I want to call user defined function, once <textarea> attribute values changes.
Attributes like height, width and val() of <textarea> i.e. on content change.
Your suggestion are welcome!!!

What you likely want is the change and keyup and paste events, like this:
$("textarea").bind("change keyup paste", function() {
//this executes when the value changes
});
Textareas support a change event which fires when the focus leaves the element after the content has changed as well as keyup/down/press events.
You can't reliably detect a change that is triggered by JavaScript, so call whatever functions you would call on change in whatever function makes the change.

This changes on keyup, if you wish to perform a function when the textarea loses focus, change 'keyup' to 'change.'

I added the following code, and I am getting the text to update, but only when clicking outside of the textarea.
$('.form__input-el').change(function() {
$('.form__character-indicator').text($('.form__input-el').val().length);
})
Why is this happening and how can I make it update without clicking outside of the textarea?
you you can use keyup if you want to get change the output immediately
$('.form__input-el').keyup(function() {
$('.form__character-indicator').text($('.form__input-el').val().length);
})
<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/2.1.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
<textarea class="form__input-el"></textarea>
<div class="form__character-indicator"></div>
Try with input instead of change this will trigger everytime the user inputs something.
according to jQuery docs: For select boxes, checkboxes, and radio buttons, the event is fired immediately when the user makes a selection with the mouse, but for the other element types the event is deferred until the element loses focus
This is why your event appears only on leaving the textareas focus.
https://api.jquery.com/change/
a complete list of the events can be found here:
https://api.jquery.com/category/events/
so you need to use another event, maybe like:
https://api.jquery.com/keydown/
Use a keyup event to update your character count while the user is typing
Try something like this
$('.textarea').on('keyup', function() {
var newCount = $(this).val().length
$('.count').html(newCount)
})

In my focus manager I need to store some info on the last focus and blur. I need to delegate this hook to body, but if I use * as a filter I will receive the focus event for every parent item of the actual thing getting focus.
Realistically, I could make a filter to accept something like a, input, button ... etc, but also I need to refine it to a:not([tabindex]=-1), *[tabindex!=-1] etc.
But this gets complicated when one considers disabled controls. Is there a jQuery selector for :focusable, or how do I work around this? I could debounce my function, but even that is iffy.
EDIT:
Alright, my bad, I think what I am looking for here is :tabbable.
you can check focus by using: $("yourselector").is( ":focus" )
If you want to stop bubbling up to the dom just return false in your function after doing your stuff.enter code here
I want to know if it's possible to select a textarea's content when it gets modified. In jQuery, I'd do the following:
$("texarea").on("change", function (e) {
$(this).select(); // the content gets selected for copy/cut operations
});
I know it's a bad practice to directly manipulate DOM elements from within an angular controller, so if you know how I can do this cleanly, I'd be happy to learn how!
I think you can do the following, attach an event handler to your textfield element using onblur and onfocus attributes. Write two functions for each as follows:
onfocus get the initial content of the textfield
onblur get the final content and compare to the initial content if there is a difference the run the select function
If you want it to be in real time your could also use onkeyup and onkeydown
I have an input field with id myinput , and have change event bind to this field through,
$("input#myinput").change(function(){
alert("the value is changed");
}
But the handler is not getting called, if I change the value through javascript
$("input#myinput").val(text);
But, it works if I enter the input through keyboard.
so, it seems like I am binding to wrong event. What should I do to bind to both keyboard input and JS value update (jQuery val() here).
thanks.
change is triggered only by user events. With jQuery you can use trigger('change') to trigger the change event programatically.
JS Fiddle demo.
I am working on a plugin for jQuery that will essentially style certain elements. Like jqTransform I could just replace the element but I chose to position the real element off screen and make a new element thats styled. This allows triggering the actual events of the real element. Also, if an onclick handler or onchange handler for a textbox is there, jqTransform will not include that whereas this way, it will include it.
Here is my problem. Say a user has a button. Later on in the app the user decides to change the value of the button. It will change the original button's value but not the styled button. Is there any way I can connect the elements so that if the original button's value is changed the styled button's value is changed as well?
you can catch any property change on object using onpropertychanged event.
$("#buttonid").bind('propertychange', function(e) {
if (e.originalEvent.propertyName == "value") {
// value is changed, handle it here
}
});
