I'm having trouble in attempting to use two models with the same view in backbone.js. Somehow the view is being rendered before the triggers are getting triggered to begin the render function.

The template are getting loaded through another js function elsewhere that to the best of my knowledge is working correctly. Somehow the render function is getting called before the success handlers. I can't figure out how. The only side effect it has is that the Preferences model doesn't get the exists property and is hence undefined which cause all sorts of problems. Also, options.family_id is set correctly. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.
EDIT: It also seems to be going to renderPrereq up to six times which I also can't figure out.

Looks like the problem is the way it is constructed... I don't think the render is called before success_handler .
If you look at the renderPrereq method , 2 models on change will call this method on success.
But the fetch methods are async. So you never know which handler will be called first.
And when the change on the model is triggered. This calls the render method which is inside the renderPrereq method.

UPDATE: I've updated my views to show how I resolved this question using information from the accepted answer.
I'd like to update/increment an attribute ('video_views') of my Backbone JS model via a click event from my view. But, as a Backbone rookie, I'm not sure how to accomplish this exactly.
I'd like the 'video_views' attribute to increment by one with the playVideo event (click).

Much simpler code (no need to define those add and remove methods on the collection!). Also more common Javascript coding style conventions.
Please note I had to manually generate an "Id" attribute to allow creating more than one contact. As you are making Id = 0 by default, second model with same is not added, as Backbone sees a model with id=0 is already in the collection.
When you want to save, call the model.save() method. Don't call sync manually, you'll normally don't need to!
For the model to be saved to the database before being added to the collection, use:

Sync method tries to sync to a server setup to handle it, with CRUD abilities. If thats not what you're looking for, and you just want to display this information on the client side, instead of using sync, you should use Collection.add(model) and Collection.remove(model)

Whenever I need to share an event between a view and controller I usually wire up the listeners within the module that instantiates the controller. This example is a bit contrived, but it gets the point across. The full working code is in this codepen. The relevant bit is copied here. Notice the line this.listenTo(view, 'itemview:selected', this.itemSelected); where the view's event triggers a method on the controller.

The other way to accomplish this, if you cannot wire it all up within the same module, is to use Marionette's messaging infrastructure. For example, you can use the application's event aggregator to pass events around.
i have a problem with backbone.js. I'm creating a frontend for an existing api, for me unaccessable. The problem is that when I try to add a new model to a collection, i can see in my firebug that every time backbone tries to create the model it appends the attribute name to the url.
Example:

By default, Backbone create models URLs this way: {collection url}/{model id}.
It consider the collection URL to be a base URL in a RESTful way.
Here you only want to set the Model url property to the URL you whish to call. That'll overwrite the default behavior. http://backbonejs.org/#Model-url
So, I am able to validate just fine when I am editing an existing item. However, if I want to create, validation for some reason is not getting kicked off. Instead, I am seeing the errors below:

So, shouldnt my create be getting validated too? Why isnt it?
When creating a new instance of a model, the validate method isn't called. According to the backbone documentation the validation is only called before set or save.
I am also struggling with this problem and found solutions in related questions:
You could make a new model and then set its attributes (see question 9709968)
A more elegant way is calling the validate method when initializing the model (see question 7923074)
I'm not completely satisfied with these solutions because creating a new instance of the model like described in the backbone documentation shouldn't happen when an error is triggered. Unfortunately, in both solutions you're still stuck with a new instance of the model.
edit: Being stuck with a new instance of the model is actually quite nice. This way you can give the user feedback about why it didn't pass the validator and give the opportunity to correct his/her input.
OK. So, I'm having some mild success here.
First, I wrote my own validation framework, Backbone.Validator since I didn't like any of the ones out there that I found.
Second, I am able to get the validation framework to set off the validation routine by setting silent: false with in the object provided during the new Model creation.
Along with using the use_defaults parameter from my validation framework I am able to override bad data during setup in initial testing. I'm still working on doing some more tests on this, but it seems to be going OK from from the Chrome browser console.
