I am using Fancybox 2, and I'm a javascript (and the jquery library) newb.
I want to prevent the popup from firing when the user agent is 'ipad.'
I just cannot see why the following does not work:
The popup is prevented from firing a second time by a cookie that's also dropped when the popup fires, and that works fine.

How to identify a browser close event in javascript [duplicate]

I want to capture the browser window/tab close event.
I have tried the following with jQuery:

But it works on form submission as well, which is not what I want. I want an event that triggers only when the user closes the window.
The beforeunload event fires whenever the user leaves your page for any reason.
For example, it will be fired if the user submits a form, clicks a link, closes the window (or tab), or goes to a new page using the address bar, search box, or a bookmark.
You could exclude form submissions and hyperlinks (except from other frames) with the following code:

The live method doesn't work with the submit event, so if you add a new form, you'll need to bind the handler to it as well.
Note that if a different event handler cancels the submit or navigation, you will lose the confirmation prompt if the window is actually closed later. You could fix that by recording the time in the submit and click events, and checking if the beforeunload happens more than a couple of seconds later.
Maybe just unbind the beforeunload event handler within the form's submit event handler:

How long does the browser take to finally shut your page down?
Whenever an user closes the page (x button or CTRL + W), the browser executes the given beforeunload code, but not indefinitely. The only exception is the confirmation box (return 'Do you really want to close?) which will wait until for the user's response.
Chrome: 2 seconds.
Firefox: ∞ (or double click, or force on close)
Edge: ∞ (or double click)
Explorer 11: 0 seconds.
Safari: TODO

I used Slaks answer but that wasn't working as is, since the onbeforeunload returnValue is parsed as a string and then displayed in the confirmations box of the browser. So the value true was displayed, like "true".
Just using return worked.

Perhaps you could handle OnSubmit and set a flag that you later check in your OnBeforeUnload handler.
Unfortunately, whether it is a reload, new page redirect, or browser close the event will be triggered. An alternative is catch the id triggering the event and if it is form dont trigger any function and if it is not the id of the form then do what you want to do when the page closes. I am not sure if that is also possible directly and is tedious.
You can do some small things before the customer closes the tab. javascript detect browser close tab/close browser but if your list of actions are big and the tab closes before it is finished you are helpless. You can try it but with my experience donot depend on it.

If your form submission takes them to another page (as I assume it does, hence the triggering of beforeunload), you could try to change your form submission to an ajax call. This way, they won't leave your page when they submit the form and you can use your beforeunload binding code as you wish.
As of jQuery 1.7, the .live() method is deprecated. Use .on() to attach event handlers. Users of older versions of jQuery should use .delegate() in preference to .live()

My Issue: The 'onbeforeunload' event would only be triggered if there were odd number of submits(clicks). I had a combination of solutions from similar threads in SO to have my solution work. well my code will speak.

onbeforeunload function having serious issue

I am using native.history.js to put a customised URL in the back button.
The script works fine. Now the issue is I want to make a page redirect when the refresh button is clicked; so i modified the script like this:

Issue is, the beforeunload function seems not working.
What is the problem I can't fin?.
If I am clicking the back button, the page is taking to the desired page, so it works fine.
All I want is that, somehow the page refresh must work as I anticipated.

How to Detect Browser Back Button event - Cross Browser

How do you definitively detect whether or not the user has pressed the back button in the browser?
How do you enforce the use of an in-page back button inside a single page web application using a #URL system?
Why on earth don't browser back buttons fire their own events!?
(Note: As per Sharky's feedback, I've included code to detect backspaces)
So, I've seen these questions frequently on SO, and have recently run into the issue of controlling back button functionality myself. After a few days of searching for the best solution for my application (Single-Page with Hash Navigation), I've come up with a simple, cross-browser, library-less system for detecting the back button.
Most people recommend using:
window.onhashchange = function() {

However, this function will also be called when a user uses on in-page element that changes the location hash. Not the best user experience when your user clicks and the page goes backwards or forwards.
To give you a general outline of my system, I'm filling up an array with previous hashes as my user moves through the interface. It looks something like this:

Pretty straight forward. I do this to ensure cross-browser support, as well as support for older browsers. Simply pass the new hash to the function, and it'll store it for you and then change the hash (which is then put into the browser's history).
I also utilise an in-page back button that moves the user between pages using the lasthash array. It looks like this:

So this will move the user back to the last hash, and remove that last hash from the array (I have no forward button right now).
So. How do I detect whether or not a user has used my in-page back button, or the browser button?
At first I looked at window.onbeforeunload, but to no avail - that is only called if the user is going to change pages. This does not happen in a single-page-application using hash navigation.
So, after some more digging, I saw recommendations for trying to set a flag variable. The issue with this in my case, is that I would try to set it, but as everything is asynchronous, it wouldn't always be set in time for the if statement in the hash change. .onMouseDown wasn't always called in click, and adding it to an onclick wouldn't ever trigger it fast enough.
This is when I started to look at the difference between document, and window. My final solution was to set the flag using document.onmouseover, and disable it using document.onmouseleave.
What happens is that while the user's mouse is inside the document area (read: the rendered page, but excluding the browser frame), my boolean is set to true. As soon as the mouse leaves the document area, the boolean flips to false.
This way, I can change my window.onhashchange to:

You'll note the check for #undefined. This is because if there is no history available in my array, it returns undefined. I use this to ask the user if they want to leave using a window.onbeforeunload event.

The popstate event is fired each time when the current history entry changes (user navigates to a new state). That happens when user clicks on browser's Back/Forward buttons or when history.back(), history.forward(), history.go() methods are programatically called.
The event.state is property of the event is equal to the history state object.
For jQuery syntax, wrap it around (to add even listener after document is ready):

It's working with Chrome, Firefox and Safari.
I had been struggling with this requirement for quite a while and took some of the solutions above to implement it. However, I stumbled upon an observation and it seems to work across Chrome, Firefox and Safari browsers + Android and iPhone
On page load:

In javascript, navigation type 2 means browser's back or forward button clicked and the browser is actually taking content from cache.

Correct answer is already there to answer the question. I want to mention new JavaScript API PerformanceNavigationTiming, it's replacing deprecated performance.navigation.
Following code will log in console "back_forward" if user landed on your page using back or forward button. Take a look at compatibility table before using it in your project.

Here's my take at it. The assumption is, when the URL changes but there has no click within the document detected, it's a browser back (yes, or forward). A users click is reset after 2 seconds to make this work on pages that load content via Ajax:

This works for Chrome and IE and not FireFox. Still working to get FireFox right. Any easy way on detecting Browser back/forward button click are welcome, not particularly in JQuery but also AngularJS or plain Javascript.
I solved it by keeping track of the original event that triggered the hashchange (be it a swipe, a click or a wheel), so that the event wouldn't be mistaken for a simple landing-on-page, and using an additional flag in each of my event bindings. The browser won't set the flag again to false when hitting the back button:

The above code worked for me. On mobile browsers, when the user clicked on the back button, we wanted to restore the page state as per his previous visit.

Was looking for a solution for this issue and put together a simple skeleton test html based on a few answers here and the MDN Web Doc pages for History.pushState() and WindowEventHandlers.onpopstate.
The following HTML and JavaScript is easy enough to copy and paste and test.
Works with back and forward browser buttons, shortcut keys, adds a change to the URL (which is important in some cases).
Simply enough to add to existing code key points and should be expandable too.

browser will emit popstate event if you navigate through your app with calling
window.history.pushState({},'','/to')
If you manually enter the addresses into the address bar and click on the back button, popstate event will NOT be fired.
If you navigate in your app with this simplified function

onbeforeunload and onunload getting one to work after the other

I am having some trouble with the on before unload and the unload method. I thought i set the code right in terms of the onload method only firing up after the confirm method for onbeforeunload was set a true. but sadly that isn't the case, what is happening is the unload method is starting even if the onbeforeunload method is set to false and the person wants to stay at the website. Here is the code I am working on it has changed a lot since I started hope its okay. I am sure it isn't since its not working the way I want it to.

onbeforeunload does not work like you think it does. You can return a string from the handler, which will prompt a messsage, or undefined which will do nothing.

prevent hashchange on back button

I have an application which uses backbone hash routing. When the page reloads I use the onbeforeunload event to tell the user that there are unsaved changes and prevent the page load. This does not work on hash change; so if the user presses back the dialog does not tell them there are changes pending and just goes back.
Is there anyway to detect the hash change and prevent it happening? something like onbeforehashchange
Nope, you can detect the hashchange as it happens with something like below, but you can't really detect it before it happens. If you need the hash before it changes you can just store it somewhere.

You can't really detect the back button either, and if it does'nt trigger a reload, onbeforeunload won't work either.
If this functionality is essential, you should consider trying the haschange plugin or the history plugin, as one of those would make this a lot easier, and let you control the browser history and back/forth.
I ended up creating a function in my router. This is run before each route and puts up a jquery ui dialog and waits for a reply to run the route. This is quite messy code a I stripped out the application specific stuff.
