I have two charts; bar chart and word cloud.
I would like word cloud to move down as I scroll down. Any ideas/examples on how to achieve this with D3.js / JavaScript?

You can control the positioning of a DOM element through a window event listener like this:
window.addEventListener("scroll", myFunc.bind(this, document.getElementById("scroller")), false);

So for every ten pixels the user scrolls, the scroller element will move one pixel.

I’ve created an animation for my website to change a certain element (for example its background colour) while scrolling using Vanilla JS. For this I have used the window.onscroll property and I trigger the animation when window.scrollY reaches a specific position, my code is:

It looks great when I am editing on my big screen resolution, but if I look at the page on my laptop, the animation gets messed up because the innerWidth and innerHeight of the screen are different. I want to trigger the animation dynamically if it reaches a certain section of the page without having to worry about the scroll position.
Does anyone have any ideas about how I can fix this?
I think using getBoundingClientRect() solves your problem.
You basically do something like this:

The rect variable now contains an Object which includes a top and a left property with values that are relative to the viewport.

I've got a custom scrollbar solution (view on CodePen).
The obvious idea is dragging the custom scrollbar should scroll the page.
Try it and see what happens... it's bizarrely janky, and the scrollbar and page scrolling will suddenly snap between points.
The scrolling process is currently in a mousemove handler:
update the scrollbar position visually
window.scrollTo(...) the new position, calculated as viewport top relative to the new scrollbar position
If I comment out the window.scrollTo(...) line, the scrollbar itself then moves perfectly smoothly and sticks with the cursor.

I presume the scrolling each mousemove is blocking the mousemove events, resulting in the sudden snaps being observed.

I finally found the answer
After far too many hours of trying everything conceivable to remedy this, I stumbled upon this identical problem: https://css-tricks.com/forums/topic/scrolltop-inexplicably-going-haywire/.
As that user eventually discovered, MouseEvent.pageY (which is what I was using to get scroll position) is
relative to the top edge of the viewport, including scroll offsets.
Therefore, the scroll movement effectively amplifies the mousemove events, causing the scrolling to accelerate exponentially as seen in the demo.
So after half a day of hacking about with this, the fix is a simple Ctrl+H... use MouseEvent.clientY instead.

Simple, I just would like to have it so when a user is dragging an item and they reach the very bottom or top of the viewport (10px or so), the page (about 3000px long) gently scrolls down or up, until they move their cursor (and thus the item being dragged) out of the region.
An item is an li tag which uses jquery to make the list items draggable. To be specific:

I currently use window.scrollBy(x=0,y=3) to scroll the page and have the variables of:
e.pageY ... provides absolute Y-coordinates of cursor on page (not relative to screen)
$.scrollTop() ... provides offset from top of page (when scroll bar is all the way up, it is 0)
$.height()... provides the height of viewable area in the user's browser/viewport
body.offsetHeight ... height of the entire page
How can I achieve this and which event best accommodates this (currently its in mouseover)?
My ideas:
use a an if/else to check if it is in top region or bottom, scroll up if e.pageY is showing it is in the top, down if e.page& is in bottom, and then calling the $('li').mouseover() event to iterate through...
Use a do while loop... this has worked moderately well actually, but is hard to stop from scrolling to far. But I am not sure how to control the iterations....

Works pretty well now, user just needs to "jiggle" the mouse when dragging items sometimes to keep scrolling, but for scrolling just with mouse position its pretty solid. Here is what I finally ended up using:

This won't work as the event only fires while you're mouse is over the li.

You need to be able to tell the position of the mouse relative to the viewport when an item is being dragged. When the users starts to drag an item attach an 'mousemove' event to the body and then in that check the mouse position and scroll when necessary.

This may not be exactly what you want, but it might help. It will auto-scroll when the mouse is over the 'border of the screen' (a user defined region). Say you have a 40px wide bar on the right of the screen, if the mouse reaches the first 1px, it will start scrolling. Each px you move into it, the speed will increase. It even has a nice easing animation.

I am writing a simple script that displays a dialog box when a user hovers over a profile picture. It dynamically determines the profile pics location on the page and then places itself to the left of it and about 100px above it. This part is working fine.
My issue arises when a profile pic is at the top of the screen and a user mouses over it. The dialog will appear but the top portion of it will be above the fold (i.e. not in the current browser window). Naturally this is not good usability and I would like it to appear on the screen.
My question is how do I know when a dialog will be off screen so I can recalculate its position on the page?
I saw this question which seems like the same as mine but unfortunately no actual solution was provided other then to link to a jQuery plugin. I am using Prototype.
Prototype already provides positions with Element.viewportOffset().
Edit, as Mathew points out document.viewport gives the rest of the information. For example,

You'll want to find the profile pic's position relative to the document (here's a good article on how, though I suspect Prototype's Element.Offset already handles this), then compare it to the body's scrollTop property to see if it's close enough to the top that it needs to have its dialog repositioned.
I am familiar with this problem, however, last time I was able to use a library (Seadragon) to get the screen dimensions and mouse position. I was also working with a fixed size overlay so no code to share with you other than general approach.
For my pop up box I decided to use the event mouse position rather than location of the div on the page. I then compared the mouse position to the known screen size, which I determined on start or resize.
