How to convert array in json format in jquery - javascript

I am trying to send ids(as array) in json format for that I used JSON.stringify(ids); and stored in variable z I am using array at server side to get values.
var ids = $("#infolist li div.No").map(function() {
return this.id;
}).get();
alert(ids);
console.log(ids);
if (ids) {
var z = JSON.stringify(ids);
alert(z);
$.ajax({
url: "UpdateNotification",
dataType: "json",
data: {ids: z},
success: function(data) {
console.log(z);
alert("success " + data.st);
}
});
}
console.log(ids) is showing ["25","27","28"].
console.log(z) is showing ["25","27","28"].
My problem is it is not calling server side method.
I may be due to not proper json format of data.
How to make it correct?
EDIT
At url If I use directly
http://localhost:8084/tt/UpdateNotification?ids=%5B%2225%22%2C%2227%22%2C%2228%22%5D
No server side method is called. This is the output of JSON.stratefy(ids).
But If I use below
http://localhost:8084/tt/UpdateNotification?ids=%2225%22&ids=%2226%22&ids=%2227%22
This calles ther serverside method

No need for var z = JSON.stringify(ids);.
Just do:
// ...
data: { ids: ids },
// ...

Print JSON string from URL

I'm using ajax to parse JSON data from a URL. I need to capture the parsed array into a variable. How would I go about this? Thanks
function rvOffices() {
$.ajax({
url:'https://api.greenhouse.io/v1/boards/roivantsciences/offices',
type:'GET',
data: JSON.stringify(data),
dataType: 'text',
success: function( data) {
// get string
}
});
}
rvOffices();
var rvOfficesString = // resultant string
You can use JSON.parse(data) to convert the desired output to JSON, and then access the objects and array indexes from within that with .object and [array_index] respectively:
function rvOffices() {
$.ajax({
url: 'https://api.greenhouse.io/v1/boards/roivantsciences/offices',
type: 'GET',
dataType: 'text',
success: function(data) {
var json_result = JSON.parse(data);
//console.log(json_result); // The whole JSON
console.log(json_result.offices[0].name);
}
});
}
rvOffices();
<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/2.1.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
You also don't need to pass any data, as you're performing a GET request.
Hope this helps! :)
So I guess you are not sure about the ajax call, so lets break it..
Ajax call is a simply method to make a request to remote resource (Get/post/put...) the type of request (GET/POST) depends upon your need.
so if you have an endpoint that return simply data as in your case a simple get/post request is sufficient.
You can send addition data with request to get the data from endpoint (say id of resource (say person) whose other fields you want to get like name, age, address).
here is link for ajax request in jQuery
here is jQuery parse json parse json in jQuery
So for example:
// let's say when you call this function it will make post request to fixed end point and return data else null
function rvOffices() {
var res = null; // let be default null
$.ajax({
url:'https://api.greenhouse.io/v1/boards/roivantsciences/offices',
type:'GET', // type of request method
dataType: 'text', // type of data you want to send if any.
success: function( data) {
res = $.parseJSON(data); // will do the parsing of data returned if ajax succeeds (assuming your endpoint will return JSON data.)
}
});
return res;
}
// lets call the function
var rvOfficesString = rvOffices();
// print the value returned
console.log(rvOfficesString);
<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/2.1.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
You can try something like: -
$.ajax({
url:'https://api.greenhouse.io/v1/boards/roivantsciences/offices',
type:'GET',
dataType: 'text',
success: function(response) {
// get string
window.temp = JSON.parse(response);
}
});

Writing specific value from database to HTML via AJAX/jQuery

First time question, hoping for some advice:
Code on webpage:
<form id="inbound" action="javascript:validateinbound();">
<input type="submit" value="Go!" id="inbound">
<script>
function validateinbound() {
$('#inbound:input').each(function () {
var iv = $(this).val();
$('#response').hide();
$('#mydiv').fadeIn(1200);
$('#mydiv').delay(1200).fadeOut(600);
$(function () {
$.ajax( {
url: 'validateinbound.php',
data: "variable="+iv,
dataType: 'json',
success: function(data) {
var response = JSON.stringify(data);
$('#response').delay(3600).fadeIn(600);
$('#response').append("<p>Answer: </p>"+response);
}
});
});
});
};
</script>
</form>
This returns a string that I would like to work with that looks like this:
Answer:
[{"id":"1","answer":"Pull logging","question_id":"5","feature_id":"1","answer_id":"9"}]
Ideally what I would like to do is only select the 'value' to the maxmail_answer 'key' (hopefully those are the right terms?) to the webpage instead. Right now there is only one value but there will be more in the future so something that could parse this string for a specific key and only output those values.
Visually I would see:
Answer: Pull logging ( and then another Answer: for each value I pull out )
First time ever using this site and these languages so total noob and would appreciate some guidance.
Thanks!
You do not to stringify the JSON response, you can get the value of the key you want using the object notation . as follows:
function validateinbound() {
$('#inbound:input').each(function () {
var iv = $(this).val();
$('#response').hide();
$('#mydiv').fadeIn(1200);
$('#mydiv').delay(1200).fadeOut(600);
$(function () {
$.ajax( {
url: 'validateinbound.php',
data: "variable="+iv,
dataType: 'json',
success: function(data) {
//var response = JSON.stringify(data); // no need for this line
$('#response').delay(3600).fadeIn(600);
// catch the answer here
// your result returns within an array so you need to catch the first index
$('#response').append("<p>Answer: </p>"+response[0].answer);
}
});
});
});
};
Besides, ids are unique, you can only access a single element via id selector #, you do not need a .each
What you are receiving from your server is an array of objects in the JSON format. The sample that you have put has the length of "1" and therefore, if want to reach the "id" of the first array, it would be like this:
// var response = JSON.stringify(data); (// don't stringify it!
$('#response').delay(3600).fadeIn(600);
$('#response').append("<p>Answer: </p>"+data[0].id);
You need here a loop to go through your array of results and display each result
success: function(data) {
var response = JSON.stringify(data);
$('#response').delay(3600).fadeIn(600);
$.each(response,function(index,value){//the each loop
$('#response').append("<p>Answer: </p>"+value.answer);//get the answer using . notation
});
}
Json.stringify() returns your javascript object as json data, but i think in your case your response is a json data which you need to manipulate. Json.parse() does this for you and you can access your answer as a property of the javascript object.
success: function(data) {
var response = JSON.parse(data);
$('#response').delay(3600).fadeIn(600);
$('#response').append("<p>Answer: </p>"+response[0].answer);
}
if your json data has multiple result and you need to work through all of them use a loop.
$.each(response,function(index, object){
var response = JSON.parse(data);
$('#response').delay(3600).fadeIn(600);
$('#response').append("<p>Answer: </p>"+object.answer);
});
First of all. Thank you to everyone who commented on this to help me get started in the right direction. I was able to get what I needed working!! Here is the solution:
<form id="inbound" action="javascript:validateinbound();">
<input type="submit" value="Go!" id="inbound">
<script>
function validateinbound() {
$('#controlpanel:input').each(function () {
var iv = $(this).val();
$('#response').html("");
$('#response').hide();
$('#mydiv').fadeIn(1200);
$('#mydiv').delay(1200).fadeOut(600);
$(function () {
$.ajax( {
url: 'validateinbound.php',
data: "variable="+iv,
dataType: 'json',
success: function(data) {
var newdata = JSON.stringify(data);
var response = JSON.parse(newdata);
$('#response').delay(3600).fadeIn(600);
$.each(response, function(array, object) {
$('#response').append("<p>Answer: </p>"+object.answer);
});
}
});
});
});
};
</script>
</form>
I needed to parse the data correctly. So I used JSON.stringify to get the data into a string that JSON.parse could use to manipulate the data. But function(index,object) wouldn't work because my output was not an index, but an array. So when changing to function(array,object) this allowed me to get my data just the way that I needed.
Again thanks to everyone for their help!

AJAX save JSON array into multiple JS variables

I want to get multiple Values from a mySQL Query and save it into multiple JS Variables.
This is my JS file with my AJAX Code:
$.ajax({
async:false,
url: "get_data.php",
type: "POST",
data: {
d1: 'd1',a1: 'a1'
},
dataType: "JSON",
success: function (data) {
$("#result").text(JSON.stringify(data));
}
});
With $("#result").text(JSON.stringify(data)); i get this Result:
[{"d1":"2","a1":"3"}]
Now I want to save each Value into separate JS Variables (e.g: d1 into var default; a1 into var second)
How can i save my Values in seperate JS Variables?
See this
var data = '[{"d1":"2","a1":"3"}]';
var obj = JSON.parse(data);
console.log(obj[0]);
document.write("d1 = " + obj[0].d1);
document.write(" // ");
document.write("a1 = " + obj[0].a1);
Write this code in success of your $.ajax.

javascript, array of string as JSON

I'm having problems with passing two arrays of strings as arguments in JSON format to invoke ASMX Web Service method via jQuery's "POST".
My Web Method is:
[ScriptMethod(ResponseFormat=ResponseFormat.Json)]
public List<string> CreateCollection(string[] names, string[] lastnames)
{
this.collection = new List<string>();
for (int i = 0; i < names.Length; i++)
{
this.collection.Add(names[i] + " " + lastnames[i]);
}
return this.collection;
}
Now, the js:
function CreateArray() {
var dataS = GetJSONData(); //data in JSON format (I believe)
$.ajax({
type: "POST",
url: "http://localhost:45250/ServiceJava.asmx/CreateCollection",
data: dataS,
contentType: "application/json; charset=utf-8",
dataType: "json",
success: function (data) {
//something
}
})
}
GetJSONData() is my helper method creating two arrays from column in a table. Here's the code:
function GetJSONData() {
//take names
var firstnames = $('#data_table td:nth-child(1)').map(function () {
return $(this).text();
}).get(); //["One","Two","Three"]
//take surnames
var surnames = $('#data_table td:nth-child(2)').map(function () {
return $(this).text();
}).get(); //["Surname1","Surname2","Surname3"]
//create JSON data
var dataToSend = {
names: JSON.stringify(firstnames),
lastnames: JSON.stringify(surnames)
};
return dataToSend;
}
Now, when I try to execude the code by clicking button that invokes CreateArray() I get the error:
ExceptionType: "System.ArgumentException" Message: "Incorrect first
JSON element: names."
I don't know, why is it incorrect? I've ready many posts about it and I don't know why it doesn't work, what's wrong with that dataS?
EDIT:
Here's dataToSend from debugger for
var dataToSend = {
names: firstnames,
lastnames: surnames,
};
as it's been suggested for me to do.
EDIT2:
There's something with those "" and '' as #Vijay Dev mentioned, because when I've tried to pass data as data: "{names:['Jan','Arek'],lastnames:['Karol','Basia']}", it worked.
So, stringify() is not the best choice here, is there any other method that could help me to do it fast?
Try sending like this:
function CreateArray() {
var dataS = GetJSONData(); //data in JSON format (I believe)
$.ajax({
type: "POST",
url: "http://localhost:45250/ServiceJava.asmx/CreateCollection",
data: {names: dataS.firstnames,lastnames: dataS.surnames} ,
contentType: "application/json; charset=utf-8",
dataType: "json",
success: function (data) {
//something
}
})
}
This should work..
I think since you are already JSON.stringifying values for dataToSend property, jQuery might be trying to sending it as serialize data. Trying removing JSON.stringify from here:
//create JSON data
var dataToSend = {
names : firstnames,
lastnames : surnames
};
jQuery will stringify the data when this is set dataType: "json".
Good luck, have fun!
Altough, none of the answer was correct, it led me to find the correct way to do this. To make it work, I've made the following change:
//create JSON data
var dataToSend = JSON.stringify({ "names": firstnames, "lastnames": surnames });
So this is the idea proposed by #Oluwafemi, yet he suggested making Users class. Unfortunately, after that, the app wouldn't work in a way it was presented. So I guess if I wanted to pass a custom object I would need to pass it in a different way.
EDIT:
I haven't tried it yet, but I think that if I wanted to pass a custom object like this suggested by #Oluwafemi, I would need to write in a script:
var user1 = {
name: "One",
lastname:"OneOne"
}
and later pass the data as:
data = JSON.stringify({ user: user1 });
and for an array of custom object, by analogy:
data = JSON.stringify({ user: [user1, user2] });
I'll check that one later when I will have an opportunity to.

Display search results from API

Hello there I'm trying to create an app to search for recipes. I've tried using the Yummly API and BigOven api, but I can't get either to work.
here is the code i have for bigOven. I can't get any search results to appear in the "results".
$(function() {
$('#searchform').submit(function() {
var searchterms = $("#searchterms").val();
// call our search twitter function
getResultsFromYouTube(searchterms);
return false;
});
});
function getResultsFromYouTube (searchterms) {
var apiKey = "dvxveCJB1QugC806d29k1cE6x23Nt64O";
var titleKeyword = "lasagna";
var url = "http://api.bigoven.com/recipes?pg=1&rpp=25&title_kw="+ searchterms + "&api_key="+apiKey;
$.ajax({
type: "GET",
dataType: 'json',
cache: false,
url: url,
success: function (data) {
alert('success');
console.log(data);
$("#results").html(data);
}
});
}
Can anyone give me instructions on how to do this?? Thank you very much.
The API is returning JSON data, not HTML. I checked the API docs, and JSONP isn't necessary.
However, when you run this code:
$('#results').html(data);
Your code is going to just put the JSON into your HTML, and that isn't going to get displayed properly. You didn't say whether console.log(data) outputs the data correctly, but I'll assume it is.
So, you'll need to transform your JSON into HTML. You can do that programmatically, or you can use a templating language. There are a number of options, including underscore, jquery, mustache and handlebars.
I recommend handlebars, but it's not a straightforward bit of code to add (the main difficulty will be loading your template, or including it in your build).
http://handlebarsjs.com/
It would depend on you which key and values you have to show to your user's and in which manner... For ex. there is even an image link, you could either show that image to your user's or could just show them the image link...
Simple <p> structure of all the key's with there value's
jQuery
$.each(data.Results, function (key, value) {
$.each(value, function (key, value) {
$("#result").append('<p>Key:-' + key + ' Value:-' + value + '</p>');
});
$("#result").append('<hr/>');
});
Your ajax is working, you just need to parse the results. To get you started:
$.ajax({
type: "GET",
dataType: 'json',
cache: false,
url: url,
success: function (data) {
// Parse the data:
var resultsString = "";
for (var i in data.Results){
console.log( data.Results[i] );
resultsString+= "<div>"+data.Results[i].Title+ " ("+data.Results[i].Cuisine+")</div>";
}
$("#results").html(resultsString);
// If you want to see the raw JSON displayed on the webpage, use this instead:
//$("#results").html( JSON.stringify(data) );
}
});
I had created a little recursive function that iterates through JSON and spits out all of the values (I subbed my output for yours in the else condition) -
function propertyTest(currentObject, key) {
for (var property in currentObject) {
if (typeof currentObject[property] === "object") {
propertyTest(currentObject[property], property);
} else {
$('#results').append(property + ' -- ' + currentObject[property] + '<br />');
}
}
}
Then I called it within your AJAX success -
$.ajax({
type: "GET",
dataType: 'json',
cache: false,
url: url,
success: function (data) {
console.log(data);
propertyTest(data); // called the function
}
});
It spits out all of the data in the JSON as seen here - http://jsfiddle.net/jayblanchard/2E9jb/3/
