Hide iframe scrollbar but allow scrolling [duplicate] - javascript

I want to hide any scrollbars from my div elements and my whole body, but still let the user scroll with the mouse wheel or arrow keys. How can this be achieved with raw JavaScript or jQuery? Any ideas?

Like the previous answers, you would use overflow:hidden to disable the scrollbars on the body/div.
Then you'd bind the mousewheel event to a function that would change the scrollTop of the div to emulate scrolling.
For arrow keys, you would bind the keydown event to recognize an arrow key, and then change scrollTop and scrollLeft of the div as appropriate to emulate scrolling.
(Note: you use keydown instead of keypress since IE doesn't recognize keypress for arrow keys.)
Edit: I couldn't get FF/Chrome to recognize keydown on a div, but it works in IE8. Depending on what you needed this for, you can set a keydown listener on the document to scroll the div. (Check out the keyCode reference as an example.)

You dont have to use jquery or js to make this. Its more performant with simple webkit.
Just add the code below to your css file.

Caution !
This will disable all the scrollbar so be sure to put it in a specific class or id if you just want one to be hidden.

I much prefer SamGoody's answer provided to a duplicate of this question. It leaves native scrolling effects intact, instead of trying to manually re-implement for a few particular input devices:
A better solution is to set the target div to overflow:scroll, and wrap it inside a second element that is 8px narrower, who's overflow:hidden.
See the original comment for a fleshed-out example. You may want to use JavaScript to determine the actual size of scrollbars rather than assuming they are always 8px wide as his example does.

To get this working for me, I used this CSS:

But I had problems using $(this).scrollTop(), so I bound to my #id, but adjusted the scrollTop of window. Also, my smooth scrolling mouse would fire lots of 1 or -1 deltas, so I multiplied that by 20.

Well, perhaps not the most intuitive in my opinion, but I can imagine you being able to make it a decent experience, give this a try.

TinyMCE color picker dropdown appears off-screen

This is an issue on Firefox and IE so far that I've tested; the problem does not exist on Chrome.
I'm including two TinyMCE editors on a page with one partially off-screen to start. When I select the color picker dropdown option from the toolbar on the first TinyMCE instance, the dropdown appears where it should. But if I scroll down and select the color picker dropdown in the second instance, that dropdown appears way below the editor and typically off the page.

Without removing the html, body CSS, what can I do to have the color picker always appear in the correct position?
I've traced the problem down to setting CSS on the html, body elements.

The dropdown div has CSS applied to it that is auto-calculated by TinyMCE. It looks something like this:

You did say you don't want to remove any CSS from the html,body, but you didn't say anything about adding to it! This solution is based on the assumption that you can add to the html,body

I hope this helps. In all reality, you really only need to apply position: relative; to the body like so body { position: relative; }
I'm not super familiar with tinymce's colorpicker, but I can see the issue, and I can replicate it reliably: your problem occurs when you have a picker open, and then you scroll. I can replicate this in chrome too. Here's a video.
When I look at the DOM, I see that tinyMCE has created two absolute-positioned divs at the end of document.body, one for each picker. When you open one, their position is updated to reflect the location of the toolbar-button at the time you clicked it, but it never gets updated when you scroll!
So, how to solve this? Well, there are a few possibilities:
Option 1: it looks like tinyMCE provides a method to bind a control to an event (here). With this, you could bind a callback to 'scroll' that repositions the box...
Huh, now that I think of it, you could simply close any open colorpickers whenever a user scrolls ... kinda feels like a cop-out but there's no denying it has the best R.O.I. ;) We'll call that Option 2!
Option 3: depending on the implementation of the colorpicker, you may be able to override where in the DOM those divs get rendered. The API method I saw that looked the most promising is here. Once you have the div inside a relative-positioned parent, you'd also have to make the colorpicker's positioning algorithm smart enough to look in the right place for x and y offset ...when I tried this by just moving the element and mashing in some css by hand in chrome-console, the algorithm still computed x and y offsets based on doc.body, so depending on where you were scrolled at click-time, everything would be out of position
It looks like this issue might be troubling other people as well... maybe they've found a solution but haven't posted anything about it?

It looks like the problem is caused by overflow-x: hidden;
It may not be the answer you want but removing that or moving it to a page wrapper will solve your problem.

Another option would be to force repositioning on scroll, but honestly this is overkill... I strongly recommend fixing the css instead.

You can simply set body width and height to auto, then there won't be any need to use position and you don't have to remove anything. I think you do not need to use height: 100% since it will be auto-calculated by TinyMCE. i hope it helped.

You should look into parent child approach as it is the recommended one. Give your element scroll bars, wrap it in a
containing element, and make the containing element element smaller, and give it:
overflow: hidden;
In your current scenario you can do this pure CSS.
Hide scroll bars in Webkit-based browsers (Chrome and Safari).

Hide scrollbars in IE 10+.

Minimum / Maximum absolute position in CSS

What is the best approach to restricting an absolutely positioned element's position, ideally in pure CSS?
I know that the following isn't possible but I guess what I'm looking for would look something like:

That would allow an element to move to a position no less than 100px from the top of it's containing, positioned element.
An example (and my initial) use case for this is a menu that scrolls as part of a page but stops scrolling when it hits the top of a viewport. (Sticky menus?) an example of which can be seen on this page:

position: sticky
There have been discussions in the W3C about this in recent years. One proposal is the addition of a sticky value for the position property.

This is currently supported in Chrome 23.0.1247.0 and later as an experimental feature. To enable it, enter about:flags for the URL address and press enter. Then search for "experimental WebKit features" and toggle it between enabled and disabled.

Strictly speaking, this is an implementation of sticky content, and not a general-purpose way to limit the minimum or maximum position of an element relative to another element. However, sticky content might be the only practical application for the type of the behavior you're describing.
As there is no way to build this for all major browsers without the use of JavasScript I made my own solution with jQuery:
Assign position:relative to your sticky-top-menu. When it reaches the top of the browser window through scrolling the position is changed to positon:fixed.
Also give your sticky-top-menu top:0 to make sure that it sticks to the top of your browser window.

I know this post is old, and I might be a little late to it, but to anyone still wondering how to do this i would suggest checking out the clamp() method in CSS, you could do something like this:
top: clamp(30px, 10vw, 50px);
Which would set the min top value to 30px, the ideal value to 10vw, and the max value to 50px.
A media query expression that defines the distance between body 0X 0Y and browser-window 0X 0Y would allow elements to be made sticky after page is scrolled
No such expression has otherwise been proposed and is not supported by any browser, to my knowledge, but it would be a useful expression to allow dynamic configuration of sticky elements, such as menu bars that are sticky after page is scrolled past head, without use of JavaScript.

To my knowledge, there is no way to restrict an element that was positioned using absolute positioning using solely CSS.

IE6 onscroll glitch

I have a <div> with some content. I gave this div an id attribute, oDIV, and bound a function to the onscroll event via this small script:

I added some simple CSS to the div, so that a vertical scroll bar would appear. Content stretches down quite a bit and there's a lot to scroll.

Anyways, if the user tries to scroll I want a tooltip to appear to remind the user that there's a filter option to hide some of the stuff they have to scroll, through.
In Firefox and more current browsers it worked just fine.
The problem I have, is I have to support IE6, and this approach does work in IE6 but there's a slight issue. If you "grab" the scroll bar by left clicking and holding and continue to drag when the event is fired the scroll bar is prematurely released. Forcing the user to again click on the drag bar. It's a minor issue, but I want to know why?
I only intend to fire this event once ever, only when scrolling has initiated.
If a library or framework has solved this odd behavior, could you please show their source to which they address this?
Also, I think timing libraries etc. al for determining the "point at which they stopped scrolling" is way overkill for this.
It could be because IE is pausing to render the "tooltip". Instead of using display:none on your tooltip try to use visibility:hidden and then toggle to visibility:visible.

Disable horizontal scroll with JavaScript

Does anyone know if there is a way to disable the horizontal scrollbar using JavaScript?
I don't want to use overflow-x: hidden;.
Without using the perfectly workable overflow-x CSS property, you could resize the content to not require a scroll bar, through javascript or through HTML/CSS design.
You could also do this:
window.onscroll = function () {
window.scrollTo(0,0);
}
... which will detect any scrolling and automatically return the scroll to the top/left. It bears mentioning that doing something like this is sure to frustrate your users.
You're best served by creating an environment where unwanted UI elements are not present at all (through the CSS, through design). The approach mentioned above shows unnecessary UI elements (scroll bars) and then causes them to not work in a way that the user expects (scroll the page). You've "broken a contract" with the user - how can they trust that the rest of your web site or application will do expected things when the user makes a familiar action?
A way to prevent elements from scrolling down in jQuery:

Well, this does not actually prevent the scrolling, but it "scrolls back" to the top-left corner of an element, similar to Chris' solution which was created for the window instead of single elements. Remove the scrollTop or scrollLeft lines to suit your needs.
