Chrome extension not finding current tab? - javascript

In my code, I want to check if on the page you are on, if certain requirements are met with the url, do something
It is saying it cannot get the toLowerCase of undefined
this is my code, thanks
Also, I do have tab permissions in the manifest
This file runs in the background, I want it to execute for every page you open
var names = ['hunter5deer', 'pielovingcat', '199MS', 'harrdy']
$(function() {
for (i=0;i<names.length;i++) {
var currentPage;
chrome.tabs.getSelected(null,function(tab) {
currentPage = tab.url;
});
var page;
if (currentPage.toLowerCase().indexOf("item?id=") > -1) {
page = 'seller';
name(page, names[i]);
}
else if (currentPage.toLowerCase().indexOf("showpost.aspx?postid=") > -1) {
page = 'forum';
name(page, names[i]);
}
else if (currentPage.toLowerCase().indexOf("user.aspx?") > -1) {
page = 'profile'
name(page, names[i]);
}
}
});

chrome.tabs.getSelected executes asynchronously so the if statement was running before currentPage was set. Move the if statement inside the callback.
var names = ['hunter5deer', 'pielovingcat', '199MS', 'harrdy']
$(function() {
for (i=0;i<names.length;i++) {
chrome.tabs.getSelected(null,function(tab) {
var currentPage = tab.url;
var page;
if (currentPage.toLowerCase().indexOf("item?id=") > -1) {
page = 'seller';
name(page, names[i]);
}
else if (currentPage.toLowerCase().indexOf("showpost.aspx?postid=") > -1) {
page = 'forum';
name(page, names[i]);
}
else if (currentPage.toLowerCase().indexOf("user.aspx?") > -1) {
page = 'profile'
name(page, names[i]);
}
});
}
});

How to make window.open popup as a dialog

I have this button here actual It is made of aspx.net html. When I click this button I wanted to popup a modal. Making modal is easy to do, but in my case I wanted to call another web page(Printer.aspx) of my server.
<td>
<Button ID="btnPrint" runat="server" OnClick="Printer_Click" >Printer</Button>
</td>
Here is js code. With this code I was able to open new window as a popup but I wanted to call Printer.aspx in my show modaldiv
//Printer button click function
function Printer_OnClientClick(){
var returnValue = showPopUp('Printer.aspx', 700, 500);
if (returnValue != null) {
return true;
}
return false;
}
//showPopUp function
function showPopUp(url,winName,w,h,scroll, clientID){
LeftPosition = (screen.width) ? (screen.width-w)/2 : 0;
TopPosition = (screen.height) ? (screen.height-h)/2 : 0;
settings ='height='+h+',width='+w+',top='+TopPosition+',left='+LeftPosition+',scrollbars='+scroll+',resizable'
if (url.indexOf("?") == -1)
{
url = url + "?";
}else {
url = url + "&";
}
url = url + "PageId=" + $('#hiddenPageDataId').val();
var timstamp= new Date().getTime();
url = url + "&timstamp=" + timstamp;
try {
popupWindow = window.open(url,winName,settings) // This will open new tab
} catch(e) {
popupWindow = null;
}
if (clientID== null){
return popupWindow;
} else {
if (popupWindow != null) {
$('#' + clientID).val(popupWindow);
}
return false;
}
}
Please do not get confused this Js is which I made to do window.open(), but now I wanted to call the next page in modal iframe.
I also have another js which I discovered in Google here it is:
$(document).ready(function () {
$(".PrinterSelect").click(function () {
$("#iFrameDialog").attr('src', $(this).attr("href"));
$("#divDialog").dialog({
width: 400,
height: 450,
modal: true,
close: function () {
$("#iFrameDialog").attr('src', "about:blank");
}
});
return false;
});
});
This will work in html page, but I wanted to do it with an aspx page.

Set selected navigation option using window.location

I have a theme that sets the selected left navigation option based on what URL you are visiting. However, it breaks if the is a variable attached to the URL, for example www.test.com/abc.aspx?delete=1. The URL www.test.com/abc.aspx works fine and sets the link ABC to active.
I have tried to modify the code to cut off everything after and including ?, but it won't work as intended (nothing in the NAV is selected).
ORIGINAL CODE:
$(function () {
var url = window.location;
var element = $('ul#sidebarnav a').filter(function () {
return this.href == url;
}).addClass('active').parent().addClass('active');
while (true) {
if (element.is('li')) {
element = element.parent().addClass('in').parent().addClass('active');
}
else {
break;
}
}
});
MY EDITED CODE:
$(function () {
var url = window.location.toString();
var url_fix = url.split('?');
var element = $('ul#sidebarnav a').filter(function () {
return this.href == url_fix[0];
}).addClass('active').parent().addClass('active');
while (true) {
if (element.is('li')) {
element = element.parent().addClass('in').parent().addClass('active');
}
else {
break;
}
}
});
I think it is the line with "return this.href == url_fix[0];" that is the culprit.
SOLUTION (what I came up with after reading the comments, thanks guys):
$(function () {
var url = location.href.split("/").slice(-1).toString();
var url_fix = url.split('?');
var element = $('ul#sidebarnav a').filter(function () {
return $(this).attr("href") == url_fix[0];
}).addClass('active').parent().addClass('active');
while (true) {
if (element.is('li')) {
element = element.parent().addClass('in').parent().addClass('active');
}
else {
break;
}
}
});
Try comparing pathnames instead.
var element = $('ul#sidebarnav a').filter(function () {
return this.pathname == location.pathname;
}).addClass('active').parent().addClass('active');
For example on this page location.pathname returns:
"/questions/48234042/set-selected-navigation-option-using-window-locaiton/48234196"
and does not include location.hash or location.search
I used the answer by #vbguyny to solve the issue. Had to add location.href.split("/").slice(-1).toString(); to get the actual page name, but after that it worked fine. Thanks!

Detect URL if it is already opened and throw pop-up : HTML+JS [duplicate]

I want to check with JavaScript if the user has already opened my website in another tab in their browser.
It seems I cannot do that with pagevisibility...
The only way I see is to use WebSocket based on a session cookie, and check if the client has more than one socket. But by this way, from current tab, I have to ask my server if this user has a tab opened right next to their current browser tab. It is a little far-fetched!
Maybe with localstorage?
The shorter version with localStorage and Storage listener
<script type="text/javascript">
// Broadcast that you're opening a page.
localStorage.openpages = Date.now();
var onLocalStorageEvent = function(e){
if(e.key == "openpages"){
// Listen if anybody else is opening the same page!
localStorage.page_available = Date.now();
}
if(e.key == "page_available"){
alert("One more page already open");
}
};
window.addEventListener('storage', onLocalStorageEvent, false);
</script>
Update:
Works on page crash as well.

Live demo
Using local storage I created a simple demo that should accomplish what your looking to do. Basically, it simply maintains a count of currently opened windows. When the window is closed the unload events fire and remove it from the total window count.
When you first look at it, you may think there's more going on than there really is. Most of it was a shotty attempt to add logic into who was the "main" window, and who should take over as the "main" window as you closed children. (Hence the setTimeout calls to recheck if it should be promoted to a main window) After some head scratching, I decided it would take too much time to implement and was outside the scope of this question. However, if you have two windows open (Main, and Child) and you close the Main, the child will be promoted to a main.
For the most part you should be able to get the general idea of whats going on and use it for your own implementation.
See it all in action here:
http://jsbin.com/mipanuro/1/edit
Oh yeah, to actually see it in action... Open the link in multiple windows. :)
Update:
I've made the necessary changes to have the the local storage maintain the "main" window. As you close tabs child windows can then become promoted to a main window. There are two ways to control the "main" window state through a parameter passed to the constructor of WindowStateManager. This implementation is much nicer than my previous attempt.
JavaScript:
// noprotect
var statusWindow = document.getElementById('status');
(function (win)
{
//Private variables
var _LOCALSTORAGE_KEY = 'WINDOW_VALIDATION';
var RECHECK_WINDOW_DELAY_MS = 100;
var _initialized = false;
var _isMainWindow = false;
var _unloaded = false;
var _windowArray;
var _windowId;
var _isNewWindowPromotedToMain = false;
var _onWindowUpdated;
function WindowStateManager(isNewWindowPromotedToMain, onWindowUpdated)
{
//this.resetWindows();
_onWindowUpdated = onWindowUpdated;
_isNewWindowPromotedToMain = isNewWindowPromotedToMain;
_windowId = Date.now().toString();
bindUnload();
determineWindowState.call(this);
_initialized = true;
_onWindowUpdated.call(this);
}
//Determine the state of the window
//If its a main or child window
function determineWindowState()
{
var self = this;
var _previousState = _isMainWindow;
_windowArray = localStorage.getItem(_LOCALSTORAGE_KEY);
if (_windowArray === null || _windowArray === "NaN")
{
_windowArray = [];
}
else
{
_windowArray = JSON.parse(_windowArray);
}
if (_initialized)
{
//Determine if this window should be promoted
if (_windowArray.length <= 1 ||
(_isNewWindowPromotedToMain ? _windowArray[_windowArray.length - 1] : _windowArray[0]) === _windowId)
{
_isMainWindow = true;
}
else
{
_isMainWindow = false;
}
}
else
{
if (_windowArray.length === 0)
{
_isMainWindow = true;
_windowArray[0] = _windowId;
localStorage.setItem(_LOCALSTORAGE_KEY, JSON.stringify(_windowArray));
}
else
{
_isMainWindow = false;
_windowArray.push(_windowId);
localStorage.setItem(_LOCALSTORAGE_KEY, JSON.stringify(_windowArray));
}
}
//If the window state has been updated invoke callback
if (_previousState !== _isMainWindow)
{
_onWindowUpdated.call(this);
}
//Perform a recheck of the window on a delay
setTimeout(function()
{
determineWindowState.call(self);
}, RECHECK_WINDOW_DELAY_MS);
}
//Remove the window from the global count
function removeWindow()

(2021) You can use BroadcastChannel to communicate between tabs of the same origin.
For example, put the following at the top level of your js code, then test by opening 2 tabs:
const bc = new BroadcastChannel("my-awesome-site");
bc.onmessage = (event) => {
if (event.data === `Am I the first?`) {
bc.postMessage(`No you're not.`);
alert(`Another tab of this site just got opened`);
}
if (event.data === `No you're not.`) {
alert(`An instance of this site is already running`);
}
};
bc.postMessage(`Am I the first?`);
I know it is late, but maybe help someone
This snippet of code, will detect how many tabs are open and how many are active (visible) and if none of tabs is active, it will choose last opened tab, as active one.
This code will handle windows/tab crash too and it will refresh the count at crash.
Because localStorage is not supported on Stack Overflow currently, please test here.

Navigating to Blacklisted URL's and Canceling Them

I need to write a Firefox extension that creates a blacklist and whitelist of URL's, and checks to make sure the user wants to navigate to them whenever the user attempts to do so. I'm doing this using a main script and a content script that I attach to every page (using PageMod); I attached a listener using jQuery to every link (with the tag "a") which executes a function using window.onbeforeunload. I have two questions:
How would I prompt/ask the user if they actually did want to go to the site?
How would I stop the browser from navigating to the site if the user decided not to?
Right now my code passes messages between the two scripts in order to accomplish my goal; as far as I can tell, I can only use "document" in the content script, and save the blacklist/whitelist in the main script. I'm using simple-storage to save my lists, and the port module to pass messages between the scripts.
For question 1, I've attempted using confirm(message) to get a positive/negative response from the user, but the popup either doesn't show up or shows up for a split second then gets automatically answered with a negative response. When I look in my console's error messages, I see a "prompt aborted by user" error.
For question 2, I've already tried using event.preventDefault() by passing the click event to the function (this worked, I think). Is there a better way to do this? I've seen people using window.location = "", et cetera to do this.
Anyways, the code is below:
MAIN.JS
var ss = require("sdk/simple-storage");
exports.main = function() {
if (!ss.storage.blacklist) {
ss.storage.blacklist = [];}
if (!ss.storage.whitelist) {
ss.storage.whitelist = [];}
var data = require("sdk/self").data;
var pageMod = require("sdk/page-mod");
pageMod.PageMod({
include: "*",
contentScriptFile: [data.url("jquery-1.10.2.min.js"),data.url("secChk.js")],
onAttach: function(worker) {
function whiteCNTD(str) {
for (var index = 0; index < ss.storage.whitelist.length; index++) {
if (ss.storage.whitelist[index] == str) {
return index;
}
}
return -1;
}
function blackCNTD(str) {
for (var index = 0; index < ss.storage.blacklist.length; index++) {
if (ss.storage.blacklist[index] == str) {
return index;
}
}
return -1;
}
function checkLists(URL) {
if (whiteCNTD(URL) == -1) {
if (blackCNTD(URL) != -1) {
var bool = false;
worker.port.emit("navq", "Do you want to go to this link and add it to the whitelist?");
worker.port.on("yes", function() {
bool = true;
});
worker.port.on("no", function() {
bool = false;
});
if (bool == true) {
ss.storage.blacklist.splice(index, 1);
ss.storage.whitelist.push(URL);
return true;
}
else {
return false;
}
}
else {
var bool = false;
worker.port.emit("safeq", "Is this a safe site?");
worker.port.on("yes", function() {
bool = true;
});
worker.port.on("no", function() {
bool = false;
});
if (bool == true) {
ss.storage.whitelist.push(URL);
return true;
}
else {
ss.storage.blacklist.push(URL);
return false;
}
}
}
return true;
}
worker.port.on("newURL", function(URL) {
var s = "";
s = URL;
if (checkLists(s)) {
worker.port.emit("good", s);
} else if (!checkLists(s)) {
worker.port.emit("bad", s);
}
});
}
});
}

Go To Anchor on Load ( if else statement)

Hi I have a page that navigates using anchors. On load the index page (A) needs to jump to anchor. Fine I can do this with on load function but coming back to the page A from page B I want to jump to a different anchor. I have this working:
<!-- go to Anchor -->
<script type="text/javascript">
function goToAnchor() {
var urllocation = location.href;
if(urllocation.indexOf("#top") > -1){
window.location.hash="top";
} else {
window.location.hash="middle";
}
}
</script>
#middle is the anchor to use when coming from a link that contains no anchor (or from typing the address into the url bar). I want to add three more 'if's'. I am fairly new at js so bear with me if I am doing something silly. I tried this:
function goToAnchor() {
var urllocation = location.href;
if(urllocation.indexOf("#right") > -1){
window.location.hash="right";
} else {
window.location.hash="middle";
}
if(urllocation.indexOf("#bottom") > -1){
window.location.hash="bottom";
} else {
window.location.hash="middle";
}
if(urllocation.indexOf("#left") > -1){
window.location.hash="left";
} else {
window.location.hash="middle";
}
But not joy, the js breaks and no longer goes to #middle on page load.
I tried a wild card approach:
function goToAnchor() {
var urllocation = location.href;
if(urllocation.indexOf("#.") > -1){
window.location.hash=".";
} else {
window.location.hash="middle";
}
}
Again, no joy.
Any help please.. thanks kindly
I am not quite sure I understand the effect you are trying to achieve (since window.location.hash should already contain the hash part of your url), but your code should probably rather be
function goToAnchor() {
var urllocation = location.href;
if (urllocation.indexOf("#right") > -1) {
window.location.hash = "right";
} else if (urllocation.indexOf("#bottom") > -1) {
window.location.hash = "bottom";
} else if(urllocation.indexOf("#left") > -1) {
window.location.hash = "left";
} else {
window.location.hash = "middle";
}
}
I am also guessing that your 'wild card' approach is meant to use regular expressions:
function goToAnchor() {
var urllocation = location.href;
var hashMatch = urllocation.match(/#(.*)/)
if (hashMatch){
window.location.hash = hashMatch[1];
} else {
window.location.hash = "middle";
}
}
Again, I don't quite see what effect this code should have, since window.location.hash will probably have the same value before and after the assignment.
If you just want to go back to the hash in the URL, have you tried something like this?
var hash = window.location.hash || "middle"; //Get current hash or default to "middle" if no hash is currently set
window.location.hash = +new Date() + ""; //Remove the hash and set it to some random value
window.location.hash = hash; //Set to the old hash
