Fabric js : No group member update while moving - javascript

My first question here, after years of finding solutions in other's topics !
First, sorry if my english is not perfect !
I'm using Fabric js in my application and I have to implement a button to group texts or images.
However, I noticed that, when I move the group on the canvas, the group coords are updated but not the group's objects'.
On the canvas, objects are moving well with their group, but in the console, it seems that they always have the same 'top' and 'left' values.
Is it a normal groups behaviour, in which case, I really don't understand, or there is something I am missing ?
It can be noted that I added objects in the group with the addWithUpdate(obj) method.
I really hope someone can help me !

Yes this is normal.
However you can find the position without destroying and rebuilding the group in this way:
given a group that is a fabric.Group and a childObject that is a subclass of fabric.Object you can:
1) create a point with childObject top and left
var point = new fabric.Point(childObject.left, childObject.top);
2) get the group transformMatrix:
var transform = group.calcTransformMatrix();
3) transform the point with this matrix:
var actualCoordinates = fabric.util.transformPoint(point, transform);
and you should be set.

THREE.JS Multiple groups containing the same objects

I'm currently learning THREE.js and trying to make a playable rubik's cube.
I want to be able to rotate a face as a whole instead of moving every single cube one at a time, and I can do so by creating a THREE.Group and adding the cubes in it. The problem is that a single cube is contained in multiple faces, and I can't find a solution. If I create an object, add it to a first group, then add it to a second group, it is removed from the first group.
I'm pretty sure there is a workaround but can't find it as I'm really new to THREE.js and 3D programming (I only followed a basic course https://www.udemy.com/3d-programming-with-javascript-and-the-threejs-3d-library/).

The correct way to add an object to a THREE.Group is through the add function, like you do. But an object added to multiple groups will only ever be a child of the last group to which it was added. This is because add looks to see if the object already has a defined parent, and removes the object from that parent before setting the new parent (r97 code).
Example:

let p1 = new THREE.Group()
let p2 = new THREE.Group()
p1.add(obj) // obj.parent == p1
p2.add(obj) // 1. three.js calls p1.remove(obj) 2. obj.parent == p2
Beyond this reason, and as #Mugen87 mentioned, your cubes need to not only be able to have multiple memberships, but also to be able to enter and leave face groups as their positions change. To me this says you will almost need to transform the cubes individually. You could use a THREE.Group to make it easier to conceptualize, but there would be extra overhead to actually implement it that way.
Maybe a late answer but try to work in another way and group the cubes that need to turn the moment the turn function is activated and then turn the group around, then empty the group.

Drawing plots interactively in a web app

I am looking for a library preferably in JavaScript, that will allow a user to draw a plot (simple one consisting of vertical and horizontal steps) like this one:
The idea is that when the user is done with the plot I can generate data points from the graph and process them.
I don't know where to start, I am looking to start learning to do this within a JS based framework (meteor) but I can't find a library that allows for something like this. The closest library I found is d3.js but I couldn't find any example that allows for this.
Would anyone be able to point out to me a sample example to start from? Would you know of a better suited library to accomplish what I am asking for?
Here is a relatively simple fiddle which accomplishes some of what you asked for, excluding axis (which are relatively easy and has plenty of examples). It uses D3 for all the drawing and mouse event handling. On click it simply executes svg.append("circle").attr("r", 5), and if it's not the first click (i.e. linking points) then it also will create a path element using the previous mouse click coordinates:

Where x and y are the current mouse coordinates. Also has an export button that will output a list in the form of cx,cy,cx,cy,... :: d,d,d,d,.... On import, you could easily split this array into two using indexOf("::") or whatever you choose if you want to change the formatting. Then just exectue for (x in circles) {svg.append("circle").attr("cx", function...).attr("cy", function...);} and do something similar for paths for (y in paths) {svg.append("path").attr("d", function(){return paths[y];});}. It would be even easier if on export you made the cxcy array in the format cx;cy,cx;cy since then you could simply split the array at each comma and then split each index of the resulting array at the semicolon for a nice nested array.
Small update in this version, you can only place points if the current mouse x is greater than the previous x coordinate, and it also has the line d3.event.stopPropagation(); which prevents accidental highlighting of the page.

InDesign extendScript: How do I transform the entire selection?

By using the simple array app.selection[x], you can apply a transformation to any object in the selection, independently. But how do I apply a transformation to the entire selection together?
For example: inside InDesign, I can select two side-by-side objects and flip them horizontally, causing them to switch places and flip.
Inside a script, I can target each object in the selection, but they will not switch places; they will remain in the same place and flip.

I could possibly group the selection, apply a transformation, then ungroup when finished, but this seems like unnecessary bulk that could slow down the code. I can easily do it manually inside InDesign, so it should follow that there's some way to access app.selection as a single object instead of an array. Does such an object exist?
Not really a solution, but it's worth noting that I don't think absoluteFlip is the action being performed, but a state indicating if the item has ben flipped. It's writable so you can set the state, but I think what's happening when using the menu to flip is flipItem: http://jongware.mit.edu/idcs6js/pc_PageItem.html#flipItem,
in which you can set "around" coordinates.
Now getting the origin of the selection box isn't straightforward for some reason (or maybe it is but I don't know how), but you can either use first object coordinates to set the origin so you can flip it around different coordinates depending on order of selection. Or you can sort the array to find left most coordinates (or whichever is needed), like this:

Consider resize. It has a "individual/global" parameter :

paper.js: getting raw pixel data for two layers/groups?

I am trying to get the raw pixel data from two "items" in paper.js. One is already a Raster object so that's not too bad. The problem is that I have another Group object containing a bunch of triangles and I want to capture the Raster data for that layer and then be able to compare it.

It looks like you are always setting child_gene.visible = false, but never set it back to visible = true before you rasterize the layer in computeFitness(). I'm not sure that there's a need for juggling layers in each frame - it should work just as well without it.
Here's a simplified example that uses a square with a gradient as the target raster.

Detecting irregular Shape

The code in (3) works in JSFiddle but breaks at this section in my testing environment (VS2012):

My main question:
I have a region (parcels of land like a map) with about 1500 parcels drawn in html5, not jpg or png images. It is a lot of lines of code to complete that but the rendering is great, so I am keeping it that way. I intend to have a mouseover event tell me which parcel I am standing on when the mouse stops. As you will see in the previous question referred my previous attempts were not impressive. Based on the learning I have been doing, and thanks to Ken J's answer/comments, I would like to go with this new approach of slicing up my canvas into say 15 quads of 100 objects each. However, I would like some guidance before I take another wild dive the wrong way.
Question 2: Should I slice it up at creation or should the slicing happen when the mouse is over a region, ie, trail the mouse? The latter sounds better to me but I think I can do with some advice and, if possible, some start out code. The quadtree concept is completely new to me. Thanks.
Can't help with question 1.
You should definitely build the tree as early as possible, given that the objective is to get the page to respond as quick as possible once the user clicks somewhere.
Keep the tree for as long as the user interacts with the 2d area. Updating a quad tree shouldn't be too hard, so even if the area changes contents, you should be able to reuse the existing tree (just update it).
Given the fact that your draw area is well know i see no advantage in a QuadTree over a spacial hash function. This function will give you an integer out of an (x,y) point.

I'll just give you few tips in addition to what others have said.

From your other messages I conclude that parcels will have irregular shapes. Quadtrees in general work with rectangles, so you'd have to calculate the bounding rectangle around the shape of the parcel and insert that rectangle in the quadtree. Then are when you want to determine whether mouse is over a parcel, you'll query the quadtree which will give you a set of parcels that might be under the mouse, but you'll have to then do a more precise check on your own to see if it indeed is.

From your other questions I saw that you try to detect when the mouse has "stopped". Maybe you should look at it this way: mouse cursor is never moving, it's teleporting around the screen from previous point to next. It's always stopped, never moving. This might seem a bit philosophical, but it'll keep your code simpler. You should definitely be able to achieve what you intended without any setTimeout checks.

You won't (and can't) do slicing, quadtree implementation does that automatically (that's its purpose) when you insert or remove items from it (note that moving the item is actually removing then re-inserting it).
