ScrollTo... How to scroll to a certain number of pixels above a #? - javascript

Okay, my issue is that I have a fixed navigation bar occupying 115 pixels of space at the top of the screen. When you scroll "to" a section, the fixed bar is covering part of the section. What I need it to do is scroll roughly 130 pixels (115 px for the nav bar and a little extra room so it doesn't look too cramped) above the section it's supposed to scroll to.
I set up a quick and dirty JSFiddle so you can get the idea.
I assume I should be using offset or over in this, but they don't seem to do anything:
$('#navigation a').click(function(){//$.scrollTo works EXACTLY the same way, but scrolls the whole screen
$.scrollTo( this.hash, 1500, {easing:'elasout'});
});
Here is where I got the script from and examples if they may help you.
I would also love to eliminate the #hash links that get appended to the URLs to keep from flooding the back history. There's really no need for them since the navigation bar is fixed and you can access any section of the site just by clicking a new link on the nav. But that's not a primary concern.
Appreciate the help.

Quick example! NOTE: Not using the plugin from your example - Tested only in Firefox & Chrome
DEMO: http://jsfiddle.net/6DTLc/4/
$('ul#navigation').find('a').on('click', function(e) {
var
link_href = $(this).attr('href'),
$linkElem = $(link_href),
$linkElem_scroll = $linkElem.get(0) && $linkElem.position().top-115;
$('html, body')
.animate({scrollTop: $linkElem_scroll}, 'slow');
e.preventDefault();
});

How to make Bootstrap header that changes size on scroll down?

I've seen a few different threads seemingly about this but none of the answers in them have a working solution for me.
Here's what I want:
Big transparent header with a big logo on the top.
Small colored header with a small logo when user has scrolled past the topmost area.
I'm using navbar-fixed-top and and Bootstrap's scrollspy to add and remove certain classes from the header.
Here's why it hasn't worked so far:
$(window).scrollTop() doesn't return anything meaningful at all.
It seems wrong to change at a certain amount of pixels from the top anyway, since it can vary between screen resolutions.
Initiating a change based on what activate.bs.scrollspy captures works rather well except it shows the wrong header when I load the page for the first time.
It seems impossible to place a <div id="whatever"> at a certain spot and have the header change when scrollspy finds it. I've tried making the div 1px in dimension and placed at the absolute top of the page, but the scrollspy still identifies it from way off.
Here's my jQuery code at the moment, which is very imprecise AND shows the wrong header at the first load of the page (remember, you're not always at the top of the page when loading (reloading) the page!).
$(document).ready(function() {
$('body').scrollspy({ target: '.navbar-inverse' });
$('#main-header').on('activate.bs.scrollspy', function () {
var currentItem = $('.nav li.active > a').text();
var header = $('.navbar');
var logosmall = $('.small-brand');
var logobig = $('.big-brand');
if (currentItem == 'top' && header.hasClass('navbar-small')) {
header.removeClass('navbar-small');
header.addClass('navbar-big');
logosmall.css('display', 'none');
logobig.css('display', 'inline-block');
}
else if (currentItem != 'top' && header.hasClass('navbar-big')) {
header.removeClass('navbar-big');
header.addClass('navbar-small');
logobig.css('display', 'none');
logosmall.css('display', 'inline-block');
}
});
});
Wrap your code into window scroll event as mentioned below then only $(window).scrollTop() will work as you expecting.
$(window).scroll(function () {});
Here is a great example of your problem, it is a bit tricky to shrink your navbar but not impossible. You have to take into account a lot of things. I found this a while ago: http://www.bootply.com/109943
It is really strange that $(window).scrollTop() does not return anything by the way. What browser are you on? And your problem with reloading the browser:
$(window).load(function{
//logic to check how far scrolled
})

One page scroll wrong offset with floating menu bar

I am having an issue. Im using a one page design for a friend with a fixed floating menu on the top. The problem I encounter is that when I click on a link it scrolls down but the offset is not right. Most the of time it scrolls down a little too much covering the content below the menu. What I am trying to achieve is that the scrolling stops at the div being exactly below my menu bar. The other issue is that somehow it wont scroll down when the space between two sections is too narrow. It tries but somehow only moves a few pixels then stops. I can imagine that both are related to the offset issue.
Im sorry, english is not my native language.
Here is what I got so far. A standard scrolling function with window.location.hash. The target are divs spread across the site.
$(document).ready(function () {
$('a[href^="#"]').on('click', function (e) {
e.preventDefault();
var target = this.hash;
var t = $(this.hash).offset().top;
$('.wrapper').animate({
scrollTop: t,
}, 1000, function () {
window.location.hash = target;
});
});
});
You can see an example of the problem live: http://rolfvohs.com/
What I tried so far was using the add.class function to bind the div with an extra padding when a link is clicked. It does work in a way but creates an awkward space. I also tried placing the divs at different locations but that does not fix the job either, just messes it up further.
I would appreciate some insight.
window.location.hash = target;
moves the scroll by default to the div position and you are setting offset top before the hash change so first its changes the offset after that it move to div location.
first try after removing the line "window.location.hash = target;" from the code
or
move the "window.location.hash = target;" out side and above the "$('.wrapper').animate({})" it will work .

scrollTo not scrolling to the start of the element

I tried to implement the scrollTo funcion but the problem is that when i scroll i want the element that i scrolled to at the topof the screen not in the middle or somewhere else.
JsFiddle
here is the js funcion
$(document).ready(function () {
$(".scroll").click(function (event) {
$('html,body').animate({
scrollTop: $("#footer").offset().top
}, 500);
});
});
Your problem here is that there is not enough space at the bottom of the screen to scoll so that the targets ends at the top. The scrollbar is fully at the bottom.
Add a lot of whitespace at the end of the page, this will give more room for scrolling. When you do this, your code works just fine.
It is because your page isn't tall enough. To make a javascript function that automatically makes the page high enough (no matter what is in it) do:
$("body").height("100%");
$("html").height(($("body").height()) + 500);
see: http://jsfiddle.net/ZNV7G/1/
If you want to be extra sure you can replace the + 500 with * 2, but that will be a bit excessive in smaller documents.

Scroll to link with skrollr

I am using https://github.com/Prinzhorn/skrollr to animate the background of my site as I scroll. However I am also wanting to have my links scroll up and down the page like a normal single page site would do.
The problem is that both are working if I manually scroll the background changes, if I click the link the page scrolls to the correct place. The problem is that when I click the button the background doesn't scroll as well.
It seems like I am working with two different scroll functions and as a result they aren't working together and I need to use the same one.
Here is the code.
js - Scroll to link:
var $root = $('html, body');
$('a').click(function() {
var href = $.attr(this, 'href');
$root.animate({
scrollTop: $(href).offset().top
}, 500, function () {
window.location.hash = href;
});
return false;
});
js – Skrollr init
skrollr.init({
smoothScrolling: true,
forceHeight: true
});
I will try put together a fiddle to make it more clear but hopefully the answer is really simple.
If anyone else ever faces this problem the answer lies her: https://github.com/Prinzhorn/skrollr-menu
This will allow you to scroll to you internal links along with Skrollr animations. A HUGE plus and a very simple fix, you don't even need any of your own scrolling code just this and it will work with you links.
There's a way to do this, Skrollr has some methods very useful, in console, just type the variable contains skrollr, it will show some methods that you can use, one of them is "setScrollTop(int, bool)", so just call this method with the info you need, for example:
s.setScrollTop(9000, true)
Which means that I want it to scroll to the height position 9000. It works fine, you just need to know the height position where you need to go.

Jquery Sticky Nav Issue

I'm been trying to get my head around issue and seem to cant find some help.
http://fiddle.jshell.net/DQgkE/7/show/
The experience is a bit jumpy and buggy now- but what i will like is
1) When you scroll down the page. I want the Sticky Nav to be (disable,dropped off, stop) at a specific location(chapter-3) on the page and the user should have the ability to keep scrolling down.
2) When the user is scrolling back up, the code will stick the nav back and carry it up until the nav reaches the original position at the top.
Below is a starting point.
3) Currently is kinda of doing that but there's some huge jump going on when scrolling back up
http://imakewebthings.com/jquery-waypoints/#doc-disable
using disable, destroy, enable option will be nice.
This is a original experience cleaned: http://fiddle.jshell.net/DQgkE/1/show/
Thanks for the help in Advance.
I'm not sure how this plugin you used work, but I have a solution I wrote a while back that I wrote in jquery. It has few variables at the top, the item you wanted sticky, the item where you want it to stop, and the class to add when it becomes sticky and padding at the top and bottom. I only modified the javascript portion in this fork.
EDIT
I went ahead and fixed the original code. Solution without waypoint plugin is in comments.
Here is the result:
http://fiddle.jshell.net/Taks7/show/
I would recommend to use jQuery (that was a surprise, right?! :P)
$(document).ready(function() { //when document is ready
var topDist = $("nav").position(); //save the position of your navbar !Don't create that variable inside the scroll function!
$(document).scroll(function () { //every time users scrolls the page
var scroll = $(this).scrollTop(); //get the distance of the current scroll from the top of the window
if (scroll > topDist.top - *distance_nav_from_top*) { //user goes to the trigger position
$('nav').css({position:"fixed", width: "100%", top:"*distance_nav_from_top*"}); //set the effect
} else { //window is on top position, reaches trigger position from bottom-to-top scrolling
$('nav').css({position:"static", width:"initial", top:"initial"}); //set them with the values you used before scrolling
}
});
});
I really hope I helped!
