jQuery window.load doesn't modify dom elements created with other javascript - javascript

Im using jQuery to modify html that has been created with other javascript. If I make the jQuery run when I click a button everything works fine.
However if I run the jQuery on window load it doesn't do anything. By adding an alert it seems its run before the other javascript has finished created html on the page. How can I make my jQuery run after all other javascript has finished?
Note - im making a demo only, so performance and best practice aren't really an issue in this case. Thanks

You may also delay the execution of your script to make sure other libraries have completed their initialization.
Eg:
$(function(){
setTimeout(function(){
//your code in this block is executed after 500 ms
}, 500);
});

If you place your code after the external code, it will run after the external code is finished, because ready handlers uses a queue.
There is no reason to use setTimeout
$(function(){alert('external');});
//...
//...
//...
$(function(){alert('your code');});

How can I make an element on hover?

All I'm trying to do is something like this mechanism:
Here is what I've tried so far:
$(document).ready(function(){
$('a').bind('mouseenter', function() {
var self = $(this);
this.iid = setInterval(function() {
var tag_name = self.text(),
top = self.position().top + self.outerHeight(true),
left = self.position().left;
self.append("<div class='tag_info'>Some explanations about"+tag_name+"</div>")
$(".tag_info").css({top: top + "px", left: left + "px"}).fadeIn(200);
}, 525);
}).bind('mouseleave', function(){
this.iid && clearInterval(this.iid);
});
});
body{
padding: 20px;
}
a {
color: #3e6d8e !important;
background-color: #E1ECF4;
padding: 2px 5px;
}
.tag_info{
position: reletive;
width: 130px;
height: 30px;
display:none;
background-color: black;
color: white;
}
<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/2.1.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
<a>tag1</a>
<a>tag2</a>
As you see, it will be repeated every time. How can I execute it once per hover? And why the position doesn't apply?
Also is what I'm doing a right algorithm for such thing?
Thank you.
I am not sure why you are using setInterval but I think this should work. I removed setInterval and everytime the mouseenter event occurs we can append <div class='tag_info'> and every time mouseleave event occurs we can remove the the appended div.
$(document).ready(function(){
$('#test').bind('mouseenter', function() {
var self = $(this);
var tag_name = self.text(),
top = self.position().top + self.outerHeight(true),
left = self.position().left;
self.append("<div class='tag_info'>Some explanations about"+tag_name+"</div>")
$(".tag_info").css({top: top + "px", left: left + "px"}).fadeIn(200);
}).bind('mouseleave', function(){
$(this).children('.tag_info').remove();
});
});
body{
padding: 20px;
}
a {
color: #3e6d8e !important;
background-color: #E1ECF4;
padding: 2px 5px;
}
.tag_info{
position: reletive;
width: 130px;
height: 30px;
display:none;
background-color: black;
color: white;
}

What you're doing:
setInterval - (repeats your function every 525ms)
What you want:
setTimeout - (executes your function once after 525ms delay)

Here an example i've created that create an auto slider CodePen Demo and JSFiddle Demo
I've used an object literal pattern to create slide variable just to avoid creating many global function and variable. Inside document.ready i've initialised my slider just by calling slide.init({....}) this way it makes it easy to reuse and work like plugin.
$.extend(slide.config,option)
this code in simple words override you're default configuration defined in config key
as i mentioned in my above comment make a function slider() and place seTimeout(slide,1000) at bottom of your function before closing
Here in this code its done in animate key of slide object it is passed with two parameter cnt and all image array, If cnt is greater then image array length then cnt is set to 0 i.e if at first when cnt keeps on increment i fadeout all image so when i make it 0 the next time the fadeToggle acts as switch
if On then Off
if Off the On
and calling function slider after a delay makes it a recursive call its just one way for continuously looping there are many other ways i guess for looping continuous you can try
well i haven't check if all images Loaded or not which is most important in slider well that you could try on your own.
var slide = {
'config': {
'container': $('#slideX'),
'delay': 3000,
'fade': 'fast',
'easing': 'linear'
},
init: function(option) {
$.extend(slide.config, option);
var imag = slide.getImages();
slide.animate(0, imag);
},
animate: function(cnt, imag) {
if (cnt >= imag.length) {
cnt = 0;
}
imag.eq(cnt).fadeToggle(slide.config.fade, slide.config.easing);
setTimeout(function() {
slide.animate(++cnt, imag);
}, slide.config.delay);
},
getImages: function() {
return slide.config.container.find('img');
}
};
$(document).ready(function() {
slide.init({
'contianer': $('#slideX'),
'delay': 3000,
'fade': 'fast',
'easing': 'swing'
});
})
body {
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
}
.contianer {
width: 100%;
height: 100%;
position: relative;
}
.container > div,
.container > div >img {
width: 100%;
height: 100%;
position: absolute;
z-index: 1;
}
<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/2.1.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
<div class="container" id="slideX">
<div id="img1">

</div>

Make div all content below move down if div slides down

I'm trying to make this notification div that slides down if it is active. It slides down using this script:
<script type="text/javascript">
$(document).ready(function(){
$('#notice').slideDown(1000);
$('.exit').click(function(){
$("#notice").slideUp(400);
});
});
</script>
And the style is:
#notice {
background: #E0E0E0;
color: #FFF;
padding-left: 30px;
padding-top: 20px;
padding-bottom: 20px;
padding-right: 30px;
position: absolute;
z-index: 999999;
width: calc(100% - 60px);
top: 0;
font-weight: 200;
letter-spacing: 1px;
text-align: center;
display: none;
}
But how can I make this move everything else down as it slides down, even though the div below is at state 'position: fixed'. And slide everything else back up when it is removed using the .exit link.
Here you are one option to do it
Example here http://jsfiddle.net/jvarj4gk/2/
$('#notice').slideDown(1000);
var timer = setInterval(function () {
$('#fixed').css({
top: $('#notice').outerHeight()
});
if ($('#notice').outerHeight() == $('#fixed').css('top')) {
clearInterval(timer);
}
}, 10);
$('.exit').click(function () {
$("#notice").slideUp(400, function(){
$(this).remove();
});
$('#fixed').animate({
top: 0
}, 400);
});
Update
To move the #body you can do it like this
Example http://jsfiddle.net/jvarj4gk/5/
$('#notice').slideDown(1000);
var timer = setInterval(function () {
$('#fixed, #body').css({
top: $('#notice').outerHeight()
});
if ($('#notice').outerHeight() == $('#fixed').css('top')) {
clearInterval(timer);
}
}, 10);
$('.exit').click(function () {
$("#notice").slideUp(400, function(){
$(this).remove();
});
$('#fixed').animate({
top: 0
}, 400);
});
You can animate() the div below
var h = '+=' + $('#notice').height();
$('#fixedDivId').animate({
top: h;
},1000);
And almost the same stuff for slide up but h='-='+ $('#notice').height();
UPD
For your code it will look like this
$(document).ready(function(){
var h = $('#notice').height()+'px';
$('#notice').slideDown({duration:1000, queue:false});
$('#fixedDivId').animate({
top: h
},{duration:1000, queue:false});
$('.exit').click(function(){
$("#notice").slideUp(400);
});
});

Event Handlers On Newly Created Elements

I have a web app with a number of textareas and the ability to add more if you wish.
When you shift focus from one textarea to another, the one in focus animates to a larger size, and the rest shrink down.
When the page loads it handles the animation perfectly for the initial four boxes in the html file, but when you click on the button to add more textareas the animation fails to accomodate these new elements... that is, unless you place the initial queries in a function, and call that function from the addelement function tied to the button.
But!, when you do this it queries as many times as you add a new element. So, if you quickly add, say 10, new textareas, the next time you lay focus on any textarea the query runs 10 times.
Is the issue in my design, or jQueries implementation? If the former, how better can I design it, if it is the latter, how can I work around it?
I've tried to chop the code down to the relevant bits... I've tried everything from focus and blur, to keypresses, the latest is on click.

You should use the following:
// New way (jQuery 1.7+) - .on(events, selector, handler)
$(document).on("click", "textarea", function () {
event.preventDefault();
alert('testlink');
});
Since the textarea is added dynamically, you need to use event delegation to register the event handler.
Try
$(document).on('click', 'textarea', function() {
// do something
});
The issue is you are binding the textareas only on the page load. I made a JSFiddle with working code: http://jsfiddle.net/VpABC/
Here's what I changed:
I wrapped:
$('textarea').on("click", function () {
//alert(this.id.substring(0,3));
if (this.id.substring(0, 3) == 'box') {
$('textarea').animate({
height: "51"
}, 1000);
$(this).animate({
height: "409"
}, 1000);
} else {
$('textarea').animate({
height: "51"
}, 1000);
}
});
in a function so it looked like this:
function bindTextAreas() {
$('textarea').unbind("click");
$('textarea').on("click", function () {
//alert(this.id.substring(0,3));
if (this.id.substring(0, 3) == 'box') {
$('textarea').animate({
height: "51"
}, 1000);
$(this).animate({
height: "409"
}, 1000);
} else {
$('textarea').animate({
height: "51"
}, 1000);
}
});
}
bindTextAreas();
What this does is it allows you to call this function, bindTextAreas, whenever you create a new textarea. This will unbind all the current events than rebind them. This will make it so your new textarea is has the click handler setup.
An place where this function is called is in the addele function like this:
function addele() {
var tops = document.getElementById('top');
var num = numb + 1;
var romu = romanise(num);
var newbox = document.createElement('textarea');
var newboxid = 'box' + num;
newbox.setAttribute('id', newboxid);
newbox.setAttribute('class', 'tecksd');
newbox.setAttribute('placeholder', '(' + romu + ')');
tops.appendChild(newbox);
numb = num;
onit();
bindTextAreas();
} //addele(), add element
Notice the bindTextAreas(); line near the bottom. This reloads all the click handlers.

Animating multiple divs by switching their classes

i am having a hard time trying to animate this box, so the changes go smooth, but i just cannot figure out how to keep everything together. Help would be really appreciated. (already tried with 'switchClass') Here is the whole code:
<script src="jquery.js"></script>
<script src="http://code.jquery.com/ui/1.10.0/jquery-ui.js"></script>
<style>
#box {
position: relative;
margin: auto;
padding: auto;
display: block;
width: 167px;
height: 167px;
}
#box .item {
position: relative;
margin: 0;
display: block;
width: 100%;
height: 33%;
cursor: pointer;
}
#box .over {
height: 84%;
}
#box .other {
height: 8%;
}
#top {
background: red;
}
#mid {
background: green;
}
#bot {
background: blue;
}
</style>
<script>
function anim(item) {
$('.item').attr('class', 'item other');
$('#' + item.id).attr('class', 'item over');
}
function clean() {
$('.item').attr('class', 'item');
}
</script>
<div id='box' onmouseout="clean()">
<div id='top' class='item' onmouseover='anim(this)'></div>
<div id='mid' class='item' onmouseover='anim(this)'></div>
<div id='bot' class='item' onmouseover='anim(this)'></div>
</div>
edit: this code is running just fine, but its just an example of final output (just some animations needed)
Maybe this is not super cool, but seems to do job:
var $items = $('.item').on({
mouseover: function () {
$items.removeClass('over other');
$items.stop().filter(this).animate({height: '84%'}, function () {
$(this).addClass('over');
})
.end().not(this).animate({height: '8%'}, function () {
$(this).addClass('other');
});
},
reset: function() {
$items.removeClass('over other').stop().animate({height: '33%'});
}
});
$('#box').mouseout(function() {
$items.trigger('reset');
});
http://jsfiddle.net/dfsq/4vnkh/1/
If you want to animate the change, please take a look at jQuery animate
Something like this:
$('.item').mouseenter(function() {
$('.item').animate({
height: 80%
}, 500, function() {
// Animation complete.
});
});
$('.item').mouseleave(function() {
$('.item').animate({
height: 33%
}, 500, function() {
// Animation complete.
});
});
in this case you don't need onmouseout or onmouseover
If your animation is based solely on CSS class attributes why not use CSS3 hover pseudo-selector?
Example:
.box {
width: 200px;
}
.box:hover {
width: 400px;
}
<div class="box">Hover over me!</div>
Additional: Response to comments
If you are looking for custom animation duration you can use a callback function with a duration for the initial function call. Here's an example:
$('#div').animate({
width: '200px',
color: 'blue'
}, 5000, function() {
// Animation finished after 5 seconds.
alert("Animation complete!");
});
Addition #2
Your problem child is this little guy:
$('.item').attr('class', 'item other');
This sets each box to 8% height and THEN expands the primary animating box. Remove this and your #box will remain the same height throughout all animations!
