Animating an image's perspective using jQuery? - javascript

I was wondering if there was any jQuery library that will allow us to change the perspective of an image.
I know that modern browsers already support vendor specific rotate() in CSS but it doesn't quite give the desired result. Most of them just vary the width of the image but doesn't shrink the height of one side and increase the height of one side to produce the effect that you are viewing the image from another angle.
Any more details that you may need, please tell me. Thanks!

I already tried transforms but they don't increase the height of the side that is moving towards you and decrease the one that is moving away from you. And I don't do full rotations, i just tilt the image a few degrees so the change in height has to really be there

CSS3 has 2D-transforms and 3D-transforms. While the first is well supported (by all browsers, not by all used versions [1]) the second is currently only supported by mozilla and webkit [2]. Both features mostly need vendor-prefixes.
And of course you can animate them with jQuery, if you want to.

Jquery responsive image resizing method that maintains the quality

I have a background image which is responsive. It adapts to the container with the background-size: 100% method which keeps the aspect ratio. However, for older browsers like Firefox 18 and below and all versions of internet explorer I get a bad image when scaled (jagged or blurry). I tried the css bicubic interpolation (internet explorer) and "image-rendering" (firefox) fix yet no effect what can be observed.
My question is: is there a jquery or javascript way that does the same job while preserving the quality? Like a browser independent scaling method. Googled but found nothing.
I know this is not ideal in terms of speed and I should instead do the resizing in my image editing software but this is not an option in my scenario.

The only good solution I found to provide the best possible quality is by using a css responsive method.
For latest chrome & safari you have the new HTML attribute SRCSET.
For olders browsers, you can use your images as a div background and change it dynamically with CSS only.
For very old browsers, the only way is to grab images with different sizes using JS...

Angular + ui-sortable lists: CTRL-mousewheel zoom vs normal mousewheel zoom

My understanding is that CTRL-mousewheel zooms are an accessibility feature, built into the browser in question (I am currently testing in Chrome and Opera, both if which use the CTRL- zoom).
This won't ever really be needed for accessibility, however, as the app will not be for the general public. And CTRL-wheel zoom has a nice benefit out-of-box as compared with standard mousewheel zoom over elements: It seems that Angular ui-sortables work perfectly at any zoom/scale.
Unfortunately, from other answers I've found on SO, there is no way, when using CTRL-wheel, to zoom selectively : the browser can only zoom everything. For me, this includes position:fixed overlays scaling at the same time as the main viewport, which is no good.
So I set up some code for scrolling as per whichever element the mouse cursor is over, eg. scale the main viewport using the mousewheel, only if the mouse if over that viewport element.
The problem is that ui-sortable does not behave correctly, when using it for only a single element. I've used scale with transform-origin set at 50% 50% but still, when I drag the ui-sortables at any scale other than 1:1, they appear way off to the left. Any ideas on how to begin to tackle this?
This isn't a problem in Angular's sortable adaptation, rather it's an issue in the underlying jQuery-ui 1.9.2 positioning functions around line 4000 (_generatePosition or maybe one of the others). I believe that as the browser does not modify the actual dimension values during scale or zoom, and the formulae provided in that library do not account for scaling (that I can see), there is no easy fix, since jQuery ui.sortable needs scale-accurate values to calculate correct displacements. (I tried modifying the formula to account for this, but without success.)
The simplest workaround for the present is to manually change the width() / height() of your individual list elements, as seen here. This may require being selective about just what you scale using width() / height(), and what you change using scale (which is generally easier).

2 part CSS "wallpaper" that resizes to browser

My designer believes this cannot be done, however it seems possible to me. (Although I have limited CSS experience). However, he also said the background couldn't be fixed, and stackoverflow has proved his wrong in the past; so I question his knowledge.
JQuery can be used if this cannot be done in pure CSS.
The top half will be a gradient that has full flexible to skew left, right, up, down without much distortion. The bottom half is an image that is ideally made for the 1280 x 1024 resolution (as this is the most popular browser display resolution). Then depending on the requirements needed it will sketch and skew to whatever size it needs. Still allowing all of the image to be seen.
The ration between the top half and bottom half is always 50% 50% independent of browser resolution.
I would also like if both the top and bottom parts are fixed.
In a perfect world (one without IE), id like to do this with css3 gradients and multiple backgrounds in 1 DIV. However, because IE9 isnt out yet, I think the best way to approach it would be 2 divs in a DIV container and using a PNG repeating background for the top div.
It should be noted I am going to use css3pie.com to allow some CSS3 for IE6-8 (but I dont want to rely on it, unless 100% proven)
Is this possible with just CSS? How would you do it?
If not possible with just CSS, is there a way I can get JavaScript/JQuery to aid?
I am thinking a base of 1280 x 1024 isn't the best idea because it seems to have an odd radio.

It looks good in 1280 x 1024...now its just getting the whole resizing of the top DIV to be 50% so the image is 50%.
I'd still like ALL of the water to be seen, because I like the look of the rocks at the bottom. However, I am open to alternative ideas that don't accomplish what I want 100%, but come close.

How about using the top gradient as the true CSS2 background and then just putting a <img> at the bottom of it to resize? Perhaps that will allow for CSS2 ability. I am reference some work-around techniques here: A list apart

I am still looking for results that work on IE6 and also don't cause Internet explorer to lag. I am setting a bounty of 50 to help attract more attention.
I have successfully came up with 2 ways to do this:

Using CSS3 background-size I was able to set 2 div elements to on top of each other with min-height: 50% and then using background-size: 100% 50% they successfully accomplish what I am looking for.
This method was just a proof of concept, as IE6-8 does not support background-size, I didn't pursue tweaking this method perfectly. As it stands, it currently messes up when you scroll despite have background-attachment: fixed;. I ditched this CSS3 method in order to look for better methods using CSS tricks...

Following the examples I found from A List Apart (Article | Example1 | Example2). I used Technique #2 from Example 1, and I was able to emulate what I wanted to do using just CSS2. (I am not 100% sure how or why this works, but it does)
Because I am also going to use CSS3PIE to give IE6-8 CSS3 the ability to do linear gradients, border-radius, and box-shadow; I opted to use a linear gradient instead of an image for the top background.
Problems
CSS2 Method from Technique #2, Example 1 does not work with IE6 Correctly
Creates excessive lag in all current Internet Explorers
It can be done with CSS only. No PIEs necessary. Just an IE6 bug and some filter magic.

Do this using raphaeljs. Create a background DIV that becomes a canvas, draw a rect to 50% of the page height (if using jquery then use $(window).resize() to monitor for a window resize and $(window).height() to get the 50% into pixels).
You can fill in the raphealjs rect with specifing it's fill value to something like fill: "90-#000000-#ffffff"
As for the image:
Place the image using raphealjs' image OR just embed it using HTML and update it's height-scale using jquery as mentioned above.
I've done something like this just recently using about 10 lines of code.
Also: Change your water.png, it's about 275kb, where as the next largest file on your page (the css) is like 1.5kb.
If you want to keep the horizon of the water at 50% on your screen, I would suggest a simpler method;
Create an image (probably about 1280 wide) in Photoshop of water on bottom and gradient on top. Fade the top gradient into a solid light blue(#68b for example). Fade the left, right and bottom of the image into the same solid color(#68b).
Set the background of your page as follows;

In your case, you'll probably want to apply the background to #wdth-100 instead of html, but it all depends on which element you want to put your background on.

You should probably use a CSS solution for normal browsers and the JS for IE.

The pragmatic answer would seem to be to do it using multiple divs with their own background, all of which would be positioned absolutely and behind everything else using z-index.
I know that's not the clean markup solution with a single div with some magic CSS, but this is a tricky problem in pure CSS in any browser, and almost certainly impossible if you need to support IE6.
An even more pragmatic answer would be to say "I'll support IE6 as far as I can, but if it can't support my lovely background effect then that's just tough luck for anyone still using it".

Rotate image clockwise or anticlockwise inside a div using javascript

HI, Is there a way by which I can rotate an image inside a div clockwise or anticlockwise.
I have a main fixed width div[overflow set to hidden] with images loaded from database. There is a scroll bar for showing the images inside the div. When image is clicked then I need to show the rotating animation either in clockwise or anticlockwise direction.
I have done it using Matrix filter. I would like to know whether it is possible to be done in IE only without using any filters.

If you're using jQuery, jQueryRotate is a small (less than 3Kb minified+gzipped) plugin that rotates images:

The only way I can think of for rotating images on the client-side in IE is using filters. For somewhat recent versions the other browsers you can use the <canvas> control.
Your alternative is to use a server-side script to rotate the image. Then you can send the information on how to rotate it with JavaScript (i.e. generate a path to the image such as /rotate?image=img.jpg&amount=90)
CSS3 supports rotation, but it isn't widely supported.
As you asked for JavaScript solution, here's one, but I don't think you can get smooth images.
There is other way to rotate images without any filters / html5.. it's nasty and useless in real world, but possible.
You can store your image as array of pixels, for javascript. Write function to perform rotation with it and encode it to base64 datauri, bmp could be easy and replace image.src with it.
There will be some limitation about filesize and support in old browser and of course terrible performance..

Web: solution for image rotate and zoom

I have a web page which displays a large image, for example a page from a magazine. I have no control over the image size or orientation. It's possible that the image may need to be rotated by the user to orient it correctly.
Are there any Javascript or Flash solutions that will allow someone to rotate and zoom a given image? Ideally I'd specify a single image and the dimensions to use when displaying it. If the image is larger than those dimensions, the user could zoom in and view a portion of the image in greater detail.
I've seen a couple of solutions for rotating images with straight Javascript and CSS. Raphael would do the trick. There is apparently even an example featuring rotating an image. (it uses SVG but is support on all major browsers)
This one is not cross browser, but is an interesting exercise nevertheless.
As for flash rotation etc...
For rotating images, I used jquery-rotate and it works very well.
It is not totally cross-browser, it doesn't work with IE6 (and probably other old browsers).
For zooming, I guess you could make your own implementation using javascript, you can just resize the image (easy with jQuery).
