Firefox reload page loop debugging hints? - javascript

One of my javascript heavy pages reloads itself endlessly when using a deep link in firefox. (I'm using jquery address plugin btw.)
The page works fine in Chrome and IE, but not in FF. I have tried debugging it using firebug, but the problem is that when the page reloads firebug is reset.
Any hints on how I could debug this besides stepping the code and adding log statements?

You could set Firebug to persist the console so you can see errors on reload.

Redirection to external links fails on Safari

I am facing this strange issue only on safari.
In my webapp app, I redirect to some links using window.location.href
For all these links a connection lost error is returned from the browser on safari, working fine with chrome and firefox.
And when I retry the link a few times, it also starts to work on Safari.
So for example there is a button A, which onClick has window.location.href to "https://example.net", now when I click any links of this type, on first attempts it fails on safari, never ever occurred on Chrome or Firefox. Also if the whole page is still loading and I click, it works.
And everthing works in local enviroment, but doesn't work on stage and production.
Please help me out on this one, I have tried a lot of combinations like using anchor links tags instead of button, but button was used for a reason. Anyways If anyone has similar issues and know something about, please help me.

strange script error with firefox alone

If you open this site in chrome, it loads and runs ok but I tried loading it in firefox 19.0.2 and I keep getting a Script error asking me if I want to continue or stop. After doing some searching around I found the about:config setting, but that doesn't help. I installed firebug and I see an error about "Permission denied to access property 'toString'" but I have no clue as to what it wants or needs. And the weird part is that if you go to another page in the same site like this one it works just fine. I'm clueless as to what it can be, so any help is much appreciated.
Not a duplicate of this, since it happens on one page but not the other and they both run the same exact code. just that one loads a bit more data than the other. More than anything I'm wondering if its the amount of facebook likes on one page?
When you try to hit play button, you will get a JavaScript error in console in both Chrome and Firefox "TypeError: player is undefined". I tried it and the same error appeared in both console logs. It is and error in the page itself.
I opened it in my firefox browser and it works fine. So it may be there is an add-on which did this error. Try to disable your installed add-ons from (firefox --> add-ons) and reload the page again. If it loads fine then you can enable your add-ons one by one to check which one causes this problem.

Get rid of [dynamic] JavaScript views in Visual Studio

Since I installed Visual Studio 2010 from scratch about 2 months ago, it behaves slightly different when debugging JavaScript code being run in IE.
When I set a breakpoint, it opens a duplicate of the view with the term "[dynamic]" in the header and marks the breakpoint in there.
When a JavaScript error happens during execution, it does the same before it marks the line of code that threw the error.
This "dynamic" view is editable but edits have no effect - they are not saved to the file.
I find this behavior pretty uncomfortable. Everytime I notice an error in the code during debugging, I happen to fix it in the dynamic view. I hit save. VS does not complain. Next I refresh the page in IE, and - bang - the changes are lost, it loads the untouched old version again.
I haven't been able to find out how I can turn these views off. Before I re-installed Visual Studio it did not do that. It would only create "dynamic" views for script found in inline script tags in HTML files.
Try this
IE > Internet Options > Settings (under browsing history) > Check for new version of stored pages : Every time I visit the webpage.
This works for me in IE10.
Other option is to open Developer tools and select cache option Always Refresh from Server as show in the image below
Try hitting CTRL+F5 on the web page. That did the trick for me.
The problem was that I had opened other IE windows from a previous debugging session, so the dynamic javascript files were still cached.
Having developer tools open - F12 - should also cause the cache files for the page to be cleared on each refresh.
Changing the encoding of the JS file in question, from a Windows codepage to UTF-8, fixes this for me.
Narrowing it down, it appears that OEM Extended ASCII characters in the file (e.g. ALT-254 which I use for a bullet) trigger the problem with the Windows codepage files.
(Visual Studio 2013 Update 5, IE11)
For Google Chrome:
Open developer tools(F12)
Open Network Conditions Tool
Select Disable Cache
I had the same problem of not being able to hit a break point in new code. And breakpoints on old code in the same page will bring up the [dynamic] version. The edited page is not reloaded. This just started for me a week ago in both VS2012 and VS2013. Using refresh page and/or Ctl-F5 did not work for me. BUT, reading this thread pointed me to using F12 to open Developer tools. Leaving that window open, while hitting refresh does the trick. Thanks guys.
1) Run the page Without Debugging (Debug-->Start Without Debugging)
2) While the web page is open in Internet Explorer, press Ctrl-F5 so
that the IE cache is cleared. Ensure IE has the focus.
3) Close IE and re-run the page with Debugging (Debug-->Start
Debugging).
This fixed the issue for me.

Window.location intermittently fails to load in IE

I have an aspx page with JS calling window.location.reload(true) to force refresh a page when a function is called.
This appears to work a few times, with the page reloading as expected, but gets to a scenario where the function is called (i.e. alert in the function is visible) but the reload does not occur. I've also tried setting window.location with the same outcome - it works 2 or 3 times then fails.
This does not occur in Firefox (16), but is happening in different versions of IE (7 & 9)
Using Fiddler to monitor the browser traffic, all is as expected when the reload is working, but there is no traffic reported when the reload stops, suggesting the browser is not sending the request to the server? The IE window does go blank with the loading spinner spinning, but eventually IE displays the error page:
Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage
Most likely causes:
You are not connected to the Internet.
The website is encountering problems.
There might be a typing error in the address.
This appears to lock the browser. Trying to hit another website results in the same output in Fiddler (nothing). Opening a new IE window means I am able to hit the site with no problems.
This was initially causing a problem updating UpdatePanels via __doPostBack so this JS reload of the page was seen as a quick workaround, but this does not seem to be the case.
I would tend to think this is server related, but I have been unable to replicate the issue in Firefox. This does however unfortunately have to work in IE.
Any ideas much appreciated!
JS snippet below (though this is pretty simple stuff)
function ReloadWindow() {
alert(window.location); // Can see this alert, even when page fails to reload
window.location.reload(true);
}

Console.log messages not showing up in Chrome's javascript console?

I am logging using the jQuery.log plugin (which logs to console.log if available) and I am not seeing any of the logging messages appear in the Chrome JavaScript console.
Logging works on Firebug's console under Firefox, but I did have to explicitly enable the Firebug JavaScript console. Have a missed some option somewhere under Chrome?
Edit:
The only thing being logged to the console is
Uncaught Syntax error, unrecognized expression: |button
I assume that the Chrome console is suppose to log statements even after errors like the one above, but there may be some kind of issue with Chrome here, see http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=29062. I am using Chrome 5.0.375 under Linux and that bug is listed as a Windows XP, Chrome 4.0 issue, it could still apply.
I've just had the same problem and found this question when trying to find an answer.
What fixed this for me was disabling firebug lite in chrome.
It was swallowing all console messages.
Make sure you have the console showing and that it is showing "All".
The cursor is on the button to hide/show the console.
Update: In newer versions of Chrome, you need to click the filter icon, then make sure "All" is selected.
When playing around with example Chrome Extensions, I was often unable to see the console.log messages when looking at console (ctrl+shift+j). But then I realized, that I was in the wrong place.
Wrench -> Tools -> Extensions and then click on the appropriate link under "Inspect active views". (in the Chrome examples it is often background.html) This should bring up the console that you are looking for.
On my computer I had accidently clicked the Debug filter. This made my log messages hidden. Here's how it was before (hidden messages):
Here's how it was after the change (working messages):
I am not sure if this is the case, but if you are using firebug with chrome, you have to turn firebug off in order for console.log() to work in Developer Tools.
I just found out logging was disabled from my filters.
For me, it was because the script was being cached and the browser was not loading my latest version.
Try Ctrl+F5 to reload your page.
Resetting default setting works for me.
While in the console tab, pressingF1 should open the setting page. There you will different settings that you can adjust including the button Restore defaults and reload.
I have this error by have obfuscated javascript code, deobfuscate and console.log work again)
