JQuery $.ajax() post - data in a java servlet - javascript

I want to send data to a java servlet for processing. The data will have a variable length and be in key/value pairs:
{ A1984 : 1, A9873 : 5, A1674 : 2, A8724 : 1, A3574 : 3, A1165 : 5 }
The data doesn't need to be formated this way, it is just how I have it now.
var saveData = $.ajax({
type: "POST",
url: "someaction.do?action=saveData",
data: myDataVar.toString(),
dataType: "text",
success: function(resultData){
alert("Save Complete");
}
});
saveData.error(function() { alert("Something went wrong"); });
The $.ajax() function works fine as I do get an alert for "Save Complete". My dilemna is on the servlet. How do I retrieve the data? I tried to use a HashMap like this...
HashMap hm = new HashMap();
hm.putAll(request.getParameterMap());
...but hm turns out to be null which I am guessing means the .getParameterMap() isn't finding the key/value pairs. Where am I going wrong or what am I missing?

You don't want a string, you really want a JS map of key value pairs. E.g., change:
data: myDataVar.toString(),
with:
var myKeyVals = { A1984 : 1, A9873 : 5, A1674 : 2, A8724 : 1, A3574 : 3, A1165 : 5 }
var saveData = $.ajax({
type: 'POST',
url: "someaction.do?action=saveData",
data: myKeyVals,
dataType: "text",
success: function(resultData) { alert("Save Complete") }
});
saveData.error(function() { alert("Something went wrong"); });
jQuery understands key value pairs like that, it does NOT understand a big string. It passes it simply as a string.
UPDATE: Code fixed.

Simple method to sending data using java script and ajex call.
First right your form like this
<form id="frm_details" method="post" name="frm_details">
<input id="email" name="email" placeholder="Your Email id" type="text" />
<button class="subscribe-box__btn" type="submit">Need Assistance</button>
</form>
javascript logic target on form id #frm_details after sumbit
$(function(){
$("#frm_details").on("submit", function(event) {
event.preventDefault();
var formData = {
'email': $('input[name=email]').val() //for get email
};
console.log(formData);
$.ajax({
url: "/tsmisc/api/subscribe-newsletter",
type: "post",
data: formData,
success: function(d) {
alert(d);
}
});
});
})
General
Request URL:https://test.abc
Request Method:POST
Status Code:200
Remote Address:13.76.33.57:443
From Data
email:abc#invalid.ts

you can use ajax post as :
$.ajax({
url: "url",
type: "POST",
dataType: "json",
contentType: "application/json; charset=utf-8",
data: JSON.stringify({ name: 'value1', email: 'value2' }),
success: function (result) {
// when call is sucessfull
},
error: function (err) {
// check the err for error details
}
}); // ajax call closing

For the time being I am going a different route than I previous stated. I changed the way I am formatting the data to:
&A2168=1&A1837=5&A8472=1&A1987=2
On the server side I am using getParameterNames() to place all the keys into an Enumerator and then iterating over the Enumerator and placing the keys and values into a HashMap. It looks something like this:
Enumeration keys = request.getParameterNames();
HashMap map = new HashMap();
String key = null;
while(keys.hasMoreElements()){
key = keys.nextElement().toString();
map.put(key, request.getParameter(key));
}

To get the value from the servlet from POST command, you can follow the approach as explained on this post by using request.getParameter(key) format which will return the value you want.

Unable to pass formData with other parameters in jQuery

I am trying to pass formData along with other parameters to a PHP script.
Using the $.post method, I was getting an 'Illegal Invocation' error. So I abandoned the $.post method and went to $.ajax method.
As follows:
$('#uploadBtn').on('click', function()
{
var formData = new FormData($('#uploadfile')[0]); // the form data is uploaded file
var booking = $('#bookingNum').val();
var partner = $('#partnerCode').val();
var parameters =
{
formData:formData,
booking:booking,
partner:partner
}
$.ajax({
url: 'process/customer.php',
data: parameters, // <- this may be wrong
async: false,
contentType: false,
processData: false,
cache: false,
type: 'POST',
success: function(data)
{
console.log(data);
},
error: function(jqHHR, textStatus, errorThrown)
{
console.log('fail: ' + errorThrown);
}
});
});
On the PHP side, I'm trying to get the parameters object like so:
<?php
if(isset($_POST['parameters']))
{
echo "Hello";
$value = $_POST['parameters'];
// I can get the other 2 parameters like this
$company = htmlspecialchars(trim($value['booking']));
$partner = htmlspecialchars(trim($value['partner']));
// not sure how to get the uploaded file information
}
?>
Basically, I am uploading a file to be saved to a directory. But the problem is, I cannot send anything over to the PHP side. I am getting this warning:
"jquery.js:2 [Deprecation] Synchronous XMLHttpRequest on the main thread is deprecated because of its detrimental effects to the end user's experience. For more help, check https://xhr.spec.whatwg.org/."
I need to be able to send the 'parameters' object over to the PHP script, then access it for processing.
How can I achieve this using the $.ajax method? Then how do I access the formData once on the PHP side?
The parameters is the object you are POSTing. the key value pairs will be based on it's properties. Try accessing them like $_POST['formData'] and $_POST['booking'].
Also... please rework your code to remove the async:false ... TBH this should never have been put into jQuery and is absolutely terrible. Don't feel bad, it's the first thing every newcomer tries when they first start using ajax, myself included. You're going to cause the UI thread to hang for the duration, preventing all user interaction during the call.
EDIT
I didn't realize you are trying to post a file at first, so this is not a complete answer as I don't think you are accessing it correctly. But The important part of this answer is that there is no parameters index of $_POST (which is why not even your echo "hello" is coming back).
if you POST an object that looks like
{
key1 : "value1",
key2 : "value2"
}
they will come through to php as
$_POST['key1'];//"value1";
$_POST['key2'];//"value2";
important to note, files posted to the server are typically found in the $_FILES superglobal. (don't know if AJAX changes that, but I imagine not)
EDIT2
Combining the two... this is the general idea. Make your html + JS look like...
$('#form').on('submit', function()
{
var form_data = new FormData();
form_data.append("file", document.getElementById('fileInput').files[0]);
var booking = $('#bookingNum').val();
var partner = $('#partnerCode').val();
form_data.append("booking ",booking);
form_data.append("partner",partner);
$.ajax({
url: 'process/customer.php',
method:"POST",
data: form_data,
contentType: false,
cache: false,
processData: false,
success: function(data)
{
console.log(data);
},
error: function(jqHHR, textStatus, errorThrown)
{
console.log('fail: ' + errorThrown);
}
});
return false;//prevent default form submission
});
<form id='form'>
<input type='file' id='fileInput' />
<label for='bookingNum'>Booking Num: </label>
<input type='text' id='bookingNum' name='bookingNum' />
<label for='partnerCode'>Partner Code:</label>
<input type='text' id='partnerCode' name='partnerCode' />
<button id='uploadBtn'>Submit</button>
</form>
and try it with your php code like
<?php
if($_POST['bookingNum']){
var_dump($_POST['bookingNum']);
}
if($_POST['partnerCode']){
var_dump($_POST['partnerCode']);
}
if($_FILES['file']){
var_dump($_FILES['file']);
}
$('#uploadBtn').on('click', function()
{
var form_data = new FormData();
form_data.append("file", document.getElementById('ID').files[0]);
var booking = $('#bookingNum').val();
var partner = $('#partnerCode').val();
form_data.append("booking ",booking);
form_data.append("partner",partner);
$.ajax({
url: 'process/customer.php',
method:"POST",
data: form_data,
contentType: false,
cache: false,
processData: false,
success: function(data)
{
console.log(data);
},
error: function(jqHHR, textStatus, errorThrown)
{
console.log('fail: ' + errorThrown);
}
});
});

Ajax wont call MVC controller method

I have an AJAX function in my javascript to call my controller method. When I run the AJAX function (on a button click) it doesn't hit my break points in my method. It all runs both the success: and error:. What do I need to change to make it actually send the value from $CSV.text to my controller method?
JAVASCRIPT:
// Convert JSON to CSV & Display CSV
$CSV.text(ConvertToCSV(JSON.stringify(data)));
$.ajax({
url: '#Url.Action("EditFence", "Configuration")',
type: "POST",
dataType: "json",
contentType: "application/json; charset=utf-8",
data: { value : $CSV.text() },
success: function(response){
alert(response.responseText);
},
error: function(response){
alert(response.responseText);
}
});
CONTROLLER:
[HttpPost]
public ActionResult EditFence(string value)
{
try
{
WriteNewFenceFile(value);
Response.StatusCode = (int)HttpStatusCode.OK;
var obj = new
{
success = true,
responseText = "Zones have been saved."
};
return Json(obj, JsonRequestBehavior.AllowGet);
}
catch (Exception ex)
{
var obj = new
{
success = false,
responseText = "Zone save encountered a problem."
};
return Json(obj, JsonRequestBehavior.AllowGet);
}
}
RESULT
You should change the data you POST to your controller and the Action you POST to:
data: { value = $CSV.text() }
url: '#Url.Action("EditFence", "Configuration")'
The $CSV is possible a jquery Object related to an html element. You need to read it's text property and pass this as data, instead of the jQuery object.
Doing the above changes you would achieve to make the correct POST. However, there is another issue, regarding your Controller. You Controller does not respond to the AJAX call after doing his work but issues a redirection.
Update
it would be helpful for you to tell me how the ActionResult should
look, in terms of a return that doesn't leave the current view but
rather just passes back that it was successful.
The Action to which you POST should be refactored like below. As you see we use a try/catch, in order to capture any exception. If not any exception is thrown, we assume that everything went ok. Otherwise, something wrong happened. In the happy case we return a response with a successful message, while in the bad case we return a response with a failure message.
[HttpPost]
public ActionResult EditFence(string value)
{
try
{
WriteNewFenceFile(value);
Response.StatusCode = (int)HttpStatusCode.OK;
var obj = new
{
success = true,
responseText= "Zones have been saved."
};
return Json(obj, JsonRequestBehavior.AllowGet));
}
catch(Exception ex)
{
// log the Exception...
var obj = new
{
success = false,
responseText= "Zone save encountered a problem."
};
return Json(obj, JsonRequestBehavior.AllowGet));
}
}
Doing this refactor, you can utilize it in the client as below:
$CSV.text(ConvertToCSV(JSON.stringify(data)));
$.ajax({
url: '#Url.Action("EditFence", "Configuration")',
type: "POST",
dataType: "json",
contentType: "application/json; charset=utf-8",
data: { value = JSON.stringify($CSV.text()) },
success: function(response){
alert(response.responseText);
},
error: function(response){
alert(response.responseText);
}
});
If your javascript is actually in a JS file and not a CSHTML file, then this will be emitted as a string literal:
#Url.Action("EditFile", "Configuration")
Html Helpers don't work in JS files... so you'll need to point to an actual url, like '/configuration/editfile'
Also, it looks like you're posting to a method called EditFile, but the name of your method in the controller code snippet is EditFence, so that will obviously be an issue too.
you dont need to add contentType the default application/x-www-form-urlencoded will work because it looks like you have a large csv string. So your code should be like this example
$(document).ready(function() {
// Create Object
var items = [
{ name: "Item 1", color: "Green", size: "X-Large" },
{ name: "Item 2", color: "Green", size: "X-Large" },
{ name: "Item 3", color: "Green", size: "X-Large" }
];
// Convert Object to JSON
var $CSV = $('#csv');
$CSV.text(ConvertToCSV(JSON.stringify(items)));
$.ajax({
url: '#Url.Action("EditFence", "Configuration")',
type: "POST",
dataType: "json",
data: {value:$CSV.text()},
success: function(response) {
alert(response.responseText);
},
error: function(response) {
alert(response.responseText);
}
});
Your problem is on these lines:
success: alert("Zones have been saved."),
error: alert("Zone save encountered a problem.")
This effectively running both functions immediately and sets the return values of these functions to the success and error properties. Try using an anonymous callback function.
success: function() {
alert("Zones have been saved.");
},
error: function() {
alert("Zone save encountered a problem.")
}

Sending JS array via AJAX to laravel not working

I have a javascript array which I want to send to a controller via an ajax get method.
My javascript looks like this:
var requestData = JSON.stringify(commentsArray);
console.log(requestData);
//logs correct json object
var request;
request = $.ajax({
url: "/api/comments",
method: "GET",
dataType: "json",
data: requestData
});
I can tell that my requestData is good because I am logging it and it looks right.
and the controller is being accessed correctly (i know this because I can log info there and I can return a response which I can log in my view after the response is returned).
when trying to access requestData I am getting an empty array.
My controller function that is called looks like:
public function index(Request $request)
{
Log::info($request);
//returns array (
//)
//i.e. an empty array
Log::info($request->input);
//returns ""
Log::info($_GET['data']);
//returns error with message 'Undefined index: data '
Log::info(Input::all());
//returns empty array
return Response::json(\App\Comment::get());
}
And I am getting back the response fine.
How can I access the requestData?
Dave's solution in the comments worked:
Changed ajax request to:
request = $.ajax({
url: "/api/comments",
method: "GET",
dataType: "json",
data: {data : requestData}
});
This is how push item in an array using jQuery:
function ApproveUnapproveVisitors(approveUnapprove){
var arrUserIds = [];
$(".visitors-table>tbody>tr").each(function(index, tr){
arrUserIds.push($(this).find('a').attr('data-user-id'));
});
$.ajax({
type:'POST',
url:'/dashboard/whitelistedusers/' + approveUnapprove,
headers: {'X-CSRF-TOKEN': $('meta[name="csrf-token"]').attr('content')},
data: {data : arrUserIds},
success:function(data){
alert(data.success);
},
error: function(e){
//alert(e.error);
}
});
}
And this is how I access them in my controller
//Approve all visitors
function ApproveAllWhitelistedUsers(Request $request){
$arrToSend = request('data');
foreach ($arrToSend as $visitor) {
$vsitor = User::findOrFail($visitor);
$vsitor->update(['is_approved'=> '1']);
}
return response()->json(['success'=>'Accounts approved successfully!']);
}

ajax - sending data as json to php server and receiving response

I'm trying to grasp more than I should at once.
Let's say I have 2 inputs and a button, and on button click I want to create a json containing the data from those inputs and send it to the server.
I think this should do it, but I might be wrong as I've seen a lot of different (poorly explained) methods of doing something similar.
var Item = function(First, Second) {
return {
FirstPart : First.val(),
SecondPart : Second.val(),
};
};
$(document).ready(function(){
$("#send_item").click(function() {
var form = $("#add_item");
if (form) {
item = Item($("#first"), $("#second"));
$.ajax ({
type: "POST",
url: "post.php",
data: { 'test' : item },
success: function(result) {
console.log(result);
}
});
}
});
});
In PHP I have
class ClientData
{
public $First;
public $Second;
public function __construct($F, $S)
{
$this->First = F;
$this->Second = S;
}
}
if (isset($_POST['test']))
{
// do stuff, get an object of type ClientData
}
The problem is that $_POST['test'] appears to be an array (if I pass it to json_decode I get an error that says it is an array and if I iterate it using foreach I get the values that I expect to see).
Is that ajax call correct? Is there something else I should do in the PHP bit?
You should specify a content type of json and use JSON.stringify() to format the data payload.
$.ajax ({
type: "POST",
url: "post.php",
data: JSON.stringify({ test: item }),
contentType: "application/json; charset=utf-8",
success: function(result) {
console.log(result);
}
});
When sending an AJAX request you need to send valid JSON. You can send an array, but you need form valid JSON before you send your data to the server. So in your JavaScript code form valid JSON and send that data to your endpoint.
In your case the test key holds a value containing a JavaScript object with two attributes. JSON is key value coding in string format, your PHP script does not not how to handle JavaScript (jQuery) objects.
https://jsfiddle.net/s1hkkws1/15/
This should help out.
For sending raw form data:
js part:
$.ajax ({
type: "POST",
url: "post.php",
data: item ,
success: function(result) {
console.log(result);
}
});
php part:
..
if (isset($_POST['FirstPart']) && isset($_POST['SecondPart']))
{
$fpart = $_POST['FirstPart'];
$spart = $_POST['SecondPart'];
$obj = new ClientData($fpart, $spart);
}
...
For sending json string:
js part:
$.ajax ({
type: "POST",
url: "post.php",
data: {'test': JSON.stringify(item)},
success: function(result) {
console.log(result);
}
});
php part:
..
if (isset($_POST['test']))
{
$json_data = $_POST['test'];
$json_arr = json_decode($json_data, true);
$fpart = $json_arr['FirstPart'];
$spart = $json_arr['SecondPart'];
$obj = new ClientData($fpart, $spart);
}
...
Try send in ajax:
data: { 'test': JSON.stringify(item) },
instead:
data: { 'test' : item },

Unable to get value from json object

I am trying to get a value from a json object after making an ajax call. Not sure what I am doing wrong it seems straight forward but not able to get the data
The data that comes back looks like this
{"data":"[{\"Id\":3,\"Name\":\"D\\u0027Costa\"}]"}
The code, removed some of the code
.ajax({
type: 'POST',
url: "http://localhost:1448/RegisterDetails/",
dataType: 'json',
data: { "HomeID": self.Id, "Name": $("#txtFamilyName").val()},
success: function (result) {
console.log(result.data); //<== the data show here like above
alert(result.data.Id); //<==nothing show
},
error: function (xhr, ajaxOptions, thrownError) {
}
});
I tried in the Chrome console like this
obj2 = {}
Object {}
obj2 = {"data":"[{\"Id\":3,\"Name\":\"D\\u0027Costa\"}]"}
Object {data: "[{"Id":3,"Name":"D\u0027Costa"}]"}
obj2.data
"[{"Id":3,"Name":"D\u0027Costa"}]"
obj2.data.Id
undefined
obj2.Id
undefined
Update
The line that solved the issue as suggested here is
var retValue = JSON.parse(result.data)[0]
Now I can used
retValue.Name
to get the value
Actually, looking at this, my best guess is that you're missing JSON.parse()
.ajax({
type: 'POST',
url: "http://localhost:1448/RegisterDetails/",
dataType: 'json',
data: { "HomeID": self.Id, "Name": $("#txtFamilyName").val()},
success: function (result) {
var javascriptObject = JSON.parse(result);
console.log(javascriptObject ); //<== the data show here like above
alert(javascriptObject.Id); //<==nothing show
},
error: function (xhr, ajaxOptions, thrownError) {
}
});
I also find that doing ajax requests like this is better:
var result = $.ajax({
url: "someUrl",
data: { some: "data" },
method: "POST/GET"
});
result.done(function (data, result) {
if (result == "success") { // ajax success
var data = JSON.parse(data);
//do something here
}
});
For clarity it just looks better, also copying and pasting into different functions as well is better.
The id property is in the first element of the data-array. So, alert(result.data[0].Id) should give the desired result. Just for the record: there is no such thing as a 'JSON-object'. You can parse a JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) string to a Javascript Object, which [parsing] supposedly is handled by the .ajax method here.
The data field is just a string, you should parse it to a JSON object with JSON.parse(result.data), since data is now an array you will need to need to use an index [0] to have access to the object. Know you will be able to get the Id property.
JSON.parse(result.data)[0].Id
