Event to detect when position:sticky is triggered - javascript

I'm using the new position: sticky (info) to create an iOS-like list of content.
It's working well and far superior than the previous JavaScript alternative (example) however as far as I know no event is fired when it's triggered, which means I can't do anything when the bar hits the top of the page, unlike with the previous solution.
I'd like to add a class (e.g. stuck) when an element with position: sticky hits the top of the page. Is there a way to listen for this with JavaScript? Usage of jQuery is fine.

The top value needs to be -1px or the element will never intersect with the top of the browser window (thus never triggering the intersection observer).
To counter this 1px of hidden content, an additional 1px of space should be added to either the border or the padding of the sticky element.
💡 Alternatively, if you wish to keep the CSS as is (top:0), then you can apply the "correction" at the intersection observer-level by adding the setting rootMargin: '-1px 0px 0px 0px' (as #mattrick showed in his answer)

I found a solution somewhat similar to #vsync's answer, but it doesn't require the "hack" that you need to add to your stylesheets. You can simply change the boundaries of the IntersectionObserver to avoid needing to move the element itself outside of the viewport:

After Chrome added position: sticky, it was found to be not ready enough and relegated to to --enable-experimental-webkit-features flag. Paul Irish said in February "feature is in a weird limbo state atm".
I was using the polyfill until it become too much of a headache. It works nicely when it does, but there are corner cases, like CORS problems, and it slows page loads by doing XHR requests for all your CSS links and reparsing them for the "position: sticky" declaration that the browser ignored.
Now I'm using ScrollToFixed, which I like better than StickyJS because it doesn't mess up my layout with a wrapper.

There is currently no native solution. See Targeting position:sticky elements that are currently in a 'stuck' state. However I have a CoffeeScript solution that works with both native position: sticky and with polyfills that implement the sticky behavior.

I came up with this solution that works like a charm and is pretty small. :)
No extra elements needed.
It does run on the window scroll event though which is a small downside.

Note: This solution doesn't take elements that have bottom stickiness into account. This only works for things like a sticky header. It can probably be adapted to take bottom stickiness into account though.

I know it has been some time since the question was asked, but I found a good solution to this. The plugin stickybits uses position: sticky where supported, and applies a class to the element when it is 'stuck'. I've used it recently with good results, and, at time of writing, it is active development (which is a plus for me) :)

What is the right way to smoothly pin an element according to scroll position?
I tried debouncing a scroll listener for performance but the pinning is not accurate. Even with debouncing set to 10ms it's not smooth and the element doesn't snap cleanly to its initial position.

I tried to use scrollMagic for the project on a scene with a pin and additional triggers but the scrolling wasn't very smooth. So I'm trying to rebuild it with a stripped-down version and debounced listeners. Is this approach possible, or should I rather try to optimize my scrollMagic scene?
As James points out, you can just use position: sticky as one option, but that doesn't work in older browsers and its uses are limited to simpler situations in newer browsers, so I'll continue with the JS solution assuming you want to go that route.
There is a lot going on in your JS, and I think you are probably overcomplicating things, so I will give you a few basics to consider.
When you are toggling things based on scroll, either toggle inline styles or a class, but not both. I would recommend toggling a class because it allows you to have one function that can work on multiple screen sizes (i.e., you can use media queries to change the behavior of your toggled class based on screen size). Also it keeps all your styles in one place instead of having them split between your JS and your stylesheet.
Try to keep the work you're doing while scrolling as minimal as possible. For example, cache references to elements in variables outside your scroll function so you're not continually looking them up every time you scroll a pixel. Avoid loops inside scroll functions.
Using setInterval is not generally the recommended approach for increasing performance on scroll functions. All that is going to do is run a function every X amount of time, all the time, whether you're scrolling or not. What you really want to do is rate-limit your scroll function directly. That way, if you scroll a long ways real fast your function will only be called a fraction of the total times it would otherwise be called, but if you scroll a short distance slowly it will still be called a minimum number of times to keep things looking smooth, and if you don't scroll at all then you're not calling your function at all. Also, you probably want to throttle your function in this case, not debounce it.
Consider using the throttle function from Underscore.js or Lodash.js instead of inventing your own because those ones are highly performant and guaranteed to work across a wide variety of browsers.
Here is a simple example of sticking an element to the top of the screen on scroll, throttled with Lodash. I'm using a 25ms throttle, which is about the maximum amount I'd recommend for keeping things looking smooth where you won't really notice the delay in the element sticking/unsticking as you scroll past your threshold. You could go down to as little as 10ms.

This is from a project of mine. The element is a nav bar. It sits below a header bar, so when you are at the top of the page, you see the header then the nav below it, and as you scroll down, the header moves off screen but the nav sticks at the top and is always visible.

My Scenario: I had an list of string, in which I had to append a string given by a user and scroll to the end of the list automatically. I had fixed height of the display of the list, after which it should overflow.
I tried #Jeremy Ruten's answer, it worked, but it was scrolling to the (n-1)th element. If anybody is facing this type of issue, you can use setTimeOut() method workaround. You need to modify the code to below:

I have encountered the same problem, but with an additional constraint: I had no control over the code that appended new elements to the scroll container. None of the examples I found here allowed me to do just that. Here is the solution I ended up with .
It uses Mutation Observers (https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/MutationObserver) which makes it usable only on modern browsers (though polyfills exist)

Also for a chat application, I found making this assignment after your chats were loaded to be useful, you also might need to slap on short timeout as well.

Just as a bonus snippet. I'm using angular and was trying to scroll a message thread to the bottom when a user selected different conversations with users. In order to make sure that the scroll works after the new data had been loaded into the div with the ng-repeat for messages, just wrap the scroll snippet in a timeout.

Makes it so the scroll bar doesn't stay anchored to the top when a child element is added. For example, when new message is added at the bottom of chat, scroll chat to new message.
Why not use simple CSS to do this?

A very simple method to this is to set the scroll to to the height of the div.

I know this is an old question, but none of these solutions worked out for me. I ended up using offset().top to get the desired results. Here's what I used to gently scroll the screen down to the last message in my chat application:

Resize on div element

jQuery has the resize() - event, but it just work with window.

DIV does not fire a resize event, so you won't be able to do exactly what you've coded, but you could look into monitoring DOM properties.
If you are actually working with something like resizables, and that is the only way for a div to change in size, then your resize plugin will probably be implementing a callback of its own.

I've created jquery plugin jquery.resize it use resizeObserver if supported or solution based on marcj/css-element-queries scroll event, no setTimeout/setInterval.

I've created this for jQuery Terminal and extracted into separated repo and npm package, but in a mean time I switched to hidden iframe because I had problems with resize if element was inside iframe. EDIT: new version use iframe and resize on it's window object because the previous solutions was not working when page was inside iframe.
EDIT2: Because the fallback use iframe you can't use it with form controls or images, you need to add it to the wrapper element.
EDIT3:: there is better solution using resizeObserver polyfill that use mutation observer (if resizeObserver is not supported) and work even in IE. It also have TypeScript typings.

For a google maps integration I was looking for a way to detect when a div has changed in size. Since google maps always require proper dimensions e.g. width and height in order to render properly.
The solution I came up with is a delegation of an event, in my case a tab click. This could be a window resize of course, the idea remains the same:

Wait cursor over entire html page

Is it possible to set the cursor to 'wait' on the entire html page in a simple way? The idea is to show the user that something is going on while an ajax call is being completed. The code below shows a simplified version of what I tried and also demonstrate the problems I run into:
if an element (#id1) has a cursor style set it will ignore the one set on body (obviously)
some elements have a default cursor style (a) and will not show the wait cursor on hover
the body element has a certain height depending on the content and if the page is short, the cursor will not show below the footer

I understand you may not have control over this, but you might instead go for a "masking" div that covers the entire body with a z-index higher than 1. The center part of the div could contain a loading message if you like.
Then, you can set the cursor to wait on the div and don't have to worry about links as they are "under" your masking div. Here's some example CSS for the "masking div":

The * part ensures that the cursor doesn't change when you hover over a link. Although links will still be clickable.
I have been struggling with this problem for hours today.
Basically everything was working just fine in FireFox but (of course) not in IE.
In IE the wait cursor was showing AFTER the time consuming function was executed.

My code runs in a JavaScript class hence the this and MyClass (MyClass is a singleton).
I had the same problems when trying to display a div as described on this page. In IE it was showing after the function had been executed. So I guess this trick would solve that problem too.

Why don't you just use one of those fancy loading graphics (eg: http://ajaxload.info/)? The waiting cursor is for the browser itself - so whenever it appears it has something to do with the browser and not with the page.
To set the cursor from JavaScript for the whole window, use:

It seems that if the property body is used as apposed to html it doesn't show the wait cursor over the whole page. Furthermore if you use a css class you can easily control when it actually shows it.

The dialog is hidden by default, and can be shown using either the show() method, or the showModal() method, which prevents clicking outside the dialog.
The dialog can be forced to close using the close() method, if necessary.
However, if your button links to another page, for example, then the dialog will disappear automatically as soon as the new page is loaded.
Note that the dialog can also be closed at any time by hitting the Esc key.
CSS can be used to style the dialog however you like.
The example uses the html onclick attribute, just for simplicity. Obviously, addEventListener() could also be used.
Late to the party but simply give the Html tag an id by targeting
document.documentElement
and in the CSS place at the top
html#wait * {
cursor: wait !important;
}
and simply remove it when you want to stop this cursor.
