Regex not working as expected in JavaScript - javascript

I wrote the following regex:
(https?:\/\/)?([da-z\.-]+)\.([a-z]{2,6})(\/(\w|-)*)*\/?

I wrote the following JavaScript code:
var urlexp = new RegExp(

And it returns true even though the regex was supposed to not allow single words as valid.
What am I doing wrong?

Your problem is that JavaScript is viewing all your escape sequences as escapes for the string. So your regex goes to memory looking like this:
^(https?://)?([da-z.-]+).([a-z]{2,6})(/(w|-)*)*/?$
Which you may notice causes a problem in the middle when what you thought was a literal period turns into a regular expressions wildcard. You can solve this in a couple ways. Using the forward slash regular expression syntax JavaScript provides:
var urlexp = /^(https?:\/\/)?([da-z\.-]+)\.([a-z]{2,6})(\/(\w|-)*)*\/?$/gi
Or by escaping your backslashes (and not your forward slashes, as you had been doing - that's exclusively for when you're using /regex/mod notation, just like you don't have to escape your single quotes in a double quoted string and vice versa):
var urlexp = new RegExp('^(https?://)?([da-z.-]+)\\.([a-z]{2,6})(/(\\w|-)*)*/?$', 'gi')
Please note the double backslash before the w - also necessary for matching word characters.
A couple notes on your regular expression itself:
[da-z.-]
d is contained in the a-z range. Unless you meant \d? In that case, the slash is important.
(/(\w|-)*)*/?
My own misgivings about the nested Kleene stars aside, you can whittle that alternation down into a character class, and drop the terminating /? entirely, as a trailing slash will be match by the group as you've given it. I'd rewrite as:
(/[\w-]*)*
Though, maybe you'd just like to catch non space characters?
(/[^/\s]*)*
Anyway, modified this way your regular expression winds up looking more like:
^(https?://)?([\da-z.-]+)\.([a-z]{2,6})(/[\w-]*)*$
Remember, if you're going to use string notation: Double EVERY backslash. If you're going to use native /regex/mod notation (which I highly recommend), escape your forward slashes.

Make sure you always select the right regex engine at regex101.com. See an issue that occurred due to using a JS-only compatible regex with [^] construct in Python.
JS regex - at the time of answering this question - did not support lookbehinds. Now, it becomes more and more adopted after its introduction in ECMAScript 2018. You do not really need it here since you can use capturing groups:

The (?:\s|^)#(\S+) matches a whitespace or the start of string with (?:\s|^), then matches #, and then matches and captures into Group 1 one or more non-whitespace chars with (\S+).
To get the start/end indices, use

First of all, have you checked the Code Generator link in the Tools pane on the left?
All languages - "Literal string" vs. "String literal" alert - Make sure you test against the same text used in code, literal string, at the regex tester. A common scenario is copy/pasting a string literal value directly into the test string field, with all string escape sequences like \n (line feed char), \r (carriage return), \t (tab char). See Regex_search c++, for example. Mind that they must be replaced with their literal counterparts. So, if you have in Python text = "Text\n\n abc", you must use Text, two line breaks, abc in the regex tester text field. Text.*?abc will never match it although you might think it "works". Yes, . does not always match line break chars, see How do I match any character across multiple lines in a regular expression?
All languages - Backslash alert - Make sure you correctly use a backslash in your string literal, in most languages, in regular string literals, use double backslash, i.e. \d used at regex101.com must written as \\d. In raw string literals, use a single backslash, same as at regex101. Escaping word boundary is very important, since, in many languages (C#, Python, Java, JavaScript, Ruby, etc.), "\b" is used to define a BACKSPACE char, i.e. it is a valid string escape sequence. PHP does not support \b string escape sequence, so "/\b/" = '/\b/' there.
All languages - Default flags - Global and Multiline - Note that by default m and g flags are enabled at regex101.com. So, if you use ^ and $, they will match at the start and end of lines correspondingly. If you need the same behavior in your code check how multiline mode is implemented and either use a specific flag, or - if supported - use an inline (?m) embedded (inline) modifier. The g flag enables multiple occurrence matching, it is often implemented using specific functions/methods. Check your language reference to find the appropriate one.
line-breaks - Line endings at regex101.com are LF only, you can't test strings with CRLF endings, see regex101.com VS myserver - different results. Solutions can be different for each regex library: either use \R (PCRE, Java, Ruby) or some kind of \v (Boost, PCRE), \r?\n, (?:\r\n?|\n)/(?>\r\n?|\n) (good for .NET) or [\r\n]+ in other libraries (see answers for C#, PHP). Another issue related to the fact that you test your regex against a multiline string (not a list of standalone strings/lines) is that your patterns may consume the end of line, \n, char with negated character classes, see an issue like that. \D matched the end of line char, and in order to avoid it, [^\d\n] could be used, or other alternatives.
php - You are dealing with Unicode strings, or want shorthand character classes to match Unicode characters, too (e.g. \w+ to match Стрибижев or Stribiżew, or \s+ to match hard spaces), then you need to use u modifier, see preg_match() returns 0 although regex testers work - To match all occurrences, use preg_match_all, not preg_match with /...pattern.../g, see PHP preg_match to find multiple occurrences and "Unknown modifier 'g' in..." when using preg_match in PHP?- Your regex with inline backreference like \1 refuses to work? python - Note that re.search, re.match, re.fullmatch, re.findall and re.finditer accept the regex as the first argument, and the input string as the second argument. Not re.findall("test 200 300", r"\d+"), but re.findall(r"\d+", "test 200 300"). If you test at regex101.com, please check the "Code Generator" page. - You used re.match that only searches for a match at the start of the string, use re.search: Regex works fine on Pythex, but not in Python - If the regex contains capturing group(s), re.findall returns a list of captures/capture tuples. scala - Your regex attempts to match several lines, but you read the file line by line (e.g. use for (line <- fSource.getLines))? Read it into a single variable (see matching new line in Scala regex, when reading from file)
kotlin - You have Regex("/^\\d+$/")? Remove the outer slashes, they are regex delimiter chars that are not part of a pattern. See Find one or more word in string using Regex in Kotlin - You expect a partial string match, but .matchEntire requires a full string match? Use .find, see Regex doesn't match in Kotlin
mongodb - Do not enclose /.../ with single/double quotation marks, see mongodb regex doesn't work

Javascript: regex for parsing quoted strings containing escaped quote - returns unterminated character class

Searching for a regex which parses efficiently strings containing escaped quote I ended up with the fallowing regular expression literal:
/"[^"\\]*(?:\\.[^"\\]*)*"/
It works well and fast if, for example, used to split a strings like:
var str = 'This is a block of text containing a "string with a \" (escaped quote) in it"';
str.split(/("[^"\\]*(?:\\.[^"\\]*)*")/);
Now the trouble comes in play when i try to build dynamically the regex making use of the built-in RegEx object:
/* splits by space characters and
strings containing escaped quote */
var re = new RegExp("(\\s|\"[^\"\\]*(?:\\.[^\"\\]*)*\")");
How noticeable I know that this use case requires to escape metacharacters and quotes. Nevertheless i get the fallowing errors:
Safari says
SyntaxError: Invalid regular expression: missing terminating ] for character class
Firefox:
SyntaxError: unterminated character class
By the way, the error message returned from Safari give me a little more clue making clear that the regex engine detects a missing closing square bracket, requiring the backslash character before itself to be escaped like so:

but this way I realize that strings containing escaped quote are no more parsed correctly.
Any help or suggestion is really appreciated.
Taking account also of the comment above, I've examined more in depth the topic and finally, thanks to the observation pointed out by #NullUserException, I got the solution. I've realized that the regex object:
var re = new RegExp("(\\s|\"[^\"\\\\]*(?:\\.[^\"\\\\]*)*\")");
didn't work because for a mere oversight I didn't escape correctly the part which detects characters preceded by backslash (escape chars). So, in a string, the sequence \\. must be \\\\.:
var re = new RegExp("(\\s|\"[^\"\\\\]*(?:\\\\.[^\"\\\\]*)*\")");

Issue with custom javascript regex

I have a custom regular expression which I use to detect whole numbers, fractions and floats.

The problem is that for a single letter it matches, and I can't figure out why. But for more letters it fails(which is good).
Disclaimer: I am new to regular expressions, although in http://gskinner.com/RegExr/ it doesn't match a single letter
It's easier to use straight regular expression syntax:
var regEx = /^((^[1-9]|(0\.)|(\.))([0-9]+)?((\s|\.)[0-9]+(\/[0-9])?)?)$/;
When you use the RegExp constructor, you have to double-up on the backslashes. As it is, your code only has single backslashes, so the \. subexpressions are being treated as . — and that's how single non-digit characters are slipping through.
Thus yours would also work this way:
var regEx = new RegExp("^((^[1-9]|(0\\.)|(\\.))([0-9]+)?((\\s|\\.)[0-9]+(/[0-9])?)?)$");
This happens because the string syntax also uses backslash as a quoting mechanism. When your regular expression is first parsed as a string constant, those backslashes are stripped out if you don't double them. When the string is then passed to the regular expression parser, they're gone.
The only time you really need to use the RegExp constructor is when you're building up the regular expression dynamically or when it's delivered to your code via JSON or something.
Well, for a whole number this would be your regex:
/^(0|[1-9]\d*)$/
Then you have to account for the possibility of a float:
/^(0|[1-9]\d*)(.\d+)?$/
Then you have to account for the possibility of a fraction:
/^(0|[1-9]\d*)((.\d+)|(\/[1-9]\d*)?$/
To me this regex is much easier to read than your original, but it's up to you of course.

RegExp in JavaScript, when a quantifier is part of the pattern

I have been trying to use a regexp that matches any text that is between a caret, less than and a greater than, caret.
So it would look like: ^< THE TEXT I WANT SELECTED >^
I have tried something like this, but it isn't working: ^<(.*?)>^
I'm assuming this is possible, right? I think the reason I have been having such a tough time is because the caret serves as a quantifier. Thanks for any help I get!

Just so everyone knows, they following from am not i am worked

But, it turned out that I was getting html entities since I was getting my string by using the .innerHTML property. In other words,
> ... >
< ... <
To solve this, my regexp actually looks like this:
\^<(.*?)((.|\n)*)>\^
This includes the fact that the string in between should be any character or new line. Thanks!
You need to escape the ^ symbol since it has special meaning in a JavaScript regex.
/\^<(.*?)>\^/
In a JavaScript regex, the ^ means beginning of the string, unless the m modifier was used, in which case it means beginning of the line.
This should work:
\^<(.*?)>\^
In a regex, if you want to use a character that has a special meaning (caret, brackets, pipe, ...), you have to escape it using a backslash. For example, (\w\b)*\w\. will select a sequence of words terminated by a dot.
Careful!
If you have to pass the regex pattern as a string, i.e. there's no regex literal like in javascript or perl, you may have to use a double backslash, which the programming language will escape to a single one, which will then be processed by the regex engine.
Same regex in multiple languages:
Python:
import re
myRegex=re.compile(r"\^<(.*?)>\^") # The r before the string prevents backslash escaping
PHP:
$result=preg_match("/\\^<(.*?)>\\^/",$subject); // Notice the double backslashes here?
JavaScript:

subject.match(myRegex);

Edit: Whoops, didn't even notice this was tagged as javascript. Then, you don't have to worry about double backslash at all.
Edit 2: \b represent a word boundary. Though I agree yours is what I would have used myself.
