creating a list of books in Javascript - javascript

I'm having a problem trying to sort the booklist I'm creating for an assignment. The titles of the books are supposed to move with the dates and be sorted from oldest to newest after clicking the button. However, I don't know why Don Quixote and Moby Dick don't appear after the button is clicked. Is there something that I am missing or I did wrong? Help is appreciated.
var names = new Array("To Kill a Mockingbird","Jaws","Don Quixote","Moby-Dick","Northern Lights");
var published = new Array("July 11, 1960", "February 1, 1974","July 11, 1615","October 18, 1851","November 12, 1995");
function display()
{
for(var i = 0; i < names.length; i++)
{
var temp = "cell" + i + "0";
document.getElementById(temp).innerHTML = names[i];
temp = "cell" + i + "1";
document.getElementById(temp).innerHTML = published[i];
}
}
function SortIt( )
{
var oldest = 0;
var index = 0;
var j = 0;
var k = 0;
var count = 0;
var temp = 0; var temp2 = "";
count = published.length;
count = names.length;
for (k =0; k <= (count -1); k++ )
{
oldest = Date.parse(published[k]);
index = k;
for (j = (k + 1); j <= (count-1); j++)
{
if (Date.parse(published[j]) < oldest )
{
oldest = Date.parse(published[j]);
index = j;
}
}
if(k != index)
{
temp = published[k];
published[k] = published[index];
published[index] = temp;
temp2 = names[k];
names[k] = index[k];
names[index] = temp2;
}
}

In
temp = published[k];
published[k] = published[index];
published[index] = temp;
temp2 = names[k];
names[k] = index[k];
names[index] = temp2;
you are setting names[k] as index[k], even though index is a int/counter.
What works for me is creating clones of published and names, so that when you are trying to put in a value from the old list, you can reference, for example, oldnames.
The variable count is also set as 2 different values in a row,. I have replaced this section to a call to Math.min, which picks the smallest of the 2 array lengths (Preventing invalid index queries )
Lastly I've saved you some html writing by having a loop in the javascript that creates the inital table
var names = new Array("To Kill a Mockingbird","Jaws","Don Quixote","Moby-Dick","Northern Lights");
var published = new Array("July 11, 1960", "February 1, 1974","July 11, 1615","October 18, 1851","November 12, 1995");
var count = Math.min(names.length,published.length);
function drawTable(){
for(var i = 0; i < count; i++)
{
document.getElementById('workTable').innerHTML+="<tr>"+
"<td> <span id=\"cell"+i+"0\""+"/></td>"+
"<td> <span id=\"cell"+i+"1\""+"/></td>"+
"</tr>"
}
}
function display()
{
for(var i = 0; i < count; i++)
{
var temp = "cell" + i + "0";
document.getElementById(temp).innerHTML = names[i];
temp = "cell" + i + "1";
document.getElementById(temp).innerHTML = published[i];
}
}
function SortIt( )
{
var oldPublished=published.slice();
var oldNames = names.slice();
var oldest = 0;
var index = 0;
var j = 0;
var k = 0;
var temp = 0; var temp2 = "";
for (k =0; k <= (count -1); k++ )
{
oldest = Date.parse(published[k]);
index = k;
for (j = (k + 1); j <= (count-1); j++)
{
if (Date.parse(published[j]) < oldest )
{
oldest = Date.parse(published[j]);
index = j;
}
}
if(k != index)
{
temp = published[k];
published[k] = oldPublished[index];
published[index] = oldPublished[k];
temp2 = names[k];
names[k] = oldNames[index];
names[index] = oldNames[k];
}
}
display();
}
drawTable();

Generated row of table event listener not working instantly

I have a table like this :
I have added an event listener assetTableEvent() to each text box in the table. My issue is when I add new row to the table, i also add the corresponding event listener to it assetTableEvent(), but the total value does not pop while entering value, it shows only when next row has values entered.
function assetTableEvent() {
let total = 0;
for (var k = 0; k < document.getElementById("assetTable").rows.length; k++) {
var a = document.getElementById("v" + k);
var o = document.getElementById("o" + k);
var t = document.getElementById("t" + k);
if (a == null || o == null) {
continue;
}
if (a.value.length > 0 && o.value.length > 0) {
t.value = Number.parseInt(a.value - o.value);
total = (Number.parseInt(t.value) + Number.parseInt(total));
document.getElementById("totalAssets").value = Number.parseInt(total);
}
}
}
I even tried calling assetTableEvent() every time there is a change, but it just does not work. Can somebody help me in Javascript how to make dynamically added rows correspond to event listener like above rows.
HTML for Asset table:
<div id="calcContainer">
<div id = "headingText" >
Child Maintenance Calculator
</div>
<div id="startPage">
<button id="startBtn">Start</button>
</div>
<div id="asset">
<table id="assetTable">
<tr>
<th>Asset</th>
<th>Value</th>
<th>Own</th>
<th>Total</th>
</tr>
</table>
<div id="totalAssetsDiv">
<Label for ="totalAssets">Total Assets</Label>
<input type="number" id = "totalAssets" readonly="true">
<br>
</div>
<div id ="rowOps">
<br> <button id="addRow" class = "addDel">Add Row</button>
<button id="removeRow" class = "addDel1">Delete Row</button><br>
</div>
</div>
And add row event listener :
document.getElementById("addRow").addEventListener("click", function () {
var table = document.getElementById("assetTable");
var row = table.insertRow();
for (let j = 0; j < 4; j++) {
var tb = document.createElement("INPUT");
var value = "", idNum = "";
if (j == 0) {
tb.setAttribute("type", "text");
tb.value = value;
}
else {
tb.setAttribute("type", "number");
}
//Setting textbox id
switch (j) {
case 0:
idNum = "a";
break;
case 1:
idNum = "v";
break;
case 2:
idNum = "o";
break;
case 3:
idNum = "t";
break;
}
tb.id = idNum + (table.rows.length);
if (tb.id.includes('t')) {
tb.setAttribute("readOnly", "true");
}
tb.classList.add("assetTBox");
let cell = row.insertCell(j);
tb.addEventListener("input", assetTableEvent, false);
cell.appendChild(tb);
}
});
Trying to use incremental IDs is more work than it is worth, especially when you start removing rows.
I suggest you use classes instead and delegate the event listener to the table itself. When an input event occurs you get the closest row and query for the elements within that row for the row total, then query all of the rows totals for the master total
Basic example with functional add row
const table = document.querySelector('#myTable'),
cloneRow = table.rows[0].cloneNode(true);
table.addEventListener('input',(e) => {
if (e.target.matches('.qty, .price')) {
const row = e.target.closest('tr'),
price = row.querySelector('.price').valueAsNumber || 0,
qty = row.querySelector('.qty').valueAsNumber || 0;
row.querySelector('.amt').value = qty * price;
setTotalAmt()
}
});
document.querySelector('#add-row').addEventListener('click', (e) => {
table.appendChild(cloneRow.cloneNode(true))
});
function setTotalAmt() {
const sum = [...table.querySelectorAll('.amt')].reduce((a, el) => a + (+el.value || 0), 0)
document.querySelector('#total').value = sum;
}
<button id="add-row">
Add Row
</button>
Total:<input id="total" />
<table id="myTable">
<tr>
<td>Qty:
<input type="number" class="qty" value="0" />
</td>
<td>Price:
<input type="number" class="price" value="0" />
</td>
<td>Amt:
<input class="amt" readonly value="0" />
</td>
</tr>
</table>
#charlietfl 's solition is more elegant but if you wonder what is the problem in your code, you should change the < to <= in k < document.getElementById("assetTable").rows.length; part
function assetTableEvent() {
let total = 0;
for (var k = 0; k <= document.getElementById("assetTable").rows.length; k++) {
var a = document.getElementById("v" + k);
var o = document.getElementById("o" + k);
var t = document.getElementById("t" + k);
if (a == null || o == null) {
continue;
}
if (a.value.length > 0 && o.value.length > 0) {
t.value = Number.parseInt(a.value - o.value);
total = (Number.parseInt(t.value) + Number.parseInt(total));
document.getElementById("totalAssets").value = Number.parseInt(total);
}
}
}
Here is the working example:
document.getElementById("addRow").addEventListener("click", function () {
var table = document.getElementById("assetTable");
var row = table.insertRow();
for (let j = 0; j < 4; j++) {
var tb = document.createElement("INPUT");
var value = "", idNum = "";
if (j == 0) {
tb.setAttribute("type", "text");
tb.value = value;
}
else {
tb.setAttribute("type", "number");
}
//Setting textbox id
switch (j) {
case 0:
idNum = "a";
break;
case 1:
idNum = "v";
break;
case 2:
idNum = "o";
break;
case 3:
idNum = "t";
break;
}
tb.id = idNum + (table.rows.length);
if (tb.id.includes('t')) {
tb.setAttribute("readOnly", "true");
}
tb.classList.add("assetTBox");
let cell = row.insertCell(j);
tb.addEventListener("input", assetTableEvent, false);
cell.appendChild(tb);
}
});
function assetTableEvent() {
let total = 0;
for (var k = 0; k <= document.getElementById("assetTable").rows.length; k++) {
var a = document.getElementById("v" + k);
var o = document.getElementById("o" + k);
var t = document.getElementById("t" + k);
if (a == null || o == null) {
continue;
}
if (a.value.length > 0 && o.value.length > 0) {
t.value = Number.parseInt(a.value - o.value);
total = (Number.parseInt(t.value) + Number.parseInt(total));
document.getElementById("totalAssets").value = Number.parseInt(total);
}
}
}

Iterator through a table and change one picture & caption at a time

I've been messing around with code to change one image and the caption at a time.
Afterwards, it will wait for a couple of seconds then change the next picture and so on.
edit: I redid the solution since (pic+1) wasn't working. The program changes the first image then when it goes to change the next image it throws back an error.
and then the debugger comes in in internet explorer
Is there a way I can combine the logic of the 4 if statements into one possible chunk? For example if iter is 1 it will select the same code but target pic1 & link1.

Your for loop does not have a condition statement in which it evaluates to continue. Check if the i variable is less than the table.rows.length property in the first loop, and if j is less than the row.cells.length property in the second loop.
for (var i = 0, row; i < table.rows.length; i++) {
row = table.rows[i];
for (var j = 0, col; j < row.cells.length ; j++) {
col = row.cells[j]
document.getElementbyId("pic" + i).src = pics[i][j];
document.getElementById("link" + i).innerHTML = labels[i][j];
}
}
Or use a more modern for...of loop which makes it less complex to loop through the HTMLCollection objects of table.rows and row.cells.
for (let row of table.rows) {
for (let cell of row.cells) {
...
}
}
You don't have to iterate through/reference the table's rows or cells. Just reference the IDs of the images and captions, since the IDs are numbered in your case:
for (var i = 0, i < pics.length; i++) {
document.getElementById("pic" + i).src = pics[i];
document.getElementById("link" + i).innerHTML = labels[i];
}

Can anyone help?
You have 17 in funciton Random() while loop:
while ((random < 1 || random > 17) || RandomC(ezer, random))
{
random = parseInt(Math.random() * 100);
}
make it 16:
while ((random < 1 || random > 16) || RandomC(ezer, random))
{
random = parseInt(Math.random() * 100);
}
You problem is that you have 16 element from 1 to 16, and your random function gives 16 random numbers from 1 to 17, in case returned range has number 17 it lacks something from 1 to 16, which means your p element of that nubmer doesn't get filled with content.

Javascript: fetch values from textbox of a dynamic datagrid. (skipping some textboxes)

i have seen similar questions to this but none can assist me.as my code is missing some results and i don't now why.
as seen on the image above the output is 6 results instead of 12
This is the code am using to get the values
//Fetch Sales**********************************************
function fetchsales(){
var Dt = document.getElementById("sDate").value;
var Usr = document.getElementById("UserID").value;
var Stp = document.getElementById("tstamp").value;
var e = document.getElementById("sdepot");
var Dpt = e.options[e.selectedIndex].value;
var sale = new Array();
var Tbl = document.getElementById('tbl_sales'); //html table
var tbody = Tbl.tBodies[0]; // Optional, based on what is rendered
for (var i = 2; i < tbody.rows.length; i++) {
var row = tbody.rows[i];
for (var j = 2; j < row.cells.length; j++) {
var cell = row.cells[j];
// For Every Cell get the textbox value
var unitsold = cell.childNodes[0].value ;
//Get selectbox distributor
var Sdist = row.cells[1].childNodes[0]; //Select box always on second coloumn
var Distributor = Sdist.options[Sdist.selectedIndex].value;
//Get selectbox Product
var Sprod = tbody.rows[1].cells[j].childNodes[0];
var Product = Sprod.options[Sprod.selectedIndex].value;
sale[(j*i)] = new Array ('('+Dt,Dpt,Product,unitsold,Distributor,Usr,Stp+')<br/>');

NB: am hoping to concatenate the result to a mysql insert statement
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
The problem comes from this line:
sale[(j*i)] = new Array ('('+Dt,Dpt,Product,unitsold,Distributor,Usr,Stp+')<br/>');
using the for loops indexes multiplied by themselves doesnt ensure unique array indexes, in some cases they are repeated (like for example 2*3 and 3*2) and the previous value in the array gets overwritten.

Sorting table using javascript sort()

I am trying to sort a table. I've seen several jQuery and JavaScript solutions which do this through various means, however, haven't seen any that use JavaScript's native sort() method. Maybe I am wrong, but it seems to me that using sort() would be faster.
Below is my attempt, however, I am definitely missing something. Is what I am trying to do feasible, or should I abandon it? Ideally, I would like to stay away from innerHTML and jQuery. Thanks
var index = 0; //Index to sort on.
var a = document.getElementById('myTable').rows;
//sort() doesn't work on collection
var b = [];
for (var i = a.length >>> 0; i--;) {
b[i] = a[i];
}
var x_td, y_td;
b.sort(function(x, y) {
//Having to use getElementsByTagName is probably wrong
x_td = x.getElementsByTagName('td')[index].data;
y_td = y.getElementsByTagName('td')[index].data;
return x_td == y_td ? 0 : (x_td < y_td ? -1 : 1);
});
A td element doesn't have a .data property.
If you wanted the text content of the element, and if there's only a single text node, then use .firstChild before .data.
Then when that is done, you need to append the elements to the DOM. Sorting a JavaScript Array of elements doesn't have any impact on the DOM.
Also, instead of getElementsByTagName("td"), you can just use .cells.
b.sort(function(rowx, rowy) {
x_td = rowx.cells[index].firstChild.data;
y_td = rowy.cells[index].firstChild.data;
return x_td == y_td ? 0 : (x_td < y_td ? -1 : 1);
});
var parent = b[0].parentNode;
b.forEach(function(row) {
parent.appendChild(row);
});
If the content that you're comparing is numeric, you should convert the strings to numbers.
If they are text strings, then you should use .localeCompare().
return x_td.localeCompare(y_td);
