub_list"/></div><BR />text');
});
$('.exit_sub_list').click(
function()
{
alert("hi");
$('.content_sub_list').css("display", "none");
});
});
My header looks like this:
<script src="/js/jquery.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
<script src="/js/mContentBar.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
Other functions work in it except this one? for some reason.
So what am I doing wrong, or how i can get this to work? Thanks
This is working for me. Make sure you have jQuery loaded properly. You can either place jquery.js after your html or wrap your jquery code with a document.ready function.
like
(function() {
$('.exit_sub_list').click(
function() {
alert("hi");
});
});
Check working example at http://jsfiddle.net/p6Q2d/
