regular expression for numeric value; at most 3 decimal places - javascript

I'm trying to validate a form using regular expressions, the conditions are:
It has to be a numeric value
It CAN have up to three decimal places(0,1,2 are allowed too)
It has to be divided by a comma(,)
I already got it to work using HTML5-Patterns with this:
pattern='\d+(,\d{1,3})?'
Since patterns are not supported by IE9, I tried doing it with js:
var numPattern = /\d+(,\d{1,3})?/;
if(!numPattern.test(menge.val()))
{
checkvalidate = false;
}
Where did I go wrong?
Examples
valid: 1,234 ; 2,00 ; 5 ; 0,1
invalid: 1,2345 ; 2.00 ; 56a

You'll need to start your regex with ^ and end it with $ to make sure the entire input string/line is matched.
/^\d+(,\d{1,3})?$/
Here's a "demo" in which all your examples are valid/invalid:
https://regex101.com/r/oP5yJ4/1
(Using regex101.com to debug your regular expression patterns is often very useful)
Note that: (without ^ and $)
var pattern_without = /\d+(,\d{1,3})?/;
pattern_without.test("56a") === true; // matches, but only "56"
pattern_without.test("1,2345") === true; // matches, but only "1,234"
but: (with ^ and $)
var pattern_with = /^\d+(,\d{1,3})?$/;
pattern_with.test("56a") === false; // no match
pattern_with.test("1,2345") === false; // no match

You can use this regex:
/^\d+(?:,\d{1,3})*$/
RegEx Demo

Try this expression:
\d+(,\d{3})*([.]\d{1,3})?
Valid examples:
1,200.123
1,200.12
1,200.1
1.123
1,200,222
1,200,002

You can use the RegExp object.
var str = "123545,123";
var patt = new RegExp("/^(?:\d*\,\d{1,3}|\d+)$/");
var res = patt.test(str);
After execution, res will be true, since str matches the pattern you're looking for,

how to search and replace Single Quotes in a String in JavaScript [duplicate]

I want to check if a string contains special characters like !##$%^&*.,<>/\'";:? and return true if the string contains atleast one of those chars.
I tried with the following regex,script:
var format = /^[!##$%^&*()_+\-=\[\]{};':"\\|,.<>\/?]*$/;
if( string.match(format) ){
return true;
}else{
return false;
}
If the string contains only the special characters then it returns true , but if the string contains something else like alphanumeric chars ( !example1 , .example2 ) it returns false.
I suggest using RegExp .test() function to check for a pattern match, and the only thing you need to change is remove the start/end of line anchors (and the * quantifier is also redundant) in the regex:
var format = /[ `!##$%^&*()_+\-=\[\]{};':"\\|,.<>\/?~]/;
// ^ ^
document.write(format.test("My#string-with(some%text)") + "<br/>");
document.write(format.test("My string with spaces") + "<br/>");
document.write(format.test("MyStringContainingNoSpecialChars"));
The anchors (like ^ start of string/line, $ end od string/line and \b word boundaries) can restrict matches at specific places in a string. When using ^ the regex engine checks if the next subpattern appears right at the start of the string (or line if /m modifier is declared in the regex). Same case with $: the preceding subpattern should match right at the end of the string.
In your case, you want to check the existence of the special character from the set anywhere in the string. Even if it is only one, you want to return false. Thus, you should remove the anchors, and the quantifier *. The * quantifier would match even an empty string, thus we must remove it in order to actually check for the presence of at least 1 special character (actually, without any quantifiers we check for exactly one occurrence, same as if we were using {1} limiting quantifier).

Your regexp use ^ and $ so it tries to match the entire string. And if you want only a boolean as the result, use test instead of match.
var format = /[!##$%^&*()_+\-=\[\]{};':"\\|,.<>\/?]+/;
if(format.test(string)){
return true;
} else {
return false;
}
Wouldn't it be easier to negative-match alphanumerics instead?
return string.match(/^[^a-zA-Z0-9]+$/) ? true : false;
var specialChars = "<>#!#$%^&*()_+[]{}?:;|'\"\\,./~`-=";
var checkForSpecialChar = function(string){
for(i = 0; i < specialChars.length;i++){
if(string.indexOf(specialChars[i]) > -1){
return true
}
}
return false;
}
var str = "YourText";
if(checkForSpecialChar(str)){
alert("Not Valid");
} else {
alert("Valid");
}
Remove the characters ^ (start of string) and $ (end of string) from the regular expression.
var format = /[!##$%^&*()_+\-=\[\]{};':"\\|,.<>\/?]/;
var format = /[`!##$%^&*()_+\-=\[\]{};':"\\|,.<>\/?~]/;
// ^ ^
document.write(format.test("My #string-with(some%text)") + "<br/>");
document.write(format.test("My string with spaces") + "<br/>");
document.write(format.test("My StringContainingNoSpecialChars"));
Simple solution
let text = "12AB"
const specialChars = `/[!##$%^&*()_+\-=\[\]{};':"\\|,.<>\/?]+/;`
const isSpecialCharsPresent = specialChars.split('').some(char =>
text.includes(char)) // true if present and false if not
console.log(isSpecialCharsPresent) // false
let text = "12AB."
console.log(isSpecialCharsPresent) // true
Check if a string contains at least one password special character:
For reference: ASCII Table -- Printable Characters
Special character ranges in the ASCII table are:
Space to /
: to #
[ to `
{ to ~
Therefore, use this:
/[ -/:-#[-`{-~]/.test(string)
I just did this,
if(string.match(/\W/)){
return true; // Contains at least one special character or space
} else {
return false;
}
You can use this regex for specials chars : /\W/
I took an alternative approuch, without using REGEX, O(n) in performence:
function hasSpecialChars(str) {
const specialCharsSet = new Set("!##$%^&*()_");
for (let letter of str) {
if (specialCharsSet.has(letter)) {
return true;
}
}
return false;
}
You can try this:
regex = [\W_]
It will definitely help you.

What's the JS RegExp for this specific string?

I have a rather isolated situation in an inventory management program where our shelf locations have a specific format, which is always Letter: Number-Letter-Number, such as Y: 1-E-4. Most of us coworkers just type in "y1e4" and are done with it, but that obviously creates issues with inconsistent formats in a database. Are JS RegExp's the ideal way to automatically detect and format these alphanumeric strings? I'm slowly wrapping my head around JavaScript's Perl syntax, but what's a simple example of formatting one of these strings?
spec: detect string format of either "W: D-W-D" or "WDWD" and return "W: D-W-D"
This function will accept any format and return undefined if it doesnt match, returns the formatted string if a match does occur.
function validateInventoryCode(input) {
var regexp = /^([a-zA-Z]+)(?:\:\s*)?(\d+)-?(\w+)-?(\d+)$/
var r = regexp.exec(input);
if(r != null) {
return `${r[1]}: ${r[2]}-${r[3]}-${r[4]}`;
}
}
var possibles = ["y1e1", "y:1e1", "Y: 1r3", "y: 32e4", "1:e3e"];
possibles.forEach(function(posssiblity) {
console.log(`input(${posssiblity}), result(${validateInventoryCode(posssiblity)})`);
})
function validateInventoryCode(input) {
var regexp = /^([a-zA-Z]+)(?:\:\s*)?(\d+)-?(\w+)-?(\d+)$/
var r = regexp.exec(input);
if (r != null) {
return `${r[1]}: ${r[2]}-${r[3]}-${r[4]}`;
}
}
I understand the question as "convert LetterNumberLetterNumber to Letter: Number-Letter-Number.
You may use
/^([a-z])(\d+)([a-z])(\d+)$/i
and replace with $1: $2-$3-$4
Details:
^ - start of string
([a-z]) - Group 1 (referenced with $1 from the replacement pattern) capturing any ASCII letter (as /i makes the pattern case-insensitive)
(\d+) - Group 2 capturing 1 or more digits
([a-z]) - Group 3, a letter
(\d+) - Group 4, a number (1 or more digits)
$ - end of string.
See the regex demo.
var re = /^([a-z])(\d+)([a-z])(\d+)$/i;
var s = 'y1e2';
var result = s.replace(re, '$1: $2-$3-$4');
console.log(result);
OR - if the letters must be turned to upper case:
var re = /^([a-z])(\d+)([a-z])(\d+)$/i;
var s = 'y1e2';
var result = s.replace(re,
(m,g1,g2,g3,g4)=>`${g1.toUpperCase()}: ${g2}-${g3.toUpperCase()}-${g4}`
);
console.log(result);
this is the function to match and replace the pattern: DEMO
function findAndFormat(text){
var splittedText=text.split(' ');
for(var i=0, textLength=splittedText.length; i<textLength; i++){
var analyzed=splittedText[i].match(/[A-z]{1}\d{1}[A-z]{1}\d{1}$/);
if(analyzed){
var formattedString=analyzed[0][0].toUpperCase()+': '+analyzed[0][1]+'-'+analyzed[0][2].toUpperCase()+'-'+analyzed[0][3];
text=text.replace(splittedText[i],formattedString);
}
}
return text;
}
i think it's just as it reads:
y1e4
Letter, number, letter, number:
/([A-z][0-9][A-z][0-9])/g
And yes, it's ok to use regex in this case, like form validations and stuff like that. it's just there are some cases on which abusing of regular expressions gives you a bad performance (into intensive data processing and the like)
Example
"HelloY1E4world".replace(/([A-z][0-9][A-z][0-9])/g, ' ');
should return: "Hello world"
regxr.com always comes in handy

Extract word between '=' and '('

I have the following string
234234=AWORDHERE('sdf.'aa')
where I need to extract AWORDHERE.
Sometimes there can be space in between.
234234= AWORDHERE('sdf.'aa')
Can I do this with a regular expression?
Or should I do it manually by finding indexes?
The datasets are huge, so it's important to do it as fast as possible.
Try this regex:
\d+=\s?(\w+)\(
Check Demo
in Javascript it would like that:
var myString = "234234=AWORDHERE('sdf.'aa')";// or 234234= AWORDHERE('sdf.'aa')
var myRegexp = /\d+=\s?(\w+)\(/g;
var match = myRegexp.exec(myString);
console.log(match[1]); // AWORDHERE
You could do this at least three ways. You need to benchmark to see what's fastest.
Substring w/ indexes
function extract(from) {
var ixEq = from.indexOf("=");
var ixParen = from.indexOf("(");
return from.substring(ixEq + 1, ixParen);
}
.
Splits
function extract(from) {
var spEq = from.split("=");
var spParen = spEq[1].split("(");
return spParen[0];
}
Regex (demo)
Here is some sample regex you could use
/[^=]+=([^(]+).*/g
This says
[^=]+ - One or more character which is not an =
= - The = itself
( - creates a matching group so you can access your match in code
[^(]+ - One or more character which is not a (
) - closes the matching group
.* - Matches the rest of the line
the /g on the end tells it to perform the match on all lines.
Using look around you can search for string preceded by = and followed by ( as following.
Regex: (?<==)[A-Z ]+(?=\()
Explanation:
(?<==) checks if [A-Z ] is preceded by an =.
[A-Z ]+ matches your pattern.
(?=\() checks if matched pattern is followed by a (.
Regex101 Demo
var str = "234234= AWORDHERE('sdf.'aa')";
var regexp = /.*=\s+(\w+)\(.*\)/g;
var match = regexp.exec(str);
alert( match[1] );
I made my solution for this just a little more general than you asked for, but I don't think it takes much more time to execute. I didn't measure. If you need greater efficiency than this provides, comment and I or someone else can help you with that.
Here's what I did, using the command prompt of node:
> var s = "234234= AWORDHERE('sdf.'aa')"
undefined
> var a = s.match(/(\w+)=\s*(\w+)\s*\(.*/)
undefined
> a
[ '234234= AWORDHERE(\'sdf.\'aa\')',
'234234',
'AWORDHERE',
index: 0,
input: '234234= AWORDHERE(\'sdf.\'aa\')' ]
>
As you can see, this matches the number before the = in a[1], and it matches the AWORDHERE name as you requested in a[2]. This will work with any number (including zero) spaces before and/or after the =.

Difference between these regular expressions?

I want a regular expression that matches numbers from 1 to 100.
This works:
var regNumeric = /^(100|[1-9][0-9]|[1-9])$/;
But this does't
var regNumeric = /^100|[1-9][0-9]|[1-9]$/;
Why?
Code:
var value = '121' ;
var regNumeric = /^(100|[1-9][0-9]|[1-9])$/;
if(regNumeric.test(value)){
// Match
}
Why this works?
/^(100|[1-9][0-9]|[1-9])$/
Because of the parentheses it will apply start ^ and end $ anchors to each of the pattern separated by OR |.. which is equivalent to.. ^100$ or ^[1-9][0-9]$ or ^[1-9]$
Why this doesn't?
/^100|[1-9][0-9]|[1-9]$/
This regex is equivalent to ^100 or [1-9][0-9] or [1-9]$ (observe the anchors). So this would match unnecessary requirements like 100abc or hey13s or batman5

Javascript Remove strings in beginning and end

base on the following string
...here..
..there...
.their.here.
How can i remove the . on the beginning and end of string like the trim that removes all spaces, using javascript
the output should be
here
there
their.here
These are the reasons why the RegEx for this task is /(^\.+|\.+$)/mg:
Inside /()/ is where you write the pattern of the substring you want to find in the string:
/(ol)/ This will find the substring ol in the string.
var x = "colt".replace(/(ol)/, 'a'); will give you x == "cat";
The ^\.+|\.+$ in /()/ is separated into 2 parts by the symbol | [means or]
^\.+ and \.+$
^\.+ means to find as many . as possible at the start.
^ means at the start; \ is to escape the character; adding + behind a character means to match any string containing one or more that character
\.+$ means to find as many . as possible at the end.
$ means at the end.
The m behind /()/ is used to specify that if the string has newline or carriage return characters, the ^ and $ operators will now match against a newline boundary, instead of a string boundary.
The g behind /()/ is used to perform a global match: so it find all matches rather than stopping after the first match.
To learn more about RegEx you can check out this guide.
Try to use the following regex
var text = '...here..\n..there...\n.their.here.';
var replaced = text.replace(/(^\.+|\.+$)/mg, '');
Here is working Demo
Use Regex /(^\.+|\.+$)/mg
^ represent at start
\.+ one or many full stops
$ represents at end
so:
var text = '...here..\n..there...\n.their.here.';
alert(text.replace(/(^\.+|\.+$)/mg, ''));
Here is an non regular expression answer which utilizes String.prototype
String.prototype.strim = function(needle){
var first_pos = 0;
var last_pos = this.length-1;
//find first non needle char position
for(var i = 0; i<this.length;i++){
if(this.charAt(i) !== needle){
first_pos = (i == 0? 0:i);
break;
}
}
//find last non needle char position
for(var i = this.length-1; i>0;i--){
if(this.charAt(i) !== needle){
last_pos = (i == this.length? this.length:i+1);
break;
}
}
return this.substring(first_pos,last_pos);
}
alert("...here..".strim('.'));
alert("..there...".strim('.'))
alert(".their.here.".strim('.'))
alert("hereagain..".strim('.'))
and see it working here : http://jsfiddle.net/cettox/VQPbp/
Slightly more code-golfy, if not readable, non-regexp prototype extension:
String.prototype.strim = function(needle) {
var out = this;
while (0 === out.indexOf(needle))
out = out.substr(needle.length);
while (out.length === out.lastIndexOf(needle) + needle.length)
out = out.slice(0,out.length-needle.length);
return out;
}
var spam = "this is a string that ends with thisthis";
alert("#" + spam.strim("this") + "#");
Fiddle-ige
Use RegEx with javaScript Replace
var res = s.replace(/(^\.+|\.+$)/mg, '');
We can use replace() method to remove the unwanted string in a string
Example:
var str = '<pre>I'm big fan of Stackoverflow</pre>'
str.replace(/<pre>/g, '').replace(/<\/pre>/g, '')
console.log(str)
output:
Check rules on RULES blotter
