How can I allow thrown errors to bubble up? - javascript

When I require a module that throws an error, it ends up returning an empty module instead of allowing that error to bubble up.
My code looks like:
var module = require("./path/to/the-module");
doSomethingWithComponent(module.mainComponent);
When there is no error thrown the module looks something like:
{
getters: []
actions: []
mainComponent: <TheComponent />
}
When there is an error it ends up like:
{}
An example of something that breaks the component looks like so:
var TheComponent = React.createClass({
getDefaultProps() {
return { x: this.props.x };
}
});
Using Chrome's "Pause On Caught Exceptions" option I've tracked down that the exception is happening but it being caught. I'm unable to track down where it's being caught at.
Here's a screenshot of the error happening:
Here's a screenshot highlighting how it gets set to an empty object:
My webpack config looks like:
var _ = require('lodash');
var path = require('path');
var fs = require('fs');
var webpack = require('webpack');
var ExtractTextPlugin = require('extract-text-webpack-plugin');
var vendorLibs = {
_: 'lodash',

jQuery: 'jquery',
bootstrap: 'bootstrap',

var config = {

},

]
};
module.exports = config;
This app is also using NuclearJS and this component being required is a result of an action being dispatched so it's possible it could also be catching it there.
I'd like this error to not be caught so that I can spot it and resolve it without diving into the debugger. Does anyone know how I can make that happen?

Turns out there was a section of code with a try/catch that looked pretty innocent but led to this issue. After I found that I can address the problem. It looked like so:
try {
require(`modules/${variableValue}/index`);
} catch (err) {
dbg(`Cannot load module ${variableValue}`);
}
The dbg was not logging in the browser thus I didn't see it.

WebPack output.library.type var is undefined

I am learning WebPack with a shortcode. In the code, we are trying to calculate the cube and square. They will suppose to store in a variable as per the following webpack.config.js.
const webpack = require('webpack');
const path = require('path');
const HtmlWebpackPlugin = require('html-webpack-plugin');
const MiniCssExtractPlugin = require("mini-css-extract-plugin");
const isDevelopment = process.env.NODE_ENV === 'development';
const config = {
entry: './src/index.ts',
output: {
path: path.resolve(__dirname, 'dist'),
library: {
type: 'var',
name: 'testVar'
},
filename: '[name].js'
},
mode: 'production',
plugins: [
new MiniCssExtractPlugin({
// Options similar to the same options in webpackOptions.output
// both options are optional
filename: "[name].css",
chunkFilename: "[id].css",
}),
new webpack.optimize.LimitChunkCountPlugin({
maxChunks: 1,
}),
new HtmlWebpackPlugin({
hash: true,
title: 'Video Player Play Ground',
myPageHeader: 'Sample Video Player',
template: './src/index.html',
filename: 'index.html'
})
],
module: {
rules: [
{
test: /\.s[ac]ss$/i,
exclude: /node_modules/,
use: [
// fallback to style-loader in development
MiniCssExtractPlugin.loader,
"css-loader",
"sass-loader",
],
},
{
test: /\.ts(x)?$/,
loader: 'ts-loader',
exclude: /node_modules/
},
{
test: /\.svg$/,
use: 'file-loader'
}
]
},
resolve: {
extensions: [
'.tsx',
'.ts',
'.js',
'.scss'
]
},
optimization: {
usedExports: true,
runtimeChunk: false,
minimize: false
}
};
module.exports = config;
As shown in the above config, we store the compiled javascript in the variable with the name "testVar".
The above approach working fine when we are using the following command line code "webpack --mode production"
In the final generated javascript file we have a line which equals to
testVar = webpack_exports;
Also, testVar.start is working fine.
But the above approach is not working when we are using the following command line "webpack serve --mode production" or "webpack serve"
When we run a local server, the testVar.start is undefined. I am not sure what I am doing wrong.
Following is the code we are using in the index.html file to call the start function, which we defined in our internal javascript
window.onload = function (){
alert(testVar);
console.log(testVar);
if(testVar.start !== undefined)
{
alert(testVar.start);
console.log(testVar.start);
testVar.start(3,2);
}
else {
alert("Start Function is undefined");
}
}
Also following is the code insight from index.ts and math.ts.
import {cube, square} from './math';
export function start(c:number, s:number) {
console.log(cube(c));
console.log(square(s));
}
export function square(x:number) {
return x * x;
}
export function cube(x:number) {
return x * x * x;
}
enter image description here
Finally, I got it working :-).
I need to add the following line in my webpack.config.js
devServer: {
injectClient: false
},
Following is the reference URL: https://github.com/webpack/webpack-dev-server/issues/2484
Don't forget to Vote it. Thanks.

module.exports error for webpack backend (node.js)

I'm trying to use webpack to bundle my backend code. It's currently using vanilla node.js where I'm using module.exports.x, and when I run webpack, it also outputs the export line i.e. module.exports.x. Now the problem is when I run nodemon on the file, it gives me the error TypeError: Cannot set property 'x' of undefined.

Waypoints comes bundled in several flavours, even via NPM, but I couldn't work out if there's a default implementation or not. So that's why your typical import Waypoint from 'waypoints' directive doesn't work.
I resolved this for my "vanilla ES6 + Webpack" setup as follows:
import 'waypoints/lib/noframework.waypoints.min.js';
const waypoint = new Waypoint({
element: document.getElementById('myScrollTarget'),
handler: () => {}
});
Basically #markedup is right, waypoints comes with various flavours, after installing waypoints if you look into /waypoints/lib/ folder you will see zepto|jquery|noframework.waypoints.js .
In this case you would require to import it as full path i.e.
import 'waypoints/lib/noframework.waypoints.min.js';
or
window.waypoint = require('waypoints/lib/noframework.waypoints');

"jQuery requires a window with a document" webpack 2 error

I bundled my node application with webpack2, I used JQuery with jade for my frontend. while run my application I am getting this error,
node_modules\jquery\dist\jquery.js:31
throw new Error( "jQuery requires a window with a document" );
^
Error: jQuery requires a window with a document
i used
var $ = require("jquery");
in all frontend javascript files.
I tried with this these solutions,
this to ,
{
test: require.resolve('jquery'),
loader: 'expose?$!expose?jQuery'
},
how I can handle this problem?
webpack.config.js
var path = require('path');
var nodeExternals = require('webpack-node-externals');
const webpack = require('webpack');
const HtmlWebpackPlugin = require('html-webpack-plugin');
const ExtractTextPlugin = require('extract-text-webpack-plugin');
module.exports = {
target: 'node',
entry: {
app: ['babel-polyfill', './bin/run.js'],
},
output: {
path: './build',
filename: '[name].min.js'
},
externals: [nodeExternals()],
plugins: [
new HtmlWebpackPlugin()
],
module: {
rules: [
{
test: /\.js$/,
loader: 'babel-loader',
exclude: /lodash/
},
{
test: /\.jade$/,
loader: 'jade-loader'
},
{
test: /\.css$/,
use: [
{loader: 'style-loader'},
{
loader: 'css-loader',
options: {
modules: true
}
}
]
},
],
noParse: [/ws/]
}
};
jQuery is to be used on the frontend (browser) only.
It looks like you are trying to use it in Node itself to reference back to $.
It's important to note that jQuery does not support server side rendering.
-> var $ = require("jquery"); won't work..

Integrating with webpack-isomorphic-tools

I'm trying to develop a react isomorphic app, and i've recently came up with the webpack-isomorphic-tools npm package.
I've tried to follow the documentation but unfortunately the images and style files doesn't get recognized, and not added to the webpack-assets.json file.
Up until now I've used this method:
if(process.env.BROWSER){
include('./style.scss');
}
But I understood webpack-isomorphic-tools is more beneficial.
for scss and other style files this is the error i get when running the server:
[webpack-isomorphic-tools] [debug] requiring ./shared/Root.scss
[webpack-isomorphic-tools] [error] asset not found: ./shared/Root.scss
for image files no errors are shown during the build, since no images are detected on the build. here is the webpack-assets.js:
{
"javascript": {
"main": "/build/bundle.js"
},
"styles": {},
"assets": {}
}
Relevant code:
webpack-isomorphic-tools-config.js:
var webpack_isomorphic_tools_plugin = require('webpack-isomorphic-tools/plugin');
module.exports =
{
debug: true,
webpack_assets_file_path : 'public/build/webpack-assets.json',
webpack_stats_file_path : 'public/build/webpack-stats.json',
assets:
{
images:
{
extensions: ['png', 'jpg', 'gif', 'ico', 'svg']
},
fonts:
{
extensions: ['woff', 'woff2', 'eot', 'ttf']
},
styles:
{
extensions: ['scss', 'less', 'css'],
filter(module, regular_expression, options, log)
{
if (options.development)
{
// In development mode there's Webpack "style-loader",
// which outputs `module`s with `module.name == asset_path`,
// but those `module`s do not contain CSS text.
//
// The `module`s containing CSS text are
// the ones loaded with Webpack "css-loader".
// (which have kinda weird `module.name`)
//
// Therefore using a non-default `filter` function here.
//
return webpack_isomorphic_tools_plugin.style_loader_filter(module, regular_expression, options, log)
}
// In production mode there will be no CSS text at all
// because all styles will be extracted by Webpack Extract Text Plugin
// into a .css file (as per Webpack configuration).
//
// Therefore in production mode `filter` function always returns non-`true`.
},
// How to correctly transform kinda weird `module.name`
// of the `module` created by Webpack "css-loader"
// into the correct asset path:
path: webpack_isomorphic_tools_plugin.style_loader_path_extractor,
// How to extract these Webpack `module`s' javascript `source` code.
// Basically takes `module.source` and modifies its `module.exports` a little.
parser: webpack_isomorphic_tools_plugin.css_loader_parser
}
}
}
index.js (looks a lot like the one in the documentation):
'use strict';
var path = require('path');
require('babel-register');
require('babel-polyfill');
require('app-module-path').addPath(path.join(__dirname,'shared'));
global._development_ = false
if (process.env.NODE_ENV !== 'production'){

}
var Webpack_isomorphic_tools = require('webpack-isomorphic-tools');
// this must be equal to your Webpack configuration "context" parameter
var project_base_path = path.resolve(__dirname);
// this global variable will be used later in express middleware
global.webpack_isomorphic_tools = new Webpack_isomorphic_tools(require('./webpack-isomorphic-tools-config'))
// enter development mode if needed
// (you may also prefer to use a Webpack DefinePlugin variable)
.development(!(process.env.NODE_ENV === 'production'))
// initializes a server-side instance of webpack-isomorphic-tools
// (the first parameter is the base path for your project
// and is equal to the "context" parameter of you Webpack configuration)
// (if you prefer Promises over callbacks
// you can omit the callback parameter
// and then it will return a Promise instead)
.server(project_base_path, function()
{
// webpack-isomorphic-tools is all set now.
// here goes all your web application code:
// (it must reside in a separate *.js file
