I've tried to create a jQuery effect using fancy box to contain my content and within that is a large image with thumbnails below. What I was trying to make happen was when the thumbnails are clicked then the large image updates (see RACE Twelve image as an example). This works fine but the problem is when I go to another fancy box on my website (SEE RACE ONE box) then that image has been updated to be whatever thumbnail was clicked last.
I thought this might be event bubbling but preventing default hasn't helped.
I'm very new to jQuery and know that this is something stupid that I'm doing.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated? Thank you :)
Live version of page: http://www.goodwood.co.uk/members-meeting/the-races.aspx
jsfiddle for jQuery: http://jsfiddle.net/greenhulk01/JXqzL/
(function ($) {
$(document).ready(function () {
$('.races-thumbnail').live("click", function (e) {
$('.races-main-image').hide();
$('.races-image-wrap').css('background-image', "url('http://www.goodwood.co.uk/siteelements/images/structural/loaders/ajax-loader.gif')");
var i = $('<img />').attr('src', this.href).load(function () {
$('.races-main-image').attr('src', i.attr('src'));
$('.races-image-wrap').css('background-image', 'none');
$('.races-main-image').fadeIn();
});
return false;
e.preventDefault();
});
$(".races-image-wrap img").toggle(function () { //fired the first time
$(".races-pop-info").show();
$(this).animate({
width: "259px",
height: "349px"
});
}, function () { // fired the second time
$(".races-pop-info").hide();
$('.races-main-image').animate({
width: "720px",
height: "970px"
});
});
$('#fancybox-overlay, #fancybox-close').live("click", function () {
$(".races-pop-info").show();
$(".races-main-image").animate({
width: "259px",
height: "349px"
});
});
});
})(jQuery);
$('.races-main-image') will select all elements with that class, even the ones which aren't currently visible.
You can select the closest '.races-main-image' to the clicked element as per the code below (when placed inside the click event handler)
$('.races-main-image', $(e.target).closest('.races-fancy-box'))
So your new code should look like:
$('.races-thumbnail').live("click", function (e) {
var racesmainimage = $('.races-main-image', $(e.target).closest('.races-fancy-box'));
var racesimagewrap = $('.races-image-wrap', $(e.target).closest('.races-fancy-box'));
racesmainimage.hide();
racesimagewrap.css('background-image', "url('http://www.goodwood.co.uk/siteelements/images/structural/loaders/ajax-loader.gif')");
var i = $('<img />').attr('src', this.href).load(function () {
racesmainimage.attr('src', i.attr('src'));
racesimagewrap.css('background-image', 'none');
racesmainimage.fadeIn();
});
return false;
});
I've also removed your 'e.preventDefault();' return false; includes that, and was preventing e.preventDefault() from being executed in any case.

I'm having a tricky time with this code.
First, I have a series of images, each within an anchor.
a > img
a > img
a > img
The functionality I want is, when you roll your mouse over the image it dynamically adds 2 share buttons to the anchor:
a > .fb + .twitter + img
When you roll off they get removed.
The problem is, I also have a lightbox which binds to the a. That means when you click one of the share divs, it shows the share box properly, but it also triggers the lightbox.
I have tried everything to stop this... preventDefault(), stopPropagation() and return false. None of them stop the div click from bubbling to the anchor and triggering the lightbox.
First is my code for the rollovers. App.postImages is just a cached collection of jQuery image anchors. I use .add() to also add embedded video containers.
rolloverShares: {
divs: $('<div class="image-rollover rollover-facebook">Facebook</div><div class="image-rollover rollover-twitter">Twitter</div>'),
init: function() {
var _this = this;
App.postImages.add('.embed-container', '#content-wrapper').hover(
function() {
_this.divs.prependTo($(this)).show();
},
function() {
$('div', this).remove();
}
);
$(document).on('click', '.rollover-facebook', function() {
Social.facebook.popup();
return false;
});
$(document).on('click', '.rollover-twitter', function() {
Social.twitter.popup();
return false;
});
}
},
Here is my lightbox code. Nothing fancy. If it matters, the .on() in the block below makes it so you can click anywhere on the lightbox to close it, not just the image.
lightbox: function() {
if (isDesktop) {
App.postImages.nivoLightbox({
effect: 'fade',
theme: 'default',
keyboardNav: false,
clickOverlayToClose: true,
errorMessage: 'The requested image cannot be loaded. Please try again later.'
});
$(document).on('click', '.nivo-lightbox-image img', function() {
$(this).closest('.nivo-lightbox-overlay').find('.nivo-lightbox-close').click();
});
} else {
App.postImages.click(function(e) {
e.preventDefault();
});
}
},
Also I suppose i should put what's in App.postImages. It's just this:
$('a img', '#content-wrapper').not('.share-button img').parent().addClass('post-image')
I have this function:
$(".insidediv").hide();
$(".floater").mouseenter(function(){
$(".hideimg").fadeOut(function(){
$(".insidediv").fadeIn();
});
});
$(".floater").mouseleave(function(){
$(".insidediv").fadeOut(function(){
$(".hideimg").fadeIn();
});
});
the function built to make a little animation, when you 'mouseenter' the div the picture I have there is hidden and than a few text show up.
it works fine if i move the mouse slowly. but if i move my mouse fast over the div the function getting confused or something and it shows me both '.insidediv and .hideimg,
how can i fixed that little problem so it wont show me both? thanks!
You need to reset the opacity, because fadeIn and fadeOut uses this css property for animation. Just stopping the animation is not enough.
This should work:
var inside = $(".insidediv"),
img = $(".hideimg");
duration = 500;
inside.hide();
$(".floater").mouseenter(function () {
if (inside.is(":visible"))
inside.stop().animate({ opacity: 1 }, duration);
img.stop().fadeOut(duration, function () {
inside.fadeIn(duration);
});
});
$(".floater").mouseleave(function () {
if (img.is(":visible"))
img.stop().animate({ opacity: 1 }, duration);
inside.stop().fadeOut(duration, function () {
img.fadeIn(duration);
});
});
I just introduced the duration variable to get animations of equal length.
Here is a working fiddle: http://jsfiddle.net/eau7M/1/ (modification from previous comment on other post)
try this:
var $insideDiv = $(".insidediv");
var $hideImg = $(".hideimg");
$insideDiv.hide();
$(".floater").mouseenter(function(){
$hideImg.finish().fadeOut(function(){
$insideDiv.fadeIn();
});
}).mouseleave(function(){
$insideDiv.finish().fadeOut(function(){
$hideImg.fadeIn();
});
});
This will solve your issue:
var inside = $(".insidediv"),
img = $(".hideimg");
inside.hide();
$(".floater").hover(function () {
img.stop(true).fadeOut('fast',function () {
inside.stop(true).fadeIn('fast');
});
},function () {
inside.stop(true).fadeOut('fast',function () {
img.stop(true).fadeIn('fast');
});
});
Updated Fiddle
You need to set the 'mouseleave' function when the mouse is still inside the
'floater' div.
Try this (i have tried it on the jsfiddle you setup and it works):
.....
<div class="floater">Float</div>
<div class="insidediv">inside</div>
<div class="hideimg">img</div>
var inside = $('.insidediv'),
img = $('.hideimg');
inside.hide();
$('.floater').mouseenter( function() {
img.stop().hide();
inside.show( function() {
$('.floater').mouseleave( function() {
inside.hide();
img.fadeIn();
inside.stop(); // inside doesn't show when you hover the div many times fast
});
});
});
.....
I have an element on my website, it looks like so:
<div class="nw_help"><div class="nw_help_content">...</div></div>
Easy stuff. Using CSS on nw_help:hover, nw_help_content becomes visible. In order to support touchscreens too, I have written the following:
$(document).ready(function() {
$('.nw_help').click(function() {
$(this).find(".nw_help_content").css('visibility', 'visible');
});
});
$(document).ready(function() {
$('.nw_help_content').click(function() {
$(this).css('visibility', 'hidden');
});
});
The first function works flawlessly, the second one doesn't wanna work at all. I've checked if $('.nw_help_content').css('visibility', 'hidden'); is working in browser's console and it is.
Any ideas?
Thanks so much in advance for your answer.
Edit: Now it hit me: the first function is triggered on clicking nw_help_content as well and it "neutralizes" the second function. But how to prevent it?
I believe if you have the visibility hidden on page render, the element is never rendered. You'll need event delegation:
$(document).ready(function() {
$('.nw_help').click(function() {
$(this).find(".nw_help_content").css('visibility', 'visible');
});
$(document).on('click', '.nw_help_content', function() {
$(this).css('visibility', 'hidden');
});
});
Also, only one DOM ready statement is needed.
Demo: http://jsfiddle.net/7sM3L/4/
I suggest staying away from direct CSS rule manipulation on this. Just using jQuery show and hide will provide a more solid/reliable result.
$(document).ready(function() {
$('.nw_help').click(function() {
$(this).find('.nw_help_content').show();
});
});
$(document).ready(function() {
$('.nw_help_content').click(function() {
$(this).hide();
});
});
It is actually working/ Since the divs are nested you are both events fire and the div is hidden and shown on same click.
use toggle instead.
$(document).ready(function() {
$('.nw_help').click(function() {
$(this).find(".nw_help_content").toggle();
});
});
Check out the fiddle
As Zenith says, this is due to event bubbling... Another solution is to bind the event only to the outer container and simply check for the visibilty:
$(document).ready(function() {
$('.nw_help').click(function() {
var content = $(this).find('.nw_help_content');
if(content.css('visibility') == 'hidden') {
content.css('visibility','visible');
} else {
content.css('visibility','hidden');
}
});
});
I would like to create a slide down button to show the content of a DIV that has no height. I did an example here:
fiddle
I looked for this special form of sliding buttons but all I have found were examples where a DIV and its content has given width and height.
In my example the structure is different to that but it is quiet simple. There are three different divisions. A head with given height, the content div (depends from padding) that should be shown and below that the slider/trigger (also with given height) as a button.
Now I would like click on the trigger that slides down about the height of the content div and finally the content div should be appear.
It would be great if someone could help me out.
Thanks alot.
I think this is what you are looking at.
Fiddle
$(document).ready(function () {
$('.content').hide(); //hide initialy
$('.slide').click(function () {
var $this = $(this);
// target only the content which is a sibling
$(this).siblings('.content').slideToggle(200, function () {
$this.text($(this).is(':visible') ? 'click to close' : 'click to open');
});
});
});
You should try slideToggle() instead (it also helps when jQuery is loaded, but that was probably just an oversight when you made it):
$(document).ready(function () {
$('.slide').click(function () {
$(this).prev('.content').slideToggle(500, function () {
$this = $(this);
$slide = $('.slide');
if ($this.is(':visible')) {
$slide.text('Click to close');
} else {
$slide.text('Click to open');
}
});
});
});

I have a list which has a jquery handler for a mouse click. I need to place an image within the list, but need a mouse click on the image to perform a different function. I was thinking some sort of unbind on mouseover and bind on mouseout but can not get it to work. Is there an easier method?
The problem I am having is it performs the two clickable events when I click the image.
JS
$(function () {
var items = $('#v-nav>ul>li').each(function (index) {
$(this).click(function () {
alert("This is a click on the list")
}
});
});
html
<li id="tab" runat="server">Keywords <a class="fake-link" onclick="alert("This is an image click")"><img id="icon" src="images/icon.gif" style="float: right; visibility:visible"/></a></li>
So any ideas how I can only have the alert from the image click? Thanks in advance!
$(function () {
var items = $('#v-nav>ul>li').each(function (index) {
$(this).click(function (e) {
if($(e.target).attr('id')==='icon')){
//call that function which runs on image click
}
else {
alert("This is a click on the list")
}
}
});
});
Edit: As puppybeard suggested here is another way if you want to have different function to run for all images in the li's
$(function () {
var items = $('#v-nav>ul>li').each(function (index) {
$(this).click(function (e) {
if($(e.target).is('img'))){
//call that function which runs on image click
}
else {
alert("This is a click on the list")
}
}
});
});
It's hard to do because of event bubbling.
Event namespaces and .on() .off() would help.
For example:
var items = $('#v-nav>ul>li');
var someFunctionToPerform = function() {
alert('Imma list click event');
}
items.on('click.someEventNameSpace', someFunctionToPerform);
items.find('img').on({
'mouseover': function() {
items.off('click.someEventNameSpace');
},
'mouseleave': function() {
items.on('click.someEventNameSpace', someFunctionToPerform);
},
'click': function() {
alert('Imma list image click event!');
}
});
This code will unbind click event for list items after mouseover event on image inside the list and bind them back after mouseleave event on image.
That's probably the hard way, but still it should work. Other answer could be buggy in IE 8- because of different dirrection of event bubbling.
