I have a page where a user can edit the contents of an email that is sent out (the template).
Here is a look at what my page is like:
The Code:
<a name="tag" data-toggle="tooltip" tag="<<SubmitterFirst>>" title="The first name of the employee submitting the nomination"><<SubmitterFirst>></a>
...
$('[name=tag]').click(function(){
var caretPos = document.getElementById("templateContent").selectionStart,
currentTemplate = $('#templateContent').val(),
theTag = $(this).attr('tag');
$("#templateContent").empty().val(currentTemplate.substring(0, caretPos) + theTag + currentTemplate.substring(caretPos));
$("#templateContent").focus();
});
This seems to work fine in firefox with the adding of the tag at the cursor but when I do it in IE, it duplicates the whole template at the position.
I think the issue is happening here where its putting the content of the template back after adding the tag:
+ theTag + currentTemplate.substring(caretPos)
Any suggestions of how I can get this to work in IE or another suggestion?
See this jsFiddle for an example:
http://jsfiddle.net/cTzzs/
I have also tried the suggestions from the similar question here Inserting a text where cursor is using Javascript/jquery but none of them worked in IE8.
Here is an updated fiddle of another attempt. Works in FF but not IE8;
http://jsfiddle.net/qBWn7/
In ie8, it places the tag anywhere within the textarea, not where the cursor is.

This question solved my answer: Inserting text after cursor position in text areŠ° which links to the jsfiddle of http://jsfiddle.net/rmDzu/2/

I'm working on a full-stack project that is somehow loading inconsistent CSS styles on my anchor elements. Using Javascript I am doing something like the following:
recordData.forEach(record => {
let a = help.createElement('a');
let text = record.jobTitle + " (" + record.deptName + ", " + record.subDeptName + ")-" + record.email;
a.textContent = text;
a.href = `/frontend/contractorForm/contractorForm.html`;
a.addEventListener('click', function(event) {
sessionStorage.clear();
sessionStorage.setItem('record', JSON.stringify(record));
}, false);
parent.appendChild(a);
}
The idea of this was that although I have one single HTML form "template" created, I can populate the values inside contractorForm.html through values stored in my sessionStorage.
Below are my anchor tag frontend views and I also attached images of what happens when I click on other ones. The problem with this is that when I click on my anchor tags on the front end, this is what I get.
My CSS for contractorForm.html is basically display:flex; justify-content:center. But as shown in the images, only the first anchor link works.
Things I've checked and verified: CSS page does load when looking at Devtools, disabling and clearing cache, attaching ?version={random number} onto the .html href, changing style on devtools to see if it works (and it does), changing the background color (it works perfectly), loading my CSS code after bootstrap link, checking paths and links (all correct)
The only issue here is that my display: flex is simple just not working. Any help or ideas will be appreciated! Thank you!

first-anchortag-click-view
second-anchortag-click-view
Fixed it - if you have CSS issues, make sure you are referring correctly to the parent.
My CSS looked like this before:
#contractor-form-section {
width: 50rem;
}
#contractor-form is wrapping just the form element, and the way how my DOM structure looked like was something like this:
<body>
<div id="contractor-form-border">
<section id="contractor-form-section">
<h1>...</h1>
<form>
</form>
</section>
</div>
</body>
Essentially, my CSS was referring to #contractor-form-section rather than #contractor-form-border. Switching to that basically fixed the issue!
The title is a little bland but my problem is explained below.
At the moment I currently have a live search:
This does what I want it to do, but of course, that's only possible with a little bit of JS.
Now when you click one of the options it gives you from your search it'd usually take you to a link, but I added the below JS so that it removes all HTML code from it and it appends the selected username from the drop down into a text box.
<script type="text/javascript">
$(document).ready(function(){
$("#livesearch").click(function(){
var value = $(this).html();
var input = $('#append_value');
var content = value;
var text = $(content).text(); //removes all HTML
input.val(text);
});
});
</script>
Now, this is all perfect and everything but there's a problem. When you select one option from the drop down it appends both options to the text box:
Now, this may have something to do with the code above, but I just want whichever option the user has selected to be appended to the text box.
So, for example, I search for the battlefield and I get a result of battlefield1 and battlefield2. If the user selected battlefield2 I want battlefield2 to be placed in the textbox, and vice versa.
I've been trying to do this since 1pm EST so you can trust me when I say I've looked plenty of times for a solution.
Thank you in advance for your help. :)
Edit:
What I'm doing the search with (yes I realize SQL is deprecated):
index.html
<script type="text/javascript">
function lightbg_clr() {
$('#qu').val("");
$('#textbox-clr').text("");
$('#search-layer').css({"width":"auto","height":"auto"});
$('#livesearch').css({"display":"none"});
$("#qu").focus();
};
function fx(str) {
var s1=document.getElementById("qu").value;
var xmlhttps;
if (str.length==0) {
document.getElementById("livesearch").innerHTML="";
document.getElementById("livesearch").style.border="0px";
document.getElementById("livesearch").style.display="block";
$('#textbox-clr').text("");
return;
}
if (window.XMLHttpRequest) {// code for IE7+, Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Safari
xmlhttps=new XMLHttpRequest();
} else {// code for IE6, IE5
xmlhttps=new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTPS");
}
xmlhttps.onreadystatechange=function() {
if (xmlhttps.readyState==4 && xmlhttps.status==200) {
document.getElementById("livesearch").innerHTML=xmlhttps.responseText;
document.getElementById("livesearch").style.display="block";
$('#textbox-clr').text("X");
}
}
xmlhttps.open("GET","scripts/search_friends.php?n="+s1,true);
xmlhttps.send();
}
</script>
<input type="text" onKeyUp="fx(this.value)" autocomplete="off" name="qu" id="qu" class="form-control" placeholder="Name of the person or group">
<div class="list-group" id="livesearch"></div>
<input type="text" id="append_valueq">
<script type="text/javascript">
$(document).ready(function(){
$("#livesearch").click(function(){
var value = $(this).val();
var input = $('#append_valueq');
var content = value;
var text = $(content).text();
input.val(text);
});
});
</script>
search_friends.php
<?php
include('../Connections/ls.php'); //script to connect to DB
$s1=$_REQUEST["n"];
$select_query="SELECT * FROM users WHERE Username LIKE '%".$s1."%'";
$sql=mysql_query($select_query) or die (mysql_error());
$s="";
while($row=mysql_fetch_array($sql))
{
$s=$s."
<a href='javascript:void(0)'>".$row['Username']."</a>
" ;
}
echo $s;
?>
This ultimately gives me the result you see in the first image.
I'm realizing now that the problem I'm having is the fact that div has an id of livesearch (<div class="list-group" id="livesearch"></div>), so it's selecting the whole div instead of the actual options in the dropdown...
Try using .val() instead of html() while fetching the value.
There is actually a really simple way to do this.
Since you haven't provided your HTML code, I'll show what I would have done.
You can get the value of the click with:
document.getElementById("dropdown").value();
Make sure you don't include the hashtag/pound sign in the id.
Then, you can apply this value, let's say you call it val, this way:
document.getElementById("textbox").value = val
I've created a JSFiddle that kind-of shows the concept. See if you can get it to work with your own code: https://jsfiddle.net/1j4m1ekc/7/
If the problem persists, just let me know. I'd also like to see your html.
I don't need a solution right away for this as I've found another alternative to do what I want to do, but it would be greatly appreciated in case someone else from the Stackoverflow community has a question similar to this and need a solution. The solution I found is below.
This is still considered a live search but, I created a scrollable container and listed all of the users in that container, so it now looks like this.
Now from that container I found a script online that will filter out any and all users that do not match the input from the search box. The script I found is from here: Live Search and if you want to take a look at a demo as to how the script works, View Demo. So now when I enter a search term into the text box it looks like this
This may not be the greatest solution but it works for me and does what I want it to do. Maybe it'll work for you as well :)
So i'm working on a chat application and i want to add smileys. So i used two html pages. the first one contain the text area when we wright the messages and an iframe that references the second html page.
<div class="col-12">
<textarea class="col-12 row-12 var_MessageInput" id="textmsg" placeholder="Write a reply..."></textarea>
</div>
in the second html page i have smiley images
<img src="../../../images/sad_smile.gif" onclick="insertSmiley('sad');"/>
<img src="../../../images/angel_smile.gif" onclick="insertSmiley('angel');"/>
<img src="../../../images/happy_smile.gif" onclick="insetSmiley('happy');" />
So i want that when i click at a smiley image that a text got inserted in my text area so i used the following script
function insertSmiley(smiley) {
var currentText = document.getElementById("textmsg");
var smileyWithPadding = " " + smiley + " ";
currentText.value += smileyWithPadding;
currentText.focus();
}
But it doens't work :( i thought the problem might be in document.getElementById since it's another html page but i have no idea how to solve it.
Thanks a lot
Have you included the <script src="Scripts_Chatapp/emoticone.js"></script> in iframe too? If yes, remove the script reference from iFrame.
Move the script reference <script src="Scripts_Chatapp/emoticone.js"></script> at top of page with other script tags.
Change the onclick="insertSmiley('sad');" TO onclick="parent.insertSmiley('sad');".
This will call the parent function and make changes on that page, since element exists on parent.
You have one typo in onclick="insetSmiley('happy');" it should be onclick="insertSmiley('happy');". I checked it and it works for me.
In your JS code, use:
window.location = "second_HTML_Page.html" ;
The problem is that when the function is triggered within the iFrame, the scopes become complicated.
A solution would be to make the function global by defining it at the window level. And then when the function is to be triggered inside the iFrame, it can call the function of the iFrame's parent (the main window).
Example Fiddle: http://jsfiddle.net/e37rrtb1/2/
I have a page with 3 DIV's on them, one with a header, one with a selection-list and the third will get filled with data once something is selected in the selection-list.
When something is selected, code like
document.getElementById("fields").innerHTML='<object type="text/html" data="' + fieldsPage + '" style="width:70%;height:90%" ></object>';
is executed, filling the DIV with the contents of another (generated) page.
I can view the page fine in Chrome and IE, but...
...when I search for something, Chrome finds it even in the DIV filled through innerHTML, but IE doesn't.
IE seems to only search in the header and selection-list DIV's.
Any suggestions to get IE to search the whole page as well?
Try this:
var node = document.createElement ("object");
node.type = "text/html";
node.data = fieldsPage;
node.style.width = "70%";
node.style.height= "90%";
document.getElementById("fields").innerHTML = "";
document.getElementById("fields").appendChild(node);
Good luck.
I've got YUI set up and working. I've created a custom button and it shows up fine. What I would like that button to do is wrap selected text with my own custom 'span' tags, just like clicking the 'bold' button wraps selected text with 'strong' / 'bold' tags.
Does anyone have any examples they could point to to make this work?
Discovered the solution for myself, so I'm posting so others may see as well. :)
First, a BIG thanks to MK_Dev for inspiration from his similar question asked back in April. Here is the all the code that's needed for my problem (above):
this.toolbar.on('mycustombuttonClick', function() {
var sSelection = this._getSelection();
var sNewElt = '<span class="testhere">' + sSelection + '</span>';
this.execCommand('inserthtml', sNewElt);
return false;
}, this, true);
Note that this assumes that the button that's inserting the html is on the toolbar.
