Highcharts not showing up in ruby web app - javascript

Will someone tell me why my high charts aren't coming up on my ruby sinatra web application. I'm trying to pull data from my dynamodb table and put that into charts. I downloaded my dynamodb items into a csv then converted that to a json file hoping that would help. I can go on high charts website and do a demo and it loads in my website just not mine.
This is my synchronize-chart.js
$(function() {
$('#synchronized').bind('mousemove touchmove', function(e) {
var chart,
point,
i;
for (i = 0; i < Highcharts.charts.length; i = i + 1) {
chart = Highcharts.charts[i];
if(chart.renderTo.className != 'chart'){
continue;
}
e = chart.pointer.normalize(e); // Find coordinates within the chart
point = chart.series[0].searchPoint(e, true); // Get the hovered point
if (point) {
point.onMouseOver(); // Show the hover marker
chart.tooltip.refresh(point); // Show the tooltip
chart.xAxis[0].drawCrosshair(e, point); // Show the crosshair
}
}
});
/**
* Override the reset function, we do not need to hide the tooltips and crosshairs.
*/
Highcharts.Pointer.prototype.reset = function() {
return undefined;
};
/**

var thisChart = this.chart;

Highcharts Custom SVG Marker Symbol is Shaped Different in Legend

the custom SVG marker symbol I have drawn is rendered differently in the legend than in the chart. I have drawn the marker that I need for the chart but in the legend, the symbol has a thin line to the left.
I have attached a picture below and will include the code, I have spent too much time on this and don't have anyone to ask on this topic. If anyone can help me out, it would be greatly appreciated.
function renderChart(data, startRange, endRange) {
// Create custom marker
Highcharts.SVGRenderer.prototype.symbols.lineBar = function (x, y, w, h) {
return ['M', x + w / 2, y + h / 2, 'L', x + w + 10, y + h / 2, 'z'];
};
if (Highcharts.VMLRenderer) {
Highcharts.VMLRenderer.prototype.symbols.lineBar = Highcharts.SVGRenderer.prototype.symbols.lineBar;
}
var chart = Highcharts.chart({
chart: {
renderTo: 'system-load-scheduler',
type: 'line',
},
navigation: {
buttonOptions: {
enabled: false
}
},
title: {
text: ''
},
yAxis: {
min: 0,
title: {
text: 'Tasks'
},
labels: {
style: {
color: 'blue'
}
},
categories: generateCategories(data),
},
xAxis: {
type: 'datetime',
dateTimeLabelFormats: {
day: '%b %d'
},
title: {
text: 'Date'
}
},
tooltip: {
headerFormat: '<b>{series.name}</b><br>',
pointFormat: 'Scheduled {point.x:%b. %e} at {point.x:%l:%M%P}'
},
plotOptions: {
line: {
marker: {
enabled: true
}
},
series: {
cursor: 'pointer',
stickyTracking: false,
marker: {
states: {
hover: {
radiusPlus: 0,
lineWidthPlus: 1,
halo: {
size: 0
}
}
}
},

halo: {

}
}
}
}
},
legend: {
enabled: true,
symbolPadding: 20
},
series: generateSeries(data, startRange, endRange)
});
chart.yAxis[0].labelGroup.element.childNodes.forEach(function (label) {
label.style.cursor = 'hand';
label.onclick = function () {
var idx = ctrl.allTaskNames.indexOf(this.textContent);
renderTaskInfo(ctrl.data[idx]);
ctrl.scheduler.taskIdx = idx;
ctrl.backService.saveObject(CTRL_DASHBOARD_SCHEDULER_STR, ctrl.scheduler);
};
});
return chart;
}
You can erase the line with just some CSS code

High Charts windrose from API data (JSON)

I'm quite new here (and to web development in general), so please forgive any misuses that I perpetuate... I'm trying to create a basic windrose plot with data returned (in JSON) from the MesoWest Mesonet API service. I'm using HighCharts (or attempting to), and cannot quite get it to work. Perhaps this is due to my methodology of obtaining the data from the API itself as I'm a complete amateur in this regard. The following is the Javascript code, followed by the HTML for the page. Could someone please take a look and let me know what I've done wrong? Nothing displays on the page when I attempt to load it. In addition, if you're curious as to the specifics of an API call for MesoWest, like the one I've employed here, please see http://mesowest.org/api/docs/
The .js script:
var windrose = {
divname: "windrosediv",
tkn: "eecfc0259e2946a68f41080021724419",
load:function()
{
console.log('loading')
if (!window.jQuery) {
var script = document.createElement("script");
script.src = 'https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.7.1/jquery.min.js';
script.type = 'text/javascript';
document.getElementByTagName("head")[0].appendChild(script);
setTimeout(pollJQuery, 100)
return
}
this.div = $("#"+this.divname);
this.request('WBB');
},
pollJQuery:function()
{
if (!window.jQuery) {
setTimeout(pollJQuery,100);
} else {
load();
}
},
request:function(stn){
console.log("making a request")
$.getJSON(http://api.mesowest.net/v2/stations/nearesttime?callback=?',
{
stid:stn,
within:1440,
units:'english',
token:windrose.tkn
}, this.receive);
},
receive:function (data)
{
console.log(data,windrose);
stn = data.STATION[0]
dat = stn.OBSERVATIONS
spd += Math.round(dat.wind_speed_value_1.value)
dir += dat.wind_direction_value_1.value
windDataJSON = [];
for (i = 0; i < dir.length; i++) {
windDataJSON.push([ dir[i], spd[i]
]);
},
}
$(function () {
var categories = ['0', '45', '90', '135', '180', '225', '270', '315'];
$('#container').highcharts({
series: [{
data: windDataJSON
}],
chart: {
polar: true,
type: 'column'
},
title: {
text: 'Wind Rose'
},
pane: {
size: '85%'
},
legend: {
align: 'right',
verticalAlign: 'top',
y: 100,
layout: 'vertical'
},
xAxis: {
min: 0,
max: 360,
type: "",
tickInterval: 22.5,
tickmarkPlacement: 'on',
labels: {
formatter: function () {
return categories[this.value / 22.5] + '°';
}
}
},
yAxis: {

valueSuffix: '%'
},
plotOptions: {

});
And the HTML:

<script src="https://code.highcharts.com/modules/data.js">`enter code </script>

I appreciate any guidance in this regard, thanks!!!

#W.Howard, I think the problem here is how you are treating and preparing the JSON response from the API. Consider the following JavaScript to retrieve and parse out the data:
/*
* Helper function
* scalarMultiply(array, scalar)
*/
function scalarMultiply(arr, scalar) {
for (var i = 0; i < arr.length; i++) {
arr[i] = arr[i] * scalar;
}
return arr;
}
/*
* getQuery(station, api_token)
*/
function getQuery(station, mins, api_token) {
$.getJSON('http://api.mesowest.net/v2/stations/timeseries?callback=?', {
/* Specify the request parameters here */
stid: station,
recent: mins, /* How many mins you want */
obtimezone: "local",
vars: "wind_speed,wind_direction,wind_gust",
jsonformat: 2, /* for diagnostics */
token: api_token
},
function(data) {
try {
windSpeed = data.STATION[0].OBSERVATIONS.wind_speed_set_1;
windDir = data.STATION[0].OBSERVATIONS.wind_direction_set_1;
windGust = data.STATION[0].OBSERVATIONS.wind_gust_set_1;
} catch (err) {
console.log("Data is invalid. Check your API query");
console.log(this.url);
exit();
}
/* Convert from knots to mph */
windSpeed = scalarMultiply(windSpeed, 1.15078);
//windGust = scalarMultiply(windGust, 1.15078);
/* Create and populate array for plotting */
windData = [];
for (i = 0; i < windSpeed.length; i++) {
windData.push([windDir[i], windSpeed[i]]);
}
/* Debug */
// console.log(windData);
console.log(this.url);
plotWindRose(windData, mins);
})
};
What we had now is an 2D array with wind direction and wind speed that we can pass to the plotting function. Below is the updated plotting function:
/*
* Plot the wind rose
* plotWindRose([direction, speed])
*/
function plotWindRose(windData, mins) {
/*
* Note:
* Because of the nature of the data we will accept the HighCharts Error #15.
* --> Highcharts Error #15 (Highcharts expects data to be sorted).
* This only results in a performance issue.
*/
var categories = ["0", "45", "90", "135", "180", "225", "270", "315"];
$('#wind-rose').highcharts({
series: [{
name: "Wind Speed",
color: '#cc3000',
data: windData
}],
chart: {
type: 'column',
polar: true
},
title: {
text: 'Wind Direction vs. Frequency (Last ' + mins/60. + ' hours)'
},
pane: {
size: '90%',
},
legend: {
align: 'right',
verticalAlign: 'top',
y: 100,
text: "Wind Direction"
},
xAxis: {
min: 0,
max: 360,
type: "",
tickInterval: 45,
tickmarkPlacement: 'on',
labels: {
formatter: function() {
return categories[this.value / 45] + '\u00B0';
}
}
},
yAxis: {
min: 0,
endOnTick: false,
showLastLabel: true,
title: {
text: 'Frequency (%)'
},
labels: {
formatter: function() {
return this.value + '%';
}
},
reversedStacks: false
},
tooltip: {
valueSuffix: '%'
},
plotOptions: {
series: {
stacking: 'normal',
shadow: false,
groupPadding: 20,
pointPlacement: 'on'
}
}
});
}
You can see it all here at https://gist.github.com/adamabernathy/eda63f14d79090ab1ea411a8df1e246e . Best of luck!

How to add multiple series dynamically and update its data dynamically

my task is to add series dynamically and keep updating their data, which is received by ajax calls.
i know series can be added dynamically by declaring highchart funciton global. and using series.addseries() function , and also data can be updated by using settimout request to ajax call and updating points by using series.addpoint() function.
i have done both the work separably. but when i combine both the technique, data is not added to highchart. i have done lot of research on this, and i am not finding reason for not adding the data. infact script hang the browser.
i have checked the series object, which show x-data and y-data are processed. only difference i find is isDirty field and isDirtydata field are set to true. dont know the reason.

i am stuck on this problem for quite a while. and still not able to figure out the solution.
here is the full code link
someone please please help. feeling frustrated ..:-(
As you know the addPoint method is bit dangerous when dealing with quite lots points. It is recommended to disable redraw per point when dealing with many new points - more info http://api.highcharts.com/highcharts#Series.addPoint() , I notice you are doing that already in the loop statement, but why did you commented out? have you tried enabling again. Make sure chart.redraw works by adding a new redraw chart event, and set an alert or console log.
Also you may try using, below as part of ajax, instead of cache:false. I had some problems in past.
headers: { 'Cache-Control': 'no-cache' }
Cheers

Add start-date and end-date as a Xaxis label in highchart

I use date as a string in my chart.
How can I use my start-date and end-date string variables as a label in my xAxis?
start-date = '10.02.2013'
end-date = '10.05.2013'
The code and the chart image is attached. The only thing I need to do is to add startDateLabel and endDateLabel.
var dateEndLabel, dateStartLabel, i, j, lastDate, seriesData, x, y;
i = 0;
seriesData = new Array();
lastDate = data[i].Values.length - 1;
dateStartLabel = data[i].Values[0].Time;
dateEndLabel = data[i].Values[lastDate].Time;
while (i < data.length) {
seriesData[i] = [];
j = 0;
x = [];
y = [];
while (j < data[i].Values.length) {
x = data[i].Values[j].Time;
y = data[i].Values[j].Value;
seriesData[i].push([x, y]);
j++;
}
i++;
}
return $("#criticalWPtrend").highcharts({
chart: {
type: "line"
},
area: {
height: "100%",
width: "100%",
margin: {
top: 20,
right: 30,
bottom: 30,

}
},

},

Yes, this is possible with the renderer method. See this basic example.
chart.renderer.text('10.02.2013', 0, 300)
.attr({
rotation: 0
})
.css({
color: '#4572A7',
fontSize: '16px'
})
.add();
You are going to need to pay attention to the x/y locations (the 2 other params) to place it correctly. You can also modify the text styling.
I'm not sure, but i think you just need to update your xAxis by update method
this.xAxis[0].update({
title: {
text: "start-date = '10.02.2013' end-date = '10.05.2013'",
style: {
fontSize: '10px'
}
}
});
Here's example: http://jsfiddle.net/FEwKX/
But!
If your mean that the start and end dates need to tie to edges, you must specify xAxis settings in config
xAxis: {
categories: categoriesArray
}
where categoriesArray is array like this:
['10.02.2013', '', '', '', '', '', '', '', '', '', '', '10.05.2013']
It should be the same lenght as your lenght of series data.
Check out here: http://jsfiddle.net/FEwKX/1/
Hope that'll help you.
You can also use labelFormatter and http://api.highcharts.com/highcharts#xAxis.labels.formatter and check if labels isFirst or isLast then use your dates, in other cases return proper value (like number).

Highcharts + Highslide: When opening a new highslide popup or clicking anywhere else, close any previously opened popups

So, I discovered that when you have are utilizing highslides in conjuction with highcharts data, its possible to keep clicking new datapoints and have an endless number of modal windows pop up. I wanted to build something that will close an existing highslide popup window if you open a new highslide or if you click anywhere else, either on the screen or on a filter.
I wrote this little function and added it to my beginning statement but it did not work.
<body onclick="javascript:parent.window.hs.close();">
And here is my full example:
The question is, can someone show me an example where I can accomplish my above described behavior?

If allowMultipleInstances is set to false, opened expanders will close when you click to open another. Add this right after the included highslide.config.js file:
<script type="text/javascript">
hs.allowMultipleInstances = false;
