Convert date string to Postgres timestamp timezones format - javascript

I have the following date:
25-JAN-18 01.31.02 AM +00:00
and am trying to convert into a Postgres compatible timestamp with time zone format.
I am trying the following code to convert into the compatible format:
document.getElementById("parsedDate3").innerHTML = moment("25-JAN-18 01.31.02.923526 AM +00:00 ", "d-MMM-YY hh.mm.ss A Z");
But I am getting the output as
Mon Jan 01 2018 02:31:02 GMT+0100
Can anyone please help me with this.

You are using lower-case d which is for the day of the week, 0 (Sunday) through 6 (Saturday).
Use upper-case D instead, which is for the day of the month.
Note that Moment's formatting tokens are slightly different than in other libraries and languages, so check the chart in the docs carefully.
Also:
In your code you have 6 extra digits following the seconds. If you need to account for those, use SSSSSS. Otherwise they are ignored.
You shouldn't assign a Moment object directly to an HTML element's innerHTML property. Instead, call the .format() function on the Moment object first to generate a string. You can optionally pass an argument to this function, to control the output format.

You can simply do it in PostgreSQL:
SELECT to_timestamp('25-JAN-18 01.31.02.923526 AM +00:00', 'DD-MON-YY HH.MI.SS.US AM TZH:TZM');
to_timestamp
-------------------------------
2018-01-25 02:31:02.923526+01
(1 row)
This will work for PostgreSQL v11 or better.
Earlier versions of to_timestamp cannot parse the time zone information yet.
If you need it to work on 9.6, and you know that the time zone is always going to be +00:00, you could simple omit the TZH:TZM in the format string.

Date Handling Unix Date Incorrectly (or I'm using Date incorrectly?)

I have the following data structure. The first column is intervals. The first row of the interval datum is a unix time and the subsequent data are intervals (i.e. 300*1, 300*2, ect). The other column is the data values. Here is the head of the data:

And here I went about converting the unix time to a Date object. The a here is ornamental, so I slice() at 1 like so:

I also tried using parseInt() instead of round(). The console shows that this unix time is equivalent to: Jan 18 1970 which I had quite the guffaw at. Then I got to thinking, maybe I did something wrong. It's supposed to be a very recent date -- March 16th 2018. This is strange because my understanding is that javascript can be passed a unix date directly as per this answer.
I also checked the unix time at a conversion site: www.onlineconversion.com/unix_time.htm
Which confirmed that it's indeed a March 16th 2018 timestamp.
Question: Why is this unix date for my March 2018 data being treated like a 1970's date? Maybe the a is actually doing something after all... Anyway, what is the correct way to handle this time stamp? It's only 10 numerical digits, it does not seem to be a precision problem. Date can handle unix times up to 13 digits I believe.
As per the documentation, when you invoke new Date(value) with an integer value, it is used as the number of milliseconds since January 1, 1970. To get the date you want, the value 1521207300 appears to be number of seconds instead of milliseconds. That is, you missed a factor of 1000. new Date(1521207300000) gives Fri Mar 16 2018.
When I take away new from new Date it seems to be ok. Not sure why though.
The documentation mentions the different behavior:
Note: JavaScript Date objects can only be instantiated by calling JavaScript Date as a constructor: calling it as a regular function (i.e. without the new operator) will return a string rather than a Date object; unlike other JavaScript object types, JavaScript Date objects have no literal syntax.
It seems when called as a function Date(value), it treats the value as the number of seconds, instead of milliseconds. I didn't dig deep enough to confirm this, because it doesn't matter: the documentation says to not use it this way (and since it gives a string instead of a date object, it's not very useful anyway).

Convert ISO Date string to date in JavaScript

Need help to convert exactly from ISO Date string to Date:
I have an ISO string date: "2016-01-23T22:23:32.927".
But when I use new Date(dateString) to convert Date, the result is wrong:
var date = new Date("2016-01-23T22:23:32.927");
The result is: Sun Jan 24 2016 05:23:32 GMT+0700. It's not true. I want the date is 23 not 24.
Please help me. Thanks a lot!
You need to supply a timezone offset with your iso date. Since there isn't one, it assumes the date to be in GMT and when you log it out, it prints it in the timezone of your browser. I think that if you pass "2016-01-23T22:23:32.927+07:00" to new Date() you would get the value you are expecting.
JavaScript environments (browser, node,...) use a single timezone for formatting dates as strings. Usually this is your system's timezone. Based on the output you get, yours is GMT+0700.
So what happened:
The string you passed as ISO format to the Date constructor doesn't specify a timezone. In this case it is treated as UTC.
When you then output the date (I'll assume with console.log), it is converted to the timezone of your environment. In this case 7 hours where added.
If that doesn't suit you, you can change the way you output the date. This depends on what output you want, e.g.:
If you just want the UTC timezone again, you can use date.toISOString().
If you want to output it in another timezone, you can call date.getTimezoneOffset() and figure out the difference between both timezones. You'd then probably need to get the individual date parts and add/subtract the timezone difference accordingly. At this point you could consider using an existing library, taking into account their possible disadvantages.
If you're willing and able to add a dependency, I recommend using moment.js for this. It makes date handling in Javascript much more straightforward and a lot safer, and fixes your specific problem right out of the box.
To do this, 1st load it from a CDN, e.g. Moment.JS 2.14.1 minified. Then use it as follows:

...i.e. your desired result :)

JS Date() - Leading zero on days

A leading zero for the day within a string seems to break the Javascript Date object in Chrome. There are also some inconsistencies between browsers, since Firefox handles the leading zero correctly, but fails when the zero is not included. See this example: https://jsfiddle.net/3m6ovh1f/3/

Why? Is there a good way to work around/with the leading zero?
Please note, the strings are coming from MySQL via AJAX and all dates will contain the leading zero, and I can fix this by formating the dates server-side. What format would work the best?

Just to specify what my problem was, it looks like Chrome is applying a time zone to the YYYY-MM-DD format, which reverts the Nov. 1st date back to the Oct. 31st date (because of my EDT local time).
According to ECMA-262 (5.1):
The function first attempts to parse the format of the String according to the rules called out in Date Time String Format (15.9.1.15). If the String does not conform to that format the function may fall back to any implementation-specific heuristics or implementation-specific date formats.
The date/time string format as described in 15.9.1.15 is YYYY-MM-DDTHH:mm:ss.sssZ. It can also be a shorter representation of this format, like YYYY-MM-DD.
2015-11-1 is not a valid date/time string for Javascript (note it's YYYY-MM-D and not YYYY-MM-DD). Thus, the implementation (browser) is able to do whatever it wants with that string. It can attempt to parse the string in a different format, or it can simply say that the string is an invalid date. Chrome chooses the former (see DateParser::Parse) and attempts to parse it as a "legacy" date. Firefox seems to choose the latter, and refuses to parse it.
Now, your claim that new Date('2015-11-01') doesn't work in Chrome is incorrect. As the string conforms to the date/time string format, Chrome must parse it to be specification compliant. In fact, I just tried it myself -- it works in Chrome.
So, what are your options here?
Use the correct date/time format (i.e. YYYY-MM-DD or some extension of it).
Use the new Date (year, month, date) constructor, i.e. new Date(2015, 10, 1) (months go from 0-11) in this case.
Whichever option is up to you, but there is a date/time string format that all specification compliant browsers should agree on.
As an alternative, why not use unix timestamps instead? In JavaScript, you would would multiply the timestamp value by 1000,
e.g
var _t = { time: 1446220558 };
var _d = new Date( _t.time*1000 );
Test in your browser console:
new Date( 14462205581000 );
// prints Fri Oct 30 2015 11:55:58 GMT-0400 (EDT)
There's a little benefit in it as well (if data comes via JS) - you'd save 2 bytes on every date element '2015-10-30' VS 1446220558 :)

How can I parse these strings into UTC dates?

I'm scraping a site, and the dates come in two forms:
11-22-2011 07:41 AM
Today # 07:41 AM
Both of these are GMT-8. I'd like to get a unix timestamp out of these, so that I can construct a meaningful date object
Any idea what timezone this might be? Around a month ago, the site was gibing GMT-9 times. Can javascript handle Daylight Saving Time automatically?
I'm having great difficultly parsing them. Part of the problem is the time zone.
At the moment, I'm using Date.js' parseExact:
date = Date.parseExact(date + ' PDT', 'MM-dd-yyyy H:mm tt zzz');
Hovever, this seems to get parse 12AM as 12:00, not 0:00. Additionally, I'm at a total loss as to how to handle the ones starting with today #.
When I try both of your examples using the interactive parser at http://www.datejs.com/ I get the expected results.
The timezone in question is likely "US West Coast", aka "Pacific Time".
Unfortunately that means different things at different times of the year. In the spring and summer that timezone is called "PDT" (GMT-0700) and the rest of the time it's called "PST" (GMT-0800).
To further complicate matters the dates on which that changes aren't the same as the dates on which other zones (e.g. in Europe) change.
I don't think there's a way of specifying a timezone value to Date.js that can take that into account automatically.
You could write your own, timezone-aware date parsing logic which takes into account the timezone of the remote server.
pseudo-code:
if date starts with "Today #"
replace "Today #" with currentDateInRemoteTimezone in date
endif
parse_timezone-aware(date)
Why not just add HHHH:mm zzz to get 12:00?
Use a lowercase h for the hour to get 1-12. The uppercase H gives 0-23. From your examples I would use a format of
MM-dd-yyyy hh:mm tt

You should handle "Today # " separately. When you find that string, expect the next token to be a time in the form hh:mm tt. Parse the second part as a time and combine it with today's (local) date. That is not hard to do programmatically with Date.js functions, but you won't find a single format string that captures the "Today #" part (as you know).

javascript timezone format

I need to format a javascript Date to send via json to the server. The server expects the time to be in the format according to this example
2011-08-31T06:49:28.931 -0700
which it conveniently tells me when I try to submit something like
2011-08-31T06:49:28.931 -07:00
The trouble I am having is with the timezone part, -0700. I've been looking at the Date API, and don't see a way to specify the timezone format. I can do d.getTimezoneOffset, but it returns 240 (Im in EDT I think) for me.
So, I can convert 240 to 0400 to represent 4 hours. I am worried however about correctness for other timezones. My questions are
1) How to convert the result of the getTimezoneOffset() into the required format, and how to determine what the sign should be (thats the part I am worried about)?
2) Is there a way to get the format off the date object itself so I don't have to do anything custom? If i do d.toString() I get "Wed Aug 31 2011 09:48:27 GMT-0400 (EDT)", so here the timezone part is in the format I want. So it might be possible. Maybe the best solution is to just use a regex to grab the timezone off d.toString()...
3) Extra credit: is the format the server requires some sort of standard?
Update: using match(/^.*GMT(-?\d*)/) returns "-0400" at index 1 of the array. Perhaps I should just use that? Im wondering if that regex will work for all timezones in the context of the sign.

You might want to use one of the date/time formatting libraries that bakes in support for this timezone format (such as http://jacwright.com/projects/javascript/date_format/). In any case, you're right: there really is no good way to control the format output.
As far as the regex goes I don't know that all browsers consistently use the GMT string format, so that may not be the best path forward.
