I was unable to find or create a regex which match only letters,spaces, accented letters and spanish and german letters.
I'm using this for now:
var reg = new RegExp("^[a-z _]*$");
I've tried:
^[:alpha: _]*$
^[a-zA-Z0-9äöüÄÖÜ]*$
^[-\p{L}]*$
Any idea? Or the regex supported by javascript engines are limited?
The 2nd to last case looks like it should work, but is missing a " " and
/^[a-zA-Z0-9äöüÄÖÜ]*$/.test("aäöüÄÖÜz") => true in FF 3.6 and IE8
/^[a-zA-Z0-9äöüÄÖÜ]*$/.test("é") => false in FF 3.6 and IE8
I'm am unable to find the other constructs in the ECMAScript specification.
Happy coding.
Edit Also check the page encoding and make sure it is "unicode" (UTF-8 likely). If this can't be ensured, then use the \uXXXX escape sequences in the regular expression (using the escapes can be done anyway and may help with source code editing/control).
I'm parsing a name input field, and this seems to be working for both German and French:
^[a-zA-Z\-ÀàÂâÆæÇçÈèÉéÊêËëÎîÏïÔôŒœÙùÛûÜü]*$
Some folks have names like 'Rölf-Dieter', and this lets them through, while checking for numbers. A little extreme, but it works!

I have the following .NET regular expression, that validates my data on the back-end:
[_#\p{Ll}\p{Lu}0-9]{1}[/()0-9\p{Ll}\p{Lu}_\.\s-\?]*
I have to make the same validation in JavaScript, so i translated it like this:
^[#Ѐ-ӿ\w][/\(\).Ѐ-ӿ\s\w]*
It is weird that it works just fine in the online tester, but it does not in the console or in my code:
function ValidateColumnName(strColName){
var regex = /^[#Ѐ-ӿ\w][/\(\).Ѐ-ӿ\s\w]*/gu;
return regex.test(strColName);
}
ValidateColumnName("中");
Here is a link to my regex online
The meaning of the regex should be:
It can start with one of this symbols: _,#,letter (unicode allowed), number
It can continue with one or more of this: /,(,),numer, letter (unicode allowed),-,.,spaces
Example strings:
Pass:
тест
12тест
_тест
_te st
тест()
те\ст/
...
Not pass:
()тест
$test
!тест
-тест
...
Am i missing something that is in the online tester (by default), but not in my code?
Your code is almost correct to to test for English \w and cyrillic Ѐ-ӿ letters. Just remove the double dashes:
/^[#Ѐ-ӿ\w][/\(\).Ѐ-ӿ\s\w]*/gu
To test also Basic Chinese, include this range ӿ一 :
/^[#Ѐ-ӿ一-鿿\w][/\(\).Ѐ-ӿ一-鿿\s\w]*/gu
If you need to include all letters from all alphabets .. it gets ugly.
Here is reference list:
unicode blocks
NOTE: for older and special Chinese characters, better do your own research.
Here is a LONG regex for all alphabets:

You should not use \\ for the Unicode escapes:
/^[#Ѐ-ӿ\w][/\(\).Ѐ-ӿ\s\w]*/
should work (and in fact your tests pass/fail as described with that version).
I'm trying to detect if a string contains Russian (cyrillic) characters or not. I'm using this code:
term.match(/[\wа-я]+/ig);
but it doesn't work – or in fact it just returns the string back as it is.
Can somebody help with the right code?
Thanks!
Use pattern /[Ѐ-ӿ]/ to cover more cyrillic characters:
// http://jrgraphix.net/r/Unicode/0400-04FF
const cyrillicPattern = /^[Ѐ-ӿ]+$/;
console.log('Привіт:', cyrillicPattern.test('Привіт'));
console.log('Hello:', cyrillicPattern.test('Hello'));
UPDATE:
In some new browsers, you can use Unicode property escapes.
The Cyrillic script uses the same range as described above: U+0400..U+04FF
const cyrillicPattern = /^\p{Script=Cyrillic}+$/u;
console.log('Привіт:', cyrillicPattern.test('Привіт'));
console.log('Hello:', cyrillicPattern.test('Hello'));
Perhaps you meant to use the RegExp test method instead?
/[а-яА-ЯЁё]/.test(term)
Note that JavaScript regexes are not really Unicode-aware, which means the i flag will have no effect on anything that's not ASCII. Hence the need for spelling out lower- and upper-case ranges separately.
I want to remove signs like:
!##$%^&*()_+`-=[]\|{};':",./<>?。,‘“”’;【】『』
and many more.
But ensuring all the foreign characters are kept, such as Chinese, French, Greece, etc.
In Ruby, I'm able to do it with regex
/[^\p{Alnum}]/
It doesn't work in JS. Thanks in advance.
Answer
Thank Jordan Gray. The 8400-letter regex is awesome. It is a short solution as it is only 8.4kb compare to 63kb of XRegExp.

This is funny, isn't it?
Someone has already suggested XRegExp. That's a great package, but if all you want is a way of matching letters you can grab it straight from the source.
In this case, what you're looking for is a way to match the whole Unicode Letter category, which is defined in the source for the XRegExp Unicode Base package. With XRegExp, you could match these with \p{L} or \p{Letter}. A JS-compatible expression for matching characters not in this category would work out to (brace yourself):

Pretty hefty, but what you'd expect if you aim to match uppercase, lowercase, title case, modifier and other letters in every language in the basic multilingual plane¹, including all ligatures and accented characters. Don't forget to add 0-9 to the beginning if you want to match numbers as well!
If you trust your Unicode not to get mangled, you could use this shorter version:
This gives a little idea of the sheer diversity of this category. Personally, I would use the first expression since it is far less likely to be invisibly mucked up in a way that you will probably never find out about.
¹ This doesn't include characters from the so-called astral planes such as emoji, ancient/historic scripts like Egyptian hieroglyphs and the many many CJK ideographs. It's your call if you think these should count as "letters" in some very extended sense and thus want to include them.
As #Barney suggested, I would go with XRegExp (v2.0.0 is about 63kb minimized). Here is an example, which I believe does what you are asking for? Using require.js to load the library.
HTML

Javascript
require.config({
paths: {
'XRegExp': 'https://raw.github.com/slevithan/xregexp/v2.0.0/min/xregexp-all-min'
}
})
require(['XRegExp'], function() {
var display = document.getElementById('display'),
alnum = XRegExp('[^\\p{L}\\p{Nd}]', 'g');
document.getElementById('entry').addEventListener('keyup', function(evt) {
display.textContent = XRegExp.replace(evt.target.value, alnum, '');
}, false);
});
On jsFiddle
I've come across an error in my web app that I'm not sure how to fix.
Text boxes are sending me the long dash as part of their content (you know, the special long dash that MS Word automatically inserts sometimes). However, I can't find a way to replace it; since if I try to copy that character and put it into a JavaScript str.replace statement, it doesn't render right and it breaks the script.
How can I fix this?
The specific character that's killing it is —.
Also, if it helps, I'm passing the value as a GET parameter, and then encoding it in XML and sending it to a server.
This code might help:
text = text.replace(/–|—/g, "-");
It replaces all – (–) and — (—) symbols with simple dashes (-).
DEMO: http://jsfiddle.net/F953H/
That character is call an Em Dash. You can replace it like so:
str.replace('—', '');
Here is an example Fiddle: http://jsfiddle.net/x67Ph/
The — is called a unicode escape sequence. These allow to to specify a unicode character by its code. 2014 happens to be the Em Dash.
There are three unicode long-ish dashes you need to worry about: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dash
You can replace unicode characters directly by using the unicode escape:
'—my string'.replace( /[‒–—―]/g, '' )
There may be more characters behaving like this, and you may want to reuse them in html later. A more generic way to to deal with it could be to replace all 'extended characters' with their html encoded equivalent. You could do that Like this:
[yourstring].replace(/[€-썐]/g,
function(a) {
return '&#'+a.charCodeAt(0)+';';
}
);
With the ECMAScript 2018 standard, JavaScript RegExp now supports Unicode property (or, category) classes. One of them, \p{Dash}, matches any Unicode character points that are dashes:
/\p{Dash}/gu
In ES5, the equivalent expression is:
/[-֊־᐀᠆‐-―⁓⁻₋−⸗⸚⸺⸻⹀⹝〜〰゠︱︲﹘﹣－]|𐺭/g
See the Unicode Utilities reference.
Here are some JavaScript examples:
const text = "Dashes: －﹣֊᐀᠆‐-–︲—﹘︱―⸺⸻⁓⸗⹀⹝〜゠⸚־−⁻₋〰𐺭";
const es5_dash_regex = /[-֊־᐀᠆‐-―⁓⁻₋−⸗⸚⸺⸻⹀⹝〜〰゠︱︲﹘﹣－]|𐺭/g;
console.log(text.replace(es5_dash_regex, '-')); // Normalize each dash to ASCII hyphen
// => Dashes: ----------------------------
To match one or more dashes and replace with a single char (or remove in one go):
/\p{Dash}+/gu
/(?:[-֊־᐀᠆‐-―⁓⁻₋−⸗⸚⸺⸻⹀⹝〜〰゠︱︲﹘﹣－]|𐺭)+/g
I can't get this javascript function to work the way I want...
// matches a String that contains kanji and/or kana character(s)
String.prototype.isKanjiKana = function(){
return !!this.match(/^[一-龯|぀-ゖ|ァ-ヺ|ｦ-ﾝ|ㇰ-ㇿ]+$/);
}
it does return TRUE if the string is made of kanji and/or kana characters, FALSE if alphabet or other chars are present.
I would like it to return if at least 1 kanji and/or kana characters are present instead that if all of them are.
thank you in advance for any help!
The right answer is not to hardcode ranges. Never ever put magic numbers in your code! That is a maintenance nightmare. It is hard to read, hard to write, hard to debug, hard to maintain. How do you know you got the numbers right? What happens when they add new ones? No, do not use magic numbers. Please.
The right answer is to use named Unicode scripts, which are a fundemental aspect of every Unicode code point:
[\p{Han}\p{Hiragana}\p{Katakana}]
That requires the XRegExp plugin for Javascript.
The real problem is that Javascript regexes on their own are too primitive to support Unicode properties — and therefore, to support Unicode. Maybe that was once an acceptable compromise 15 years ago, but today it is nothing less than intolerably negligent, as you yourself have discovered.
You will also miss a few Common code points specified as kana in the new Script Extensions property, but probably no matter. You could just add \p{Common} to the set above.
Now that Unicode property escapes are part of the ES (2018) spec, the following regex can be used natively if the JS engine supports this feature (expanding on #tchrist's answer):
/[\p{Script_Extensions=Han}\p{Script_Extensions=Hiragana}\p{Script_Extensions=Katakana}]/u
If you want to exclude punctuation from being matched:
/(?!\p{Punctuation})[\p{Script_Extensions=Han}\p{Script_Extensions=Hiragana}\p{Script_Extensions=Katakana}]/u
/[　-〿]|[぀-ゟ]|[゠-ヿ]|[＀-￯]|[一-龯]|[㐀-䶿]/
Japanese style punctuation: [　-〿]
Hiragana: [぀-ゟ]
Katakana: [゠-ヿ]
Roman characters + half-width katakana: [＀-￯]
Kanji: [一-龯]|[㐀-䶿]
String.prototype.isKanjiKana = function(){
return !!this.match(/[一-龯぀-ゖァ-ヺｦ-ﾝㇰ-ㇿ]/);
}
Don't anchor it to beginning and end of string with $^ and the + is useless in this case.
/[一-龯|぀-ゖ|ァ-ヺ|ｦ-ﾝ|ㇰ-ㇿ]/
Why not just this? It will return true when it contains at least one Kanji.
/[一-龯]/.test(str)
