Really cool JS tools: does anybody know what this is? - javascript

Very cool JS components: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/40664031/ns/us_news-crime_and_courts/
Check out the icons next to the vertical scrollbar in your browser, and the expanding 'sharing' toolbar at the bottom.
Does anybody know if these are publicly available components? Has anybody seen these before?
Edit: I'm talking about:
The way the sections in the bottom bar expand into tabs to show more controls. Try clicking on "Login and settings", for example.
The way the links near the scrollbar take you to the respective sections. Very cool tool to aid user discovery in a long page.

I was intrigued by the scroll markers used for jumping around the page so I made a start at replicating the functionality in a plugin:
https://github.com/sj26/jquery.scrollmarkers
It's definitely not pretty yet, but it's a start.

Its a private library built by Krux Digital, Inc.
I dug into the source of http://cdn.krxd.net/krux.js
Its ajax tabs..
Also, you can have a bar fixed at bottom of page simply by using
position:fixed
property in css, then in the div at bottom, impliment jQuery.tabs, and for each tab load data via ajax. Wont be that difficult. and if MSN has implemented it, they would have surely spent a lot of time on it

HTML5 auto scroll to next section

As you can see right here: https://www.sequoiacap.com/
I'm trying to mimic its scrolling behavior right here, and its implementation really baffles me. Is it scrolling to another section? Or is it scrolling the background? Is there a name for this specific website style?
I have a one page parallax theme that I would like to auto scroll for user, so that each scroll gives the user a new fullscreen section. I would like to know how many plugins I would need to use. Some basic examples or directions for research would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
Here's 2 possible ways out of many, for how you could implement this:
jump.js which is a dependency-free library (meaning it does not require jQuery or similar)
fullPage which is a full page slider plugin for jQuery. This might be more of what you want, because it does not introduce a scrollbar.

Inserting a Nav Bar with Rollover effects

For those of you who have heard this question already.
If you were to go ahead and try to make a Navigation Bar what would be your first step. Would you use the Photoshop "Rollover" method? Or would you hand code it (so to speak).
Right now I have a Navigation Bar ready to export into Dreameaver cs5. I cannot seem to have the "hover" effect to, well, hover. I proceed to publish my entire site. My navigation bar is at the top of my web page but I still cannot seem to have any sort of link animation happening. When I go ahead and open a new html document and just throw it into the header it works fine with a blank html document. Why is it that my specific index.html document does not want to "have" my navigation bar or have it work correctly.
I know I'm going to be terribly scorned for my lack of knowledge even asking this question.
Please any help would be appreciated. It seems I cannot post any images yet..I would if I could.

How to recreate Chromium/Chrome new tab home page

I'm trying to find out how to recreate Chrome's new tab homepage with all it's features.
I've tried plugins like isotope, however I've met a lot problems with sorting using the jQuery sortable class.
I've tried just using good`ol css with floats to create a grid, but it's nowhere close to as good as what Chrome has.
Is there a tutorial out there that covers this?
Any pointers in the right direction would be helpful
If your using chrome it'll be easier to use the inspect element function of the right click context menu. This brings up the developer console showing the elements tab. It should also take you to the meat of the layout straight away, without having to scroll through lots of lines! :)
If you haven't seen the developer tools in chrome before, it's well worth getting into! The elements panel will be of particular use:
https://developers.google.com/chrome-developer-tools/docs/elements
In short, the elements panel will give you a live view of the HTML DOM, including a view of the CSS classes that are present on any given element.
Update
From a quick look at the source myself though, it looks like a lot of it is generated in JavaScript first, i.e. the margins and widths of icons etc are set using JavaScript when you manually resize the page. I pretty sure their layout isn't just pure CSS.

Need to prevent user from manually scrolling a web page. (Only navigate using internal links)

I am currently designing a webpage that is extremely vertical, my idea was that users would not scroll around the page, but only when they clicked on links with internal anchors (href="#someDiv"), the page would automatically scroll down to that section.
So that the elements of the page are organized into bundles, and the user clicks to go up or down to one section of the single page or another.
I've uploaded the page to the following url:
DWS - Prototype
The page is fairly straightforward, and I am using a smooth-scroll jQuery plugin for the automatic scrolling. All I want is for the user to not be able to wander about on his/her own.
I have tried using overflow:hidden, and looked for javascript or jQuery to get this done, but can't seem to find a viable solution. Overflow hidden prevents the page from loading past the screen, so you can't link to the other elements of the page.
I haven't really tested the HTML/CSS beyond Mac OS, but it works fine on Safari, Firefox and Chrome.
You can disable the scroll bar on a page using the following css property
body{overflow: hidden;}
This will disable both the scroll bar and the mousewheel (im not sure about Pg Up and Down Buttons)
While you definitely have an interesting concept I think it will be very hard to pull off the way you're wanting. What happens if I have the height of my browser window set so small that I can't see your Navigation menus and I also can't scroll? Chances are I'm just gonna get fed up with your site and leave.
When users see a vertical scrollbar they expect to be able to scroll up and down. Taking that way from users is more likely to frustrate and anger them as opposed to them thinking 'This is really cool'.
That being said you could load up jQuery and do something like this:
$(document).ready(function() {
$('html, body').scroll(function(e) {
e.preventDefault();
});
});
This should prevent the scrollbar from going up or down. disclaimer: I have not tested this.
I suggest you make the sections (partially) collapsible. E.g. like here.

Graphic Scrollbar modification on Auto DIV Scroller script

We're using this autoscroller script: http://scripterlative.com/files/autodivscroll.htm (the bottom version).
However, we got really stuck since we don't know how to replace the moving "scrollbar" on the scroller side with a pure and simple line with up arrow on top and bottom arrow on bottom.
Functions wise we want this sidebar to behave exactly like the original sidebar and of course be cross browser compatible. We just want to get rid of the original scrollbar and replace it with a much cleaner and more stylish style.
Is this doable?! How?
Best regards Stefan
Just found jScrollPane on AjaxRain.
Implementing an autoscroll would take some coding, but should definitely be possible by just sending the click messages to the div manually so that it would do the scrolling. If it looks like this will suit your needs, I'd chip in with some additional implementation code. That topic may actually be better suited for another question, if you decide on jScrollPane.
Edit: updated link above. also, there are demos there for scrolling on hover and clicking on a link to jump to an anchor. Custom code for an autoscroll should be relatively simple to write from there.
