Callback definition closure issue - javascript

I run into a bit of confusion regarding scoping with respect to where a callback is defined.

However, the following doesnt work

I would expect that since the function is passed as an argument and has not been defined before, its definition takes place inside 'fun' and therefore it would have access to b. Instead, it looks a lot like the function is first defined in the scope where its passed and THEN passed as an argument. Any ideas/pointers?
EDIT: Some extra pointers.
someFunction("a")
We couldn't possibly claim that "a" is a definition. What happens here implicitly is that "a" is assigned to a variable named by the argument name so var argumentNameInDefintion = "a". This happens in the body of someFunction.
Similarly we cant claim {} is a definition in : someFunction({}). So why would:
someFunction(function(){})
decide that function(){} is a definition is beyond me. Had it been
var a = function(){}
someFunction(a)
everything would make perfect sense. Maybe its just how the language works.

Scoping in JavaScript is lexical. If you look at your examples, you can see that where printingFunction is defined, lexically (e.g., in the source text) b is declared in a containing scope. But in your second example, it isn't. That's why b can't be resolved in your second example but can in your first.
The way it works is that when a function is created, it has a reference to a conceptual object containing the variables and such in the scope in which it's created (which has a fancy name: "Lexical Environment object"); and that object has a reference to the one that contains it. When looking up a variable reference, the JavaScript engine looks at the current lexical environment object and, if it finds the variable, uses it; otherwise, it looks to the previous one in the chain, and so on up to the global one.

The issue stems from me not understanding that function(){} on its own is a definition and so is "a" and {}. Since these are definitions then the definition scope of the function passed is appropriately placed where it is and the world makes sense again.

In first case, it is forming a closure and has access to the variable "b" but in second case it does not form a closure at all. If you put a debugger just before the cb() inside the function, you will notice that there is no closure formed and the reason of that being the callback function is suplied to the function as an argument and it becomes local to that function which does not have any knowledge of the variable b.
Think of it as two different functions, one in which it has a local variable "b" and in other no local variable but we are trying to access it which throws the reference error.

Can you get the property name through which a function was called?

I've done a lot of searching and some playing around, and I'm pretty sure the answer to this question is no, but I'm hoping a JavaScript expert might have a trick up his sleeve that can do this.
A JavaScript function can be referenced by multiple properties, even on completely different objects, so there's no such thing as the object or property that holds the function. But any time you actually call a function, you must have done so via a single object (at the very least, the window object for global function calls) and property on that object.
(A function can also be called via a function-local variable, but we can consider the function-local variable to be a property of the activation object of the scope, so that case is not an exception to this rule.)
My question is, is there a way to get that property name that was used to call the function, from inside the function body? I don't want to pass in the property name as an argument, or closure around a variable in an enclosing scope, or store the name as a separate property on the object that holds the function reference and have the function access that name property on the this object.
Here's an example of what I want to do:

From my searching, it looks like the closest you can get to the above is arguments.callee.name, but that won't work, because that only returns the name that was fixed to the function object when it was defined, and only if it was defined as a named function (which the function in my example is not).
I also considered that maybe you could iterate over all properties of the this object and test for equality with arguments.callee to find the property whose value is a reference to the function itself, but that won't work either (in the general case), because there could be multiple references to the function in the object's own (or inherited) property set, as in my example. (Also, that seems like it would be kind of an inefficient solution.)
Can this be done?
Short answer:
No, you cannot get "the property name" used to call your function.
There may be no name at all, or multiple names across different scopes, so "the property name" is pretty ill defined.
arguments.callee is deprecated and should not be used.
There exists no solution that does not use arguments or closure.
Long answer:
As thefourtheye commented, you should rethink what you are trying to do and ask that instead in a new question. But there are some common misconceptions, so I will try to explain why you cannot get the "simple property name".
The reason is because it is not simple.
Before we go ahead, let us clarify something. Activation Objects are not objects at all.
The ECMAScript 5.1 specification calls them Environment Records (10.2.1), but a more common term is Scope chain.
In a browser the global scope is (often) the window object, but all other scopes are not objects.
There may be an object that you use to call a function, and when you call a function you must be in some scope.
With few exceptions, scopes are not objects, and objects are not scopes.
Then, there are many names.
When you call a function, you need to reference it, such as through an object property. This reference may have a name.
Scope chain has declarations, which always have a name.
A Function (the real function, not reference) may also have a function name - your arguments.callee.name - which is fixed at declaration.
Not only are they different names, they are not (always) the "the property name" you are seeking.

So, a function reference may comes from a binding (e.g. function declaration), an Object (arguments.callee), or a variable.
They are all References (8.7). And reference does have a name (so to speak).
The catch is, a function reference does not always come from an object or the scope chain, and its name is not always defined.
For example a common closure technique:
(function(i){ /* what is my name? */ })(i)
Even if the reference does have a name, a function call (11.2.3) does not pass the reference or its name to the function in any way.
Which keeps the JavaScript engine sane. Consider this example:
eval("(new Function('return function a(){}'))()")() // Calls function 'a'.
The final function call refers the eval function, which refers the result of a new global scope (in strict mode, anyway), which refers a function call statement, which refers a group, which refers an anonymous Function object, and which contains code that expresses and returns a function called 'a'.
If you want to get the "property name" from within a, which one should it get? "eval"? "Function"? "anonymous"? "a"? All of them?
Before you answer, consider complications such as function access across iframes, which has different globals as well as cross origin restriction, or interaction with native functions (Function.prototype.bind for example), and you will see how it quickly becomes hell.
This is also why arguments.caller, __caller__, and other similar techniques are now all deprecated.
The "property name" of a function is even more ill defined than the caller, almost unrealistic.
At least caller is always an execution context (not necessary a function).
So, not knowing what your real problem is, the best bet of getting the "property name" is using closure.
there is no reflection, but you can use function behavior to make adding your own fairly painless, and without resorting to try/catch, arguments.callee, Function.caller, or other strongly frowned-upon behavior, just wasteful looping:

a try/catch version
is not confused by repeated uses
can handle new and deleted (renamed) properties
Caveats:
doesn't work on private vars, which have no property name
partially loops owner object each access
slower computation than a memorized property or code-time repetition
won't survive call/bind/apply
wont survive a setTimeout without bind() or a wrapper function
cannot easily be cloned
honestly, i think all the ways of accomplishing this task are "less than ideal", to be polite, and i would recommend you just bite the coding bullet and pass extra key names, or automate that by using a method to add properties to a blank object instead of coding it all in an object literal.

You can use a factory to create the function, and a call stack parsing hack that will probably get me arrested.
This solution works in my version of Chrome on Windows 7, but the approach could be adapted to other browsers (if they support stack and show the property name in the call stack like Chrome does). I would not recommend doing this in production code as it is a pretty brittle hack; instead improve the architecture of your program so that you do not need to rely on knowing the name of the calling property. You didn't post details about your problem domain so this is just a fun little thought experiment; to wit:

eval calls function which calls eval which defines function

I know the title sounds convoluted, but to keep things dynamic there is a purpose for this rest assured ;)
Examples (note that these example codes are assumed to be within an outer eval)

Question is: how do I expand the scope of a function definition to just outside of the function it was defined within? I know about making an eval global (see alternate myfunction below), but that seems like overkill, I just want to increase the scope to the outer eval is all. Is this possible?

The examples only define one function to keep is simple, but I wish expand it so that myfunction defines many functions, and what functions it defines is dynamic depending on other factors. Also I wish to retain the function names as well as the definitions. I may end up just putting the contents of myfunction into the outer eval if I can't find a solution other than making eval call globally, then I have to copy over the contents to everyplace that uses it.

Maybe you could make a var in outer eval, have myfunction return the address of the function definition to that var. However, I wish to retain the function names as well as the definitions.

eval() does execute within the local scope but that isn't your problem.
First, ditch eval()!
Second, think clearly on what you want without eval(). Even better please update the question when you have that.
Since I can't understand the actual question here are some guesses:
1. Reference to a particular object
If you want a reference to this of a particular object and the current context isn't sufficient Then use something like this question to "bind" (included in ecma 5) your new function to this.
You'll still have reference to the local closure of course.
2. Function that has a specific closure
If you want to call a function whose scope is "further out" or different than your "current scope" then define "that function" in the scope you want it to have (the closure) but then use a reference to "that function" that inner scope has
e.g.

Well, since ECMA6 hasn't arrived yet, functions are about the best way to create scopes in JS. If you wrap a variable declaration of sorts in an IIFE (Immediately Invoked Function Expression), that variable will not be created globally. Same goes for function declarations.
If you're given the seemingly daunting task of clearing a script of all global variables, all you need to do is wrap the entire script in a simple (function(){/*script here*/}());, and no globals are created, lest they are implied globals, but that's just a lazy fix. This pattern is sooo much more powerful.

The basic JS function call live-cycle sort of works like this:

==> function returns, scope object (all vars and args) are GC'ed
Like all objects in JS, an object is flagged for GC (Garbage Collection) as soon as that object is not referenced anymore. But consider the following:

When the IIFE returns, foo is assigned its return value, which is another function. Now localFoo was declared in the scope of the IIFE, and there is no way to get to that object directly. At first glance you might expect localFoo to be GC'ed.
But hold on, the function that is being returned (and assigned to foo still references that object, so it can't be gc'ed. In other words: the scope object outlives the function call, and a closure is created.
The localFoo object, then, will not be GC'ed until the variable foo either goes out of scope or is reassigned another value and all references to the returned function are lost.
Take a look at one of the linked answers (the one with the diagrams), In that answer there's a link to an article, from where I stole the images I used. That should clear things up for you, if this hasn't already.
An IIFE can return nothing, but expose its scope regardless:

This IIFE returns nothing (implied undefined), yet console.log(foo.getLocal()) will log the empty object literal. foo itself will also be assigned property. But wait, I can do you one better. Assume foo has been passed through the code above once over:

What will this log? Indeed, it'll log true time and time again. Objects are never copied in JS, their references are copied, but the object is always the same. Change it once in some scope, and those changes will be shared across all references (logically).
This is just to show you that closures can be difficult to get your head round at first, but this also shows how powerful they can be: you can pass an object through various IIFE's, each time setting a new method that has access to its own, unique scope that other methdods can't get to.

Closers aren't all that easy for the JS engines to Garbage Collect, but lately, that's not that big of an issue anymore.

Well the above pattern is called the immediate function. This function do 3 things:-
The result of this code is an expression that does all of the following in a single statement:
Creates a function instance
Executes the function
Discards the function (as there are no longer any references to it after the statement
has ended)
This is used by the JS developers for creating a variables and functions without polluting the global space as it creates it's own private scope for vars and functions.
In the above example the function f(){} is in the private scope of the immediate function, you can't invoke this function at global or window scope.
Browser-based JavaScript only has two scopes available: Global and Function. This means that any variables you create are in the global scope or confined to the scope of the function that you are currently in.
Sometimes, often during initialization, you need a bunch of variables that you only need once. Putting them in the global scope isn't appropriate bit you don't want a special function to do it.
Enter, the immediate function. This is a function that is defined and then immediately called. That's what you are seeing in Crockford's (and others') code. It can be anonymous or named, without defeating the purpose of avoiding polluting the global scope because the name of the function will be local to the function body.
It provides a scope for containing your variables without leaving a function lying around. Keeps things clean.

Clarification of JavaScript variable scope

I already know how to make this code work, but my question is more about why does it work like this, as well as am I doing stuff right.
The simplest example I can make to showcase my issue is this :
Lets say I have a function that increments the value of an input field by 10 on the press of a button.

The above code doesnt work because the parseValue method doesn't properly return the value var when executed inside the incrementValue method.
To solve it apparently I have to set the scopeTest.parseValue( element, value ); parameter to the value variable like this:
value = scopeTest.parseValue( element, value );
Than the code works.
But my question is why? Why is this extra variable assignment step necessary, why the return statement is not enough? Also I am doing everything right with my functions/methods, or is this just the way JavaScript works?

Because the value parameter to parseValue is just a reference. Yes, you can change the object, because you have a reference, but if you assign to the reference it now points at a different object.
The original version is unchanged. Yes, the return was "enough", but you saved the new object in a variable with a lifetime that ended at the next line of code.
People say that JavaScript passes objects by reference, but taking this too literally can be confusing. All object handles in JavaScript are references. This reference is not itself passed by reference, that is, you don't get a double-indirect pointer. So, you can change the object itself through a formal parameter but you cannot change the call site's reference itself.
This is mostly a scope issue. The pass-by-* issue is strange to discuss because the sender variable and the called functions variable have the same name. I'll try anyway.
A variable has a scope in which it is visible. You can see it as a place to store something in. This scope is defined by the location of your function. Meaning where it is in your source code (in the global scope or inside a function scope). It is defined when you write the source code not how you call functions afterwards.
Scopes can nest. In your example there are four scopes. The global scope and each function has a scope. The scopes of your functions all have the global scope as a parent scope. Parent scope means that whenever you try to access a name/variable it is searched first in the function scope and if it isn't found the search proceeds to the parent scope until the name/variable is found or the global scope has been reached (in that case you get an error that it can't be found).
It is allowed to define the same name multiple times. I think that is the source of your confusion. The name "value" for your eyes is always the same but it exists three times in your script. Each function has defined it: parseValue and incrementValue as parameter and init as local var. This effect is called shadowing. It means that all variables with name 'value' are always there but if you lookup the name one is found earlier thus making the other invisible/shadowed.
In this case "value" is treated similar in all three functions because the scope of a local var and a parameter is the same. It means that as soon as you enter one of the methods you enter the function scope. By entering the scope the name "value" is added to the scope chain and will be found first while executing the function. And the opposite is true. If the function scope is left the "value" is removed from the scope chain and gets invisible and discarded.
It is very confusing here because you call a function that takes a parameter "value" with something that has the name "value" and still they mean different things. Being different there is a need to pass the value from one "value" to the other. What happens is that the value of the outer "value" is copied to the inner "value". That what is meant with pass-by-value. The value being copied can be a reference to an object which is what most people make believe it is pass-by-reference. I'm sorry if that sounds confusing but there is too much value naming in here.
The value is copied from the outer function to the called function and lives therefor only inside the called function. If the function ends every change you did to it will be discarded. The only possibility is the return your "side effect". It means your work will be copied back to a variable shortly before the function gets discarded
To other alternative is indeed leaving of parameters and work with the scope chain, e.g. the global scope. But I strongly advize you not to do that. It seems to be easy to use but it produces a lot of subtle errors which will make your life much harder. The best thing to do is to make sure variables have the most narrow scope (where they are used) and pass the values per function parameters and return values.
This isn't a scoping issue, it's a confusion between pass-by-reference and pass-by-value.
In JavaScript, all numbers are passed by value, meaning this:

Objects, and arrays are passed by reference, meaning:
function foo( obj ){

// value.val == 20;
As others have said it's a pass-by-ref vs pass-by-val.
Given: function foo (){return 3+10;} foo();
What happens? The operation is performed, but you're not setting that value anywhere.
Whereas: result = foo();
The operation performs but you've stored that value for future use.
It is slightly a matter of scope
var param = 0;
function foo( param ) {
param = 1;
}
foo(param);
console.log(param); // still retains value of 0
Why?
There is a param that is global, but inside the function the name of the argument is called param, so the function isn't going to use the global. Instead param only applies the local instance (this.param). Which, is completely different if you did this:
var param = 0;
function foo() { // notice no variable
param = 1; // references global
}
foo(param);
console.log(param); // new value of 1
Here there is no local variable called param, so it uses the global.

I see this all the time in javascript sources but i've never really found out the real reason this construct is used. Why is this needed?

This defines a function closure
This is used to create a function closure with private functionality and variables that aren't globally visible.
Consider the following code:

var test = true;
})();
variable test is not visible anywhere else but within the function closure where it's defined.
What is a closure anyway?
Function closures make it possible for various scripts not to interfere with each other even though they define similarly named variables or private functions. Those privates are visible and accessible only within closure itself and not outside of it.
Check this code and read comments along with it:

What it actually does?
As you already know this
creates a function:
function() { ... }
and immediately executes it:
(func)();
this function may or may not accept additional parameters.
jQuery plugins are usually defined this way, by defining a function with one parameter that plugin manipulates within:
(function(paramName){ ... })(jQuery);
But the main idea is still the same: define a function closure with private definitions that can't directly be used outside of it.
That construct is known as a self-executing anonymous function, which is actually not a very good name for it, here is what happens (and why the name is not a good one). This:
function abc() {
//stuff
}
Defines a function called abc, if we wanted an anonymous function (which is a very common pattern in javascript), it would be something along the lines of:
function() {
//stuff
}
But, if you have this you either need to associate it with a variable so you can call it (which would make it not-so-anonymous) or you need to execute it straight away. We can try to execute it straight away by doing this:
function() {
//stuff
}();
But this won't work as it will give you a syntax error. The reason you get a syntax error is as follows. When you create a function with a name (such as abc above), that name becomes a reference to a function expression, you can then execute the expression by putting () after the name e.g.: abc(). The act of declaring a function does not create an expression, the function declaration is infact a statement rather than an expression. Essentially, expression are executable and statements are not (as you may have guessed). So in order to execute an anonymous function you need to tell the parser that it is an expression rather than a statement. One way of doing this (not the only way, but it has become convention), is to wrap your anonymous function in a set of () and so you get your construct:
(function() {
//stuff
})();
An anonymous function which is immediately executed (you can see how the name of the construct is a little off since it's not really an anonymous function that executes itself but is rather an anonymous function that is executed straight away).
Ok, so why is all this useful, one reason is the fact that it lets you stop your code from polluting the global namespace. Because functions in javascript have their own scope any variable inside a function is not visible globally, so if we could somehow write all our code inside a function the global scope would be safe, well our self-executing anonymous function allows us to do just that. Let me borrow an example from John Resig's old book:
// Create a new anonymous function, to use as a wrapper
(function(){

// Which uses the 'hidden' variable

// Close off the anonymous function and execute it

All our variables and functions are written within our self-executing anonymous function, our code is executed in the first place because it is inside a self-executing anonymous function. And due to the fact that javascript allows closures, i.e. essentially allows functions to access variables that are defined in an outer function, we can pretty much write whatever code we like inside the self-executing anonymous function and everything will still work as expected.
But wait there is still more :). This construct allows us to solve a problem that sometimes occurs when using closures in javascript. I will once again let John Resig explain, I quote:
Remember that closures allow you to reference variables that exist
within the parent function. However, it does not provide the value of
the variable at the time it is created; it provides the last value of
the variable within the parent function. The most common issue under
which you’ll see this occur is during a for loop. There is one
variable being used as the iterator (e.g., i). Inside of the for loop,
new functions are being created that utilize the closure to reference
the iterator again. The problem is that by the time the new closured
functions are called, they will reference the last value of the
iterator (i.e., the last position in an array), not the value that you
would expect. Listing 2-16 shows an example of using anonymous
functions to induce scope, to create an instance where expected
closure is possible.

Essentially what all of that means is this, people often write naive javascript code like this (this is the naive version of the loop from above):
for ( var i = 0; i < items.length; i++ ) {
var item = items[i];
// Bind a function to the elment
obj[ "on" + item ] = function() {
alert( "Thanks for your " + items[i] );
};
}
The functions we create within the loop are closures, but unfortunately they will lock in the last value of i from the enclosing scope (in this case it will probably be 2 which is gonna cause trouble). What we likely want is for each function we create within the loop to lock in the value of i at the time we create it. This is where our self-executing anonymous function comes in, here is a similar but perhaps easier to understand way of rewriting that loop:

Because we invoke our anonymous function on every iteration, the parameter we pass in is locked in to the value it was at the time it was passed in, so all the functions we create within the loop will work as expected.
There you go, two good reasons to use the self-executing anonymous function construct and why it actually works in the first place.
It's used to define an anonymous function and then call it. I haven't tried but my best guess for why there are parens around the block is because JavaScript needs them to understand the function call.
It's useful if you want to define a one-off function in place and then immediately call it. The difference between using the anonymous function and just writing the code out is scope. All the variables in the anonymous function will go out of scope when the function's over with (unless the vars are told otherwise, of course). This can be used to keep the global or enclosing namespace clean, to use less memory long-term, or to get some "privacy".
It is an "anonymous self executing function" or "immediately-invoked-function-expression". Nice explanation from Ben Alman here.
I use the pattern when creating namespaces
var APP = {};
(function(context){
})(APP);
Such a construct is useful when you want to make a closure - a construct helps create a private "room" for variables inaccessible from outside. See more in this chapter of "JavaScript: the good parts" book:

In the example shown on top of page 38, you see that the variable "status" is hidden within a closure and cannot be accessed anyway else than calling the get_status() method.
I'm not sure if this question is answered already, so apologies if I'm just repeating stuff.
In JavaScript, only functions introduce new scope. By wrapping your code in an immediate function, all variables you define exist only in this or lower scope, but not in global scope.
So this is a good way to not pollute the global scope.
There should be only a few global variables. Remember that every global is a property of the window object, which already has a lot of properties by default. Introducing a new scope also avoids collisions with default properties of the window object.
