Optional/multiple template URL in single directive Angular JS - javascript

Can I have a option between two template URL. Something like :

such that when my http request is an error load entirely different template. What would be the best way to something like this.

ng-include is probably your friend here. A partial (hopefully syntactically correct) example:

Here's what I do to select different templates. The key is that templateUrl can be a function which accepts the element and the attributes.
In my HTML
<my-directive template="test-template.html"></my-directive>
In my Directive

I like this approach because it allows me to have a common directive for all the logic, but control from my HTML the template format to use to display the results.

Note: You do not currently have the ability to access scope variables
from the templateUrl function, since the template is requested before
the scope is initialized.
That said, the solution you were striving for was to open a totally different template if there was an error. In that case you'd want to use the $location to redirect to an error page, not simply load a different template. Or perhaps have an error handling directive in your main template which opens an error modal on any page.

AngularJS rootScope.$emit from within Directive

I have a directive for users to like (or "fave") posts in my application. Throughout my controllers I use $rootScope.$emit('name-of-function', some-id) to update user data when they like a new post, as this is reflected throughout my application. But I can't seem to use $rootScope.$emit in the directive. I receive an error
$rootScope.$emit is not a function
Presumably the $rootScope.$on event which corresponds with this command has not been called yet, so this function does not yet exist? What can be done about this? Is there a better way to arrange this?

FYI - "link" has been used in the directive because this is related to an instance of an HTML element which will be used a number of times on the page
link has the following signature, there is no need to add $rootScope injection into link function:
function link(scope, element, attrs, controller, transcludeFn) { ... }
Remove it from link and it will work.

Dynamic partial arguments in AngularJS routing

I'm working with an angularjs site and have a background with working with routes in Rails and also Laravel in php. With routes in Laravel we could dynamically create a set of routes similar to:

Here we defined series of seperate routes in Laravel which technically do look the same except for the value of city and slug.
I'm finding angularJS a bit limited in defining routes in this case. Frankly am a bit lost here.
UPDATE
I've made some modifications here - basically I set up a service which retrieves assets from my database such as in this case a list of cities and categories. I'm trying to do this:
If {slug} is in the array of categories retrieved from my API, then use my ListController and list view but if its not then instead use my SingleVenueController and single view. Here's my code at the moment but its not working :(

In the above sharedParams is a service and the getCurrentPageType just checks the url slug to decide what controller to send back - but its not really working at all :(
How about defining a single route with a paramater ?
In angularjs v1.x you can defined as many routes you want with as many params xor query

You can do it with separate routes. The idea is when user hits the main route it resolves first with the data from the backend. If the condition is met, resolve function will redirect to specific route if not it wont pass
Services in Angular cannot be injected in the configuration phase since they become available only in the run phase of an Angular application.
There is however a trick to load $http service in the config phase which you can use to load your cities/categories and set up your routes. Meanwhile, since controllers aren't registered up until the run phase, you may use the $controllerProvider to register your controllers beforehand in the configuration phase:

Note that I'm using the getTemplate and the getController methods which return the templateUrl and the relevant controller name strings respectively using an ordinary switch expression. You can choose your own approach.

Note:
While a function with the templateUrl route options property does work with setting up a custom template, but when you use a function alongside the controller property, Angular will consider it as the constructor for the controller. Therefore, returning the name of the controller in that function won't work.
As Ahmad has already pointed out in his answer, if you pass a function to controller it is considered as a constructor for the controller.
Also you can't get a service injected dynamically in config block of your app.
So what you can do is, move your sharedData service in separate app (in my code below I've used appShared as a separate app where this service is defined) and then access it using angular.injector. This way you don't have to define it as a parameter to templateUrl / controller functions.
Btw, you can't pass custom parameters to templateUrl function (ref: https://docs.angularjs.org/api/ngRoute/provider/$routeProvider)
If templateUrl is a function, it will be called with the following
parameters:
{Array.<Object>} - route parameters extracted from the current $location.path() by applying the current route
Now for the controller, use $controller to dynamically load either ListsController or SingleController based on your condition.
Once that is loaded, extend your current controller (defined by your controller function) using angular.extend so that it inherits all the properties and methods of the dynamically loaded controller.

Update UI based on change of a directive attribute in AngularJs

I am struggling with data binding in AngularJs.
I have the following piece of markup in .html file that includes the custom directive:

Note: 'some-variable' is being updated every 10 seconds(based on the associate collection and passed to template through controller).
The directive's code includes:

which throws this exception because of the brackets in attr-1(see html code above).
It works though if I use read-only access(note at sign below):

I use scope.attr-1 in directive's HTML to show its value.
The problem is that with read-only access UI is not reflecting the change in attribute change.
I've found solution with $parse or $eval(couldn't make them work tho). Is there a better one there?
You'll need only two-way binding and I think $parse or $eval is not needed.
Please have a look at the demo below or in this fiddle.
It uses $interval to simulate your updating but the update can also come from other sources e.g. web socket or ajax request.
I'm using controllerAs and bindToController syntax (AngularJs version 1.4 or newer required) but the same is also possible with just an isolated scope. See guide in angular docs.
The $watch in the controller of the directive is only to show how the directive can detect that the data have changed.

Writing test for angular directive with dynamic template

Here is the directive:

There is not much to test here. But as a feel good test you can just load a template into cache and do a test if specific element has been rendered or not as a feel good test.

On a different note your directive can break if there is no template provided, it is required to return a template from templateurl function. Also you can make this simple directive more generic as well.

How ever, there is nothing to be tested here because you will just end up testing angular's templateUrl function evaluation.

$scope.item in directive is undefined

I have a problem with my directive and controller. The variable item in scope is undefined in directive, even though I passed it in html. This is my code:

Although it seems to work just fine with latest Angular stable http://plnkr.co/edit/6oXDIF6P04FXZB335voR?p=preview maybe you are trying to use templateUrl thats pointing to somewhere it doesn't exist.
Another thing, use primitives only when strictly needed. In case you ever need to modify value of item, you won't be able to do so since you are using a primitive. Plus, if you need "more info" to go inside your isolated scopes, and to avoid attribute soup (attr-this="that", attr-that="boop", my-otherstuff="anotheritem.member", etc) you can pass the two-way bind of an object that handle more data.
Or if you need to share state through multiple controllers, directives, etc, use a service instead and use dependency injection, and there's no need to pass in objects/primitives to your isolated scope, and you can assure state, and that's best practice "the Angular way".

This leads me to believe it could be a scope issue. So try encapsulating the controller scope variable in a container:
