I'm trying to set an 'src' by calling a javascript function that returns the path like so:
<img src="getImagePath()" />
the function:
function getImagePath(){
return "images/image1.png";
}
But it doesn't seem to work. Anything I'm missing? Thanks to anyone pointing me in the right direction.

The src attribute takes an URL, not JavaScript. You might want to try
<img src="pixel.gif" onload="this.onload=null; this.src=getImagePath();" />

You can't do this. The src attribute of an img element can't be interpreted as javascript when the html is interpreted.
But you may do this :

Building on Eugen's answer, I wanted something self-contained (no id's, as inline as possible) that would not require a hosted pixel.gif image. I came up with a few possibilities:
One option would be to use a base64 encoded src URL instead (as small as possible). Note that data-uris are supported in IE8+:

A second option would be to use document.write to write the image tag directly with an inline script. Just put the below <script> instead of the <img>. Note that many consider document.write to be bad practice:

A third (perhaps even more hackish) option would be to forcibly break the image by supplying a null src, and (ab)use the onerror callback.
This works in IE11 and Chrome, but not Firefox:

This fourth option relies on a simple function that sets an <img> tag followed immediately by an inline <script> that sets the image's src via JavaScript:

Summary: I'm just ideating. Each option has different implications and requirements -- they're all workarounds, and should be tested thoroughly for your specific use case. Personally I think the first option (base64 URI) is the most solid (if you ignore old IE browsers, which I happily can).

How to use string resources in html files [duplicate]

I have 2 HTML files, suppose a.html and b.html. In a.html I want to include b.html.
In JSF I can do it like that:

It means that inside a.xhtml file, I can include b.xhtml.
How can we do it in *.html file?
In my opinion the best solution uses jQuery:

Expanding lolo's answer, here is a little more automation if you have to include a lot of files. Use this JS code:

My solution is similar to the one of lolo above. However, I insert the HTML code via JavaScript's document.write instead of using jQuery:

The reason for me against using jQuery is that jQuery.js is ~90kb in size, and I want to keep the amount of data to load as small as possible.
In order to get the properly escaped JavaScript file without much work, you can use the following sed command:
sed 's/\\/\\\\/g;s/^.*$/&\\/g;s/'\''/\\'\''/g' b.html > escapedB.html

Since old browsers don't support seamless, you should add some css to fix it:

Keep in mind that for browsers that don't support seamless, if you click a link in the iframe it will make the frame go to that url, not the whole window. A way to get around that is to have all links have target="_parent", tho the browser support is "good enough".

As an alternative, if you have access to the .htaccess file on your server, you can add a simple directive that will allow php to be interpreted on files ending in .html extension.

Now you can use a simple php script to include other files such as:

This is what helped me. For adding a block of html code from b.html to a.html, this should go into the head tag of a.html:

It relies on the HTML5 data-* attributes and therefore is very generic in that is uses jQuery's for-each function to get every .class matching "load-html" and uses its respective 'data-source' attribute to load the content:

Most of the solutions works but they have issue with jquery:
The issue is following code $(document).ready(function () { alert($("#includedContent").text()); } alerts nothing instead of alerting included content.

For example, on the page you import HTML block like that:

The importer replaces the directive with the loaded HTML pretty much like SSI
These directives will be served automatically as soon as you load this small JavaScript:

It will process the imports when DOM is ready automatically. Besides, it exposes an API that you can use to run manually, to get logs and so on. Enjoy :)

Did you try a iFrame injection?
It injects the iFrame in the document and deletes itself (it is supposed to be then in the HTML DOM)

html5rocks.com has a very good tutorial on this stuff, and this might be a little late, but I myself didn't know this existed. w3schools also has a way to do this using their new library called w3.js. The thing is, this requires the use of a web server and and HTTPRequest object. You can't actually load these locally and test them on your machine. What you can do though, is use polyfills provided on the html5rocks link at the top, or follow their tutorial. With a little JS magic, you can do something like this:

This will make the link (Can change to be the wanted link element if already set), set the import (unless you already have it), and then append it. It will then from there take that and parse the file in HTML, and then append it to the desired element under a div. This can all be changed to fit your needs from the appending element to the link you are using. I hope this helped, it may irrelevant now if newer, faster ways have come out without using libraries and frameworks such as jQuery or W3.js.
UPDATE: This will throw an error saying that the local import has been blocked by CORS policy. Might need access to the deep web to be able to use this because of the properties of the deep web. (Meaning no practical use)

There is no direct HTML solution for the task for now. Even HTML Imports (which is permanently in draft) will not do the thing, because Import != Include and some JS magic will be required anyway.
I recently wrote a VanillaJS script that is just for inclusion HTML into HTML, without any complications.
Just place in your a.html

You can do that with JavaScript's library jQuery like this:

Please note that banner.html should be located under the same domain your other pages are in otherwise your webpages will refuse the banner.html file due to Cross-Origin Resource Sharing policies.
Also, please note that if you load your content with JavaScript, Google will not be able to index it so it's not exactly a good method for SEO reasons.

I am trying to load an external HTML page (common navigation) into my current HTML page. I tried the load function but it is deprecated. Can you tell me another way to include it? I am not using any server.

Take both file pages in same directory then you can use simple button on link to use external file. for example

REMEMBER! Due to some limitations in html-doctypes you cannot inlude a .html-file into an .html-file. You have to use another format as .shtml where you can inlude your .html-files. You can include .html into your .shtmlfile. This was also what .shtml was originally created for.
This is because it is part of the XHTML (Dynamic XML HTML)...
To change a file
Your approach on the HTML is correct and also your JS. I include a lot of html-files containing texts there.
My approach is that when a page is loaded some text will be loaded with the <!--#include virtual="" --> inside a <div>. Below JS is used to change the content in the <div>. As Daniel Beck stated below: "...at least in Apache the server needs to be configured to check particular file extensions...".
You configure your file in your .htaccess-file. But ONLY do this if you know what you are doing.
Some (newer?) servers have a default setup of which you don't need to alter the .htaccess-file if you want to be able to include .html-files. At least you are able to include .html-files into .shtml-files.
I have included a Mimetype converter which tells the browser how it should read the file. For txt/html I have told the script that it should use the character encoding ISO-8859-1. Others as UTF-8 could also be used. This depends on your and your receivers native language.
Take into consideration to use the e.preventDefault();. With this i tells the browser NOT to see this as navigation link and will therefore only load the content in the <div>.

How to call external JavaScript function in HTML

I have a small chunk of code I can't seem to get working. I am building a website and using JavaScript for the first time. I have my JavaScript code in an external file 'Marq_Msg.js' which looks like this:

The 'logo' div is a CSS piece that I'm trying to marquee inside of. If I put the code embedded inside the 'head' tag and call it, it works perfectly! There are a few other things id like to do with this code (like space the messages out a little) but I can't get the code to work in the first place. I've also tried adding:

in the 'head' tag with a separate call, that was a no go. I also tried instead using:

If a <script> has a src then the text content of the element will be not be executed as JS (although it will appear in the DOM).
You need to use multiple script elements.
a <script> to load the external script
a <script> to hold your inline code (with the call to the function in the external script)
scroll_messages();
In Layman terms, you need to include external js file in your HTML file & thereafter you could directly call your JS method written in an external js file from HTML page.

Result :
If anyone still has the reference error is probably because you are loading your Javascript with defer, or it's in the bottom of the body so when the function gets called your function still doesn't exist.

Variables in java script

I am developing an extension in which i need to generate URL of website differently.Here is the structure of my code i am using

URL is not set at the time you're setting the iframes src. If you were to invoke genURL first, then your code would work. It would be far better, however, to design your code as such:

You create a function that assigns a value to URL, but you never call the function, so the code is created but not executed. There're a couple of ways to fix this. One is David's way. Another is to assign a value to URL outside of the function:

Can you make a javascript function replace itself on the page with custom html?

I have some javascript which will create some sort of widget on a page. I will be giving this snippet to clients so I want them to have to do very little.
The most obvious solution which I have work right now looks something like this:

Make widget basically looks for the divContent div and fill it with my widget's html.

Yes. When the <script> element is reached, assuming it is not a defer or async script, it will be the last script element in the page so far. So you can say, either inline or in an external script:

You have to have MakeWidget defined somewhere, right? Presumably this is going to be in an external script. Why not just have the external script source just attach itself to the divContent using the window.onload method?

Your makewidget.js code could then look like this:
window.onload = function() { MakeWidget('divContent') }
There may some issues with other scripts loading and probably some cross-browser compatibility issues but that should get you pointed in the right direction.
So you want to have a script element which replaces itself with div.
Your initial code is like this:
<div id="divContent"></div>
<script>
MakeWidget('divContent');
</script>
You can rewrite it like this (I am using JQuery):
<script id="scriptContent">
$('#scriptContent').after('<div id="divContent"></div>');
MakeWidget('divContent');
$('#scriptContent').remove();
</script>
I have not tried it though!
I would think it would be possible to do it as follows:
<div id="divWidgets">
<script type="text/javascript">
MakeWidgets("divWidgets");
</script>
</div>
The end result should be (if I understand your description correctly) that MakeWidgets will replace the contents of the DIV, which, in this case, is the script itself.
