Javascript regular expression to capture characters - javascript

I have written the following regexp in Javascript:
var rule = /^<[a-zA-Z0-9].*>/;
And the I checked it against this string:
var str = "<string stringValue><string2 stringValue>";
And the I executed:
var res = rule.exec(str);
And the res retruns:
<string stringValue> <string2 stringValue2>
Everything works in the way I need. But I must change two things:
1- First capture each occurrence (i mean each block of tag, in my example there are two)
2- I should strip off the tags [<>] in returned value. Is it then possible?

Regular expressions are, by default, "greedy". The .* in your rule will match as many characters as possible while still succeeding. Also, since you used ^ at the start, your pattern would only match the tag at the start of your input. This is why you are matching too much currently.
/<([^>]*)>/
Will match either tag, and put the contents (without the < >) in a capture group.
To find every tag, you can run the regular expression multiple times. Adding /g to the end makes the expression global, which allows for this behaviour.

tags = [],
input = "<string stringValue><string2 stringValue>";
while (match = rule.exec(input)) {
tags.push(match[1]);

In each loop, match[1] refers to the first capture group, the parentheses in the expression.
It will return:
[ "string stringValue", "string2 stringValue" ]

I guess you want to get the key value pair.
Try the code below:

var str = "<string stringValue><string2 stringValue>";

Try like this:

JS What's the fastest way to display one specific line of a list?

In my Javascript code, I get one very long line as a string.
This one line only has around 65'000 letters. Example:
config=123&url=http://localhost/example&path_of_code=blablaba&link=kjslfdjs...
What I have to do is replace all & with an break (\n) first and then pick only the line which starts with "path_of_code=". This line I have to write in a variable.
The part with replace & with an break (\n) I already get it, but the second task I didn't.

var contentJS= obj.value;
var splittedResult;
splittedResult = contentJS.replace(/&/g, '\n');
What is the fastest way to do it? Please note, the list is usually very long.
It sounds like you want to extract the text after &path_of_code= up until either the end of the string or the next &. That's easily done with a regular expression using a capture group, then using the value of that capture group:
var rex = /&path_of_code=([^&]+)/;
var match = rex.exec(theString);
if (match) {
var text = match[1];
}

Use combination of String.indexOf() and String.substr()

but the second task I didn't.
You can use filter() and startsWith()
splittedResult = splittedResult.filter(i => i.startsWith('path_of_code='));

How to put a variable in my JS regular expression? [duplicate]

I want to add a (variable) tag to values with regex, the pattern works fine with PHP but I have troubles implementing it into JavaScript.
The pattern is (value is the variable):
/(?!(?:[^<]+>|[^>]+<\/a>))\b(value)\b/is
I escaped the backslashes:
var str = $("#div").html();
var regex = "/(?!(?:[^<]+>|[^>]+<\\/a>))\\b(" + value + ")\\b/is";
$("#div").html(str.replace(regex, "" + value + ""));
But this seem not to be right, I logged the pattern and its exactly what it should be.
Any ideas?
To create the regex from a string, you have to use JavaScript's RegExp object.
If you also want to match/replace more than one time, then you must add the g (global match) flag. Here's an example:
var stringToGoIntoTheRegex = "abc";
var regex = new RegExp("#" + stringToGoIntoTheRegex + "#", "g");
// at this point, the line above is the same as: var regex = /#abc#/g;
var input = "Hello this is #abc# some #abc# stuff.";
var output = input.replace(regex, "!!");

In the general case, escape the string before using as regex:
Not every string is a valid regex, though: there are some speciall characters, like ( or [. To work around this issue, simply escape the string before turning it into a regex. A utility function for that goes in the sample below:

Note: the regex in the question uses the s modifier, which didn't exist at the time of the question, but does exist -- a s (dotall) flag/modifier in JavaScript -- today.
If you are trying to use a variable value in the expression, you must use the RegExp "constructor".
var regex = "(?!(?:[^<]+>|[^>]+<\/a>))\b(" + value + ")\b";

I found I had to double slash the \b to get it working. For example to remove "1x" words from a string using a variable, I needed to use:
str = "1x";

You don't need the " to define a regular expression so just:
var regex = /(?!(?:[^<]+>|[^>]+<\/a>))\b(value)\b/is; // this is valid syntax
If value is a variable and you want a dynamic regular expression then you can't use this notation; use the alternative notation.
String.replace also accepts strings as input, so you can do "fox".replace("fox", "bear");
Alternative:
var regex = new RegExp("/(?!(?:[^<]+>|[^>]+<\/a>))\b(value)\b/", "is");
var regex = new RegExp("/(?!(?:[^<]+>|[^>]+<\/a>))\b(" + value + ")\b/", "is");
var regex = new RegExp("/(?!(?:[^<]+>|[^>]+<\/a>))\b(.*?)\b/", "is");
Keep in mind that if value contains regular expressions characters like (, [ and ? you will need to escape them.
I found this thread useful - so I thought I would add the answer to my own problem.
I wanted to edit a database configuration file (datastax cassandra) from a node application in javascript and for one of the settings in the file I needed to match on a string and then replace the line following it.
This was my solution.

After running, it will change the existing data directory setting to the new one:

This example will replace all urls using my-domain.com to my-other-domain (both are variables).
You can do dynamic regexs by combining string values and other regex expressions within a raw string template. Using String.raw will prevent javascript from escaping any character within your string values.

Javascript find and replace string with variable values

I have an angular app, but I have one page that needs to be pre-rendered with no javascript (for printing and PDF), some of the content is loaded with the Angular variable inputs {{field(10)}}
I pre-load the content but need a way to find and replace the string so that:
{{field(10)}}
is changed into the value of this
submission.inputs[10]
So for example:
var string = 'This is some content: {{field[10]}}';
var submission.inputs[10] = 'replace value';
I want the new string to be this
var newString = 'This is some content: replace value';
This is running in Node so it has the latest version of Javascript.
I tried this:
var newString = string.replace(/\{{(.+?)}}/g, submission.inputs[$1]);
But I don't think my syntax is correct.
Your current regex extracts all the text contained within {{}} with its capture group. But you only want the index of the replacement, which is contained within the [], and not the entire string itself. So you have two options:
Modify regex to capture only the index, so that would look like /{{field\[(.+?)\]}}/, where the capture group now only takes the number within the brackets.
Leave the original regex alone, but change the replace function to extract the number from the returned match. In this case you'll have a second regex (or some other method) to extract the number from the matched string (in this case, get "10" out of "field[10]").
Here's an example demonstrating both:
var string = 'This is some content: {{field[10]}}';
var submission = {inputs: []};
submission.inputs[10] = 'replace value';
// I want the new string to be this
// var newString = 'This is some content: replace value';

You can use the following regex to extract the contents between {{field[ and ]}} as the snippet below shows. The snippet uses a callback in the replace function and passes the captured group's value to it so that an appropriate value may be returned (submission.inputs[b] where b is the number you want: 10 in this case).

How can I remove all characters up to and including the 3rd slash in a string?

I'm having trouble with removing all characters up to and including the 3 third slash in JavaScript. This is my string:
http://blablab/test
The result should be:
test
Does anybody know the correct solution?
To get the last item in a path, you can split the string on / and then pop():
var url = "http://blablab/test";
alert(url.split("/").pop());
//-> "test"
To specify an individual part of a path, split on / and use bracket notation to access the item:
var url = "http://blablab/test/page.php";
alert(url.split("/")[3]);
//-> "test"
Or, if you want everything after the third slash, split(), slice() and join():
var url = "http://blablab/test/page.php";
alert(url.split("/").slice(3).join("/"));
//-> "test/page.php"

The regex is /[\s\S]*\//
/ is the start of the regex
Where [\s\S] means whitespace or non whitespace (anything), not to be confused with . which does not match line breaks (. is the same as [^\r\n]).
* means that we match anywhere from zero to unlimited number of [\s\S]
\/ Means match a slash character
The last / is the end of the regex

var index = 0;

To make it a one liner you could make the following:
str = str.substr(str.indexOf("/",str.indexOf("/",str.indexOf("/")+1)+1)+1);
You can use split to split the string in parts and use slice to return all parts after the third slice.
var str = "http://blablab/test",
arr = str.split("/");
arr = arr.slice(3);

You could use a regular expression like this one:

A string’s match method gives you either an array (of the whole match, in this case the whole input, and of any capture groups (and we want the first capture group)), or null. So, for general use you need to pull out the 1th element of the array, or null if a match wasn’t found:

How to extract a string using JavaScript Regex?

I'm trying to extract a substring from a file with JavaScript Regex. Here is a slice from the file :
DATE:20091201T220000
SUMMARY:Dad's birthday
the field I want to extract is "Summary". Here is the approach:

You need these changes:
Put the * inside the parenthesis as
suggested above. Otherwise your matching
group will contain only one
character.
Get rid of the ^ and $. With the global option they match on start and end of the full string, rather than on start and end of lines. Match on explicit newlines instead.
I suppose you want the matching group (what's
inside the parenthesis) rather than
the full array? arr[0] is
the full match ("\nSUMMARY:...") and
the next indexes contain the group
matches.
String.match(regexp) is
supposed to return an array with the
matches. In my browser it doesn't (Safari on Mac returns only the full
match, not the groups), but
Regexp.exec(string) works.
You need to use the m flag:
multiline; treat beginning and end characters (^ and $) as working
over multiple lines (i.e., match the beginning or end of each line
(delimited by \n or \r), not only the very beginning or end of the
whole input string)
Also put the * in the right place:

Your regular expression most likely wants to be
/\nSUMMARY:(.*)$/g
A helpful little trick I like to use is to default assign on match with an array.
var arr = iCalContent.match(/\nSUMMARY:(.*)$/g) || [""]; //could also use null for empty value
return arr[0];
This way you don't get annoying type errors when you go to use arr
This code works:
let str = "governance[string_i_want]";
let res = str.match(/[^governance\[](.*)[^\]]/g);
console.log(res);
res will equal "string_i_want". However, in this example res is still an array, so do not treat res like a string.
By grouping the characters I do not want, using [^string], and matching on what is between the brackets, the code extracts the string I want!

(.*) instead of (.)* would be a start. The latter will only capture the last character on the line.
Also, no need to escape the :.
You should use this :
