I have a few questions that need answering. I am trying to create a Google Chrome extension and I need every page to be monitored for a keyboard action. I have added a content script that runs on the page load and when you click the keyboard shortcut an alert is shown.
What I want to do is instead of an alert have something like fancybox, thickbox, etc... however all of those are jquery plugins which adds a dependency to my js file. I tried launching the plugin before my js file but it still does not work.
I run the content script from the manifest.json file with

I cannot execute an HTML page where the js is located I have to use a js file.
so what I want to know is if either there is a way to include the plugin without physically adding it to my file or if there is a way to call the js file which then just executes an HTML file or if there is another way of creating a popup screen like fancybox that is already included in js.
Another question I have is if there was a way to embed HTML into an alert box (this is a backup if I cannot figure out the above question)
and finally does anyone know of an execution command for x-webkit-speech? I want the command to start recording and somehow some people have used some commands (none of which answer my question) so someone somewhere knows a little more about this function then me. I would really appreciate help with this I am really close to finishing my program and these are my last holdups with these questions answered I will be able to release my extension. Please help where you can I have researched and researched everywhere all different ways of trying these things and none have worked.

You were correct (JHurrah) including the jquery actually solved the problem I really appreciate that. simple yet successful I just assumed the jquery provided was enough but I guess everyone knows what happens when you assume especially when programming.

since simplemodal is a plugin it depends on jquery, try including jquery in your manifest before the other scripts.

I"m a little confused by your question, but I'll give it my best shot.
1) I think you're trying to ask: Can I use a content_script to inject HTML. The answer is yes, but only through Javascript. So, you could have something like:

$("body").append("Hi, I'm on the bottom of the page");
Your javascript would have to create or load the HTML that would get inserted into the page.
2) No, no HTML in an alert box. You're on the right track with using lightbox, thickbox, etc.

I have a short snippet of jquery code that I use to pick and submit a specific choice in a drop-down menu on a website.
For now, I've pasted the code into the console, but I would like to set up some form of simple local module with a button, that when clicked runs the jquery code on the specific website.
I don't know much coding aside from a bit VBA, so I'm unsure what's the best way to go about this. Intuitively, I imagine that it shouldn't be that difficult of a task, but I can't quite wrap my head around how I set it up and if it's even possible to click a button in a local module that then performs an action on a webpage.
Really hoping some of you might be able to give me some guidance. Any help is appreciated!

It seems that the ServerLink and following scripts are embedded in a dll. If thats the case you can't easily edit them if you dont have access to the source files.
There are some decompilers out there, but i dont think thats what you want to do.
Let's say I'm building a website and using an already made Wordpress theme. Say it's a pretty complex theme and there's a lot of folders and files. If I wanted to change something specific, like text, or an image, or something that happens in Javascript/jQuery, and the change that I want is not an option in the themes control panel, what do I do? I know I have to go into the files but how do I know which file to go to? Lately, I've just download the theme to my desktop and use the windows search companion and type in the field that says "a word or phrase in the file." Sometimes it comes up and sometimes it doesn't. For CSS changes I usually use Firebug and click on the element, but many times I want to change the HTML/PHP/Javascript. I feel like I'm doing it the wrong way and there's an easier way that I'm missing.
As you mentioned WordPress theme so I will specifically try to answer this question for editing WordPress theme.
When it comes to WordPress, everything is very structured and well organized. If theme written following standard practices then each component has its specific file. If you are familiar with WordPress theme structure and want to change php code or say a static part then all you need to do is locate the component file say sidebar.php, home.php, single-{type}.php, header.php and many similar files. http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Hierarchy
Now if you want to edit something that is shown in right/left side of page as sidebar then chances of finding it in sidebar.php are maximum. Similarly to change something on home page try looking for home.php, for posts it could be single-post.php.
Many a times what you are looking to change might need a tweak in widgets. In this case, process remains same as theme you just need to look in different folder.
Javascript: For editing javascript, beautify the code if it came minified. When you have code ready much of js debugging can be done using firebug/Developer Console in chrome. Best way is to put breakpoints at relevant position and then inspect code behavior. You will be able to locate code block that you need to tweak to achieve what you want.
CSS: Create a child theme and then use it override default theme properties.
You can probably use grep in PowerShell, Cygwin, etc.

I want to give my clients a few bits of copy/paste code so that a Lightbox shows on their site with an iframe showing a URL that I specify. This would be something similar to a support widget that comes up when you click on a button (ZenDesk, UserVoice, etc.).
I've been trying to write this on my own, but after attempting to include jQuery on page load plus the Lightbox CSS file, it's proven to be a little bit of a mess.
Could someone point me in the right direction as to how I can create an optimal bit of JS that can accomplish this? Perhaps a framework already exists so that I don't need to reinvent the wheel?

Here's a quick solution.
If you know some basic jQuery you won't have problems with understanding the code but feel free to ask if you need any help.
Keep in mind that the code won't trigger a pop-up, it's just to get the embed code. I'd suggest using some plugin for this, fancybox is a good one.
