I have a bunch of object attributes coming in as dot-delimited strings like "availability_meta.supplier.price", and I need to assign a corresponding value to record['availability_meta']['supplier']['price'] and so on.
Not everything is 3 levels deep: many are only 1 level deep and many are deeper than 3 levels.
Is there a good way to assign this programmatically in Javascript? For example, I need:
["foo.bar.baz", 1] // --> record.foo.bar.baz = 1
["qux.qaz", "abc"] // --> record.qux.qaz = "abc"
["foshizzle", 200] // --> record.foshizzle = 200
I imagine I could hack something together, but I don't have any good algorithm in mind so would appreciate suggestions. I'm using lodash if that's helpful, and open to other libraries that may make quick work of this.
EDIT this is on the backend and run infrequently, so not necessary to optimize for size, speed, etc. In fact code readability would be a plus here for future devs.
EDIT 2 This is NOT the same as the referenced duplicate. Namely, I need to be able to do this assignment multiple times for the same object, and the "duplicate" answer will simply overwrite sub-keys each time. Please reopen!
You mentioned lodash in your question, so I thought I should add their easy object set() and get() functions. Just do something like:
_.set(record, 'availability_meta.supplier.price', 99);

These functions let you do more complex things too, like specify array indexes, etc :)

But how would this work? It's strictly for the adventurous with a V8 environment (Chrome or Node harmony), using Object.observe. We observe the the object and capture the addition of new properties. When the "property" foo.bar.baz is added (via an assignment), we detect that this is a dotted property, and transform it into an assignment to record['foo']['bar.baz'] (creating record['foo'] if it does not exist), which in turn is transformed into an assignment to record['foo']['bar']['baz']. It goes like this:

Here's an update as of 2016 and widespread deployment of ES5 and beyond. For IE9+ and all other modern ES5+ capable browsers, you can use Object.keys() so the above code just becomes:

This doesn't have to modify any existing prototype since Object.keys() is now built-in.
Edit: Objects can have symbolic properties that can not be returned via Object.key method. So the answer would be incomplete without mentioning them.
Symbol type was added to the language to create unique identifiers for object properties. The main benefit of the Symbol type is the prevention of overwrites.
Object.keys or Object.getOwnPropertyNames does not work for symbolic properties. To return them you need to use Object.getOwnPropertySymbols.

There's a sort of convention in JavaScript that you don't add things to Object.prototype, because it can break enumerations in various libraries. Adding methods to Object is usually safe, though.
If you know you don't have to worry about hasOwnProperty checks, you can use the Object.keys() method in this way:

This method gets all your object's property names in an array, so you can get the length of that array which is equal to your object's keys' length.
Object.getOwnPropertyNames({"hi":"Hi","msg":"Message"}).length; // => 2
To not mess with the prototype or other code, you could build and extend your own object:

If you always use the add method, the length property will be correct. If you're worried that you or others forget about using it, you could add the property counter which the others have posted to the length method, too.
Of course, you could always overwrite the methods. But even if you do, your code would probably fail noticeably, making it easy to debug. ;)
We can find the length of Object by using:

For some cases it is better to just store the size in a separate variable. Especially, if you're adding to the array by one element in one place and can easily increment the size. It would obviously work much faster if you need to check the size often.
The simplest way is like this:

Where myobject is the object of what you want the length of.

If anything else has been added to Object .prototype, then the suggested code will fail:

I don't think that answer should be the accepted one as it can't be trusted to work if you have any other code running in the same execution context. To do it in a robust fashion, surely you would need to define the size method within myArray and check for the type of the members as you iterate through them.

Run either Object.keys() to get an array that contains the names of only those properties that are enumerable or Object.getOwnPropertyNames() if you want to also include the names of properties that are not enumerable.
Get the .length property of that array.
If you need to do this more than once, you could wrap this logic in a function:

You can always do Object.getOwnPropertyNames(myObject).length to get the same result as [].length would give for normal array.
You can simply use Object.keys(obj).length on any object to get its length. Object.keys returns an array containing all of the object keys (properties) which can come in handy for finding the length of that object using the length of the corresponding array. You can even write a function for this. Let's get creative and write a method for it as well (along with a more convienient getter property):

I am trying to reference an object by a string representation, though everywhere I look I see that using eval() is bad - though can't find a way to do this without using eval()
So my use case:

When the button is clicked I need to access the actual object held at window.app.myData.originalData
Now, I know I can do:

You want to avoid using eval because it can arbitrarily execute JavaScript that you may or may not have control of. In this particular case, you know the exact kind of string you want. In my opinion, I'd use a regular expression to make sure the string just contains property names separated by dots. Security speaking, there is no difference between these two lines of code:
var x = eval("window.foo");
var x = window.foo;
Provided that you can ensure that the attribute cannot be modified in anyway that can cause harm to the site/project that this is being implemented on, I don't see any problems.
I'm not sure if this will work for your situation, but a simple solution that avoids eval may be to add "window.app.myData.originalData" with its JSON data as the property of an object that will remain in scope.
Something like:
var exampleData = { id:1, content:"..." };
var dataStore = { "window.app.myData.originalData": exampleData };
Then, in your click handler:
var retrievedData = dataStore[$(this).data('original-data-object')]; // uses "window.app.myData.originalData" to retrieve exampleData
In this case, you will need to access the data using bracket notation because of the . character in the property name. This approach should be faster and safer than trying to use eval, however.
Is there an easy way to natively determine if a deep property exists within an object in JavaScript? For example, I need to access a property like this:
var myVal = appData.foo.bar.setting;
But there is a chance that either foo, foo.bar, or foo.bar.setting has not been defined yet. In Groovy, we can do something like this:

Is there a similar way to do this in JavaScript, without having to write a custom function or nested if statements? I've found this answer to be useful, but was hoping there was a more elegant and less custom way.
I find this very convenient:

If a property exists, the next part of the sequence will be attempted.
When the expression before && evaluates to false, the next part of the expression will not be checked. If either of myVal.appData.foo.bar.settings is not defined, the value of myVal (undefined( will evaluate to false.
Sorry, it's not great:

The . operator is not really intended for accessing objects like this. Probably using a function would be a good idea.
The optional chaining operator (?.) was introduced in ES2020. Now, you should be able to write:

Check object[prop] == undefined is not semantically correct since it will return false even if the property is defined although its value is undefined; that is why I use hasOwnProperty to check is the property defined. This might not be important if one needs to just fetch the value.
If, after:

myVal is not undefined, it will hold the value of appData.foo.bar.setting.

There's a sort of convention in JavaScript that you don't add things to Object.prototype, because it can break enumerations in various libraries. Adding methods to Object is usually safe, though.
If you know you don't have to worry about hasOwnProperty checks, you can use the Object.keys() method in this way:
Object.keys(myArray).length
Updated: If you're using Underscore.js (recommended, it's lightweight!), then you can just do
_.size({one : 1, two : 2, three : 3});
=> 3
If not, and you don't want to mess around with Object properties for whatever reason, and are already using jQuery, a plugin is equally accessible:

I'm not a JavaScript expert, but it looks like you would have to loop through the elements and count them since Object doesn't have a length method:

#palmsey: In fairness to the OP, the JavaScript documentation actually explicitly refer to using variables of type Object in this manner as "associative arrays".
This method gets all your object's property names in an array, so you can get the length of that array which is equal to your object's keys' length.
Object.getOwnPropertyNames({"hi":"Hi","msg":"Message"}).length; // => 2
To not mess with the prototype or other code, you could build and extend your own object:

If you always use the add method, the length property will be correct. If you're worried that you or others forget about using it, you could add the property counter which the others have posted to the length method, too.
Of course, you could always overwrite the methods. But even if you do, your code would probably fail noticeably, making it easy to debug. ;)
We can find the length of Object by using:

console.log(Object.values(myObject).length);
Here's how and don't forget to check that the property is not on the prototype chain:

This works for me:
var size = Object.keys(myObj).length;
For some cases it is better to just store the size in a separate variable. Especially, if you're adding to the array by one element in one place and can easily increment the size. It would obviously work much faster if you need to check the size often.
The simplest way is like this:
Object.keys(myobject).length
Where myobject is the object of what you want the length of.

And in fairness to #palmsey he was quite correct. They aren't associative arrays; they're definitely objects :) - doing the job of an associative array. But as regards to the wider point, you definitely seem to have the right of it according to this rather fine article I found:

But according to all this, the accepted answer itself is bad practice?
Specify a prototype size() function for Object
If anything else has been added to Object .prototype, then the suggested code will fail:

I don't think that answer should be the accepted one as it can't be trusted to work if you have any other code running in the same execution context. To do it in a robust fashion, surely you would need to define the size method within myArray and check for the type of the members as you iterate through them.
If we have the hash

we can get the length using the length of the keys which is the length of the hash:
keys(hash).length

If you don't care about supporting Internet Explorer 8 or lower, you can easily get the number of properties in an object by applying the following two steps:
Run either Object.keys() to get an array that contains the names of only those properties that are enumerable or Object.getOwnPropertyNames() if you want to also include the names of properties that are not enumerable.
Get the .length property of that array.
If you need to do this more than once, you could wrap this logic in a function:

You can always do Object.getOwnPropertyNames(myObject).length to get the same result as [].length would give for normal array.
You can simply use Object.keys(obj).length on any object to get its length. Object.keys returns an array containing all of the object keys (properties) which can come in handy for finding the length of that object using the length of the corresponding array. You can even write a function for this. Let's get creative and write a method for it as well (along with a more convienient getter property):
