If I have a large string with a space that separates two substrings of varying length, what's the best way to extract each of the substrings from the larger string?
Because this is a string rather than an array, array syntax s[0] will only retrieve the first letter of the string ('a'), rather than the first substring.
Use the split method of the String object:
"abc def".split(' ')[0] // Returns "abc"
Works like this:
"string".split('separator') // Returns array
var arr = "abc def".split(" ");
document.write(arr[0]);
should work
Both above Answer's are right I am just putting it so that user can do some operation with every token. All you need to add a loop for that.

Since .split accepts regular expressions as well, you can use a one that matches semicolons that are only followed by alphanumeric characters that end in : (in effect if they are followed by another key)
/;(?=\w+:)/

here is an approach which we first split the input on ; and then concat the element without : with the previous one; since it shouldn't being spited.

I am trying to change specific word in a string with something else. For example, I want to change 'John' in let name = 'Hi, my name is John.'; to 'Jack'.
I know how to split a string by words or characters. I also know how to remove commas, periods, and other symbols in a string. However, if I split the given string with a separator (" "), I will have 'John.' which I do not want. (I know I can switch 'John.' with 'Jack.' but assume that I have an key and value pairs in an object and I am using the values which are names {Father: Jack, Mother: Susan, ...}

Create a function censor that accepts no arguments. censor will return a function that will accept either two strings, or one string. When two strings are given, the returned function will hold onto the two strings as a pair, for future use. UPDATE: If you want to get ALL occurrences (g), be case insensitive (i), and use boundaries so that it isn't a word within another word (\\b), you can use RegExp:

Using 'Hi, my name is John.'.split(/[,. ]/); will do the job. It will split commas and periods and spaces.

In JavaScript there is a really easy way to do this:
var str = "Hello World";
str = str.split(" ").reverse().join(" ");
console.log(str); // => "World Hello"
Basically, you split the string into an array using a space character as a delimiter so we can get an array of each word, then reverse that array and join them back into a string with the spaces we removed earlier.

How This Works
.split(/[\[\]\.\s]+/) splits the string at points where it finds one or more of the following characters: [] .. Now, since these characters are also found at the beginning and end of the string, .shift() discards the first element, and .pop() discards the last element, both of which are empty strings. However, your may want to use .filter() and your can replace lines 2 and 3 with:
var arr = str.split(/[\[\]\.\s]+/).filter(function(elem) { return elem.length > 0; });
Now you can use jQuery/JS to iterate through the values:
$.each( arr, function(i,v) {
console.log( v ); // outputs the i'th value;
});
And arr.length will give you the number of elements you have.
If you want to get the characters between "[" and "]" and the data is regular and always has the pattern:
'[chars][chars]...[chars]'
then you can get the chars using match to get sequences of characters that aren't "[" or "]":
var values = '[value01][value02 ][value03 ][value04 ]'.match(/[^\[\]]+/g)
which returns an array, so values is:
["value01", "value02 ", "value03 ", "value04 "]
Match is very widely supported, so no cross browser issues.

Matches all words using \w (alphanumeric combos). Whitespace, brackets, dots, square brackets are all non-matching, so they don't get returned.
What I do is create a object to hold results in key/value pairs such as v1:'value01'. You can iterate through this object, or you can access the values directly using objRes.v1

str.split(" "); method splits a String object into an array of strings by separating the string into substrings, where it will find space in string.
then str.filter(res=>res.length>0) will filter out string having zero length (for "virat kohali" string you will get empty sub-string)
